The Middle Path

The Middle Path

We must remember that Prophet Mohammad, called us to moderation often repeated warnings of extremism, He said, “beware of extremism, for it was extremism that destroyed the communities before you”. He also said, “Moderation. Moderation! Moderation. For only with moderation will you succeed”. The “middle way” of the Prophet must be restored, one that defines Islam as an authentic summon to cultural and spiritual renewal...

The prophet Muhammad also institutionalized food giving in all three of the major Muslim holidays. In Ramadan, for example, Muslims are encouraged to feed each other every night for Iftar (the breaking of the fast). On Eid-ul-Fitr, Muslims donate grains and other staple foods, a practice known as Zakat-ul-Fitr. And on Eid-ul-Adha, Muslim families are required to slaughter an animal, keeping a third for the family, gifting a third to friends, and offering the last third as a donation….

Corrie froze with horror. Just a few minutes ago, she had preached on forgiveness, and now she was unable to forgive! She prayed for the strength and the will to forgive. No sooner had she prayed than she felt an overwhelming power rush through her system. She grasped the extended hand of the former Nazi guard. “Brother,” she cried, “I forgive you, with all my heart…!Learn to forgive, it’s like a cloud lifting from you, as you live joyously..!.

When we turn away from its pages and do not give it its full justice, we are harming ourselves by lessening our ability to take in its wonders and to look briefly at one of the final messages of the Prophet. On the day of Ghadeer, he spoke of two weighty things, the Quran and the AhlulBayt, that “if you hold on to these valuable things, the Quran and the AhlulBayt, you will never be lost after my death.”...

The key figures and texts of just about every religion discuss crying as a positive attribute, from Buddha to Guru Nanak to the Abrahamic prophets. If these magnanimous figures in human history cried, there is no doubt it can only be a good thing.....

The Sufi believed in showing respect and kindness to all human beings and interacting with them with the best of intentions. He says, “Treat everyone equally whether they are kings or paupers, old or young. Know that humankind is one body and individuals are its members. A body is not a whole without its parts….

He is alleged to have blasphemed by saying that the opposition to his election next year is being orchestrated by Muslim ‘hard-liners’ by using a verse from Quran. According to this verse given below, Muslims are not supposed to elect a non-Muslim leader even if he is a Christian – people of the Book....

Spiritual Significance of Divine Oaths in the Holy Quran
Kazi Wadud Nawaz, New Age Islam

Qur’anic Oaths irrespective of the objects swearing upon, is an earnest and blissful divine endeavour to spell out any shred of doubt and confusion in human mind   regarding  unseen realities like Day of Judgment, Angels, Heaven and Hell, Reward for the virtuous and punishment for evil doers. The objects of Divine oath collectively constitute the Regulating instruments of Divine governance....

Reflections on Prayer

Reflections on Prayer

Regular prayer helps us develop duty-consciousness as well as punctuality. It also helps us to be time-consciousness and to use our time in a proper manner. The Muslim form of prayer also has great physical benefits. It helps us become more particular about the cleanliness of our clothes, while the various postures in this form of prayer also provide our body with physical exercise. Performing ablutions before prayers removes accumulated physical dirt and provides freshness….

In another narration by Ibn Abbas, the Holy Prophet fasted on the day of Ashura and ordered the people to fast on it. The people said: “O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians honour.” The Prophet said: “When the following year comes, Allah willing, we shall fast on the ninth.” The death of the Prophet came before the following year.....

We commonly think of illness as dreadful, something to complain about, but there’s a very different way of understanding it, as reflected in a saying attributed to Prophet Muhammad that Shabnam shared with me: Nothing befalls a believer, a [prick of a] thorn or more than that, but God will raise him one degree in status thereby, or erase a bad deed....

Seven Things You Can Do RIGHT NOW to Live a Happier Life

Every night, think of at least 3 things that you are feeling grateful to Allah for. It could be things specific to that day or general things, but it should be GENUINE. One thing that I am always grateful for is the health of my children. It could be anything that YOU really FEEL. Gratitude is an incredible way to feel connected with Allah because you KNOW that He gave you those things. Remember, all help is from Allah. Every good thing you have is from Allah....

