Harassment Is a Forbidden and Deviant Behaviour, As It Encroaches On the Privacy, Freedom and Dignity of Women: Al-Azhar

“Al-Azhar says it offers a balanced religious discourse, but I do not see it. Al-Azhar continues to uphold Talaq and to differentiate between men and women in inheritance, which is biased against women, in my opinion,” she said. She added, “Al-Azhar has started to react positively to harassment, which is a very troubling issue to women. I believe the institution should continue to be involved in women’s affairs and open a door for dialogue with more women’s associations and civil society organizations. Al-Azhar ought to also offer a religious discourse that promotes women’s values and does not undermine their dignity.”...

Ideological Coercion: Enforcing Islamic Hijab in Iran
Shima Silavi

The rule of hijab in Iran keeps women in a more subordinate position. Every time they leave home they are forced to adjust their taste in clothing according to the criteria set out in the law, otherwise facing the consequences either through the police force or ordinary citizens. The way people choose to cover and dress themselves results from a mixture of factors that involve religion, culture, tradition and the environment but when the state abuses its power to change the natural course of development in society, it is no longer a cultural production, instead entering the ideological and political field....

Chief Rabbinate Disqualifies the Very Term ‘Rabbanit' and 'Female Rabbi'

In recent decades, Torah study by women has grown increasingly acceptable, with many serving as teachers, community leaders and spiritual guides. However, the learned women cannot be officially ordained as rabbis because the Chief Rabbinate has a monopoly on ordaining rabbis in Israel and it refuses to let women take the required exams. Absent the Rabbinate’s approval, many institutions of religious learning and progressive Orthodox rabbis have begun bestowing the title “Rabbanit” — the female form of the Hebrew word for rabbi...

Islamophobic Fear of Muslim Women in Burqa
Dr Robert D Crane

The first category of the Maqasid provides ontological guidance, consisting of respect for religious freedom (Haqq Al Din); for the sacredness of the individual person (Haqq al Nafs), including right to life; for the sacred nature of the derivative communities from family to nation to humankind and beyond (Haqq Al Nasl), including communitarian pluralism; and for our physical environment (Haqq Al Mahid, from Wahda or oneness)....

Women Have Always Been A Part Of Islam... But We Lack Female Muslim Leadership
Lin Taylor

Relegated to the basement, silenced by the imam and barred from the front door, some Muslim women have had enough of male domination at the mosque and are setting up their own. From Copenhagen to Los Angeles, a handful of female mosques now cater to Muslim women who want their own place of worship, just as men have had through the ages....

The Headscarf Has Evolved From a Spiritual Basis of Modesty and Equanimity to a Symbol of Political Identity
Rafia Zakaria

Young British Muslim women like Iftekhar are welcoming her choice, mainly for two reasons. First, it does away with the myth that Muslim women who wear the headscarf are forced to do so, making the garment a symbol of submission. Second, in increasing the public visibility of the headscarf by wearing it on the stage of a beauty pageant, Iftekhar is making a claim on inclusion and the fact that British Muslim women, including those who choose to cover their hair are an indelible and visible part of the British social fabric....

Pakistani Women Still Face Barriers in Their Patriarchal Society
Shagufta Gul

Hence, engaging women in a counter narrative against extremism and terrorism is as important as it is for the male population. Women from the most socio-economically vulnerable groups tend to be restricted to their households and are uneducated; this makes them more vulnerable to extremist ideologies. This, plus all the fake-news on the internet, thanks to social media, threatens to radicalise a large number of women. The Pakistani state and civil society must take note of this and act accordingly....

A Unified Nation Did Not Necessarily Need To Have ‘Uniformity’: Efforts Have To Be Made To Reconcile Our Diversity with Universal and Indisputable Arguments on Human Rights
Moin Qazi

There is a long list of Hadiths (Prophet’s sayings) and Qur’anic verses to support women’s rights: the right to education; the right to work and their right to keep the money they earn. It is much easier for the media to reduce the complex debate on Uniform civil Code to a series of clichés, slogans and sound bites, rather than examining root causes. There are numerous examples where personal laws and secular laws coexist .in fact, the deliberations of India’s Constituent Assembly which framed the Constitution clearly show that Uniform Civil Code was not the ultimate mandate.....
