Judge the Behaviour of Muslims According To the Teachings of Islam, And Not Vice Versa
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Islam is a religion, an ideology, an intellectual phenomenon, while Muslims are a community, a people who claim to be followers of Islam. You need to judge the behaviour of Muslims according to the teachings of Islam, and not vice versa....

Challenges are Part of Life
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Challenges are Part of Life
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

The most hopeful thing about this part of the world is that it is this region that gave rise to Mahatma Gandhi. He proved, through his actions, that even in this world of war and violence it is possible to achieve goals by following the peaceful method. Mahatma Gandhi was a great gift of this part of the world—and a gift to the whole world....

It Is Revenge, And Not Islam, That Is the Motivating Force for the Taliban
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Many people think that the Taliban are a product of Madrasas, but I don’t agree. The Taliban are a product of reaction. It was by chance that they were educated in madrasas—in Deobandi Madrasas in Pakistan—but, in fact, they are not a product of Madrasas as such. The Pakistani state wanted to create a force like this to serve its own ends, and so it provided liberal aid to some of these Madrasas in Pakistan and motivated them to provide armed training to their students....

Q&A with Maulana Wahiduddin Khan at Bangalore Dawah Meet
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Q&A with Maulana Wahiduddin Khan at Bangalore Dawah Meet
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

The Quran clearly says: “We shall certainly test you with fear and hunger, and loss of property, lives and crops.” (2:155) This is part of God’s Creation Plan—that you will suffer loss, that people will say things against you. How can you hope that everything will be smooth, that everything will go your way....

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan on Indian Muslims & Elections
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

Muslims, like other citizens of India, should vote according to national interests, according to the interests of the country. They should take care of their own community interests themselves and should not drag these interests into the elections....

As soon as Islamic State fighters fully seized Deir Ezzor, they enforced many municipal decisions, one of which was the closure of schools. After a long period of time, during which teachers were required by a Divan of Education [bureau of education] decree to attend training courses in Islamic education, the schools reopened....

Q&A: Probing Islamic State’s Sex Atrocities with the United Nations
James Reinl

IS is organised, coordinated and operates on a widespread and systematic basis to commit a staggering array of atrocities. They are institutionalising sexual violence; the brutalisation of women and girls is central to their ideology. They use sexual violence as a "tactic of terrorism" to advance key strategic priorities, such as recruitment, fundraising, to enforce discipline and order – through the punishment of dissenters or family members – and to advance their radical ideology....

Women recruited by the Islamic State—so-called “Jihadi brides”—often think they will be helping with front-line duties. They are, in fact, being used to solve the fighters’ “marriage crisis” and are largely confined to domestic chores such as cooking, cleaning and childrearing, according to a leading academic....

Ban Triple Talaq and Abolish Muslim Personal Law Board, Says Former Minorities Commission Chairman
Prof Tahir Mahmood

The law on this point is absolutely clear in the Quran. There are two verses in the Quran pertaining to Talaq. One verse says, “Divorce is only twice.” The background to this verse was the social condition prevailing in the pre-Islamic period – husbands would divorce their wives temporarily, because every divorce was revocable till the iddat period [This corresponds to roughly three months, the expiry of which leads to couples separating]. They would divorce their wives, revoke it on the last day of iddat, enjoy them for some time and again divorce. Basically, they kept playing hide and seek with wives all their lives....

Muslims are Not Coolies of Secularism, It is Not Our Cross to Carry Alone: Owaisi
Asaduddin Owaisi

Muslims have started leaving the Congress. The mismanagement, corruption, and incarceration of Muslim youth in various terrorist cases have fuelled this disenchantment. I recently met the family of a boy who has spent eight years behind bars in the Ellora arms haul case. His brother is a doctor but he told me that he is now more a lawyer than a doctor. The representation of Muslims in jails is high while their political representation is low....

Muslims are not required to implement the Sharia by force. Sharia law is a matter of option and not a matter of implementation. The word “revision” is not very appropriate in this regard. The better word is Ijtihad....

Inside the Qur’an — An Author’s Journey to the Heart of Islam
Hamida Ghafour

The stereotype is a grey-bearded man in a mosque. But he found women who were riding across Arabia on camelback and horseback to do lecture tours. He found a woman in Samarkand who was issuing not only her own Fatwas but writing Fatwas of her less-talented husband. These are unthinkable freedoms for many women in this day and age....

