Can You Believe It? Aristotle in Pakistan

Can You Believe It? Aristotle in Pakistan
Syed Kamran Hashmi

With the beginning of the Renaissance and the end of the Dark Ages, Europeans challenged all of Aristotle’s ideas.  Can you believe that Aristotle resides in Pakistan nowadays? Almost 2,500 years ago in Greece, while writing about his observations on animal behaviour, Aristotle had said the following about women: “Females are weaker and colder in nature, and we must look upon the female character as being a sort of natural deficiency”....

“It was very important to read the Holy Qur’an with understanding but now it has become compulsory for at least Muslims to read the Quran with understanding because we see that because of the deliberate mistranslation of the Quran, radicalism, orthodoxy and terrorism are on the rise. We need a huge chunk of Muslims, if not all, to know the meaning of the Quran quite well so that they can counter the wrong ideology of the fanatics and save our children from turning them into ogres.”...

The 1955 short story by Saadat Hasan Manto was based on inmates of lunatic asylums being split in the wake of Partition — with Hindu and Sikh inmates being transferred to India and Muslim inmates going to Pakistan. In the year of Manto’s birth centenary, the day-long seminar will dwell on the fact that the Urdu writer’s story reflected the actual transfer of inmates between the two countries based on their faiths, and what it meant for us and them....

Almost all religions and way of life espouse middle-of-the-road modesty, be it in appearance, attitude or approach. And, it is that modesty which allows such “way of life and living” to not only survive, but thrive over centuries. In Islam, the Creator prescribes moderation as the ideal way in our dealings, and Prophet Mohammad encouraged Muslims to shun both extremes and to be moderate in every facet of life....

The Quran: Read it and Understand it – I

The Quran: Read it and Understand it – I

The word Qur’an comes from the Arabic root word ‘Qara’ which means a collection to read, a book meant to be read. It is a proclamation to humanity. It is a Book of Wisdom (10:1, 31:2, and 36:2). The Quran makes things clear (15:1, 25:33, 26:2, 27:1, 28:2, 36:69-70, 43:2). It is both good news as well as warning (17:9-10). It is a healing and mercy to all of us (17:82).  I don’t think we can derive all these benefits only by reading the Quran, without any understanding. We can truly avail of all the good and the guidance only if we read the Quran with understanding, i.e., besides reciting in Arabic; we should also read in the language we understand the best. …

Once upon a time there used to be only three career choices for high school graduates in Pakistan: medicine, engineering and military. Top students chose to be doctors, the above-average ones ended up as engineers, and those not good enough for either, were eagerly accepted into the ranks of armed forces. The English teacher is still pronouncing ‘measure’ and ‘pleasure’ as mayee-yer and playee-yer, and the student is still relying on rote and tuition to pass the exam....

The spirituality of the Muslim pilgrimage is being ruined by skyscrapers and traffic jams around the holy site, while rising costs mean it is a ritual that only the rich can afford At this rate, hajj soon will become a materialistic ritual, a showground for the super rich to display their wealth and nobility. I badly miss the hajj that reconnects me with the prophet Abraham and helps me to centre God in my life....

... Should anyone understand the hidden and mystical meanings of these words or reflect upon 'Akhlaq-e-Muhammadi' or 'the etiquette and behaviour of the Prophet' he will hopefully understand the Quran when it says 'let not hatred of others to you make you swerve to run and depart from justice. So it is imperative for Muslims to understand that nothing can be gained from a siege mentality. They are proud citizens of India and they shall remain so. Like the majority of Hindus, the majority of Muslims also share the same access to law and the Constitution of India. But to that end they must resist the minority that resort to unconstitutional ways rather than address issues through legal means....

Showcasing the value of ‘manners’ an Islamic tradition says: “He whose manners are bad tortures himself.” (22)  And in order to save ourselves inflicting tortures on ourselves we have to make good manners our way of life and follow the rightful path shown by Allah and His Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). He forgives our sins for no better reason than ‘the pleasure of the people on the earth’. Islamic, cultured, civilised and smiling society is going to be the most powerful answer to all the hate speeches, Insha Allah....

The Economics of Haj: Money and Pilgrimage
High-rise luxury hotels have sprung up all over Mecca
The Economics of Haj: Money and Pilgrimage

The millions who come to Mecca every year bring billions of dollars to the Saudi economy. Restaurants, travel agents, airlines and mobile phone companies all earn big bucks during the Hajj, and the government benefits in the form of taxes. Last year, the 10-day event generated some $10bn (£6.2bn), according to the Chamber of Commerce in Mecca. However much it costs, Muslims will not stop coming to this spiritual and also commercial hub. ...

At the end of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj, Muslims throughout the world celebrate the holiday of Eid-al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice). During the Hajj, Muslims remember and commemorate the trials and triumphs of Prophet Abraham. The Qur'an describes Abraham as follows: An-Nahl (The Bee) 16:120 – “VERILY, Abraham was a man who combined within himself all virtues, devoutly obeying God's will, turning away from all that is false, and not being of those who ascribe divinity to aught beside God:”...

