Dangerous Emotions, Liberating Spirituality
Tariq Ramadan

Distancing ourselves from our selves whilst at the same time striving to achieve deep insight is, therefore associated with elevating consciousness above the physical dimension of the elements with a view to understanding their metaphysical meaning and their inscription within the cosmos....

Homes Are Peaceful Abode for Muslims
Sheikh M. Salih Al-Munajjid

If you think about those who are homeless, who live in shelters, or on the streets, or as refugees scattered in temporary camps, then you will realize the blessings of having a home. If you listen to a distressed homeless person saying, “I have nowhere to settle, no fixed place to stay. Sometimes I sleep in others’ house, sometimes in a café or park or on the sea-front, and I keep my clothes in my car,” then you will realize the disruption that results from not having the blessing of a home....

Here is a person singing the praise of his Lord. But the Lord he praises is not the Lord of any particular race or community or religious group but Lord of all the worlds, Rabb ul-Aalameen, the source of sustenance and mercy uniformly for all mankind. The devotee invokes God in the name of His attributes....

Surviving the Vicissitudes of Life with Aplomb, the Shah Rukh Way
Shah Rukh Khan

...a dying man, gasping for breath, desperately gestured to the priest by his side for a piece of paper. With great effort, he then wrote a few words on it, handed it to the priest and passed away. The priest kept the paper in his pocket and forgot all about it until the final service. Here he suddenly recalled the dead man’s last scribble. Unfolding the paper, he told the funereal congregation that he was about to read great words of inspiration to them. The piece of paper had these words on it – “You are standing on my oxygen tube…fool.” ....

Hand of God or A Coincidence?
Nastik Durrani, New Age Islam

Belief in fate causes all the human abilities to rust, that what is written on the forehead will definitely happen someday, and that all the details of the human life have already been written in a Book. This belief destroys the mentality of the students, labourers and officers. As they believe in the fate, they do not do hard work to achieve progress. Such a belief cannot give birth to extraordinary and talented people.....

Truthfulness Is a Vast Curriculum
Salman Al-Awdah

Truthfulness in speech expresses a dignified personality, manhood, insight and generosity. No one would resort to lies unless he has a wicked nature, a wicked Nafs (self), and a weak personality. A good-natured individual denounces lie and rebukes it, which is why all of the previous revelations agreed upon the prohibition and admonition of lie. How about the Islamic preachers’ then, can you imagine them lying!....

The broad humanitarianism, the pioneer declaration of women’s rights, these and other factors of the teachings of the man of Makkah, were to me among the first obvious evidence of a practical religion so tersely and so aptly epitomized in the cryptic words of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): ‘Trust in God and tie your camel.’….

"If people are able to see something outside of themselves, they tend to do better in general, so that's not surprising," Puchalski said. "From my own clinical practice, I certainly see that if people are able to have some sense of transcendence, they often have better responses." Part of what makes this a fascinating area of study is that spirituality can take so many different forms, which means it can have diverse implications for patient care, Puchalski explained....

Making Sense of Suffering

Making Sense of Suffering
Yoginder Sikand, New Age Islam

God’s ways are mysterious, far beyond our limited human comprehension, Tina explained. Everything that happens—including her mother’s gruesome death—has a reason behind it, and, ultimately, all things happen for the best, she continued. Nothing—not even a leaf falling from a tree—happens but in accordance with God’s will. Suffering is a means that God uses to bring people back from heedlessness, and it, too, is part of God’s plan for us....

Whither Moral Courage? Asks Salman Rushdie
Salman Rushdie

It’s a vexing time for those of us who believe in the right of artists, intellectuals and ordinary, affronted citizens to push boundaries and take risks and so, at times, to change the way we see the world. There’s nothing to be done but to go on restating the importance of this kind of courage, and to try to make sure that these oppressed individuals — Ai Weiwei, the members of Pussy Riot, Hamza Kashgari — are seen for what they are: men and women standing on the front line of liberty. How to do this? Sign the petitions against their treatment, join the protests. Speak up. Every little bit counts

In India, You Are Free To Go To Your Mosques and Temples

India, like most developing countries, has a host of problems ranging from corruption and poverty to female foeticide. Fortunately though, religious intolerance is not on this list of issues that ail India.....

In the present day men are prone to become atheists when asked to subscribe to dogmatic and intolerant beliefs, and there is doubtless a craving for a religion appealing to the intelligence as well as to the sentiments of men. Whoever heard of a Muslim turning atheist? There may have been some cases, but I very much doubt it....

Love Us, Not Eat Us!
Yoginder Sikand, New Age Islam

Love Us, Not Eat Us!
Yoginder Sikand, New Age Islam

‘God has given us an amazing variety of fruits and vegetables to eat. Be content with that! Turn vegetarian!’ it was titled. The leaflet so inspired a monk in the local monastery that he made it a point to stress love and compassion for animals in every discourse he delivered, pointing out how eating animals ran counter to the very first precept of the Buddha—which is to abstain from taking the life of any living being….

