The traditional rendition is patriarchic. It accords men a higher degree of right or advantage over women. If we are living a hundred years or more ago, no one would question this at all – as women were then subjected to a far greater measure of male domination outside of Islamic world than within it - as discussed under the review of 4:34 above. Today, the Qur’anic universal notion gender equitability (4:1, 4:32, 9:71) pervades the global human society, except in the Islamic world. -- Muhammad Yunus (Translation from English by Samiur Rahman, NewAgeIslam.com)

…. if the present day Hindus are identified with the ‘mushrikin’ in the listed and many other verses, the hypocrites among today’s Muslims - and surely there will be plenty among them, will be no different from the ‘mushrikin’ in spiritual perversion, and in earning God’s wrath and punishment. Are the Muslim ulema willing to accept such a proposition? If the answer is no, then a difference has to be made between those referred as ‘mushrikin’ in the Qur’an and the today’s Hindus. -- Muhammad Yunus, NewAgeIslam.com (Translated from English by Samiur Rahman, NewAgeIslam.com)

In the subsequent fighting between the Taliban and the Northern Alliance, Al Qaeda and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) helped the Taliban while a triumvirate consisting of India, Russia and Iran supported the Northern Alliance. The success of Al Qaeda in having Masood assassinated through an Arab suicide bomber a day before the 9/11 terrorist strikes in the US Homeland could not dent the fighting capability of the Northern Alliance, which paved the way for the victory of the US forces, which defeated the Taliban and captured power in Afghanistan after freeing the country from the control of the Taliban.Subsequently under pressure from Gen. Pervez Musharraf, who viewed the Northern Alliance as a pro-India and anti-Pakistan group, the Alliance and its leaders found themselves marginalised in the new dispensation in Kabul—with the blessings of the US. -- B. RAMAN

The Arabic word mushrik in Islamic theology means 'one who associates a worldly object with Divine power'. If the Hindus are mushrik in this sense, so are we, the majority of Muslims in the subcontinent. They associate with God Almighty numerous idols put on pedestals and we, numerous saints of antiquity buried in their graves. They worship God through the medium of images seen as sublime symbols, we petition dead saints to intercede with God to grant us earthly and heavenly favours. If one way is shirk, so is the other. If despite all this Islam remains a "monotheistic" faith, so does Hinduism. --Tahir Mahmood (Translated from English by Samiur Rahman, NewAgeIslam.com)

The holy Quran also comes down heavily on those who misinterpret the teachings of Islam to justify the killings of innocent non-combatant non-Muslims including old men, children and women to further the political ambitions of a coterie of misguided Muslims. They unleash bloodshed and mayhem and think that they are reformers purifying the world of sins and sinners. See what the Quran says about these men: And when it is said to them: "Make not mischief on the earth," they say: "We are only peacemakers." (Al Baqra: 11) And so advises this misguided lot in the following words: "Eat and drink of that which Allah has provided and do not act corruptly, making mischief on the earth."(Al Baqra: 60) --Jahangir Alam Qasmi (Translated from English by-Samiur Rahman, NewAgeIslam.com)

The Quran reminds man time and again that the master and the creator of the universe is God. He is omnipotent and all powerful. He has no rival or colleague. His knowledge covers everything. He knows each and every particle in the universe and the universe is illuminated with his light. He created the universe for man and illuminated the sun and the moon, spread the greenery on the earth, grew countless bounties for man and gave him supremacy over all the creatures on earth so that he can use them for his own benefit. He created rivers and streams for him and hid gems in them. The Quran expects man to think over all this and seek spiritual proximity to God. --Sohail Arshad, NewAgeIslam.com

This is the worst time for Ummah. They are being humiliated everywhere. Muslim society has once again returned back to the same cultural disorder and evils which were prevalent during the age of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had dedicated his life to erase these very evils and disorders from the face of the society. Sulah e Hudibiya (Agreement of Hudibiya) is a rarest of the rare examples for them who accuse Islam of being spread under the shadow of sword and for them who prefer war to agreement. When Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was going to Medina after Hudaibiya, Surah ‘Fatah’ was descended and God the Almighty declared “Agreement of Hudaibiya” as a ‘land sliding victory’. In fact all the Islamic wars were fought to get rid of cultural and social evils. These wars were fought to establish peace. Had it not been so there would have been nothing but blood in the streets of Mecca for the revenge of all the torture and humiliations inflicted on Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and Saha’aba Keram (rta).--  Perwez Suhaib Ahmad (Translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi NewAgeIslam.com)

