The Existence of God

The Existence of God
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

His infinite power reaches to the furthermost corners of the universe, and no object of His will is too great or too small to escape its force. And quite independent of all objects of creation, God has His ego.....

Time to Reflect On Spirituality
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

When people discover the truth and learn of the plan of the Creator, their lives enter a new phase, that of building their personalities according to spiritual principles. It is such a personality that will be held deserving of being settled in the noble society of heaven in the Hereafter....

So our sleep reminds us of our death and all through the waking hours we keep on refreshing that remembrance. In regular prayers and while reading the Quran it is impossible to continue for any length of time without being reminded that this life is temporary and our permanent abode is in the Hereafter. A beautiful Dua (supplication) further highlights a Muslim’s concerns: “O Allah, do not make this world our greatest worry, the sum total of our knowledge, and the object of our desires.”…

The Message of Love (Concluding Part)

The Prophet and the Imāms, peace be upon them, did not only speak about loving our women: they spoke of loving all women. They did not say that we should only love our children: they said that we should love all children. As the Messenger of Allāh, ṣallalahu ‘alayhi wa alihi wa sallam, taught: “Love children and be compassionate with them, and when you promise them something, always fulfil it, because they certainly consider you their benefactors”...

Muslim theologians, however, avoid using terms such as father or mother when describing the divinity since they denote duality as opposed to divine unity. Although God is neither male nor female, Muslim theologians describe the Divinity in terms of attributes of power and beauty, namely, between feminine and masculine qualities. God, for example, is both Merciful and Wrathful, both Gentle and Severe, and both Beautiful and Majestic. Although a mother is all mercy, explains Rumi, there is also mercy in the father’s severity for Allah’s mercy prevails over his wrath. In Islam, justice is tempered by love, mercy, and forgiveness....

Why, 600 Years after Death, Saint Of Kashmiri Syncretism Lives On
Sameer Arshad Khatlani

The faithful have been chanting the Aurad-ul-Fatiha in Kashmir’s mosques since the 14th century saint Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, who popularised Islam among the masses, introduced the practice. The converts, Tully wrote in India In Slow Motion, missed “their temple worship with its occasional singing and dancing”, so Hamdani collected an anthology of Quranic verses and the Prophet’s sayings for them to chant in mosques. This was a departure from the Muslim practice of silent worship.....

Essence of Islamic Teachings Missing

The recent events in which religious extremist groups that follow a twisted version of the religion have appeared powerful before the state have pushed us back to square one. More focus and energy will be needed to undo what such groups have done by misleading the less educated people. The people need to be educated that the narrative being presented by the religious extremist groups and incitement to violence against religious minorities contradict the essence of Islam, which is based on the principles of tolerance and harmony....

“When I have fashioned him (in due proportion) and breathed into him of My spirit, fall ye down in obeisance unto him” (15:29). This is one of the Mutashabihat verses of the Quran about the creation of Hazrat Adam, the reality of which is known only to God, but it implies the breathing of a spirit from Him, making humans unique to all other creations....

Message of Rabi-ul-Awwal
Zeeshan Rasool Khan

Today almost every nation claims to be standard-bearer of female rights but history is testimony the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is first in defending rights of women. In pre- Islamic era the women was not more than a serf and experienced every sort of discrimination. Taking them as mark of contempt people even practiced female infanticide by burying them alive. After advent of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), prohibition was enforced on this despicable practice. the Holy Prophet (PBUH) denounced the practice of female infanticide, safeguarding the repute and rights of women....

Death is a return to our Creator. A return signifies going back to where we came from: in short, our real home. “To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return” (2:156). Our stay in this world is a mere journey, to be lived briefly, but with constant reminders of our origin. Returning to God is returning home, and we will find that it was our stay in this world that was strange. Our real and natural abode is the one promised to us when we have exited to the afterlife....

A Tale from Rumi’s Masnavi

A Tale from Rumi’s Masnavi
Dr A Q Khan

His poetic collection, Masnavi, is regarded as a divine work. This is because when he recited his verses in Persian, he would go into a trance and his disciples would write them down. Rumi’s own devotion to the Almighty and His apostle was expressed in this verse: “When I am praying, by God I don’t know what and which part of it I am following and I don’t know who the Imam is”….

Death is a reality that no one can deny, whether you believe in God or not. We witness people departing this world around us all the time, in the news, on social media, even in our communities and families. Death knows no age and no race. Healthy or unhealthy, no human being can ever know when they shall taste death but as the Almighty reminds us, “Every soul shall taste of death; and We try you with evil and good for a testing, and unto Us you shall be returned.”…

The Immeasurable Value of Human Existence from the Perspective of Islamic Sufism
Prof. Henry Francis B. Espiritu, New Age Islam

A great Sufi saint of Sunni Islam, Hazrat Imam Al-Sana’i once said: “God loves and values you more than you can ever love and value yourself” I find this short sentence pregnant with profound truths on the immeasurable value of our own human existence—of the existence of each human person. We need to be reminded time and again that it is God, the Necessary Existence Himself that willed us to existence. God finds immense worth in our existence, even though our earthly existence is ephemeral and impermanent....

