Islamic Society

Sufi shrine culture in Pakistan is multi-faceted and diverse; while hashish does not feature uniformly across cultures of traditional shrines, hashish-smoking is a visible, communal, and conspicuous activity associated with Qalandari shrines in Pakistan. Paradoxically, it is also one of the least studied phenomena as meaningful in terms of Islam; despite its prominence in Islamic settings, it is frequently dismissed as merely illegal and representative of the degeneration of Islamic ideals....

I ask myself, have we, as academics, failed, and that too, quite miserably? I feel like confessing and saying yes, we have indeed failed. Or, we can possibly console ourselves that only a minuscule fringe of former students have indulged in moral policing on social media, expressing extreme intolerance, hurling the filthiest of abuses against some former students, while some of them even threatened to lynch and kill the alleged 'wrongdoers'....

Zakat, a pillar of Islam, mandates that Muslims give 2.5 percent of our wealth to those in need. Fuelled by this, Muslim Americans donate consistently and generously to philanthropy. Ramadan is prime time for Muslim American fund-raising efforts, and it is common for Muslim non-profit organizations and mosques to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to alleviate humanitarian crises in places like Syria, Yemen and Somalia....

An elderly person of her family to whom she related her comfortable Sunnah of Hijrat, reminded her of the “ordeal” of the Apostle, and his only companion during his Hijrat to Madinah, travelling ten times the distance in the desert on foot, escaping the city with their lives in the dead of the night. He referred her to Chapters 9 & 17 of Quran.

- In a small gathering of friends to welcome back a hajji couple, a Sunnah was enacted by a priestly looking person who was offered the customary sip of Zamzam. He stood up, turned in the direction of Qiblah and gulped the water down, announcing that, that was the established Sunnah of Rasool. Other drinks, he said, the Rasool drank sitting down and not facing the Qiblah.....

Most Muslims that I know do not decorate their houses and yards for Eid. This might be because they don’t want to seem like oddballs who have lights up for no apparent reason in the middle of June. It might be because they are afraid of drawing attention to themselves due to the rising number of hate crimes against Muslims....

Eid is a day of peace. When the Muslim establishes peace within his heart by obeying the laws of Allah and leading a disciplinary life, he has certainly concluded a most inviolable treaty of peace with Allah. Once a person is at peace with Allah, he is at peace with himself and consequently, with the rest of the universe. So, when someone celebrates the Eid in the right manner, he is actually celebrating the conclusion of a peace treaty between himself and Allah....

Darul Qazas or Sharia Courts: Why both must be Opposed?

Darul Qazas or Sharia Courts: Why both must be Opposed?
Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

It must be underlined though that equating this with something like a Sharia court is clearly a misnomer. Courts have the ‘power’ to adjudicate over issues; the Darul-Qaza will have no such power and as such will be more like arbitration councils. To be fair to the AIMPLB, such quasi-judicial bodies do exist in other communities, such as the Khap Panchayats in Western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. In some tribal areas, these bodies even have legal recognition. Thus, the establishment of Darul Qaza may well within be the ambit of law. Demanding for a ban on Darul Qazas while remaining silent on Khaps is clearly hypocritical. It should also be understood that Darul Qazas have been functioning in this country since at least 1972....

Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan is a ritual Muslims look forward to and enjoy every year. It is the month where we seek our souls for the ultimate spirituality and connection with God through different methods, including exercising as a way of taking care of our health and fitness.....

The moon-sighting debate reflects wider divides in Islam. Different ideologies jostle for control, with Western modernists pushing for change against Saudi Arabia’s staunch traditionalism. Younger Muslims may be taking matters into their own hands: Google searches for “moon sighting” spike before each Eid. But as long as Islam remains decentralised and the Koran ambiguous, it is unlikely that Muslims will ever agree....

But let’s not digress from the spiritual and meditative aspects of this holy festival that spans 29-30 days, ending with the joyous sighting of the iconic sliver of the moon that would signify Eid ul-Fitr. The purpose of the month itself is to mainly inculcate three things among believers, “the spirit of God-fearing, the spirit of thanksgiving and the spirit of patience,”...

Quran also condemns corruption and those who practice it and enjoins on Muslims not to indulge in corruption. Quran asks Muslims not to take away the property of the orphans or weak people and not to substitute mean quality ingredients for good ones and not to devour things meant for the orphans and the poor. Quran also discourages hording of wealth and good depriving the people of their share in it. “To orphans restore their property (When they reach their age), nor substitute (your) worthless things for (their) good ones; and devour not their substance (by mixing it up) with your own. For this is indeed a great sin”.(Al Nisa: 2) “Those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, eat up a Fire into their own bodies” Al Nisa: 10)...