The ban comes in the context of a horrifically literal and gratuitous application of Sharia law in all aspects of daily life. Militiamen are cutting off the hands and feet of thieves or stoning adulterers. Smokers, alcohol drinkers and women who are not properly attired are being publicly whipped. As one well-known Touareg musician from Kidal tells me: "There's a lack of joy. No one is dancing. There are no parties. Everybody's under this kind of spell. It's strange."...

The incident took place in 1936 when, in British-ruled, un-partitioned India, Hindus were in a majority unlike their numbers in present-day Pakistan. Kori was a resident of what was then the North West Frontier Province and Noor Ali came from the Waziristan tribal agency. The tribal Muslims, however, did not take the return of the girl lying down. For the next 11 years there was a rebellion against the British, led by a local Pakhtun leader known as the Fakir of Ippi....

The displays at the Ramadan assembly are copies of the Qur’an, a couple of prayer mats, and an odd poster. There is the standard, solemn recitation of the Qur’an. In contrast, the Diwali assembly is a riot of colour, costume, dance and music. Ditto for Chinese New Year. Not surprisingly, the pupils enjoy themselves thoroughly and, unlike the Ramadan event, look forward to them eagerly....

Lahore is full of intoxicated men. Among the poor they are known as jahaaz ("aeroplanes"), probably for their endless mental flying. I recently met a group of five "aeroplanes" near the historic Lakshmi Chowk. They were sitting beside the footpath. All around them the traffic was in a great rush but they were blissfully unaware of it. I bought some peaches guavas from a fruit stall and walked over to the group of aero planes. Their clothes gave off a foul stench of urine...

There is a general misconception about the traditional slavery as if it is an institution created or nurtured by Islam. The fact is the other way round and Islam has actually played a pivotal role in abolishing the custom of enslaving people which existed when the last Prophet (saw) proclaimed his message of the revival of Islam at the beginning of the 7the century A.D....

The fact is, shows like Citizen Khan are essential in multicultural societies and help put all communities on an equal footing — if everyone can have a laugh at everyone else’s expense, then no one can claim superiority. This logic has made the quirks and peculiarities of minority communities fair game for comedy for decades; indeed, Woody Allen elevated it to an Oscar-winning art with his jibes against Manhattan’s Jewish community.

What in God’s name is wrong with Pakistan? Just when you think things cannot get any worse, something more outrageous happens to stretch the limits of your sensibilities. The first country to be founded in the name of Islam has suffered the most at the hands of those championing the faith.

Pakistan: Our Moenjodaro Connection
Ghazi Salahuddin

It is Indus that serves as our life-line, that holds the country together – and you only have to look at the map to comprehend this reality. Hence, Moenjodaro is part of our own heritage and it should have a bearing on how we decipher the history of this land.  Essentially, Moenjodaro is a certification of our South Asian identity and it is this identity that the ideologues of Pakistan tend to discard.

A Decaying State Kills Its Minorities

According to World Minority Rights Report 2011, Pakistan ranks as the 6th worst country after some African states in respect of safety and rights of minorities. This includes non-Muslims, those the state has dubbed non-Muslim, and women. Ironically, this behaviour also includes persecution of non-Muslims through forced conversion to Islam, through forcible marriages of non-Muslim girls to Muslims, and apparently willing conversion of non-Muslims to Islam to secure themselves against persecution.

The Holy Quran has zero references to the punishment of blasphemy. Hegemonic to the extent of being demonic, Pakistani Muslims are blasphemy-obsessed. Not a single voice from the Muslim clergy community has been raised on the issue of the 11-year-old born with Down syndrome girl, accused of burning pages of the Holy Scripture, and her consequent jailing.

The chapter “Pakistan, an Islamic State” in the same textbook of Punjab board includes this line: “Hindus harmed Muslims in every way.” The content analysis has been published in Urdu to generate a debate on how the inclusion of discriminatory content in curriculum sows seeds of hatred, and to ensure that the review reaches maximum people.

Male Circumcision: the cruellest cut?

Male Circumcision: the cruellest cut?

While the American Academy of Paediatrics (APP) has concluded that the health benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks and the procedure is a matter of parental choice, outraged opponents call it male genital mutilation, or child abuse. Many parts of Europe concur. A court in Cologne this summer ruled that circumcision contravened the rights of a child to decide later in life on his religious beliefs.

The diversity of feminist positions in the Middle East may be surprising to some in the West. Some feminists are secular and believe that religion should be kept out of debates on women’s rights. Within the secular camp, liberal, socialist and radical feminists are working on issues that include reproductive rights, fighting gender based violence, ending discrimination in politics and employment and economic justice.

The trends are still early but it would seem that a new sense of victimhood and the larger process of radicalisation in the wider Islamic world are tempting Indian Muslims into experimenting with interventions outside of the mainstream “secular” parties. There is no indication, as yet, to suggest that these disparate movements will coalesce in an all-India body.
