If we think and reflect, the exalted Prophet Muhammad is beyond reproach, insults or denigration. Allah has given him the highest certificate: RAHMATILLIL’AALAMIN (Grace for all people, nations and all creation). Can any human being throw a blot on a Divine Certificate? Can anyone blacken a shining sun? SUNNAH: Some Mullahs maintain that the Prophet (S) forgave people for all their assaults, but it was his attitude. How can we bear any insults hurled upon him? But, how do they forget the noble SUNNAH (example) of the exalted Prophet? -- Dr. Shabbir Ahmed (Translated from English by Md Zafar Iqbal, NewAgeIslam.com)

There are several instances in the Prophet’s (PBUH) life, which show that he pardoned the foul language of even his sworn enemies. For instance, when a Jew, who was opposed to the reform movement of Islam, greeted him by saying “As-saamu-alalikum” (death be upon you) and the Prophet’s (PBUH) wife Hazrat Aisha responded with “As-saamu ‘alaikum wal-laa’na”(death and Allah’s curse be upon you too), he expressed his strong displeasure by saying, “Be gentle and calm, Aisha.” And when one of his companions sought permission to harm the Jew, the Prophet (PBUH) silenced him with an emphatic “No” (Sahih Bukhari). According to another tradition, a man demanded his debts from the Prophet (PBUH) in such a rude manner that his companions wanted to beat him up. But the Prophet (PBUH) said, “Leave him, for he (the creditor) has the right to demand it (harshly)” (Sahih Bukhari). Furthermore, the Prophet (PBUH) warned Muslims by saying, “Eeyakum wal ghulu fiddeen. Fa innahu ahlaka man kaana qablakum al ghulu fiddeen (Ibne Maaja). -- A Faizur Rahman  (Translated By: Md Zafar Iqbal, NewAgeIslam.com)

One of the few Islamic scholars to have openly denounced the killing of Taseer and to have condemned Pakistan’s blasphemy law is the New Delhi-based Maulana Wahiduddin Khan. Khan has written widely on the issue of blasphemy. One of his earliest essays on the subject appeared in 1986, which was later included in a volume that was published in 1997 under the title Shatm-e Rasul ka Masla Quran wa Hadith aur Fiqh wa Tarikh ki Roshni Mai (‘The Question of Blasphemy Against the Prophet in the Light of the Quran, Hadith, Fiqh and History’). This essay, centred on a case of perceived insult to the Prophet Muhammad and the violent Muslim response to it, bears immediate relevance to the issues being hotly debated today with regard to the anti-blasphemy law in Pakistan. Khan penned this essay when a massive Muslim mob stormed the office of the Bangalore-based daily Deccan Herald after it published a story provocatively titled ‘Mohammad, the Idiot’. Although the story was not about the Prophet Mohammad himself, enraged Muslims took it to be an insult to him.-- Yoginder Sikand, NewAgeIslam.com (Urdu Translation by: Md. Zafar Iqbal, NewAgeIslam.com)

Civilisations are like waves – always in movement: coming from Africa or the old Iraq, to Greece and from there to the Middle East. There was the Hellenistic period, when Alexander the Great tried to spread his rule through the entire region. Then came the Islamic civilisation. And finally the Renaissance and the modern Western civilisation. This type of exchange, which emphasises the importance of dialogue between the civilisations and religions, began in the 7th century. They see Islam as fixed, unchanging, which just is not the case. There is a change underway in the Muslim world, a reformation. It began at the end of the 19th century and continued through the 20th. It has gone through highs and lows. -- Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid in an interview to Erhard Brunn (Translated from English by: Md.Zafar Iqbal, NewAgeIslam.com)

Whatever one might think of Governor Salman Taseer's politics, he was killed this Wednesday for what was certainly the best act of his life: trying to save the life of an illiterate, poor, peasant Christian woman.  But rose petals are being showered upon his murderer. He is being called a ghazi, lawyers are demonstrating spontaneously for his release, clerics refused to perform his funeral rites. Most shockingly, the interior minister - his political colleague and the ultimate coward - has said that he too would kill a blasphemer with his own hands.  Pakistan once had a violent, rabidly religious lunatic fringe. This fringe has morphed into a majority. The liberals are now the fringe. We are now a nation of butchers and primitive savages. Europe's Dark Ages have descended upon us. – Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy (Urdu Translation by Md Sadique Hussain, NewAgeIslam.com)

