Islamic Ideology

Objectively speaking, the definition of any concept pertaining to socio-cultural beliefs and practices is, in most cases, problematic and may have unsettling fallout for many. It will be like stating the obvious to say that Khatam-i-Nabuwwat acquired the centrality among rest of the postulates because of Ahmadi viewpoint which was not consistent with the mainstream Muslim belief. It will be pertinent to see it in juxtaposition to the Ahmadi belief regarding Khatam-i-Nabuwwat....

The Importance of Getting the Story Right on the Divine Plan Allah

Javed Ghamidi gives the same reasons for extremism as I do but differently worded. According to Javed Ghamidi, the following are the reasons for extremism the belief that it is the rightful duty of all Muslims to mete out the punishment of death to all the Kafir – polytheists, disbelievers and the apostates.

The belief that no one except the Muslims have a right to rule the world and the Muslims are therefore religiously bound to wage war to bring all non-Muslim countries under their rule. There should be only one government in the entire world and that should be the Islamic caliphate. The modern states are an embodiment of Kufr (disbelief), and therefore can have no place in Islam.....

The Muslim of the Quran, is therefore simply anyone who submits to God (by whatever name), and is a doer of good deeds. There are therefore only two kinds of people - those who stand for justice and against oppression are the friends and helpers of God and the oppressors are the enemies of humanity and of God.  The finding of this paper needs to be leveraged to transform young minds to think in terms of objective attributes of people, rather than in terms of the narrow stereo types based on a person’s religious identity. Since our theology says otherwise, we need to work to change it according to the clear message of the Quran brought out in this paper to remove the ideological basis for extremism among the Muslims and to promote greater co-operation with all good people of other faiths….

National Seminar at Jamia Millia Islamia on Islamic Humanism

Professor Wasey’s key message was that the Muslims believe in the Quran but do not follow it – “Quran Ko To Maante Hain, Lekin Quran Ki Nahin Sunte” and the fact that while the Prophet formed an Ummat-e-Wahida with people of all faiths in a common cause, the Muslims of later times failed to do so. Professor Pant said that the Hindus remember their history only from the days of partition and have forgotten earlier history. He said that Islamic influence has permeated all aspects of the life of Hindus from their food and the Halwa which has become the standard offering to the deity and distributed as “Prasad”, the dress, the language, the architecture, the classical music in which many of the forms are kept alive by the Muslim artists, the arts, poetry and the culture….

There is therefore a vast gulf which is unbridgeable, unless the Muslims believe in the whole of the Quran, and discard the secondary sources for an explanation of the Book. “And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord:" and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding”. There appear to be very few people of understanding across the spectrum of the “believers” and the “disbelievers”, providing proof thereby, that the playing field is very level indeed for all, and there is little difference among the people, except their deeds. False beliefs are common to all people, and the “believers” equally blaspheme God, their Prophet and their Book with their false beliefs....

Now if a Muslim person of this era quotes 8:60 or 9:5 or 9:13 in isolation disregarding consecutive reconciliatory verses (8:61, 9:6) and their context specificity (9:13) to instigate a group of his followers to commit any form of violence he is likening himself and his followers with the Prophet of Islam and his followers who were the direct recipients of the instructions of these verses. But such selective appropriation of Qur’an’s message to promote violence amounts to treacherous distortion of Qur’anic message....

Deobandis in South Asia — I

The Deobandi version of Islam in Pakistan is hardly what it started out to be in 1867 in India as a revivalist movement. The seven giants of the Islamic Jurisprudence of that time who established Dar-al Uloom Deoband included names like Rashid Ahmed Gangohi, Zulfiqar Ali, Shah Rafiuddin, Muhammad Yaqub and Muhammad Qasim Nanotvi. This religious seminary was once the second largest after Egypt’s Jamia Al-Azhar, and took on the tasks of spreading education, awareness and political reformation among the Muslims. This school, and school of thought gave birth to Jamiat-e-Ulmae Hind (JUH) in 1919.

Does The Quran Ask Us To Follow The Sunnat Of The Prophet?
Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The teaching of the religion or Allah’s Deen is through revelation of the Book to the Messengers of God or the prophets. The revelations are connected with the different phases in the prophetic mission and incidents. It was also therefore experiential learning for the prophet and the people of his times. The teaching is also by way of the stories of the previous prophets and their people. The prophet is also cited as the best model to follow since he epitomizes the Book in his words and deeds in the matter of following the religion as detailed in the Scriptures or revelations. ...

