Islam and the Media

Summer of Muslim Journalists’ Discontent
Rabia Chaudry

Not that in any circumstance is Muslims obligated to specifically and individually condemn terrorism or atrocities committed by Muslims, let’s be clear about that.  I reject completely the call by other Patheos writers that I or anyone should write about ISIS (frankly I can write about whatever I feel like, and so can everyone else), but it’s important to note that the silence of the Muslim writers here was not only on the issue of ISIS. It was a general silence…..

The Arab World Wants Friends, Not Masters
Khaled Almaeena

Social media highlighted the Palestinian plight and human suffering, the holocaust, the annihilation of a people whose only request is to live in freedom, peace and dignity. But the mainstream media in the United States adopted a totally callous approach. Almost all mainstream networks, such as CNN, Fox and their affiliates went ballistic accusing Hamas of “attacking Israel,” holding the movement responsible for the current situation and threatening the security and stability of Israel! Some anchormen even fabricated lies…..

Touching Foot in Pakistan
Khaled Ahmed

An Indian-Gujarati friend of mine, with whom I share my enthusiasm for the Gujarati community of Karachi, has written something about me that needs only marginal correction. Writing in the Hindustan Times of May 12, 2014, Aakar Patel observed: “In a profile of his by a Western writer, I was alarmed to see that the columnist Khaled Ahmed, one of my heroes, actually paid one of the groups to keep them off his back. Such, then, is the lot of the writer of opinion in Pakistan.”.....

Pakistan Media: In the Shadow of Death
Tushar Ranjan Mohanty

Pakistan exists under a rule of terror imposed by a military-mullah combine, and it is, consequently, not surprising that the medium which attempts to unravel this truth and to criticize the prevailing order, has been under constant attack.....

Publicising Sufism and Pakistani Media

Publicising Sufism and Pakistani Media

Dear readers! Tears have welled into my eyes when I am writing these lines. We are obeying the orders of our spiritual guide, Iblees like disciplined disciples.  Today is 19th April, 2014. Sama TV is telecasting the programme Qutb Online. The camera and mike takes the viewers to the Mazar of Bahauddin Zakaria and Ruknuddin Shah Alam in Multan. The statements of men and women are being recorded. “From where have you come and why?” Almost every one said, “We have come to supplicate. We have come to seek intervention and God’s benevolence. He is Waliuallah (Friend of God).” The mike asked, “You have come from such a great distance while Hadhrat Data Ganj Bakhsh is closer to you.” One female pilgrim said, “Whatever we have is his (Data Ganj Bakhsh) gift only. So we have come to seek here too.....

ISIS 'Khilafat' Divides Indian and Pakistani Urdu Media: While Sections of Indian Urdu Press Romanticise, All Pakistanis, Including Ulema, Ignore or Portray them as un-Islamic Terrorists

Some sections of Indian Urdu media have presented the victories of the ISIS, particularly its announcement of the establishment of the Islamic Caliphate with great fervour and excitement and have tried to prove that it is a true Islamic organisation. But the Pakistani media did not give much importance and space to ISIS adventures and the so-called Caliphate of Abu Bakr Baghdadi. The Indian Urdu media published the news concerning announcement of Baghdadi’s Caliphate on the front pages. Not only that, one Urdu newspaper devoted its entire Sunday supplement to the Caliphate whereas Pakistani newspapers did not give much importance to the news on July 1.....

Are the Pakistanis Pseudo-Intellectuals?
Muhammad Jawad Tahir

With the rise of free media, several classic cases of pseudo-intellectualism have emerged in Pakistan, but only a few hold a special place in the ‘Pseudo-intellectualism Hall of Fame’. So what is pseudo-intellectualism?.....

Jailing of Al-Jazeera journalists: A proxy in the war between Qatar and Saudi Arabia
Robert Fisk

But the dictators of the Middle East only do to reporters what our own leaders would do to us, if they could. Didn’t a US delegation tell Saddam – before his Kuwait invasion – that his problem was with journalists? Didn’t the Americans shoot down our colleagues without compunction in Iraq? Haven’t the Israelis killed journalists and their assistants without punishment? When did you hear Americans or Brits complain about that? My guess is that Sisi will release the three Al Jazeera men on appeal. And we’ll thank him from the bottom of our Western hearts……

Pakistani Media and the ISI: A Demon Devouring Freedom of Expression

Under pressure from Pakistan army, Geo TV was banned for 15 days. Just before that, it made another mistake. In one of its morning shows, it played the video footage of the wedding of Veena Malik and Asad Malik with a traditional song that suggested that Veena Malik was like Hadhrat Fatima (R.A) and her husband was like Hadhrat Ali (R.A.) This created a controversy as the PEMRA, the regulatory authority of electronic media got 5000 complaints about the programme. Though the GEO broadcast apology on its channel, people, religious and militant organisations demanded blasphemy case slapped against the channel. .....