The Quest for Peace: God Is Peace and God Wants People To Live In Peace
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Terrorism is today a global menace, and much of this terrorism is by Muslims. Terrorism must be condemned and opposed by all peace-loving people. Today, the world is crying for peace. And one question vast numbers of people are asking is: how can we establish peace in the world? If we want peace, there is no way other than to change our way of thinking. We have to become positive thinkers. Peace and positive thinking are closely inter-related. They are intertwined. Positive thinking is the inner content of peace, and peace is the external expression of positive thinking....

God Has a Plan of Creation
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

A perfect Paradise cannot be inhabited by less-than-perfect beings. So, God created perfection-seeking beings—us. He intended us to spend a period of trial on this present and imperfect world and after this, according to our deeds, we will earn the right to inhabit the perfect and eternal world....

Huquq-ul Ibad: Caring for Others

Huquq-ul Ibad: Caring for Others
Nikhat Sattar

Caring for others is also known as Ihsan: adopting an attitude of ensuring better for others and less for oneself. Islam asks its followers to be sensitive to the feelings of others, especially if they are strangers, or if there is a chance of hostility. This becomes important when Muslims live and work in foreign lands, where their way of life and worship might be other than the norm. Their attitude towards their adopted countries should be that of guests caring for the possessions and feelings of hosts....

The sitting position even includes the re-creation of the conversation that took place between the Prophet (PBUH) and Allah during the Heavenly Ascent. The Prophet (PBUH): “All greetings, blessings, and good acts are for Allah.” Allah: “Peace is upon you oh Prophet, and the Mercy, and the Blessings of Allah.” “Peace be with us and unto the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah.” “And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.”....

The Beauty and Wisdom of the Sufi Teaching on 'Tawakkul' or Divine Surrender
Prof. Henry Francis B. Espiritu, New Age Islam

The reason why I sometimes wanted to declare my “independence” from God is my feeling that there are many things that are going-on in my life that I cannot understand, and I sometimes feel that if I am the one truly in-charge of my life, then all will be well. However, when I looked back at my past and saw for myself the wrong directions I had taken and the mistaken decisions I had made, and the many heartbreaks and complications that came due to my stupid decisions, I cringed at the idea of my seeking “independence” from God; and right there and then, I sincerely repent of my arrogance and confess with utter humility that God is still the God of Divine Wisdom Who holds my very life in the Palm of His Hands….

We are required to read/contemplate books of self (Anfus) and cosmos (Aafaq) to fulfil our potential as humans.  We are called to learn from prophets, sages, saints and poets who inherit them and all of them preserve and teach us the Tradition that is our true Home and salvation. This tradition has not necessarily to do with past or custom but is timeless and like language one is, indelibly, already marked by it. It is defined as that which connects man to Heaven/Perfection/Reality/Being.....

Good communication requires a conversation between two parties, that is you talk to Him and He talks to you. How can we do that with Allah (Allah Izz o Jal)? Among many reasons, one of the reasons why Al-Hakim (the All-wise) taught us to pray was this. It not only means offering our five daily prayers, it also means TALKING to Allah (the All-Mighty) through Dua....

Sufism: A Search for Freedom and Self-Authenticity
Prof. Henry Francis B. Espiritu, New Age Islam

As I step-up and deepen my readings on Islamic spirituality, I sensed that Sufism as a philosophy and as a movement has strong affinity with those movements that seek human authenticity and freedom: say for example the hippie movements, the counter-culture, the Gypsy lifestyle, and the anti-establishment movements in the 1960s and the 1970s. I really feel that there is a strong similarity between the aspirations of the Sufis of Islam and the hippies and the anti-establishment movements concerning the human person’s freedom and authenticity to choose for himself how to live one’s life in the midst of the nauseating hegemony of the society that forces us into unthinking conformity to conventional conditioning and tyranny of the majority opinion on how to live one’s life.

Similarly the Qur’an approvingly mentions many other practices, like the call to prayer (azan) and the Friday prayer, but never gives commands about them. Again, why? Is there any other explanation possible except for the obvious one that there is a parallel source of instruction in the person of the Prophet (PBUH)? Actually in the form of Hadees, Muslims have an unprecedented branch of knowledge....

In Madina, there was a group that was declared hypocrites or Munafiqun by the Quran. This group opposed and criticised the Holy Prophet in the wars of Uhad and Tabuk and were disobedient to him on several occasions. Although the Quran strongly condemned their activities, they were allowed to live in peace as part of the Muslim community. Abd-Allah ibn Ubayy was the leader of the hypocrites. On his death, the Prophet led his funeral prayer at the request of his son.....

Let’s Be Humble, We Come From Him

Let’s Be Humble, We Come From Him

The 13th century Sufi master Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani of Baghdad said, “All the doors of God are crowded except one, the door of humility and humbleness.” Moses once asked Allah, “Oh my Lord! Who is the most deserving of your wrath and displeasure?” He said, “It is one whose heart is filled with arrogance, tongue abusive, eyes lustful, hands miserly and whose character is doubtful.”...

The Book says Hajj is meant for the benefit of mankind. The planet earth as a whole was and is populated by mankind. To suggest that Makkah, the ‘city of peace’, ironically having been attacked often should be a center on the surface of the globe is to say the least insulting human intelligence and limiting the universality of the Creator.  2-177 dispels this fixation…