There’s nothing a practising Muslim ever does without the invocation: “Bismillah ar-Rahman-ur-Rahim” (In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful). About Prophet Mohammed he will tell you that Allah sent him to earth as “Rahmat-ul-Alemeen” (mercy on all mankind). The very word Islam means peace, you will be told. Allah, Prophet Mohammed, Islam is all about peace, compassion, mercy. Get it? No doubt Mumtaz Qadri, the assassin of Pakistan Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, believes himself to be a pious Muslim. No doubt “Bismillah ar-Rahman-ur-Rahim” preceded the bullets he pumped into a person he was trained, paid and sworn to protect, risking his life if need be. -- Javed Anand (Urdu Translation by Md Zafar Iqbal, NewAgeIslam.com)

[New Age Islam is posting an English translation of an article (along with the original) by a Pakistan aalim Maulana Mohammad Azhar who opposes the ban on Bible demanded by other Mullas. He says there is no such precedent in Islamic history and so it is needless despite the provocations in the Bible. Such a demand was not made even in the times of the Prophet or his companions or their descendents, he points out. He is also afraid of the reaction of the world Christian community that may lead to banning of the publication of the holy Quran in those countries which will hamper the work of Dawah. – Editor]

Christians’ and Jews’ centuries-old hostility for Islam is well known. According to Quran, the present age is the age “when they have a great deal of hatred and jealousy in their heart and will always speak against Islam”. This animosity has come in front of us in the form of blasphemy against Allah and Prophet (PBUH). In comparison to them Muslims take blasphemy against Jesus Christ and Moses as a ‘Kufr’ (disbelief in Islam). This way the Muslims take the denigration of prophets in the Bible as blasphemy. They know the Bible contains deviations; even then they respect it and do not bear its denigration. -- Maulana Mohammad Azhar  (Translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi, NewAgeIslam.com)

We are compelled to see our near and dear ones being used as suicide bombers.  We have not forgotten the time when two Islamic countries used to exploit innocent children and youngsters as suicide bombers with a promise of an eternal life in heaven in return. The flag of Jihad is being hoisted even when there is no war between Islam and Kufr today. In this one- sided war against the military power these Jihadis are seeking to enter heaven killing their own people!  Various organization like Al Qaeda, Taliban, Jama’t ud-Dawa, Lashkar-e- Jhangwi, Sipah e Sahaba, Tahreek jafria, Pakistan, Tahreek e Nefad e Shariat Muhammadi, Sunni Tahreek and Sipah e Muhammad, Pakistan, are responsible for these killings. These are one and the same organization being run on different letter pads. -- Suhail Anjum (Translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi, NewAgeIslam.com)

It [Urdu Daily Sahafat, Delhi] also regularly publishes analyses by someone named Ayaz Mahmud, who would be amusing if he were not so recklessly irresponsible and vicious.  Following is what appeared in the Delhi edition of Sahafat on May 29, 2011. In this column Mr Mahmud informs the readers of Sahafat:

1. Western media daily invents new terrorists, complete with pictures and genealogies.

2. It is a part of the Western nations' "Qadiani MIssion," for which they falsely put blame upon Al-Qa'ida, Taliban, and Lashkar-i-Taiba.

3. Osama bin Laden was the secret commander-in-chief of the Qadianis and was recently killed in secret in a fake operation in Pakistan.

4. Their next target can be Nawaz Sharif, for he initiated a rapprochement with India.

5. In this conspiracy, people get their faces altered, then films are made showing them in fake actions. These films are first broadcast on Al-Jazeera channels, and then by the Western media.

6. The United States is dead set against any rapprochement between India and Pakistan, and will stop it at any cost.

7. The unnatural deaths of Z. A. Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Ziaul Haq and removal of Pervez Musharraf were all orchestrated by the United States and its supporters in Pakistan.

His previous columns have also made egregious attacks on Ahmadi Muslims, though this is the first time for him to claim that OBL was a "Qadiani" army commander. Mr Mahmud should have the right to indulge in these fantasies but that he does so under the patronage of an otherwise rather sensible newspaper is disturbing. And his obscene attacks on the Ahmadis are criminal and should be looked into by responsible journalists and their professional organizations. -- C. M. Naim

Instead of America and the Arab world making that report their joint post-bin Laden agenda, they ignored it. Washington basically gave the Arab dictators a free pass to tighten their vise grip on their people -- as long as these Arab leaders arrested, interrogated and held the Islamist militants in their societies and eliminated them as a threat to us. As the Arab leaders choked their people that much tighter, along came Facebook, Twitter and cell phone cameras, which enabled those people to share grievances, organize rebellions, lose their fear and expose their leaders. That's the good news. The challenging news is that because of the bin Laden decade, these newly liberated Arab states are in an even deeper hole in terms of economic development, population growth and education. -- Thomas L. Friedman

