    Ijtihad, Rethinking Islam

The respected one hundred thousand Ulama & Mashayekh, Imams and Muftis of Bangladesh were asked the following questions:

    1.         Does Islam, as a great religion of peace, support terrorism and extremist activities?

    2.         Did our prophets, especially our beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pubh), preach Islam by applying this type of brutal and ferocious method?

    3.         Is Jihad and terrorism the same thing in Islam?

    4.         Is terrorism a path to Heaven or Hell?

    5.         Can suicidal deaths be termed as a death of a martyr?

    6.         Is genocide legal in Islam?

    7.         Does Islam support killing children, women and old people?

    8.         Isn’t killing people while they are praying a crime?

    9.         Is attacking churches, temples, pagodas etc. legal in Islam?

    10.       Is it or is it not our duty to form social resistance against terrorists and extremists in the eyes of Islam?

This is the widest meaning of siyÉsah in that it is free of the technicality that has developed around this expression in the works of Muslim scholars. SiyÉsah SharÑiyyah thus applies to all government policies, be it in areas where the Shari’ah provides explicit guidance or otherwise....

Similar is the case with many of the mentions in the Qur’an on slavery. An objective reading of the Qur’an itself clarifies which injunctions of it are time-barred and which of them are eternal.”...

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan on Islam, Peace, Interfaith and Christian-Muslim Relations

Muslims have viewed Christians as their rivals instead of looking at them as partners. This was a big mistake that they made. For long, I used to think about why the Quran advises Muslims to help God just as the disciples of Jesus said that they would be God’s helpers. ISLAM IS A RELIGION OF PEACE AND PLURALISM
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

To wrap up this essay and put a seal of peace and pluralism on the Prophet’s mission we quote below the following verses that make it amply clear that the eventual goal was peace, moral uprightness (taqwa) and justice and not war, injustice and ‘Sword’:

“You who believe, be upright before God as witnesses to justice), and let not the hatred of any people prompt you to detract from justice. Deal justly: this is nearest to heedfulness (taqwa); and heed God. Surely God is Informed of what you do” (5:8).

“... And let not the hatred of a people who (once) obstructed you from (entering the) Sacred House, lead you to be hostile. Therefore, help each other to virtue and uprightness (taqwa), and do not collaborate with each other in sin and enmity. Heed God, and (remember,) God is severe in punishment” (5:2).

“It may be that God will bring about love between you and those of them you (now) regard as your enemies. (Remember,) God is Able (to do anything) and God is Most Forgiving and Merciful (60:7). God does not forbid you to be virtuous and just to those who did not fight you over religion, nor drove you from your homelands. Indeed, God loves the just (60:8). God only forbids you to befriend those who fought against you over religion, and expelled you from your homelands, and backed (others) in your expulsion; and whoever befriends them – it is they who are unjust” (60:9).

The Qur’anic verses relating to all the major expeditions as captured in this work from Qur’anic allusions were specific to given contexts, and since the contexts cannot be recreated as much as the Prophet and his companions cannot be brought back to life, they are not of any direct relevance this day – and this must be true for all so-called ‘fighting verses’ of the Qur’an. Their presence in the Qur’an is essential to establish Islam as a religion of peace as this discourse aims at…..

Indian Muslims: Lopsided Priorities; Introspection and an Engagement with This World Is Missing
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

But perhaps the problem is much deeper and it has to be so with the way Islam itself is seen by its followers. For the adherents of this religion, Islamic supremacy is the norm since it believes that Islam is the most perfect and true of all religions. …

Things can be rectified. But for that Muslims have to understand that theirs is not the only religion in the world which is divinely revealed. Moreover, they have to think anew their relationship with the nation state where they are in a minority. Islam has to take a back seat because there is nothing here which can tell them how to interact when they are in a minority situation. The only way forward is to accept the new challenges and altered realities which have come in the wake of modernity. Sadly, such introspection and an engagement with this world is missing.

The Morality or the Immorality of the Institution of Slavery and the Quranic Permission That Allowed Sex with Female Slaves
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

“The Qur'an, like the Old and the New Testaments, recognizes and regulates the practice of the institution of slavery. The Qur'anic legislation subsequently confirmed and elaborated in the Shariat Law, brought two major changes to ancient slavery with far-reaching effects. One was the presumption of freedom; the other, the ban on the enslavement of free persons except in strictly defined circumstances. The Arabs practiced a form of slavery, similar to that which existed in other parts of the ancient world. The Quran urges kindness to the slave (4:36; 9:60; 24:58) and recommends liberation of slaves by purchase or manumission….

The common message brought by all the Apostles: Thou shall not carve graven images for worship had fallen on deaf ears. Open Letter to Maulana Firangimahali: Why Do Moderate Ulema Stay Silent When Terrorists Claim - 'Islam Has Never Been A Religion Of Peace, Not Even For A Day'?
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

I didn’t see you questioning the notorious tele-evangelist Dr. Zakir Naik when he said: “all Muslims should be terrorists” or when he said: “Quran allows Muslims to have sex with female slaves.” Indeed, you all kept quiet when Naik made hateful remarks like the following: “People in the west eat pork and hence behave like pigs. Pigs are the only animals in the world that invite their friends to have sex with their partners. Westerners also do the same.” Naik has made insulting other religions in the guise of comparative study or interfaith dialogue his speciality. But I find almost the entire fraternity of Muslim ulema coming out in his defence when it was discovered that his discourse inevitably inspired several people around the world who took to the path of terrorism.