Performing a religious obligation is up to you and it is something between you and Allah. However, good ethics is something between you and other people. In other words, if we do not put Islamic ethics into action and practice, corruption will become rampant and disgrace will be our future. We should not judge a person based on how he performs religious obligations for he might be a hypocrite....

My Most Moving Ramadan Was In Makkah and Madinah
Mohammed Azhar Ali Khan

My most moving Ramadan, however, was in Makkah and Madinah. Being in the holy mosque in Makkah and Madinah is always overwhelming – with people of all backgrounds, dressed simply, praying together. It humbles you to be in the holy places as a part of the human family. I feel most at ease in Makkah and Madinah....

Sufi masters Bulleh Shah and Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya were vegetarians. So was poet Kabir. Yet many Muslims genuinely believe that vegetarianism goes against the tenets of the religion. But there are others who passionately disagree. They say the Prophet was against overindulging in food — whether meat-based or not — on any occasion. He always recommended moderation. Though he was not a vegetarian, his favourite foods were said to be yoghurt, butter, nuts, cucumbers, dates, pomegranates and figs.....

When this does not happen, we are left with men such as Khadim Rizvi, who recently demanded that members of the Ahmadi community be either forced to convert or beheaded. This does not appear to be a sensible notion. Yet, while other social media content has been deleted or blocked, speeches by Rizvi and others like him continue to be accessible to millions....

For example, recently, there is an online discussion about how do Muslims, living in the vicinity of the North Pole, who are living without nights or with very short nights enjoy Ramadan? Therefore, knowledge concerning religion and society is constantly enriched and improved, keeping up with the times as well. Most Muslims are feeling uncomfortable for this year’s Ramadan which is held in summer. Only those who live in the southern hemisphere may feel better. Ramazan is full of deep religious meaning and cultural connotation, increasingly embodying the global nature, which should be worth studying seriously....

Primarily there are two religions on the planet Monotheism and Polytheism. These are poles that attract ‘for harmony’ or ‘disrupt’ social order respectively. It is also evidenced amply over time that Monotheism is a divine recipe whilst Polytheism is a man made craft however intended....

“Muslims of India” is now expanding its operations and will go out to NGOs and night shelters as well to distribute Iftar packets to people in need, irrespective of their religious identity. “It is a must for Muslims to do charity and in the month of Ramzan, almost all Muslim households give more away in alms etc. than other months of the year. But to see people from different faiths join us in our activities or help less better-off Muslims is heart warming,”...

Closing shop when you’re supposed to work like any other day, only to come out of hibernation at sunset to feast, does not exactly jive well with the spiritual endeavour to be closer to God. If fasting is supposed to remind Muslims, even remotely, of what it is like for the poor to have to fast by force and be hungry most of their lives, I dare say that working during the day is but a small start....

Ramazan offers an alternative to living life on auto-pilot. Ramazan is the gift of intentional living. If we can go hungry all day without making excuses, what else can we do in life, if we put our heart and mind into it? No matter how your year went, Ramazan is the chance for a new beginning. It shows us what we’re capable of doing. It shows us what the best version of ourselves could look like....

The classic “profile” (21-year old single male) was shattered again, as entire families in Indonesia and dozens of Palestinians carried out attacks that required their deaths. The inspiration for such disparate populations to sacrifice themselves and their children was their desire to become holy “martyrs.”...

Moderation has not only much to say about the personal conduct of individuals and the community’s collective ethos, but also on the use of the earth’s resources and care for its natural environment. The substance of this teaching is elsewhere endorsed in the Quran where the text speaks of balance (al-Mizan) in the creation of this earth and the terrestrial universe, all of which have been created in a state of grand natural equilibrium, “so weigh all things fairly and do not disturb the (God-ordained) balance.” (al-Rahman, 55:7)....

Fasting from dawn to sundown during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with: Tauheed, a Muslim’s declaration of faith in one Allah; Salah, the saying of prayers five times a day; Zakat, a religious obligation for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth, which is considered a sort of tax or obligatory alms; and the Hajj pilgrimage....

Secularists are behaving as if anything that we touch even distantly related to religion will defile the constitution. They forget what the Father of the Nation said: “I am ready, I am a Bengali, I am a human being, I am a Muslim.”  He was secular and he was a Muslim. We never fought, as many would say, to get rid of religion, but to get rid of exploitation in the name of religion.....

Rules and laws cannot ensure a permanent solution as the attitudes of the minds of the people must be changed from centuries of the narrow educational construct of ‘me and the other’ in social and political relationships. Knowledge of science and technology are not the real keys to a proper civilisational success. Those who wield the tools and knowledge of science and technology must be imbued with the quality of human and humane constructs...
