A wave of jubilation ran among the Muslims of Punjab on the first day of Ramadhan when thanks to the efforts of the Majlis-e-Ahrar Islam, Hind the Sikhs of the village Mallan handed over the mosque which had been closed for the last 63 years to the Shahi Imam of Punjab, Maulana Habibur Rahman Sani Ludhiyanvi in a simple ceremony. According to eye witnesses, when the caravan of the Shahi Imam of Punjab Maulana Habibur Rahman Sani Ludhianvi reached Mallan at 12.30 PM on the first day of Ramadhan, the joy of Muslims knew no bounds. The Sarpanch of the village Amar Singh handed over the mosque to the Shahi Imam. On the occasion, the Shahi Imam also felicitated the people of the Sikh community.

The first thing I would like to tell you that you have by the grace of God graduated from the madrasa but that does not mean that you have fulfilled your responsibility. The truth is that it is a mere beginning of life and it is now that you will be burdened with engagements and responsibilities. Until now, you had been under the supervision of your teachers and the safe boundary walls of madrasas were your home. You lived a life free of worries and hardships. The only work you had to do was write, read, acquire skills and develop your talent and aptitude and the only fear you had was of your handful of teachers and authorities who were obviously your well wishers. – Maulana Nadeemul Wajidi

The influence of the Naqshbandia order of Sufism became so powerful in the society of China by the 18th century that they declared a revolt against the royal family. But the ruler Kiang Lun crushed the sufi movement led by Khwaja Afrin and captured the Turkistan region of China. Later, to win the loyalty of the Muslims, he married the daughter of a sufi of the Naqshbandia order belonging to Kashghar. The king took his new queen to Beijing. The woman of the sufi household was able to have her influence on the king and maintained her faith until the king built a mosque for his queen with Quranic verses and hadiths inscribed on it......

It is said that the Jahriya sect organised many movements among the Muslims of China. These movements put the Deng royal family in constant trouble. The cause of these movements among the Chinese Muslims is said to be the issue of their religious identity. The question whether they were Chinese first or Muslims first was foremost in their minds and would perplex them continuously. -- Syed Najmi Zafar

Ramadhan: The month of blessings and promises
Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani

By Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani

The sacred month of Ramadhan has arrived with a lot of blessings and promises for the Muslims. The most important aspect of this month is fasting. The author says that fasting prepares human beings mentally and physically to sacrifice everything to seek God’s blessings. Fasting is the manifestation of the man’s resolve that he will renounce all physical pleasures and comforts for the pleasure of God. He will reign in the unbridled horse of physical pleasures because all the earthly pleasures revolve round the stomach and physical emotions. The fasting controls both. And it’s only the fear of God and the sense of liability in the hereafter that drives this resolve or control. Another important practice during the month is namaz-e- taraweeh. The holy Prophet (PBUH) offered this prayer for some days in Masjid-e-Nabwi but later stopped offering namaz-e-taraweeh in the mosque due to the thought that this might become mandatory for the ummah and if it happened, it will be a cause for the hardship for the ummah. Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, Imam Shafai and Imam Ahmad are of the opinion that namaz-e-taraweeh consists of 20 rik’ats. Moreover, since Hadhrat Umar’s period, 20 rik’ats of  taraweeh have been a routine in the Harmain Sharif. So, 20 rik’ats of taraweeh are sunnah. Some scholars are in favour of only 8 rikats of taraweeh. But we should not make it a bone of contention. We should offer the taraweeh according to our beliefs. The third important practice of this month is the recitation of the holy Quran. The revelation of the holy Quran started in this month. The month of Ramadhan is, therefore, the anniversary of the revelation of the Quran.

When Dajjal will reach Damascus, Jesus Christ will descend from the heavens on the earth to decide his fate. He will descend on the white minaret located in the eastern part of Damascus. At that particular moment, Hadhrat Mehdi will have already stood on the prayer mat to lead the prayer. Jesus Christ will offer namaz in his leadership, will chase Dajjal  till Palestine and kill him. Muslims will also kill the Jews till the last person. After this, Jesus will break the Cross which is the symbol of Christianity, slaughter the pig and invite people towards Islam. There will be no one on earth who will not come into the fold of Islam. Then Hadhrat Mehdi will pass away and Jesus Christ will rule over the Muslims. -- Maulana Nadeemul Wajidi