The Mutashaabihat Or The Allegorical Verses Of The Quran

There are therefore two types of verses – Muhkamat verses that use precise words in which we should take the literal meaning of the words and the Mutashaabihat verses that use a “tashabaha” or similitude and the similitude is not the reality itself but gives an approximate idea using what is familiar, to convey what is beyond our comprehension. While the word used is a similitude, the meaning of the verse itself is clear and never ambiguous.

The Meaning of the Quran Resonates With the Aims of Progressive Islam
Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

Islamic Shariat was influenced by the practical need to continue with the well-established laws in the conquered lands.  The Ahadith were compiled in the 9th century by At-Tirmidhi (Uzbek died 892), Imam Bukhari – (Uzbek died 870), Abu-Dawud (Persian died 889), Ibn Majah (Persian died 887), Al-Nasai (Persian died 915), Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj (Persian died 875), Ibn Hanbal (Arab died 855). The books of the first six compilers form part of the Kutub Al-Sittah or the six books. The fact that all the six major compilers were contemporaries in the era of Islam’s Golden period under the Abbasid dynasty could be because the compilation may have been a political project to bend Islam to the political compulsions of the Caliph. The Ahadith contradict the Quran on every subject and if these alleged sayings of the Prophet (pbuh) are authentic, then it would appear that the Prophet spent all his life preaching against the message of the Quran!

Science informs us that the world and time have a beginning. Science also informs us that what originates in time and at a point in time has a cause. Nothing happens by itself. There must be a cause therefore for the creation of the universe and this cause we call the Creator. Unless there is a cause for the creation of the Creator of this Universe, the Creator is the First Principle we call God. Every being and thing has a cause and every cause has its cause and if we go back in this series which cannot be infinite, we end at a cause that has no cause which is God who is uncaused and the cause of creation. If the world itself was uncaused, then the world itself would have been the first principle, and the atheists would have been right in rejecting the notion of a God who is among other things the Creator….

Without religion, there wouldn’t have been a civilization let alone the excellence man has achieved in the sciences and man would have been just another animal living the life it lived as a primitive. This fact however gets obscured because of the visible presence of the naïve fundamentalists who oppose reason and science. The atheists see religion with disdain as some appendage from the past, unable to acknowledge its contribution and relevance. Such intellectuals deserve being called ingrate rebels against God more than any other group of people, for they can surely ascertain the truth of a revealed Book such as the Quran. On the question of evolutionary biology, there is no need to doubt either Science or the Scriptures. The question is not as it is unfortunately posed “do you believe in evolutionary biology or do you believe in religion?....

Scholars are free to hold any view but if they take to lies or half-truths to support their views, they do far greater harm to their community than any good. They become conspirators and traitors.  And as for any Muslim scholar who dreams of editing the Qur’an or dismissing it altogether, he must learn lesson from history. The Moghul Emperor Akbar the Great who styled himself a reformer of Islām - arriving almost 1,000 years after the Prophet Muḥammad, introduced a modified version of Islam, Din e Ilahi. He couldn’t make even a score of converts in his long life. Where do people like the present day proponents of a modified Qur’an stand...

By definition the subscription to progressive Muslim thought also implies that the sacred scriptures cannot offer us humans an unequivocal, clearly accessible and once and for all valid understanding of God through the simple process of reading/interpretation. Instead, progressive Muslims’ consider the human interpreter and her subjectivities and contingencies as most significantly determinative of the process of interpretation envisaged as a never ending dynamic process that continually evolves with reason....

There is of course another way to look at the spending trend of this era. The people, who pay heavy taxes and are engaged in a time demanding and stressful job, need change and recreation to regain their energy with recreation, entertainment and travel – none forbidden in Islam. The Qur’an only forbids an obsessive craving to spending money with complete disregard of one’s social responsibilities. Such people, the Qur’an says, have no faith in God or the hereafter and are dominated by the Satan….