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan in a Discussion on ‘World Religions: Diversity, Not Dissension’
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

In the course of my study, I discovered that there are two basic tenets in Islam. Firstly, that man should make God his sole concern. And secondly, that one should have well-wishing for the whole of humankind....

Major Issue Muslims in India Facing Today is Secular Education
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Major Issue Muslims in India Facing Today is Secular Education
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Muslims always complain of discrimination. Now, what is this ‘discrimination’? The fact is that Muslims are backward in secular education, because of which they can’t compete with others. And if you can’t compete with others, it is but natural that you can’t get jobs and avail of many other opportunities....

‘China Wants to Stabilize Its Entire Western Periphery’
Raza Rumi

China certainly wants to see a strong, capable Pakistan able to play that role, and that needs an economic underpinning. But with some very specific exceptions – infrastructure in Kashmir, ports with military utility and so on – a better China-Pakistan economic relationship isn’t intrinsically problematic for India, and may even yield some economic and security benefits....

Necessity of Dialogue for Peace
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Necessity of Dialogue for Peace
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Dawah cannot be effectively engaged in without peace, without peaceful interaction with others. Islam is a religion of mission. It has a mission—which is to convey the word of God everywhere. This was the Prophet’s mission. It is the duty of believers in Islam to explain to people the Creation Plan of God, to convey to them God’s message to humanity….

“It is a war within Islam” — Ahmed Rashid
Ahmed Rashid

The Saudis may disguise it and say it’s a threat to territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia. The Iranians will disguise it in other ways. But essentially this is a sectarian war — a war within Islam. It is not a war against the West. This war within Islam must end because the bigger enemy is the ISIS....

Peace and Justice: An Islamic Approach
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

In Islam, then, there are two different fields of justice—personal justice, or justice practiced by the individual in her or his personal life, and social justice. As an individual, you can or should follow justice as your personal ideal in your own life. But as far as the society is concerned, you have to take into account the practical situation. You have to be practical or pragmatic....

Faith and Hope: Conversation with Ziauddin Sardar
Ziauddin Sardar

Dr. Sardar deeply hopes people of all faiths will come to understand each other and where conflicts based on religion, culture, or ethnicity have no place. Dubbed one of Britain’s top 100 public intellectuals, he is one of a handful of individuals who have thought deeply about the nature of the faith and how best to promote better, deeper and more peaceful understanding today....

Iran and the Obama Doctrine
Thomas L. Friedman

Iran and the Obama Doctrine
Thomas L. Friedman

The same is true with respect to Iran, a larger country, a dangerous country, one that has engaged in activities that resulted in the death of U.S. citizens, but the truth of the matter is: Iran’s defense budget is $30 billion. Our defense budget is closer to $600 billion. Iran understands that they cannot fight us.

Islam, Peace, Justice and Dialogue
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

Islam, Peace, Justice and Dialogue
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

Some of the Prophet’s companions wanted to first solve the problems that existed at that time between the Makkans and the Muslims, instead of first accepting peace. The Prophet did not agree with this approach

Islam Would Never Allow Farkhunda to be Lynched
Bisma Tirmizi

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was a very gentle man, he was famed for his honesty, kindness and gentle ways; it was the Prophet’s (pbuh) humanity that made many a people of that era, and of today, convert to Islam. There are countless stories of born again Muslims who have studied the Prophet (pbuh) and his teachings and have changed the course of their own lives for the better….

Tunisia: Islamists in fragile democracy - Interview with Rashid Ghannouchi
Konrad Pedziwiatr

“Tunisia is the only democratic country in the Arab world”, one may read sprayed in French and Arabic on the wall of the construction site by the majestic Municipal Theatre on the main street of Tunis, Bourguiba Avenue. The graffiti captures well the mood of the vast majority of Tunisians who four years after the start of the Arab Spring feel proud of this new political reality....

The Many Names of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi
Ali Hashem

Uncovering the man behind the demagogue was no easy task, so to find an answer I interviewed people who met him, saw him or lived with him in the past. I visited the neighbourhood where he lived in Baghdad and the mosque he led the prayer services as an imam; I saw pictures of his family members, including his sons, daughters, brothers and wife….

...there has been a serious decline in Islamic scholarship and in the understanding of tolerant Islam. All religions are complicated but investment in their scholarship is important. Those who interpret these religions are often in doubt. You will hardly find students entering Islamic schools; they're becoming engineers, doctors, economists, etc. Islam, a multifaceted religion, is being interpreted by those with a mediocre understanding of it……