Working for peace among people is a great deed that is better than charity, fasting and prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:  “Do you know what is better than charity and fasting and prayer? It is keeping peace and good relations between people, as quarrels and bad feelings destroy mankind.”...

Blessed Are the Peace Makers
Rashid Samnakay, New Age Islam

Notwithstanding the political agendas and regional strategies of the warring factions in the Middle East, the majority Muslim region, claiming to follow “Islam”, are not only committing genocide in its name and the Book Quran whence Islam takes its Arabic name; but filing up the refugee camps all over the world with human misery. These wars of brethren on brethren - Muslims on Muslims; alleged to be for no other reason than that the warring parties are, they insist, factions of one and the same religion Islam. Although, it vehemently excises from its fold all forms of schisms and sectarian divisions among its followers; as given in 6-159 of the Book....

The participants — mostly American-born converts to Islam — squeezed their eyes shut; some gently swayed, letting themselves be carried away by the rhythmic mantras. The pace of the chants quickened, one man stamped his feet, another wept silently, and after 30 minutes the beloveds were captivated and perspiring. Sufis call this practice Zikr and see it as a way of connecting with God and elevating themselves through communal meditation. Worshipers frequently lose themselves in a spinning frenzy, as with the well-known whirling dervishes....

In the Hadith, “Al-Birr is good behaviour.” (Muslim) In the Musnad, from Jabir, Marfu narration states, “They said: ‘What makes Haj Mabrur, O Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him)?’ He said, ‘providing food to people and spreading (the greeting of) Salam’.” (Fath Al-Bari) The following will help one ensure that his or her Haj will be accepted, Insha’Allah....

Haj: The Ultimate Journey (Part One)
Sheikh Mokhtar Maghraqui

Haj in the Arabic language means aim, destination or purpose (Qasd). The reason is clear: Haj is the ultimate journey of loving submission (Ubudiyyah) and conscious surrender (Riq) to Allah. Its ultimate destination is your encounter with the House of Allah (Bayt Al-Allah) — the Kaaba — with both your physical body and, more importantly, your heart (Qalb)...

With regard to this Hadith, the noted Hadith scholar Ibn Hajar says that the phrase “God willing” here proves that this saying of the Prophet is not to be taken in the sense of Khaibar, or a definite statement of fact, about sickness, but is rather a Dua or supplication to God. ..

Sufis say the jurisprudence of speech is that one should abstain from saying something about a person that they would not like to hear about them; even if the concerned person is absent from the conversation. Backbiting is a serious sin and requires repentance from God....

When one reads this masterpiece, it would not even seem too far to suggest that this letter could solve the world’s problems in its turmoil today; it should resonate with any human with a conscience that is alive. It is no wonder then that Kofi Annan, secretary-general of the United Nations at the time, referenced it in a statement on the fiftieth anniversary of the declaration of Human Rights. The beauty of this letter is in the fact that it is universal, timeless and can be applied in any walk of life, whether you are in a position of leadership or not....

Reform Yourself Instead of Confronting Others
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

When everything that happens is from God, then, undoubtedly, whatever Muslims are facing is also from God. This is why the only way to respond to this situation is for Muslims to turn to God. ..

Mystic Mantra: Learn To Forgive

Mystic Mantra: Learn To Forgive
Sadia Dehlvi

Both the words, Rahman and Rahim, come from the Arabic root verb Rahm that means womb. Prophet Muhammad often said that God’s mercy was akin to the love and compassion that a mother has for her child. Allah endowed women with his primary attribute of mercy.

The holy month of Ramazan seems a good time to contemplate the creation of human beings and their rather haughty behaviour. We are all witness to how the majority of our countrymen – including most of the leaders – totally ignore the spirit of the divine edicts. It is almost like the Quran and Hadees seem no more than the Arabian Nights or Tilism Hoshruba to them...
