Islam and Spiritualism

Since its very inception it has been rife with an egalitarian spirit and concerns for giving back a voice to the voiceless. The Koran does not reference a preferred form of government, nor political ideologies. So, the next time you are asked to stand against communism in the name of Islam, remember that Islam only stands for one “ideology” — the shared dignity of humanity. ....

15th Of Shabaan Rituals and Innovation
Abida Rahmani

There is only one blessed night mentioned in the Qur’an, which is Laila tul Qadr. The Qur’an was sent down in this night and it is one of the nights in the last 10 days of Ramadan. However, those who believe that 15th Sha’ban is blessed interpret the verses in Surah Ad-Dukhan to refer to this night rather than the night of Qadr....

It is celebrated to fulfil the prime objectives of Islamic festivity. It symbolizes unity and brotherhood and inspires all to work towards building a peaceful and prosperous society. Eid is the occasion to bury enmity and hatred, reunite with family and friends and reaffirm the social bonds. It is the festival when Muslims invite people from other communities to the feasts arranged at homes....

Virtues of Sha’ban and the Night of Salvation (Shab-e-Baraa’t)
By Ghulam Ghaus Siddiqi, New Age Islam

Sha’ban is considered one of the most sacred Islamic months. The virtues of this month, especially the night of mid-Sha’ban known as Laylatul Baraa’ah or Shabe Baraa’ah, are mentioned in Hadith and Sunnah. It is reported that the prophet (peace be upon him) said:  "Sha'ban is my month, Rajab is the month of Allah Almighty and Ramadan is the month of my Ummah [Community].  Sha'ban is the expiator, while Ramadan is the purifier.”

Muslims believe the night of 15th Shaban to be a very special night, one in which God opens his doors of forgiveness and mercy. According to Islamic traditions, the destinies of all souls are sealed for the coming year. It is held that on this night the souls that are to be born and those who will depart from this world are identified....

Prophet Muhammad said, “He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell Fire (forever) and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire.” One interpretation of this Hadith is that if we are suffering in our daily lives and decide to take our own lives in attempt to stop the suffering, we will still continue to suffer, even in the afterlife....

Islamic mysticism lets you enter greater realms of spirituality using a balance that suits the entirety of one’s reality....

If a man prays two Rak’at of prayer at night, while others sleep, then even if he prays them according to the Sunnah - without addition or deletion - but he does this so that people may talk about him and say: “This Person is a righteous man. He prays at night when the people are asleep,” then his action becomes null and void...

“A large number of the followers of this religion [Islam] confirm philosophical reasoning, all except a small worthless minority, who argue from religious ordinances. Now, as it is established that the religion makes the consideration of philosophical reasoning and its kinds as necessary as legal reasoning, if none of our predecessors has made an effort to enquire into it, we should begin to do it, and so help them, until the knowledge is complete”.

I was too awed by the breathtaking sight of the magnificent, black cubic structure to remember any prayers. The awareness that this is where the noblest of prophets, from Abraham to Ismail and the last link of the chain, Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon them, worshipped bears down heavy on you. This is where Islam and its greats were born, faced existential struggles and eventually prevailed. This is where Abraham left his wife Hajrah (Hager) and baby Ismail after being ordained by Allah when there was nothing here--literally. ....

Rumi on Death
Dr A Q Khan

This process of rebirth has been explained by Allah Almighty in simple terms; He tells us how clouds are formed, how they are laden with water, how they are carried by wind currents to predetermined places and how the rain falls to turn dry lands into lush green ones. This process is referred to more than once. We are told that after death, we will be raised again in a similar way....

When first starting to read Quran, a book known to be of Divine revelations to God’s Messenger Muhammad of Arabia; a thought occurs to the first- time reader whether the opening chapter named ‘al-Fateha’ is Muhammad’s own composition or is it God glorifying Himself and compelling the Messenger to pledge obedience, as being the Supreme Authority and Master of the Cosmos? If so an irksome perception of imposition looms in the reader’s mind.

“The event, which is being organised by the All India Ulama and Mashaikh Board, will showcase India’s Islamic heritage that rejects violence and supports inclusivity”...... Sufism could be a strong counter to the IS troopers as it never pursues political power or tries to change social structures. Instead, Sufism stands for multiplicity, tolerance, acceptance and love”.

The Prophet (PBUH) apparently said: “The most perfect man in his faith among the believers is the one whose behaviour is the most excellent; and the best of you are those who are the best to their wives.”

Honouring Human Beings
Dr. Zayed Al-Harthi

In Islam, a person is honoured due to his piety, religious affinity and sincerity. Moreover, it is a religious, educational and administrative principle. The application of this principle means appreciating the qualities of the honoured individuals as well as the solid values and beliefs...

Imagine how the people around you would react if you suddenly turned up with a newborn, without being married? Sayyeidatina Maryam was given the difficult task of keeping quiet when she returned to her village. Naturally, everyone started criticising and cursing her. If you were in her position, would have remained speechless through the injustice that was being done? Sayyeidatina Maryam endured patiently and pointed to her baby. Then, Baby Isa stood up for his mother and informed the crowd that he was a Prophet. Subhan Allah!.....

Quoting sacred verses out of context is one of the hallmarks of religious extremism. Why? Because isolating certain verses and separating them from the spirit in which they were said, their historical context, and the entire meaning of the book very often gives a verse or phrase a meaning that’s more suited to a terrorist agenda than to the truth....

Mansur Al-Hallaj Doctrine
Al-Qushayri’s Risala Ila Al-Sufiyya

He never saw such as himself nor did any who saw him ever see such as him in his perfection and brilliance. He gathered together the two sciences of Sharî‘a  and Haqîqa and explained in the best manner the principles of the Path”...

Sufism with its message of universal love has the capacity to change minds and hearts. The history of Sufism in India, and the continuing traditions have something to offer the world. People of all faiths, creed, class and backgrounds visit dargahs. This represents Sufism's true universal message of brotherhood. Traditions at dargahs in India tell the story of the country's composite culture, where many of the customs are indigenous and local in nature.

Divine Connection
Amin Valliani

We have been made the ‘crown of creation’; our role and responsibilities as humans encompass the safety and security of the entire world and its beauty. All living creatures and nature need our compassion. This message needs to be part of our school curriculum, and the media should remind us of it.

The Message of Sufism
Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh

When one becomes a sufi and loves God, that person loves all beings as manifestations of God and serves them. Devotional practice, spiritual striving and ascetic discipline are all for the sake of purifying oneself, not because God needs them. Service to others, though, means service to God. ...

In Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, humanity and the natural world are believed to be the manifestation of God. In that sense, everything that we see, touch, smell or hear is sacred. Even our cities, which we think are cut off from nature, with its malls, roads and skyscrapers, are recognized to still bear the soul of the earth, since they are made from the earth's natural resources.

Surah al-Kauthar has been discussed and explained in both the mainstream Sunni and Shia tafsir and more especially in Sufi mystical exegesis of the Qur’an. The Qur’an exegetes of all the different schools of thought in Islam have produced myriad commentaries regarding the true essence of the term ‘Kauthar’ mentioned in this verse.
