The way to Suhrawardiyya khanqah in Multan was barred to non-Muslims and philanthropy of the order did not extend to them. At the same time there is convincing hagiographic evidence about the missionary activity of Jalaluddin Tabrizi, that he converted Bengalis into Islam by force; in particular, with the assistance of the soldiers of Iltutmish he pulled down a Hindu temple in Devatalla (later named Tabrizabad in honour of the saint) and erected a khanqah at its place.

The Wahdat al-Wujud of Ibn al-‘Arabi was introduced to India through the Suhrawardi, ‘Iraqi, however, by this time had not yet penetrated deeply into Chishti or Suhrawardi ideology. Until the mid-fourteenth century mystic ideas had been cast in the mould of the ‘Awarifu’l-Ma‘arif and other earlier sufi classics. The mystic spiritual experience of life with God rested entirely on love, which was opposed to both the philosopher’s reason and the jurist’s wrangling.

Surely, I am convinced, the story of every single human being, no matter how insignificant he or she may be considered by others to be, is worth listening to. Everyone’s life is, at a fundamental level, really quite the same: being a quest for meaning and purpose and a series of experiences that oscillate between pain and pleasure. Learning about how others have sought to supply their life with meaning and have dealt with the pain and pleasure that have come their way can help in making one’s own life more meaningful—or, to put it differently, somewhat less meaningless.

The arrival of ‘modern’ education in the non-white world is generally seen as heralding the advent of ‘the age of reason’, which, in turn, is seen as leading to a rapid undermining of the hold of religion, generally viewed in a negative light, on ‘the natives’. ‘Modern’ education is thus seen as both a ‘civilising’ as well as a secularizing force. But this commonsensical notion has little to commend it, Sengupta indicates, at least in the nineteenth century Indian context.

Bypassing the establishment-friendly analysis of mainstream media and academia, Curtis argues: “The basic fact is that Britain is a major, systematic contributor to much of the world’s suffering and horrors”, carrying out brutal military interventions, large-scale human rights abuses and opposing economic development that benefits the poor. Previously the Director of the World Development Movement and a Research Fellow at Chatham House, Curtis has continued his evidence-based critique of U.K’s foreign policy with 2003’s Web of Deceit and, more recently, Unpeople, in which he maintains Britain “bears significant responsibility” for around 10 million deaths since 1945.

Nizamuddin used to spend a greater part of the day participating in congregational prayers and dhikr, attending to his murıds and receiving visitors. Out of humility he used to go to the congregational mosque in Kilugarhi on foot, although he was an excellent horseman, and it was only in extreme old age that he took to travelling in a palanquin. In accordance with the custom laid down earlier by Baba Farid, he was accessible to the persons requiring his help all twenty-four hours of the day round the clock and in any circumstances.

As long as Bibi Zulaikha was alive, Nizamuddin persistently strove for the career of a Muslim judge. Doubt was cast on the correctness of the chosen path by his neighbour, the above-mentioned Najibuddin Mutawakkil. Having completed yet another stage of education Nizamuddin called on him and requested him to read the Surat al-Fatiha so that he could obtain the post of qad. Najibuddin kept silent, and when the young man three times repeated his request, replied: ‘Do not become a judge. Become something else!’ (Amir Hasan 1992: 111). It is doubtful whether at that moment Nizamuddin could appreciate the sagacity of Shaikh Farid’s brother, but later he used to recall this phrase as one that decided his fate. After a few years’ life in the capital, weakened by hunger and distressing anxieties, Bibi Zulaikha passed away....

Quiet and peaceful Ajodhan, on the banks of the Sutlej, became the place where the saint was to spend almost thirty years of his life. Today, if you drive along the highway from Lahore to Multan, then take a turn half way along, in Sahiwal, and continue in the direction of the Indian border which passes nearby, after 50 kilometres you will find yourself in former Ajodhan, now Pakpattan, near that very river crossing where Baba Farid’s small mud-house stood many centuries back. Looking at the wide, and in these parts silvery, Sutlej, at the shady thickets of acacias in pink and white blossom, and at lush and green gently sloping hillocks on the horizon, you understand why the saint chose Ajodhan with its gentle and pacifying landscape....