Worst of all, you and all other ulema kept quiet when Maulana Abdul Aleem Islahi of Hyderabad asked Muslims to pray for the Islamic State. In a press release available online he said: “Condemnation of their (Islamic State’s) action may not be called sagacity and will be considered against the spirit of Islam. … they have tried to fulfil the dream of a large section of Muslims and their determination has infused a new life into the concept of Caliphate. Debating Islam

There are thousands of debates on the internet regarding jihad. If on the one hand Muslim moderates are putting their utmost efforts to prove that Islam is a religion of peace, opponents are presenting some Quranic verses pertaining to Jihad and our own Hadith literature to prove the opposite. Ulema Islamic scholars) are maintaining a studied silence on this subject except giving general statements. … Clearly, Ulema need to go beyond making pious declarations of Islam having nothing to do with the offensive Jihad going on in several parts of the world today. They must take a stand and clarify why Islamic theologians over the centuries including reputed Indian ulema have interpreted war-time Quranic verses as calling for offensive jihad. These verses are being used both by Jihadis and Islamophobes to justify their respective viewpoints. It’s the religious duty of Ulema to come clean and clear the air, both for the sake of Muslim youth who are joining the Islamic State in growing numbers and non-Muslims who have come to fear Islam for obvious reasons

    From the Desk of Editor

With Our 7th Century Mind-Set, Can We Muslims Co-Exist With Other Religious Communities In Any Part Of The World?
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

The Holy Quran had asked Muslims to fight for the existence of all those worship houses, synagogues, churches, monasteries, temples where God is praised in abundance.

“…If God had not checked one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid his (cause); —for verily Allah is full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will). (Qur'an, 22:40)

You can see that here God makes the cause of protecting worship houses of all religious communities, “monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques,” as His own cause. But have you heard any Muslim demanding Saudi Arabia or Pakistan or Bangladesh or any other Muslim country where religious minorities face persecution, to desist and follow the dictates of the Quran for religious freedom and diversity? I would have thought that if Muslims followed Quran, not to speak of the charter of The United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we would be fighting Jihad against Saudi government to allow other religious communities to establish their own worship houses, against Pakistan and Bangladesh to stop persecuting Hindus, Christians and Ahmadis, etc.

Facing The Jihadist Challenge: Muslims Need To Refute Jihadis’ Xenophobic, Supremacist, Millenarian Thesis And Focus On Islamic Pluralism, Says Sultan Shahin At UNHRC In Geneva
Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

Facing the brutalities of Islamist terror, while President Obama will not go beyond calling it violent extremism, the head of Sunni Islam's oldest seat of learning, Jamia al-Azhar admitted in a counter-terrorism conference in Mecca that extremism was caused by “corrupt interpretations of Quran and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad”, and Islamic curriculums needed to change.

This call for reform, coming from Jamia Al-Azhar, is gratifying. But a half-hearted approach to reform will not work. The problems Muslims face are very basic and cannot be solved with mere tinkering with text-books. The global Muslim community will have to introspect. One question repeatedly asked, for instance, is about the contextual verses of the holy Quran that are utilised by Jihadists to brainwash our youth. Jihadists present these contextual verses as an eternal guide for Muslims.

One would imagine that the followers of Islam who believe, and many certainly do, that Islam is a religion of spirituality, peace, coexistence and tolerance, would be up in arms against the Islamic State. But while routine denunciations from some sections do come occasionally, there is no outrage visible in the Muslim society. The world cannot help noticing that while tens of thousands of Muslims come out on streets to demonstrate the moment there is an allegation of so-called blasphemy against any one, hardly any Muslim would protest at the myriad brutalities perpetrated by Islamist terrorists.

Clearly there is something wrong, some disconnect, some deeper and more complex phenomenon at work than what can be understood from a superficial look at the issue. Instead of expressing outrage, we find thousands of Muslim young men and women running from their comfortable homes, private schools and cushy jobs to fight and join in the brutalities of the so-called Islamic State. Some 12,000 Muslim young men and women are said to have joined so far from 80 countries……

If you meet the conditions today you can keep concubines. "The first condition is that if during waging of jihad the women who come with the enemy forces to support them are captured and the emir of the army distributes them, it is his discretion, we can keep them as concubines. Second, if we explore and find some market where slaves and concubines are sold and the sale is established as a social institution there, the women you buy from there will be concubine....

Aligarh Muslim University – Muslim Leaders Need to Quit Minority Syndrome
    Tufail Ahmad, New Age Islam

The Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College, which Sir Syed Ahmed Khan had established in 1875, was dissolved and re-established as the Aligarh Muslim University by an act of Indian parliament in 1920. The AMU therefore is subject to the provisions of the Constitution. While the Constitution gives rights to minorities to establish educational institutions, such institutions cannot retain a minority character if their funding comes from the Indian state. India being a secular state, AMU cannot get taxpayers' money. Under Article 30(2), the state can give aid to minority institutions. But the AMU's case is not a case of the state giving aid, but a case of the Indian state fully funding and running an institution specifically for a minority community....
