Islamic Society

In the banality of our daily routines, we often get the sense that we have control over the events of our days; that we can do and have anything we want. But the reality is we can never know what the future holds for us. All of our plans, ambitions and goals, indeed every step we take, are at God’s will. Even the Quran has prompted us to never say ‘I shall certainly do this tomorrow’, without adding, ‘if God so wills’. If we put our trust in God, He will most definitely guide you the right path, the path best for you....

In fact, those pundits underestimate Islamists’ economic opinions including on interest rates. Yet, there is a wider illusion of seeing Islamists as if their sole aim was a social transformation, such as in the wearing of headscarves or banning alcohol. Many miss that Islamism in Turkey also aims at a radical economic transformation. The Islamist agenda is never limited to social transformation. ....

God is using the modern day Hulagu Khans tyrants to assist the Muslim confronting armies, to tell them the errors of their ways (3-11). Yet, 7-179 ...they have hearts with which they understand not, eyes with which they see not and ears.... With the advantage of these schisms even politically motivated wars, death and utter destruction of the so called Muslim world is a fact of life, more so today. The myth that monotheistic and monolithic Muslim Nation/Ummah exists, has long been busted! And this is for people who say they believe in a Law-book that tells them – 109-6 Lakum Deenukum Wa-Liaddeen- 'live and let live’. But, sheer ignorance of the laity of basic principles laid down by the holy Book prevails, under the commercial, political and in this case cultist imperatives. Can this nexus in the name of Islam ever be broken by any Muslim State?....

Arab petro-states may enjoy Western levels of consumption but lack Western levels of productivity. Their poor showing in the index is one indication of the mountain they have to climb to find non-oil sources of growth. Under their “rentier” system, ruling families extract rents from oil and gas exports, and distribute the revenues in the form of easy government jobs (mostly for men) and generous benefits, not least subsidised fuel, electricity and water....

Nevertheless, there is confusion among pundits in naming the power holders of the new regime. Some still have the opinion that, despite revolutionary political changes led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Turkish state is still dominated by the traditional actors usually dubbed the “deep state”...

At the time, Prince Abdullah organized the kingdom’s first national dialogue conference that brought together 30 religious scholars representing Wahhabi and non-Wahhabi Sunnis, Sufis, Ismaili, and Shiites. Remarkably, the Wahhabi representatives did not include prominent members of the kingdom’s official religious establishment. Moreover, the presence of non-Wahhabis challenged Wahhabism’s principle of takfir or excommunication of those deemed to be apostates or non-Muslims that they often apply to Sufis and Shiites....

Our erroneous practice of Islam is the reason behind the poor image many non-Muslims have of it. Muslims’ true dilemma lies in their desire to impose, literally, the teachings of our idealistic holy book on universal citizens. Actually, by working on ourselves as individuals, we will realize the perfect Islamic society that we desire — without using force.

“Whoever wills let him believe. And whoever wills, let him disbelieve” and “whoever is guided is only guided for (the benefit of) himself” are two explicit verses from the Holy Qur’an explaining that belief is a personal, liberal choice made by individuals for their own benefit....

In the Islamic model, he said, the people could grow as much wealth as they wanted but they must also share with the less fortunate. He said there were some practical issues he needed to study further, such as Shariah compliance, but overall the Islamic economic model was more holistic. “The Islamic model is needs-based, not a Bumiputera policy but one based on Islam, and minorities are protected in Islam....

All of us seek to spread the good news we know; we are all interested in advising people to seek what we consider to be the best book, best food, best university, best philosopher and so forth. Every philosopher has thus sought to convince others and thus to “convert.” So it is natural for man to invite others even if not overtly to what one’s religion or advocate why one’s path helps better. This explains how one can be a religious pluralist – not call bad names of others’ gods, suspend judgment regarding any particular persons’ fate till the Last Day, respect freedom of choice of others to choose even hell for themselves, ....

Unlike in many other Muslim nations, Indonesia’s Islamic parties and movements are splintered—and are represented both in the president’s and Mr. Prabowo’s camps. This means that those backing the president—and likely indispensable for his re-election—are trying to leverage their influence to achieve a long-term objective: to further Islamize Indonesia’s society....

According to the Pew Research Centre, 100,000 people convert to Islam annually, but roughly the same numbers of people leave the religion too. Don’t be the reason someone has to think twice about Islam because they’re practicing “incorrectly” according to your standards. You need to rethink your societal stereotypes and strive to make everyone feel at ease, starting at the mosque....

To be sure, the United States, which repeatedly saw ultra-conservative Islam as a useful tool during the Cold War, was long supportive of Saudi propagation of Islamic puritanism that also sought to counter the post-1979 revolutionary Iranian zeal. Nonetheless, Saudi Arabia’s more recent wrestle with what it defines as moderate and effort to rebrand itself contrasts starkly with long-standing perceptions of Morocco as an icon of more liberal interpretations of the faith....