There is an undoubted correlation between the extent of remoteness of the dargh or Khanquah of a Muslim saint from imperial capitals and big cities of South Asia, on the one hand, and the nature of his cult and his type of sainthood, on the other. Metropolitan saints, such as Data Sahib and three of the five Great Shaikhs of the Chishtiyya fraternity, possessed universal baraka, and were devoid of group or motivational specificity. These are the saints of the entire social environment - from the sultan to the beggar; these are the saints for all seasons and events of life; their sainthood is of a ‘general type’, and the practice of the veneration of each of them, in spite of inevitable local variations, has a stable commonality of the basic constituent elements....

The set-up and the original design of Caliphate were based on the theory of distribution of functions on the basis of efficiency and distinction, because, in sound societies, the consideration of distinction is incumbent.  Rather the measure of perfection of a society depends on the capability of people, from the angle of testing the inclinations, likes, dislikes, etc. Resources for training should be provided so that the special capabilities of individuals are perfected and their blooming is not possible if they remain untapped....

Owing to the influence of the Shaikh, most of the Mussalmans of this country took an inclination to mysticism, prayers and aloofness from the world and came to have a faith in the Shaikh. This faith was shared by ‘Alauddin and his family. The hearts of men having become virtuous by good deeds, the very name of wine, gambling and other forbidden things never came to any one’s lips .. . Out of regard for one another the Mussalmans refrained from open usury and regretting (ihtikar), while the shop-keepers, from fear, gave up speaking lies, using false weights and deceiving the ignorant ... In short God had created the Shaikh as a peer of Shaikh Junaid and Shaikh Bayazid in these later days and adorned him with that divine love which cannot be understood by human wisdom....

But Imam Reza (a s) was aware of the hidden secrets and he was aware of the intent behind these apparent courtesies. Finally, Mamoon sent somebody to Madinah to bring the Imam to Khurasan. The Imam rejected his demand. On Mamoon’s insistence, Imam was forced to proceed to Khorasan. When he faced Mamoon, the ruler offered caliphate to the Imam, but as he was aware of the secret behind the offer, he rejected the proposal....

The signs of her power of meaningful eloquence are recorded in reliable works of Muslims. A perfect example is her speech, which she made at the peak of her illness on her deathbed before a number of Muhajir and Ansar women. We seldom find people in this world who think of anything at the last moment of their life but their own trouble. But when the Muhajirs and Ansar women came to visit her on her deathbed, they asked her, “KAIFA ASBAHTEE YA BINTA RASOOLILLAH?” (O daughter of the Holy Prophet (saw)! How are you?) In response, first, very carefully, she asks those ladies to raise her weakened physique and make her sit....

As the Mughal aristocracy, imitating the members of the emperor’s family, was literally overloading Ajmer Sharif with new buildings, at the close of his reign Jahangir banned the construction of new buildings on the premises of the Dargah without prior sanction, restricting the pious impulses of the courtiers to the space beyond its outer fence.  That is why the complex came to be surrounded by numerous mosques, covered courts (dlan), summerhouses (barahdarı) and memorial steles. Notable among these structures are two of the rarest mosques in the subcontinent, built by women. ...

Then if all the pains of the twelve Imams (a s) were totalled they would not equal those borne by Imam Sajjad (a s). Troubles started raining on the head of Imam Sajjad (a s) ever since he was only two and thereafter the series continued on the holy family viz. the martyrdom of Ali (a s), troubles faced by Imam Hasan (a s), the disaster in Karbala, the events in Syria, the taunting in Kufa, the despising by the enemy, all these hardships had gripped the life of this true Imam (a s)....

Khwaja Mu‘inuddin did not stay long in Lahore and Delhi: he followed the traditions of his predecessors belonging to the Silsila, who had chosen as their abode not the big cities of the contemporary Muslim world but an out-of-the-way place called Chisht. Probably one of the reasons why Khwaja’s choice fell upon Ajmer was the proximity of Pushkar, an important centre of pilgrimage for Hindus, situated at a distance of only eleven kilometres from this town, giving the ardent missionary the opportunity to convert to Islam the most persistent of infidel ‘heathens’. Situated on the bank of the artificial lake Annasagar and surrounded by the Arawali hills, Ajmer derived its name from the rock Ajay mer (‘Forbidding Hill’), where Rajput rulers of the clan of Chauhans had erected Taragarh (‘Starry Fort’)....