There are various groups of warriors, call Jihadist warriors, in Pakistan. Army and ISI take some of them as their allies, specially the groups which are active in Kashmir and Afghanistan. These groups are not a headache for them. But, the military has to take action, though unwillingly, against Tahreek e Taleban and other such groups which are active in the country as suicide bombers (fidayeen). My plea is that terrorism of every kind is evil. Using it as a policy for achieving strategic objectives is dangerous. This will have to be abandoned. -- Syed Mansoor Agha (Excerpts translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi, NewAgeIslam.com)

Well-known Pakistani columnist Hamid Mir writes a touching story of Fazal Badi who has finally left Pakistan to join his doctor son in Malaysia. He could not continue living there after the recent suicide attack on the holy night of Shab-e-Qadr in which two sons of a poor mother he had been supporting financially for their education, one now a soldier and another a driver, died together in the continuing reprisal attacks by Taliban following the killing of Osama bin Laden.  In his letter to the columnist Badi analyses the situation in Pakistan and says: “The enemy (the US) has filled us with so much hatred against one another that we are killing each other indiscriminately.”

This website has no desire to defend the US foreign policies. In any case these are too complex issues to be just declared right or wrong, good or bad. But what struck us at New Age Islam was that this summation of this heart-rending Pakistani tale by a common Pakistani. It brings out the crux of the problem not only Pakistan but the entire Muslim community faces: sadistic enjoyment of victimhood. We are a persecuted community and we wish to permanently remain so. Common sense seems so uncommon among us that we can’t see what must be obvious to everyone else. Muslims are killing Muslims everywhere. They have been doing so virtually since the demise of the prophet. Three of the first four rightly-guided caliphs, heirs to the Prophet’s legacy, got killed. But it is the enemy (either the Americans or Zionsists or Hindus) to blame for everything. Hadi says that the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are not enemies; it is only America that is the enemy. He writes to Hamid Mir before leaving Pakistan as the columnist had predicted 10 years ago at the beginning of the War on Terror that America will deceive Pakistan again.

We hope that the anguish of one common Pakistani today will also lead to some introspection. Who knows, in the depths of their despair, Pakistanis might start looking within and thus recognising the real enemy too. – Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

“… Osama does not need any badge of “martyrdom” from us, the shameless, coward, feeble and glutton dwarfs. If he (Osama) under weighs in the balance of Allah, he will be punished. If his deeds are accepted in the court of Allah, the Most High, it does not matter at all whether the fish of the Ocean or the beasts of the forest would eat his corpse; he would be sitting on a golden throne in the company of martyrs.

If the World Emperor does not mind, and our rulers prostrating before it do not get angry, come, let us raise our hands in prayer for Osama. May God forgive his mistakes and failings, favour him with his endless pardon and mercy, and bestow upon him the status of his special slaves.” – Pakistani columnist Irfan Siddiqi, quoted by Indian journalist Suhail Anjum in Roznama Sahafat, Delhi.

Translated from Urdu by Md. Sadique Hussain, NewAgeIslam.com

Practically speaking Osama’s terrorism proved advantageous to America and brought disrespect and dishonor to Islam and Muslims. Three thousand people were killed in twin tower attack and, according to Pakistan Prime Minister 30,000 people have lost their lives in Pakistan alone following 9/11. In Iraq according to America 3 lakh and as per other analysis at least 10 lakh people have been killed.  America has established its army bases all over the Islamic world except Iran, Lebanon and Syria since 9/11. It means after 9/11 if Muslims got anything it was “Death” and that also either in blasts or by American bombs and missiles. -- Zafar Agha

I have in my focus three distinct dramas being played out. From North Africa – Tunis, Egypt – to Jordan and Syria is one theatre. This is the arena of positive evolution. Then there is the GCC theatre. Saudi Arabia is the spider in this web, its tentacles deep in Bahrain and Yemen, two countries it shares border with. The third is something of a solo number with Muammar Gaddafi dancing between minefields being inexpertly laid by an Anglo-French pair of plotters. The Americans, having had their fingers burnt in Iraq, are clearly keen not to be seen conferring martyrdom on another Arab despot. In an excellent interview with a journalist who specialises in Africa, Fareed Zakaria conclusively established Gaddafi’s immense popularity with sub Saharan Africa where people are collecting donations to help Gaddafi. -- Saeed Naqvi