Small but visible concessions on women’s rights come with political benefits too: They demonstrate that Saudi shares the values of would-be foreign investors, and send a message that this is a regime worth siding with against Islamists, including the Iranians. But little has changed when it comes to the legal and social strictures on women in Saudi society. And under Prince Mohammed, little seems likely to....

Sufi shrine culture in Pakistan is multi-faceted and diverse; while hashish does not feature uniformly across cultures of traditional shrines, hashish-smoking is a visible, communal, and conspicuous activity associated with Qalandari shrines in Pakistan. Paradoxically, it is also one of the least studied phenomena as meaningful in terms of Islam; despite its prominence in Islamic settings, it is frequently dismissed as merely illegal and representative of the degeneration of Islamic ideals....

I ask myself, have we, as academics, failed, and that too, quite miserably? I feel like confessing and saying yes, we have indeed failed. Or, we can possibly console ourselves that only a minuscule fringe of former students have indulged in moral policing on social media, expressing extreme intolerance, hurling the filthiest of abuses against some former students, while some of them even threatened to lynch and kill the alleged 'wrongdoers'....

Zakat, a pillar of Islam, mandates that Muslims give 2.5 percent of our wealth to those in need. Fuelled by this, Muslim Americans donate consistently and generously to philanthropy. Ramadan is prime time for Muslim American fund-raising efforts, and it is common for Muslim non-profit organizations and mosques to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to alleviate humanitarian crises in places like Syria, Yemen and Somalia....

An elderly person of her family to whom she related her comfortable Sunnah of Hijrat, reminded her of the “ordeal” of the Apostle, and his only companion during his Hijrat to Madinah, travelling ten times the distance in the desert on foot, escaping the city with their lives in the dead of the night. He referred her to Chapters 9 & 17 of Quran.

- In a small gathering of friends to welcome back a hajji couple, a Sunnah was enacted by a priestly looking person who was offered the customary sip of Zamzam. He stood up, turned in the direction of Qiblah and gulped the water down, announcing that, that was the established Sunnah of Rasool. Other drinks, he said, the Rasool drank sitting down and not facing the Qiblah.....

Most Muslims that I know do not decorate their houses and yards for Eid. This might be because they don’t want to seem like oddballs who have lights up for no apparent reason in the middle of June. It might be because they are afraid of drawing attention to themselves due to the rising number of hate crimes against Muslims....

Eid is a day of peace. When the Muslim establishes peace within his heart by obeying the laws of Allah and leading a disciplinary life, he has certainly concluded a most inviolable treaty of peace with Allah. Once a person is at peace with Allah, he is at peace with himself and consequently, with the rest of the universe. So, when someone celebrates the Eid in the right manner, he is actually celebrating the conclusion of a peace treaty between himself and Allah....

Darul Qazas or Sharia Courts: Why both must be Opposed?
Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

It must be underlined though that equating this with something like a Sharia court is clearly a misnomer. Courts have the ‘power’ to adjudicate over issues; the Darul-Qaza will have no such power and as such will be more like arbitration councils. To be fair to the AIMPLB, such quasi-judicial bodies do exist in other communities, such as the Khap Panchayats in Western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. In some tribal areas, these bodies even have legal recognition. Thus, the establishment of Darul Qaza may well within be the ambit of law. Demanding for a ban on Darul Qazas while remaining silent on Khaps is clearly hypocritical. It should also be understood that Darul Qazas have been functioning in this country since at least 1972....

Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan is a ritual Muslims look forward to and enjoy every year. It is the month where we seek our souls for the ultimate spirituality and connection with God through different methods, including exercising as a way of taking care of our health and fitness.....

The moon-sighting debate reflects wider divides in Islam. Different ideologies jostle for control, with Western modernists pushing for change against Saudi Arabia’s staunch traditionalism. Younger Muslims may be taking matters into their own hands: Google searches for “moon sighting” spike before each Eid. But as long as Islam remains decentralised and the Koran ambiguous, it is unlikely that Muslims will ever agree....

But let’s not digress from the spiritual and meditative aspects of this holy festival that spans 29-30 days, ending with the joyous sighting of the iconic sliver of the moon that would signify Eid ul-Fitr. The purpose of the month itself is to mainly inculcate three things among believers, “the spirit of God-fearing, the spirit of thanksgiving and the spirit of patience,”...

Quran also condemns corruption and those who practice it and enjoins on Muslims not to indulge in corruption. Quran asks Muslims not to take away the property of the orphans or weak people and not to substitute mean quality ingredients for good ones and not to devour things meant for the orphans and the poor. Quran also discourages hording of wealth and good depriving the people of their share in it. “To orphans restore their property (When they reach their age), nor substitute (your) worthless things for (their) good ones; and devour not their substance (by mixing it up) with your own. For this is indeed a great sin”.(Al Nisa: 2) “Those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, eat up a Fire into their own bodies” Al Nisa: 10)...

Performing a religious obligation is up to you and it is something between you and Allah. However, good ethics is something between you and other people. In other words, if we do not put Islamic ethics into action and practice, corruption will become rampant and disgrace will be our future. We should not judge a person based on how he performs religious obligations for he might be a hypocrite....