Fars News Objects to Arab Media Coverage of Iraq
Arash Karami

Since the Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) took over parts of north and west Iraq, the Al-Qaeda offshoot has altered the balance of power within Iraq and threatened to advance to Baghdad. Iran’s political closeness to the central government in Baghdad, its overall influence in Iraq and memories of an eight-year war fought against former leader Saddam Hussein has put Iran’s political elite and western border guards on alert…..

Is Media Freedom Under Serious Threat In Pakistan?
Mansoor Jafar

Strangely, the establishment expressed dissatisfaction over “negligible” punishment to Geo TV and moved for a tougher and permanent ban on Geo group, generating fears of leaving around 20 thousand journalists and other technical staff, employed in Geo and at least 15 publications of the parent Jang group, unemployed.....

Stones were pelted on mosques to provoke the Muslim for retaliation. Thankfully Muslims took it on their chin and demonstrated remarkable resilience. This all happened when it was not even established that this mischief was carried out by some fringe Muslim youth. However, there was deafening silence from mainstream media about this vandalism, till a Muslim IT professional was killed by the mob. The same media had criticised Mumbai Police Chief heavily during the Azad Maidan protest for showing restraint and not firing on unruly Muslim protestors......

Indeed, information is a source of learning; but unless it is organized, processed, and available to the right people in a format for decision making, it is a burden, not a benefit…..

People in Pakistan Living On Foolish Conspiracy Theories Galore
Babar Ayaz

Perhaps what is lacking is objective analysis of the issues and speaking out the bitter truth about our mistakes as a country and as institutions. The blame game that anybody who does not support the establishment’s point of view on national issues is a foreign agent should stop now otherwise we will never come out of the present mess.....

On The Road to ‘Fascistan’: Demonisation of Writers, Poets, Politicians, Media Persons, Religious Minorities and Even Austere Muslims
Dr Mohammad Taqi

If the rise in fascist tendencies were sporadic, the concern might have been a notch lower. However, the way religious zealots were unleashed over the last several weeks, in what appear an orchestrated move by a well-oiled machine, is alarmingly ominous....

Press Battle in Pakistan Feeds into Larger Conflict: Government vs. Military
Declan Walsh

A powerful array of critics, from Islamist extremists to slick-suited television hosts, have lined up behind the ISI to attack Geo. Rival channels have issued nightly tirades against the station, painting it as a patsy of India and the West……

Arab Newspapers May Soon Become ‘Extinct’
Ben Flanagan

Use of social media is extremely high in the developed Gulf Arab nations. Saudi Arabia has the world’s highest per-capita consumption of YouTube videos, while Twitter and Facebook use is also high…..

Pathetic Plight of Media in Pakistan

Pathetic Plight of Media in Pakistan
Mujahid Hussain, New Age Islam

Journalism, throughout the world, is known for its quest for news, asking questions and being told, but Pakistani journalism is distinguished with its aptitude for issuing statements and even Fatwas, if needed. An expert news analyst in our media would never accept that there could be an error in his report or that his views may have some flaws. ... There is no denying that the above phenomenon in Pakistan has transformed journalism from being a media of communication to a means to power....

Heart of the Matter
Najam Sethi

This is a different age too with passionate popular urges for democracy, accountability and radical “change” in line with similar sentiments across the Muslim world. The lawyers’ movement, the restoration of the independent judiciary with its focus on “missing persons” and fundamental rights, the rise of the PTI, and the demand for a neutral election commission and transitional caretaker governments are all testaments to this trend…...

Wrong Button
Shahzad Raza

Wrong Button
Shahzad Raza

Like a pack of hungry wolves, other news networks are more than eager to devour their largest rival. Journalists say there are two primary reasons behind the madness. First, corporate stakes are rather high. As the country’s largest network falls, it will benefit each one of them. Second, there are old scores to settle……

From My Prison Cell: Abdullah Elshamy
Abdullah Elshamy

There was apparent confusion.  He was trying to convince me to put an end to my hunger strike, saying that it was " a sin " one time , or that " Egypt needed me " another time.  So I replied: "Egypt needs me to be in prison?”....

The ISI, Taliban and the Media
Mohammad Nafees

All institutions, the government or the media industry, should avoid censoring facts or maligning any person(s) or institutions, civil or military, on flimsy or unsubstantiated proofs. All other debates or discussions are irrelevant.....

‘A bullet has been chosen for you’: Attacks on journalists in Pakistan, describes how the Pakistani authorities have almost completely failed to stem human rights abuses against media workers or to bring those responsible to account….

Onward From Indiscretions
Nasim Zehra

Equally, Geo’s irresponsible and illegal reporting which almost editorialized the man and the institution behind the target killing, (the ISI and the DG ISI), is condemnable. This was no journalism; it was baseless accusations and propaganda against a national institution and its head. Hamid Mir, the man then fighting for his life, had on record pointed the finger of blame towards both. Still, running an 8 hour unceasing accusation against the ISI chief was a shocking breach of journalistic ethics…..

For a time, Pakistan’s journalists were seen as messy champions of democracy: brave if sometimes flawed truth-tellers who helped oust the military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf and held up a critical mirror to their tempestuous country….