On numerous occasions blasphemous acts have been performed and toughest possible actions have been taken by Muslims in all such cases. … Everybody knows, these kinds of activities are not forgiven by the followers of Islam and the blasphemers are either killed or the followers of Rasool (SAW) sacrifice their lives for maintaining the Prophet’s dignity. Even after so many incidents of such nature if somebody does the same thing, it will not be taken as a mistake committed unconsciously. These things are consciously done to fire up the passions of the followers of Prophet (SAW). -- A report in Hindustan Express, New Delhi (Translated from Urdu by New Age Islam Edit Desk)

Radical Islamists using “blasphemy” to manipulate Muslim masses: Sultan Shahin tells UNHRC

Madame President,

... Muslims in Pakistan and elsewhere have to understand that the radical Islamists world over make use of emotive issues that would capture the imagination of Muslim masses and make them react irrationally, unthinkingly. In order to capture the minds of the Muslim masses, fanatical Mullahs are raising sensitive issues like those of members of other religious communities insulting Prophet Mohammad or the Holy Book, the Quran. The issue of blasphemy has been raised to such a high pitch, particularly in Pakistan, but also in other countries that the masses of Muslims are just not allowed to see reason. ... Mullahs are telling them in televised addresses that the Quran asks them not only to kill the blasphemers but also to kill them with relish. They present the picture of an extremely sadistic God and His prophet who relish torturing and killing and ask their followers to do so too. ...The result is a sort of free for all in the society. Any thinking Muslim can be a target. -- Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam, addressing the United Nations Human Rights Council’s 16th session in Geneva on 22 March 2011 in the General Debate on Follow-up and implementation of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action.

Will Sudais’s India visit engender same kind of schism in Indian Muslim society and polarize it into Shia and Sunni sects so as to crush the uprisings in Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries and to protect their dynasties? Needless to say, Iran is playing hatemonger against Sunni Muslims in the region and the present Shia government of Iraq is following suit. This is not a good sign for maintaining stability, peace and tranquility in the Muslim world in general and in the region in particular. The fact of the matter is that Asrhad Madani has lost his support-base and gone into oblivion after the Jamiat was bifurcated between him and his nephew Mahmood Madani. -- Mohammad Akram Nawaz, NewAgeIslam.com

Indeed a prominent ex-militant Kashmiri leader told me just after Zuhr prayers in the Shah Faisal mosque in Islamabad that the first person to attack the Babri masjid on December 6, 1992, was a Jihadist from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK) who had joined the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) some time ago and was part of Mr. L. K. Advani’s rally along with several of his co-religionists. My informant was also a Jihadist once, but perhaps not completely devoid of the milk of human kindness and thus not a true Jihadist. He retained affections for his wife and kids stranded in the valley and his Hindu and Muslim classmates in Delhi where he had studied up to graduation. He was clearly not happy with the vision of an impending holocaust in India and tried to warn me. – Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

Now the story of Raymond Davis is no secret. It was nothing but day dreaming of a new patriotic awakening in Pakistan. People were wondering how to end America’s growing attitude of a master. It was to make America understand that even if it is united and strong it is just a country like Pakistan with a sovereign identity. Thus both the countries have similar status in their relationship. America often crosses its limit in its of power arrogance which the Pakistanis do not like. It has become imperative that Pakistanis made America understand this. None of the governments paid attention to the self respect of the country as Late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto used to. Pakistanis were unable to bear the sovereignty of Americans in their country and the powers they yielded. Americans roaming around the city, its roads and by lanes had started crossing its diplomatic limits. -- By Nazeer Naji (Translated from Urdu by Arman Neyazi, NewAgeIslam.com)

Demolish Kafir/ Mushrik/ Munafiq-manufacturing factories, says Sultan Shahin, defending New Age Islam against Talibani onslaught

….As a community we are more reactionary and obscurantist than positive and progressive. We live in fear and denial. There is nothing wrong with us Muslims; it’s all the result of Jewish conspiracy, Hindu conspiracy, Western imperialist conspiracy, etc. etc. We love living in the past, in the land of pointlessness. So our discussions too are not so much about issues of today as about the bygone past. We revel in discussing ad infinitum the dirty politics of seventh century Arabia and taking sides with one or the other party. We have no present and no plans for the future. As a community, that is. Some individuals, of course, do have plans for themselves as well as for the community and a vision of regeneration for Islam and the Muslim community. But they are reviled for thinking of this word rather than the other world where 72 houris are waiting for them in a land of milk and honey and of course, plenty of liquor. (In the case of poor women, of course, only their husbands, if any, would be waiting there, and yet some of them become suicide bombers, for some reason.) – Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

Editor, NewAgeIslam.com, Sultan Shahin's oral statement to the Thirteenth session of UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on 16 March, 2010:

I would like to confine myself to reflecting on the problems of religious minorities, particularly Muslim minorities who are facing xenophobia and related forms of intolerance today in an atmosphere of widespread Islamophobia. We Muslims are also complaining of an attempt to encourage Islamophobia. The French ban on veils and Swiss ban on minarets has further vitiated the atmosphere. We do not know for sure how much of this is deliberate as a sort of anti-Islam crusade as we Muslims allege and how much is a paranoid reaction to growing radicalism, extremism and exclusivism in Islamic societies.