نزول مسیح کا عقیدہ
مولانا ندیم الواجدی

Contrary to the collective belief of the ummah, Maulana Wahiduddin Khan says that the second coming of Christ is in fact not his real coming but the coming of his role. He says that it is generally believed that Jesus Christ is alive in the heavens and will come down physically on earth in the final phase and kill Dajjal. Though this belief is widespread, it is proved neither by the Quran nor Hadith in its present form. In the books of hadith, there are two dozen reliable narrations which tell of the appearance of Christ but it is noteworthy that none of them explicitly states that Christ will descend physically from the heavens. In fact the coming of Christ means the coming of the role of Christ. In other words, when in the final years, Dajjal will appear, a member of the Muhammadi ummah will rise and playing the role akin to Christ’s, face the trials of Dajjal and finish him off. (Al Risala, May 2010, Page 46)-- Maulana Nadeemul Wajidi

Muradabad: Samana Naqvi, a student of Prabha Devi  Adarsh Kanya Inter College, Muradabad added one more feather to her cap by bagging the first prize in the Science Seminar held by the UP government’s Department of Education.

Maharashtra government’s hard stance on minority institutions

Mumbai: Welcoming the decision of the Maharashtra Government on granting admission to minority students in Mumbai according to prescribed percentage, the guardians' bodies, Muslim intellectuals and religious scholars said that the decision would put an end to the problems faced by Muslim students in getting admissions.

The term Hindu terrorism is as inappropriate and dangerous as Islamic terrorism. The media that had spread the term Islamic terrorism has now coined this term. The term is not correct in the sense that our Hindu brethren are not even militants, leave alone being terrorists. Tolerance and peaceful co-existence has been their way. Therefore, in my view, the term Hindu terrorism is a grave injustice to the Hindus. Those who have coined this term are either very naive or tricksters of the highest degree.

Secondly, the idea that the faces of terrorism which had donned the mask of Hindutva were unknown and have just been exposed is not correct. These faces were known for a long time. It’s a different matter that due to some political compulsions they were beyond the reach of the law.

You can then ask me what should we call what we call Hindu terrorism. My answer is: it is not Hindu terrorism, it’s simply ‘Sangh terrorism’ which originated in 1925 and manifested itself first in 1927. Listen to what a big leader Dattopant Thengdiji says in his speech which has been published titled ‘Hindu mansikta’ (Hindu mentality):

“A Hindu-Muslim riot had broken out in Nagpur in 1927. The Hindus gave them such a thrashing that the Mussalmans could not stand up to their feet for years. It could be possible because the Sangh came into existence and a group came up. Thanks to the group the Muslims got the beating.......Everyone knew that the akhara set up by doctorji was instrumental in all this. So it should be said boldly and loudly. But Dr Hedgewarji says that the victory achieved by the Hindus in Nagpur was thanks to the courage of the Hindu society”

This was a long speech delivered in an RSS camp in Punjab in 1990. In this speech, the mentality and the modus operandi of the RSS is evident as is in the excerpt given above. The purpose is thrashing the Muslims and then instead of owning up to the sin, calling it the courage, bravery and might of the ‘whole Hindu samaj’; mobilising people by branding this mentality as nationalism and the behaviour as patriotism. – Syed Mansoor Agha

Shab-e-Barat falls on the 15th night of the month of Shaaban. It means the night of salvation as many people are granted pardon from hell in that night. Sheikh Abdul Qadir Geelani (R.A.) has written that many unfortunate people get salvation in that night. It is such an important night when decisions are taken about one's death and life, about provisions and other issues. In view of the great significance of this night, the Muslims should spend the night in prayers and recitations of the Quran and ask for Allah's forgiveness and benevolence and should not indulge in un-Islamic practices, says Maulana Asrarul Haq Qasmi.

Like millions of her countrymen Zahida Hina is also grief-stricken and shocked at the heinous terrorist attack at the Data Darbar in Lahore. She feels that the war waged by the terrorists has entered into its final phase. Now the human beings will be beheaded more mercilessly and more frequently. The belief that Data Darbar’s shrine will not be attacked has been shattered. But now it has been realised that nothing can be more dangerous than considering oneself blessed and others doomed for hell. But the fact remains that after every attack on the shrines of sufi saints, people will come back to these centres of peace, love and humanity. Terrorists cannot hold people back, do whatever they can, she believes.