Religious freedom is very fundamental to the Quran and no genuine faith (imaan) is possible without genuine freedom of conscience. Today we hardly find religious freedom in Islamic world and it is one of the causes of our stagnation. The moment one exercises such freedom one attracts Fatwa of kufr. Our great institutions of Islamic learning like al-Azhar of which one can just be proud suffer from the same problem. When one of its great scholars Abu Zaid Nasir tried to understand tanzil and tawil (revelation and understanding revelation by human beings) he was immediately declared kafir and even his marriage was declared invalid and he had to flee from Egypt.--Asghar Ali Engineer (Translated from English by Samiur Rahman, NewAgeIslam.com)

Zakir Naik is the only person I know of who has publicly refused to condemn Osama Bin Laden. His large following can be attributed to the naivety and extreme foolishness of the ordinary human being. The sections of the society responsible for tolerating, and in certain cases encouraging such behaviour, have played their part in darkening the cloud of religious fundamentalism that stands in the way of reason and enlightened discourse in public life. The fact that his arguments find favour with a vast majority of people in this age of reason is terribly unfortunate, and may well have disastrous consequences. For all one knows, by the time one realizes the magnitude of this faux pas, another 10 savages may well have set sail in a dinghy on a mission to ravage the civilized world. Denouncing Naik, then, would of course be too late. --The Sojourner (Translated from English by Samiur Rahman, NewAgeIslam.com) (Photo :Zakir Naik)

IS ISLAM inherently violent? Are Muslims in India and the world over condemned by their faith to remain steeped in illiteracy, intolerance and radicalism? Or can they meet the modern world, the world of democracy, women’s rights and multiculturalism, on its own terms? That is because it is such bellicosity and bigotry that give rise to Islamophobia, which in turn leads to discrimination and attacks on Muslims in India and worldwide, creates a sense of victimisation in the community and builds the grounds on which “Muslim leaders” and “Muslim sympathetic parties” can ply their trade. --Saif Shahin (Translated from English by Samiur Rahman, NewAgeIslam.com)

The following response to the recently held so-called Islam Awakening Conference in Tehran in an Indian Urdu newspaper editorial shows the unquestioning manner in which Muslim intelligentsia, if the journalists running Urdu newspapers can be described as such, are willing to treat anything done in the name of Islam. Someone has to merely target America and the West and invoke the name of Islam to get their overwhelming support. The following editorial in India’s largest circulated Urdu newspaper, Rashtriya Sahara, is a prime example of this phenomenon. No questions are asked in this editorial, for instance, if Iran can be legitimately called an Islamic state. How many of Indian Urdu journalists would want to live under the repressive Mullah regime that is running Iran. They do not tire abusing India’s democratic government or the West day in and day out, without realising ever and certainly never mentioning, even if they do realise it in their saner moments, that there is no so-called Islamic government anywhere in the world, whether Sunni or Shia, where they can do the same. Indeed, they couldn’t even run a newspaper itself. Not to speak of publishing independent newspapers abusing the rulers, you cannot go to Saudi Arabia, for instance, even with a copy of the Holy Quran with a translation that has not been specifically approved by the Saudi kingdom’s high priests. This is not at all to justify American or Western actions in Libya or Iraq or elsewhere. Their foreign policy, of course, leaves much to be desired, as pages of New Age Islam keep documenting everyday. But one wishes educated Muslims were a little self-critical and introspective too. This would bring a much-needed balance in their approach and encourage the community too to be more level-headed. Islam teaches us balance. Extremism of any kind is anathema to it. We are taught not to become extremists even in the matter of saying prayers. Let us always try to look within while criticising others. – Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

Western media has systematically created image of Islam as a violent religion which requires believers to fight non-believers and quote some verses out of context to prove their point. In India too the rightwing Hindutva forces do the same. They project Islam as if there is no emphasis in Islam on values and morals and as if Islam is religion of bloodthirsty monsters. They put forward their best foot based on normative humanitarianism and then compare it with what a few extremist Muslims whom west itself had misused for their own interests and conclude that Islam is far from being humane. Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) was quite contemplative in nature, came from a poor family of Hashimites which was highly respected. The Prophet was an orphan and hence knew the woes of poor and exploited and had deep sympathy with the oppressed of the society. He used to retire to a cave known as Hira outside the town of Mecca. It was in this cave that he received his first revelation. --Asghar Ali Engineer (Translated from English by Samiur Rahman, NewAgeIslam.com)

