The Greatest Question: Find the Answer in the Creation Plan of God

The Greatest Question: Find the Answer in the Creation Plan of God
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

'Life has become for me a waiting period for death', said an old man. In reality, life is a waiting period for death for everyone although most people do not grasp this fact. The only difference between an old and a young man is that the reality which is accepted by the old man compulsively will be accepted by the young man only if he ponders over it. For an old man, death is a compulsive discovery. For a young man, it is a conscious discovery……

The Quran exhorts believers to “strive for the cause of God as it behoves you to strive for it.” (22:78) This earnest struggle is expressed in Arabic by the word “jihad”, which is derived from the root “Juhd”, which means to strive, to struggle, that is, to exert oneself to the utmost to achieve one’s goal. Jihad in Islam, Sadia explained, is the spiritual struggle within a believer in order to become God-conscious. It continues throughout the life of a believer. According to Islam, every person in this world is on test. Any situation, pleasant or unpleasant, that he is faced with is meant as a test for man. It is required of a person to steadfastly adhere to the principles of justice, honesty, accountability in whatever he is faced with in life. This is the true spirit of jihad….

Every human being comes into this world by decree of Allah, and with him or her, carries a life journey that has been pre-ordained, written and endorsed by Allah Himself, a unique path, a journey throughout a temporary abode, one that is full of obstacles, challenges, punishments and plenty of rewards…..

Appeasing the Relatives: Article of Faith in Islam

Appeasing the Relatives: Article of Faith in Islam
Dr Syed Zafar Mahmood

According to the commentators all the relatives - distant & close - of an individual constitute what is known as Zawil Arhaam. For special consideration of this group God has used (42.23) the term Al-Mawaddata Fil-Qurba. Closer the relationship more intense is the obligation and bigger is the sin for pausing or laying off the relationship. As per divine scheme Zawil Arhaam has been made internally self-sufficient. In a kaleidoscope, turning around the cylinder in a circular motion shows different designs and colour combinations. Similar is the internal mechanism of Zawil Arhaam: in the group of relatives some are very rich, some very poor, some on the threshold, some very learned, some illiterate, but the group as a whole is internally self-reliant. God keeps a tab on every group member as to his/her behavior with others…..

Thank Allah for Every Blessing

Being grateful is also a sign of one’s closeness to and love of Allah. People who give thanks have the insight and capability to perceive the beauties and blessings that Allah creates. Allah’s Messenger, peace be upon him, also referred to this when he said, “When Allah gives you property, the bliss of Allah’s blessing and offering must be reflected on you.”….

The greater goal of I’tekaaf is to attain hearts’ rectitude through directing its love solely towards Allah Almighty, his holy prophets and their obedience. It aims to free people from their preoccupation with anxieties and evil desires circulating around the world. During I’tekaaf, one should think of how to attain pleasure of Allah Almighty and what will cause nearness to Him. I’tekaaf is intended for devoting to Ibadah (prayers) that includes performing Nawafil prayers, Invocations, reciting the holy Qur’an, understanding Ahadith, seeking self-introspection, and self-purification from evil acts. Mostly it is done to find out the ‘Night of Quadr’....

Since the recitation of the Surah Fatiha is one of the basic tenets of the Salah, it appears as if it was revealed along with the Salah, in the same time and place. But the reality is that Surah Fatiha was revealed a year after the beginning of the divine revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Some scholars have also suggested that it was revealed in Madinah, while some others declared it a “Makkan Surah”. A hadith report says that the Angel Gabriel (pbuh) came to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and told him that Surah Fatiha was the basic element of the Islamic prayer.....

Scholars of Islam have done extensive research on the reasons why the Prophet (pbuh) had to turn to the Ka’bah after he prayed towards the Bait ul Muqaddas. Imam Tabri offers an account in conclusion: “The Prophet turned towards the Bait ul Muqaddas for sixteen months, and then it reached his ears that the Jews were saying, "By God, Muhammad and his companions did not know where their (Quiblah was until we directed them." This displeased the Prophet and he raised his face toward Heaven, and God changed the (Quiblah”. (23) The Jews also said about the Prophet (pbuh) that “he prays his Salah towards our prayer direction and still he opposes our religion” (24). This displeased the Prophet and God changed the (Quiblah.  It has also been said that the since Arabs had deep love and great veneration for the Ka’bah, the change of (Quiblah was ordained in order to attract their hearts to the prayer so that they could be punctual of Salah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had innate passion for calling the various pagan tribes of Arabia to the path of Allah and probably this was one the reasons behind the change of the (Quiblah” (25)…..