It Is Completely Wrong To Say That in Islam Blasphemy Is a Crime That Merits Capital Punishment
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

There is no such sentence in the Quran or in the Hadith. So, this claim that a person who blasphemes the Prophet should be killed is based entirely on Qiyas or Ijtihad. But, as pointed out earlier, in this matter, Qiyas and Ijtihad are not enough. For such a claim there must be a Nass, a textual reference in the Quran or Hadith, to support it, but since there is no such clear Nassin either of these two sources, it is completely wrong to say that in Islam blasphemy is a crime that merits capital punishment. The claim that blasphemy is a crime that merits capital punishment is the opinion of some Fuqaha or scholars of Muslim jurisprudence, but the mere opinion of these scholars is not enough to validate this claim of theirs....

Islam and Mysticism: What Else Is Confused With Soul? (Part 3)
Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

What we have clearly seen, is that neither Ruh nor Nafs mean “soul” in the Quran, and there is no other word in the Quran that means “soul” by its primary meaning. This article once again demonstrates the methodology for arriving at a correct understanding of the Quran without ambiguity, even when the scholars and the translators, all the imams and the Mufassereen, and the beliefs that we have grown up with, are all wrong. That is the strength of the Quran. ....

The Qur’an as a whole, including all of its aspects and traits, is a miracle that no one other than God can compose. Emphasising the eloquence of Qur’an essentially reduces it to a literary masterpiece or a work of art. This is far from the whole purpose of the Qur’an. The Book is certainly a literary miracle, but that should be thought of as a secondary feature and a by-product of the real theme of God’s Book. Furthermore, the Qur’an is a miracle for all mankind, in all places and at all times...

So the Muslims of the world – especially its leaders and educated elite must clearly understand the black and white distinction between ‘Sharia of Islam’ and the ‘Sharia Law of Islam’ (‘Islamic Law’) as this paper attempts to expound in very simple but compelling terms - otherwise they will live in perpetual confusion and chaos and allow a handful of proponents of Sharia Law to form mini-Caliphates, terrorize the whole world and create mayhems in their own lands.....

A lot of people have misunderstandings about Tasawwuf. Many think that it is something beyond Quran and Sunnah. Errant Sufis as well as superficial Ulema, although on the opposite ends of the spectrum, are together in holding this mistaken notion. Consequently the first group has shunned the Quran and Hadith while the second group has shunned Tasawwuf....

Islam and Mysticism: Is ‘Ruh’ Soul? (Part 2)

The Quran has come by inspiration to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The verse also says that what has come by inspiration is not all “mystical” knowledge, but only a little. However, another verse 5:3 says “This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”. The primary purpose of the revelation was therefore to give mankind the complete Deen or the Islamic way of life, while also giving us a little of the “mystical” knowledge on a need to know basis or to the extent we are capable of understanding using similitudes or allegorical language....

With the break-up of joint family system, reduction in family size to just an off-spring or a few siblings, loosening of family ties due to globalization impacts – that is relatives spread across the world and absence of stranded travellers in our cities and towns or our neighbourhood, the statements of the above sound outdated and archaic – they sound no alarm bells. Many liberal Muslims, those seeking the easy highway of life, and the terrorists and extremists – who speculate over the ambiguous verses of the Qur’an with nefarious or political motives may simply ignore them or consign them to the antiquity. But it will not take a great deal of reflection to realize that the above questions are no less relevant for this era than they were in the era of revelation. In fact they are bright red lights on the moral pathways of our life today. But we don’t see them or pretend not to see them. …

The Terrorist Acts of ISIS Are Categorically Forbidden—Evidences from the Quran and Hadith

There is not an iota of doubt that the crimes of ISIS — beheading, killing of innocent people including Muslims and non-Muslims, bombing public places, suicide attacks or disfiguring the dead bodies—all are categorically forbidden and anti-Islamic acts. Compare such acts of ISIS to the following Quranic verses and a number of Ahadith and it will be clear ISIS does not represent the true form of Islam. ….

Both Maulana Azad and Maulana Husain Ahmed Madani presented strong theological arguments to support the modern concept of nation-states. The idea that all Muslims are like one nation has brought Muslims nothing but destruction. It is also very impractical. I strongly believe that it is time that Muslims from all around the world should stop believing in this unfeasible concept and protect and safeguard the interests of their own respective states.
