Haj: Pilgrimage of Heart
Kashif Shahzada
Haj: Pilgrimage of Heart
Kashif Shahzada

The Haj is indeed a life-changing experience when it is done as the Quran says “Lillah” or for Allah and no one else (3:97). Its motivation is the love of Allah; and it is a hardship undertaken only for His sake. The transformation takes place by self-imposed regulations for a fixed number of days and by experiencing some events which will all leave their mark on the pilgrim....

The two unstitched pieces of white cloth that men wear during the Hajj, strips them of clothes that could reveal worldly status. This Ihram that male pilgrims wear resembles the shroud used to wrap a body before it is lowered into a grave. This serves as reminder of death and the afterlife.....

Of late, Darul Uloom Deoband issued a strongly-worded fatwa declaring the Tablighi Jama’at "misguided" and the “preacher of perverted views". Deoband seminary has also urged the current chief of the Tablighi Jama’at, Maulvi Sa'ad Kandhalvi to ‘repent in the court of God’. Accusing him of ‘an ideological perversion, misinterpretation of Islamic texts and desecration of Prophethood’, the fatwa pronounced by the Deoband clergy has stated: “It is our religious duty to warn Muslims particularly those with the Tablighi jam ‘at that Maulvi Sa'ad Kandhalvi, the current chief of the Jama’at, is misinterpreting Quran and Hadith”. ....

The main reason behind incidents of terrorism being carried out by the Muslims, is the religious thoughts that are being taught in Madrasas and what are the teachings being delivered to them in their political movements. And there are four things that every Madrasa teaches and every religious thinker preaches, if not in front of you, but he certainly preaches it. And what are those four things, Listen, I will tell you....

A feeling of citizenship can arise among Pakistanis only if all of them have identical rights and responsibilities. This requires several actions on part of the state including removal of laws that discriminate against religious minorities and promotion of pluralism....

Simply, designate the child so killed as an object of sacrifice, and close to the religious sacrifice external to the precinct of Hajj. What is more, honour the child as the martyr “Shaheed” for the politician’s imperatives! Thus many birds are killed with one stone. The politician gains a symbol for his cause, the child is elevated as Jannati entitled to enter paradise and the parents raised to the exalted position of – however very reluctantly and heartbroken though – to apostolic status of Ibrahim the Haneef, the apostle who willingly (almost) sacrificed his son and in whose name this festival is celebrated....

Eid-ul-Adha: Remembering Abraham’s Sacrifice
Moin Qazi, New Age Islam

Eid-ul-Adha isn’t just a time to reflect on sacrifices, but it is a time to reflect on the universality of the world’s religions. Sacrificing ourselves for others is what we all can learn from Abraham. Believers and nonbelievers alike can appreciate the human capacity to sacrifice one’s most prized possession for one’s beloved.....

In Islamic scriptures (the Qur’an and the Sunnah), There are plenty of evidence on intrinsic supremacy of the Ramadan over all the other months of the Islamic calendar, and the same holds true for its last ten days (Asharah Akheerah) over its earlier two Asharas, as Laylatul Qadr, popularly known as The Night of Power falls on the odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th), of this Asharah, which is described batter then a thousand months, in the Holy Qur’an, Because in this night Qur’an was revealed to Prophet (PBUH), and the angels and the Spirit descend on earth. Since we all are observing the last Asharah of Ramadan, this Article will discuss what Allah (SWT) wants form us to fully observe it, in order to attain salvation from Hellfire.

We can take or not take their take on an issue but we can’t afford to be old selves after reading them. Encountering such philosophers is like encountering spiritual Masters who indelibly mark us. They open up our eyes and one begins to see another world. One learns to appreciate the other, the other point of view or other paths to truth....

So brothers if you’re planning to follow the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad regarding marriage and polygamy, please consider all of the above, and if after reading that you’re still game, Masha Allah you’re a better man than me!....

Sustained cultural relevance to distinct peoples, diverse places, and different times underlay Islam’s long success as a global civilization.”  So the strength of Islam, the reason it has survived and thrived as a religion in the past 13 centuries comes from the fact that it accepts and is flexible enough to compliment believers of diverse backgrounds.....

If the troubles and disagreements over Al-Aqsa resurface, there is little doubt the movement will act to support their fellow Palestinians in Jerusalem in defence of a mosque that is holy to the entire Islamic world. If they do not, its members will feel that they have lost their raison d’etre....