The event which happened on the 10th of Ramadan (11 January 630 AD) is a special reminder for the radical self-styled Islamists and jihadists who are inciting Muslims to engage in a continued Malhamah (revenge on enemies) to change their extremist attitudes and adopt the noble policy of Marhamah (forgiveness) enjoined by the Prophet of Islam (pbuh) ... See what a world of difference between the Prophet’s sublime behaviour and the present-day self-styled Islamists’ virulent treatment of Muslims from other sects.....

Having understood the purpose of death and life, we should always struggle for getting good marks in the test of life. Thus, we should be best believers, best in conduct, observe patience, tolerance, remain in our natural virtue (Ahsan e Taqweem), treating others with love, justice, compassion, sympathy and not doing anything against commands of Allah Almighty, thinking that we belong to Allah and will return to none but Him.....

If the worshipper is unclean or impure (i.e. he is without ablution), his prayer will not be acceptable in Islam, because cleanliness and ablution are the keys to an Islamic prayer. Cleanliness in Islam implies the purification of body, dress and place of worship. The Islamic practice of Wuzu (partial ablution) should be performed in complete conformity with the Qur’anic edicts and hadith rulings which say that: “Allah, the Almighty does not accept the prayer of a worshipper without ablution” (1).

Muslims could view Ramadan as an intense training course, a time when they are afforded opportunities to rectify their lives Ramadan is referred to by many names: it is the month of fasting, the month of patience and the month of victories, to name but a few. Undoubtedly, though, the one that is associated most with Ramadan is, the month of the Quran; the first verses of the noble Quran were revealed to Prophet Muhammad during the blessed month……

In fact, Ramadan fasting is a stage where the human being is the closest to God. The fasting period, Ramadan is a time when one really submits to spiritual and social changes. Ramadan fasting is a confidential act which occurs between the human being and his Creator. This act must be impregnated with full sincerity and the deepest loyalty. Now in case fasting loses its honesty, it becomes hypocrisy……

Sahl Tustari, another early mystic, fasted perpetually and earned the title of “Shaykh ul Arifin”, Master of the Knowers. He said, “Hunger is God’s secret on the earth.” Abu Madyan, the African mystic, writes, “One who is hungry becomes humble, one who is humble begs and the one who begs attains God. So hold fast to hunger, my brother, and practice it constantly for by means of it you will attain what you desire and will arrive at that for which you hope.”…

The Islamic month-long observance Ramadan, which falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, will be taking place from June 28 to July 28 this year. During the observance, Muslims around the world will abstain from drinking, smoking, eating, and engaging in sexual intercourse. Ramadan, which aims to purify the soul and bring the individual fasting closer to God, was first observed in 610 CE…….

"Fasting in Ramadan serves as a shield against evil temptations as the gates of Jahannum (Hell) will be shuttered and the gates of Jannah (Paradise) will be wide open,” he said, adding that it is an opportunity to immerse oneself in worship during the month, which is also an occasion for joy and communal celebrations……

These days, the call to prayer is performed from the Minarets attached to the mosques that often have loudspeakers mounted on the top of their minarets. However, the earliest mosques of Islam in the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did not have minarets. The Muslim community of Medina performed the Azaan or the call to prayer from the roof of the house of the Prophet (pbuh) or al-Masjid al-Nabawi, which doubled as a place for prayer. Hadith reports relay that the first officially appointed Islamic Muezzin (one who gives the call to prayer) Hazrat Bilal (r.a) would climb the roof of a house closest to the Prophet’s mosque and perform the call to prayer (1).......