But I find a note of introspection on the part of us Muslims and Muslim governments completely missing in the continuing debate. I intend to do precisely that today. While we Muslims demand, and rightly so, the freedom to freely practise and propagate our religion in the non-Muslim majority countries, we do not seem to worry about the plight of religious minorities living in Muslim-majority lands.

Contribution of Petrodollar Islam

That Muslim societies in general have radicalised over the last decades cannot be denied. This has been a direct result of tens of billions of petrodollars having been spent in promoting a rigid, obscurantist, desiccated version of Islam, shorn of all its beauty and bounty. Preachers of what I can only call “petrodollar Islam” have gone around the world asking Muslims to develop a separate identity that distinguishes them not only in the practice of Islamic prayer rituals but also looks and apparel. The phenomenal rise in Muslim women wearing hijab and an assortment of veils or men growing what is called an Islamic beard is no accident.

Discrimination against religious minorities in Muslim-majority countries has grown. Anti-blasphemy laws, for instance, have been routinely used to harass and commit acts of violence against religious minorities. The Report of the Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, Asma Jahangir, mentioned the case of Christians and the minority Muslim sect of Ahmadis who are continually harassed on baseless allegations of blasphemy in Pakistan despite the government’s stated commitment to fulfil its international obligations. -- Sultan Shahin

Even as the waves of democratic revolutions are surging ahead in the Arab world and the Muslim countries of the North Africa, the people speaking out against a barbaric law are being killed in Pakistan. Some time ago, the governor of Punjab Salman Taseer was riddled by bullets in broad daylight in a market in Lahore. Today, the Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti was killed in a market in the capital city of Islamabad. Salman Taseer and Shahbaz Bhatti had committed the same sin. Both were in favour of changes in the blasphemy laws of Pakistan. Both were of the opinion that death sentence under anti-blasphemy laws was a very severe punishment. A modern state demands that such a radical law should not exist in Pakistan. But it seems that there is no place for liberal minds like Salman Taseer and Shahbaz Bhatti. That’s why when the killer bodyguard of Salman Taseer was produced in the court a crowd of lawyers greeted him by showering rose petals on him. 90 lawyers of Lahore High Court signed a petition saying that they would fight his case free of cost. There was jubilation in Pakistan on the death of Shahbaz Bhatti too when he was killed in his car.  What the hell is happening in Pakistan? -– Zafar Agha (Translated from Urdu by New Age Islam Edit Desk)

Sami Qureshi further said that the representatives of local Christian and Jew community also attended the celebrations. A Jew whose son was bedridden for a long time also participated in the ceremony to pray for his son’s health. He had heard that the collective prayers made in the Maulid ceremonies are granted soon.

The entry for the participants in the spacious Music hall was free. A large number of women and children participated in the programme that started at 6 PM and continued till late in the night. Stalls had also been put up in the hall and the participants were served dinner as well. The arrangements in the ceremony were satisfactory and praiseworthy in every aspect. A large number of volunteers was seen serving and helping the guests. When I alongwith my family, brother Qazi Latif and Nur Mohammad Gujral entered the Music Hall, an enthralling atmosphere greeted us. The hosts were busy in their work at the stage. Background music was making the atmosphere all the more spiritual. The popular Naat singer, Gold Medallist Mr Noor Mohammad Gujral and Milad Raza Qadri from the UK spellbound the audience with their naat recitation. -- By Raja Muzaffar (Translated from Urdu by New Age Islam Edit Desk)

Apart from the assassination of Salman Taseer and Shahbaz Bhatti, today the spirit of secularism and the spirit of tolerance is lacking. There is left no room for constructive and serious dialogue. If someone opposes any religious group, the group instead of countering his allegations with the help of logic and arguments, replies with guns and klashnikovs. The religious elements have also made the guns their tools. Non-liberalism and intolerance is gaining ground. There is also no scope for co-existence. Humility and refraction has become a thing of the past. Extremism and aggression has gained currency. Sectarian extremism is also at its peak. There is no guarantee for the security of the procession of any sect. Now the situation has come to such a passé that the religious processions and rallies are protected with klashnikovs. -- Suhail Anjum (Translated from Urdu by New Age Islam Edit Desk)