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “La Ilaha Illallah”. Hearing this, all members of the delegation got furious. Abu Ta’alib said, O’ my nephew; tell some other words (Kalima) as by hearing this Kalima people of your tribe get disturbed and worried. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, my dear uncle I cannot say any other Kalima even if they give me the wealth of the whole world.  This made them all the more irritated. They said they will also make fun of his God. It was here that this Ayat no. 108 of Sura al Enam was revealed “And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides Allah, lest they insult Allah wrongfully without knowledge.” This presents a brilliant example of patience and tolerance. On various occasions idols have been described in harsh language, such as, “these idols and their worshippers both are weak“ and “You and the idols you worship are the fuel of hell”. So what is the meaning of tolerance if idols are called evil in these Ayats. This has been answered in Rooh ul Ma’ani in detail. These Ayats do not talk of castigating the gods (idols); rather, it says, evil begets evil. So it does not go against the values of tolerance. -- Sahafat (Mumbai) (Translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi, NewAgeIslam.com)

First proposal of the Declaration is based on the importance of “Unflinching Faith” on the Islamic Shariah. It wishes Islamic world to provide ways and means of teaching Deen and Shariah to the younger generation. It requests Muslim governments and its masses to be committed to bring Shariah in their lives. It asks to understand the moderate means of Islam and to act accordingly. This proposal addresses the government and the people asks to strive to solve the problems being faced by the Islamic world and to try to safeguard the lives and properties of the Muslim brethren at all cost. One of the most important and major points of this Declaration is to formulate such rules and regulations which is a declaration of rights and duties of Muslim governments, rulers and common masses in the light of Islamic Shariah and Deen. It must also be clarifying the rights of Muslim minorities and their relationship with the people of other religions. It also has to highlight as to how the work of Dawah, and such other works should be done with mutual understanding among all the Islamic organisations and groups.  The fact remains that in the present circumstances it is a very difficult job to keep all the organisations and groups united on the world level. May this voice arising from the shadows of the walsl of Khana e Ka’aba awaken the Muslims all over the world and be effective in solving their problems.  “W Billahil Taufeeque” -- Maulana Khalid Saufullah Rahmani (Translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi,

Mufti Aazam Ali Juma a great scholar of Egypt says, “If the people offering prayer wish they can offer their prayer under the Imamat of a woman. Shaikh Ali Juma said “Although there is no unanimity on the Imamat of women among ‘Fuquha’ (knowers of Islamic jurisprudence) there is a space for the woman to be appointed an Imam. He told Al-Arabia TV that according to Imam Tibrani and Imam al Arabi, leadership of a woman in prayer is right. On the other side, Egyptian scholar and philosopher Dr. Yusuf al Quarzawi has criticised it saying it is against the principles of Islamic teachings. According to him, it is against Islam and it is refusal of the orders of Allah. According to me, consciously or unconsciously, religion has completed a journey where a woman’s role has been socially, politically and religiously accepted. If a Muslim woman can become an MP, participate in co education, TV programmes with their male counterparts, deliver speeches among the men, become an Editor , in a Shariah coded dresses according to self made Ulema, why can they not lead prayers. Right use of wisdom is Imaan and not using ones intellect or its wrong use is “Kufr”.-- Asad Mufti

Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani

As Maulana Usmai’s and other many scholar’s papers had described the ‘obedience of Ameer’ and evidences from “Atiullah w Ati ur Rasool w Ulal Amr” were noted down, Maulana Syed Suleman Husaini Nadwi spoke on the point and said ‘God has ordered to “obey the Ameers among you”, it means Muslims have been ordered to obey those government heads who are Muslims. But at present almost all the government heads of Islamic nations have got out of the boundaries of Islam. They are ‘deniers’ of Islamic Shariah. They implement restrictions on Muslim women and are agents of the enemies of Islam and are not Muslims representatives. How can such people be obeyed?’ Abdullah Moru’s address and Maulana Nadwi’s point was supported in a way as if it was the voice of the majority of the people there. -- Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani (Translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi, NewAgeIslam.com)