The heart-wrenching picture of a Yemeni child drinking water from a leaked pipeline in the war-raged country has shamed humanity. The picture recently went viral on social media but failed to soften the heart of those who have orchestrated the Yemen civil war along sectarian lines, killing more than 10,000 civilians and wounding over 40,000 others....

Suddenly, a sceptical middle-aged Muslim man passed by, dressed in a business suit and carrying a clipboard, he certainly seemed in a hurry as he bluntly and anxiously asked: “what is this?” Upon giving him a pamphlet and explaining the event’s activities, he replied unabashedly: “this is a waste of time; none of these speakers are scientists or published authors in the New York Times best sellers!”...

The Muslim tradition however has no basis in their Faith system derived from the source Book the Quran, which they claim to be their guiding Book to submit to the ‘Will of God’. Because in there, the Creator of the Universe declares that:

22-37: Neither their flesh, nor their blood reaches God but to Him is acceptable only the observance of the duty on your part. Thus has He made them (animals) subservience to you that you may glorify God for guiding you to the right path. And give good news to those who do good to others....

Atheism is not illegal in Egypt or Iraq, but officials often level blasphemy or other charges against atheists in those countries. Those rejecting the faith face the death sentence in Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Mauritania.

“When we talk about renewing religious rhetoric, we mean the main content [of their teachings],” he said. “If al-Azhar created these kiosks while thinking that this is renewing religious rhetoric, then they don’t get it. They are doing this to evade making any real changes.”...

There are two sub sects of Sufism – Naqshbandi and Qadiriyya. While Naqshbandi strictly forbids music, Qadiriyya uses it as a tool to spread the message of peace, love, harmony and the deity of the Lord. Many famous Sufis have used music as a medium to spread their teachings, namely, Baba Bulleh Shah, Ameer Khusro, Sachal Sarmast, Shah Hussain and Shah Abdul Latif Bhatai....

There is also a new movement of atheists in countries such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, which takes the form of secret societies. A 2012 WIN/Gallup International poll showed that 5 percent of Saudis identified as atheists — more than in the United States — while 19 percent did not consider themselves religious, in a country that punishes unbelief with death. An average of 22 percent expressed doubts about religion elsewhere in the Middle East....

If Muslim states have paid no attention to the Ummah, non-state actors have paid even less. They have slaughtered tens of thousands of co-religionists. The Afghan Taliban and the Pakistani Taliban are like two wings of the same bird. One kills Afghan Muslims, the other kills Pakistani Muslims. One finds shelter in Pakistan, the other in Afghanistan. The militant Islamic State group seems to be everywhere and kills with even less concern....

Sufi orders formed in the ninth and tenth centuries as spiritual movements to bypass the legalism of the Ulema and the worldliness and luxury of the caliphate. At a time when Islam was becoming dogmatic, claiming that Muhammad’s religion was the only true faith and that the Qur’an was the only valid scripture, Sufis saw God everywhere, even in pagan traditions. At a time when the Ulema had closed the gates of Ijtihad, regarding revelation as complete, Sufis sought new revelations from God. At a time when the Ulema preached a God of law, Sufis spoke of God as love....

Now imagine a student from a madrasa who began his education with an amount raised through Zakat and ends up earning his livelihood through Zakat. I personally know of several madrasas in Delhi who, due to the delay in payments from various boards, call and ask for help. Is this the society we want to make? The importance of a Hafiz-e-Quran (one who remembers the Holy Quran by heart and implements it) is mentioned with the highest honour and reverence in both the Quran and Hadiths. Now, what is the average salary of a Hafiz — not more than Rs 10,000 plus food through Tiffins....

Often students of Madaris participate in public meetings/protest of their affiliated political parties to help perpetuate their political pursuits. It also impinges on cognitive development of young students. This needs to be restrained. Some Madaris have links with proscribed militant organizations. This linkage is dangerous and needs to be broken ruthlessly. ..

Following the introduction of the Qisas and Diyat law the crimes affecting human body are no longer considered offences against the society or state, but are now considered offences against an individual. Thus, if these individuals so decide, offenders can walk free even after committing heinous crimes like murder. The legal heirs of a deceased have the right to make a compromise with the offender under section 309 and 310...

Ismat Chughtai (1915–91), one of the most powerful voices in Urdu literature of the 20th century, was known for her free and fearless explorations of feminine sexuality and middle-class morality in her writing, and for the fierce determination with which she defended her right to express herself. While she wrote prolifically, her best-known work is the short story Lihaaf (Quilt), which explores the theme of homoeroticism and for which she was brought before a judge on charges of obscenity – along with Saadat Hasan Manto, who was being tried on the same charge for his story Bu (Odour)....