The Ultimate Goal of the Spiritual Path Is Learning To Live Happily In His Will
Ananthu, T.S

While the last letters of the word ‘guidance’ are ‘dance’, my friend pointed out, the first three letters are ‘g’, ‘u’ and ‘i’. G stands for God, ‘u’ for our real Self, ‘i’ for our false self. So, living happily in His Will is like saying,” God, u and i will dance”. It means the false ‘self’ (or ‘i’) in us accepts the lead of the real Self through willingness, trust and attentiveness - which leads to love, and finally to surrender. When that happens, the two who are dancing fuse into one. Like in a good dance, the result is joy. We become happy. Incredibly happy....

Pseudo Secularism, Communalism and My Journey from Fanaticism to Secularism
Aiman Reyaz, New Age Islam

Some may wonder if pseudo-secularism is really more dangerous than communalism. The answer is- yes. This is because communalism takes a massive, outward form; something like a gigantic monster, who when wakes up from its slumber is so noisy and destructive that everyone notices it; but pseudo-secularism is like a seductress, who entices us and takes us to the wrong path. She too is a monster, but a monster in disguise; hence she is not visible quite so easily. .....

I do not know whether the devil exists, but if someone asks me about his existence I will definitely reply in the affirmative. If the devil is an incarnation of mischief, the religious leaders are definitely Satans because this is the very group that has always been doing what the devil should do in principle. To believe my words, you have to go to any place of worship, though they are wrapped in sanctity and purity. But they are Satans in the guise of human beings.......

Many people love to hear the word “sorry”. It feels good when somebody apologises. I guess, it puts one in control. However, the word also stops someone from moving on and may cause resentment and pain. It may also open up old wounds that are too deep to heal. The word separates parents from their children and good friends desert each other....

Sufism believes in the doctrine of 'Wahdat al-Wajud' or the unity of all beings and not to harbour ill will against other faiths. The famous Sufi woman Rabia Basri used to say "I am so absorbed in loving Allah that I have no time to hate Satan”. Sufism much like believes in breaking barriers created by orthodox religious taboos and seeks to directly connect with the beloved Allah or the divine. When the body, mind and spirit are aligned with God, then a direct spiritual connection takes place....

Losing My Religion for Equality…
Jimmy Carter

Women and girls have been discriminated against for too long in a twisted interpretation of the word of God. I HAVE been a practicing Christian all my life and a deacon and Bible teacher for many years. My faith is a source of strength and comfort to me, as religious beliefs are to hundreds of millions of people around the world. So my decision to sever my ties with the Southern Baptist Convention, after six decades, was painful and difficult….

Good Friday: Christ, the Suffering Servant of God

Christians all over the world do this as they trust in a God who gave his only begotten son for the redemption of man from the curse and bondage of sin. “Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our inequities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed....

Splash Your Life with Colours
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Like Holi should be colourful, not boring. When each colour is seen clearly, it is colourful. When all the colours get mixed, you end up with black. So also in life, we play different roles. Each role and emotion needs to be clearly defined. Emotional confusion creates problems. When you are a father, you have to play the part of a father. You can't be a father at office. When you mix the roles in your life, you start making mistakes. Whatever role you play in life, give yourself fully to it. Harmony in diversity makes life vibrant and more colourful.....

Say ‘No’ To Religion, and Say ‘Yes’ To Spirituality
Aruna Jethwani

Spiritually speaking, the Prophets Jesus, Mohammad, Guru Nanak and Buddha were Messengers of Peace. But religion is a culture of self-identity; instead of uniting it has led to wars between self-proclaimed sects of the same religion or between the followers of different faiths. Regions across the world bear sufficient witness to this....

God’s Eternal Love
Father Dominic Emmanuel

God’s Eternal Love
Father Dominic Emmanuel

God’s love is certainly a transforming force. And because we ourselves are not used to loving people unconditionally, we find it hard both to imagine and indeed to experience that God can and does love us without expecting anything in return, totally unconditionally and freely!....

What Two Friends Can Do: How Abdul & Kishen Transformed Rajpur
Yoginder Sikand, New Age Islam

Some village elders were aghast with the clean-up drive—it wasn’t, they said, something that ‘respectable’ people did—but Abdul and Kishen and their team of volunteers carried on nonetheless. “‘The earth is God’s creation,” they answered their critics, “and if we don’t take care of it—of the little bit of it that we inhabit—and, instead, go about damaging and dirtying it, God definitely won’t be pleased. We’ll have a lot to answer for.”...

Sufi Movement Inspired Bhakti Movement In India
Dr Mahmood Islahi, New Age Islam

The Bhakti philosophy gave birth to many folk religions in India. But this Bhakti movement did not originate in space isolated in time. Nor did the philosophy dawned on the Bhakti leaders at once as a revelation but it has its roots in the Sufi movement which immediately preceded it. Bhakti movement was a spiritual movement among the Hindus as Sufism was a spiritual movement among the Muslims in the preceding century.