It would be a great injustice to define God’s unlimited, ultimate, eternal and everlasting knowledge, which is beyond the time and space, by the knowledge of prophets which is, although, extraordinary and more than what an ordinary man could possess, but it is absolutely limited. One should remember that God’s knowledge is like a sea with no bound and limit, and all the knowledge and sciences, known to the world and entire humanity, are less than a drop of water, as compared to the God’s knowledge.

One thing that Muslim community should learn is that, the only pivot and soul of faith, believing in oneness of God Almighty and having deep love and enormous affection for Prophet (pbuh), and the rest of the things are object of devotion, and not the matter of Kufr and Imaan……

Prophets and Ilm ul Ghaib (Knowledge of the Unseen)

One of the most loving attributes of God in Islam is that He gives us chances, a clean slate, a fresh start to purge our life of the grave sins we are prone to. As our life advances ahead, it gradually becomes replete with spiritual vices and moral deficiencies. But the all-loving God, al-Wadud (one of the 99 special attributes of Allah in the Qur'an) gives us relaxations and many opportunities throughout the life to reclaim the virtues of righteousness, purity, humility, piety and all the glorious personality traits that our first father Hazrat Adam was born with. Every year just ahead of Ramadan, we enter into the Islamic month of Sha’ban full of divine bounties, spiritual blessings and moral virtues. But instead of giving it a pass, as we Muslims casually do, we should recall the prime objective of Sha’ban being prelude to Ramadan, that is, to reclaim our true selves; our true nature upon which we were created....

Shab-e-Barat (Night of Salvation) falls on the 15th of the Islamic month of Sha’aban. In a number of Hadiths, the importance of this night has been stressed. For Muslims, this night brings hope for salvation, a better life in the world and in the Hereafter. They believe that supplications and prayers offered in this night do not go unanswered. God’s blessings are showered on the devotees the whole night…..

The Sufis, the Sadhaks and spiritually inclined persons have tried to remove Satan from their hearts to come closer to God. This practice and this perception led them to the feeling that God is present in their heart and around them and that God is the essence of all the existence in the universe. They felt this unity of existence both metaphysically and visually. This gave birth to the philosophy of Unity of Existence and Unity of Perception (Wahdat ul Wujud and Wahdat us Shuhud)…..

God has created this universe and created human beings on earth. Man does not live on earth isolated from God. God is in constant touch of human beings and all the creatures on earth. Man is associated with God very closely and He cares for him, guides him and communicates to him whenever required and wherever. Sometimes this communication is loud and sometimes, it is very subtle. God communicates with Man on three levels. In the Quran God says this:

The Spiritual Hierarchy
Hazrat Inayat Khan
The Spiritual Hierarchy
Hazrat Inayat Khan

Those who view life mystically consider that they are not only at one with the teachers of this or that tradition of the past, but that in every soul there is a spark of that teacher. No soul is without the light of that spiritual teacher. Therefore, they have regard and respect not only for the spiritual hierarchy, but also for the spark of that light which has made every soul a part of the spiritual hierarchy. So they regard with respect and reverence every human being in the world……

“Love all and hate none. Mere talk of peace will avail you naught. Mere talk of Allah and religion will not take you far. Bring out all of the latent powers of your being, and reveal the full magnificence of your immortal self. Be surcharged with peace and joy, and scatter them wherever you are and wherever you go. Be a blazing fire of truth, and be a soothing balm of peace.  With your spiritual light, dispel the darkness of ignorance; and spread goodwill, peace, and harmony among the people. Never seek any help, charity, or favours from anybody except Allah. Never go to the courts of kings, but never refuse to bless and help the needy and the poor, the widow, and the orphan, if they come to your door. To serve the people is your mission. Carry it out dutifully and courageously, so that I, as your Pir-o-Murshid, may not be ashamed of any shortcomings on your part before Allah almighty and our holy predecessors in the Sufi order....

Ethics in Islam
Nikhat Sattar

The principles of ethics are often discussed with respect to gains and benefits to society at large. What is good or bad is supposedly determined by the rule of the majority, with little attention given to the principles of morality. Islamic ethics differ from the Western concept as these are derived from God, directly from the Quran, and from the practices of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). It is therefore a set of beliefs and actions that is divine and transcends the limitations of time, place and tradition.....