It is a fact that a part of Kashmir is occupied by Pakistan and a solution has not been reached on the Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. But a few days ago a statement of POK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider appeared in the newspapers which made us realise that the people of Pakistan-occupid-Kashmir also want peace. He meant that be it Jammu & Kashmir or Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir, not only the people but the rulers on both sides want a solution that could ensure a lasting peace. That will bring back normalcy and the people will heave a sigh of relief. As of now, the people in both parts of Kashmir are a picture of helplessness and there is no one to address their woes. In a sense, the suggestion of the Prime Minister of PoK, Raja Farooq is a positive one. He said that the affairs of Kashmir should not be attached to the Indo-Pak dialogue as of late Pakistan was embroiled in its own internal problems and was in a weak position. It clearly indicates that Raja Farooq Haider’s stance is that first of all India and Pakistan should resolve their disputes. Once the relations are restored and there is an atmosphere of mutual confidence and bonhomie, the Kashmir issue could also be resolved. His proposal has come at a time when India and Pakistan are readying for talks and Kashmir is going through turmoil. The situation could be brought back to normal acting on the proposal. But first the leaders of Kashmir have to decide not to stoke the fire in the state. – Dr Rizwan Ahmad

Kashmir is going through the same situation it went through two decades ago. The rural as well as urban areas of Kashmir are under curfew. The fiery and inflammatory speeches of Hurriyat leaders have added fuel to the fire. The stone pelting by the hired stone-pelters in the last few weeks may have pleased these elements but it pushed Kashmir back by a few years. These unemployed youth do not understand the repercussions it will have but they cannot escape the after effects. At this volatile juncture, the state and the Central government should try and win the confidence of the people and recall the army from Kashmir as soon as possible otherwise the situation will deteriorate further. Hurriyat leaders should also think why they are fomenting trouble when the situation is coming back to normal and talks are  on. – Dr Khwaja Ekram

Irfan Siddiquee is grief-stricken at the heinous attacks on the Data Darbar and says  that there are no words to describe the barbarity and bestiality perpetrated by the terrorists at the shrine. The shrine belongs to the great sufi saint Syed Ali Hijweri (R.A.) and serves as a tree providing soothing shade and shelter to the men and women who come from far and near in search of peace and solace. آنر کلنگ ،مذہب اور سماج
مولانا ندیم الواجدی

Maulana Nadeemul Wajidi writes that incidents of honour killings are on the rise. Despite the strict stand of the courts the incidents of honour killing could not be controlled. Legal experts have claimed that over 1000 youth are killed in the name of honour every year. In traditional societies, this barbaric practice is not only considered fair but a matter of pride. Most of the cases of honour killing occur in Haryana, Punjab and western UP. According to an estimate, about nine hundred couples have been killed by their own close relatives in the current year for marrying outside their caste or religion. In most cases the killers could not be arrested. In some cases, though arrests were made but the local panchayats and leaders came out in their defence. It is understood that the honour killing accused will not be brought to book. Probably they will go scot free due to insufficient evidence or non pursuance of the cases by the victims’ kin. BY Pirbhu Lal Satyani

In this Urdu book titled Hamey bhi Jeene do, Published by Asar Publications, Lahore, 2005, Pirbhu Lal Satyani, a Hindu human rights activist in Lahore, has documented the plight of dalit Hindus in Pakistan. He says that a large number of dalit Hindus live in Sindh and South Punjab. To retain their supremacy, the pandits and the leaders divided the society and pushed dalits to the bottom of the social heirarchy. Not only has religious extremism affected them but also the state has neglected them.

In the second section of this book, the author describes how the number of Pakistani Dalits (whom he still calls “untouchable”) is declining. But, he says, the reason for this is not so much their migration to India, as is the case with upper caste Hindus, but forcible conversion to Islam. Some Dalits, he says, also convert out of greed, for the sake of better jobs and perks.

In the third section Pirbhu Lal Satyani focusses on the plight of the Dalit women and the atrocities meted out against them not only in their society but also by the majority Muslim community. Mr Satyani says that forcible conversions and rape of their women by the majority community are commonplace and the administration generally turns a blind eye to them. Most of the time the police does not register and FIR because of the influence of the majority community and even if they do, they do not take action.

The women have to wrap themselves up in typical coarse cloth so as to make them distinguishable in society. They suffer at every step thanks to their poverty, illiteracy and ignorance. They do not send their girls to school due to the fear that they might be kidnapped for forcible conversion or sexual assault. The author narrates a number of incidents where their women were kidnapped and sexually assaulted or made to convert to Islam.

In the fourth and final section, Mr Satyani makes a number of recommendations to the Pakistan government for the upliftment and development of the ‘untouchables’ in the country.

Interestingly he says that during the freedom movement, Bhim Rao Ambedkar's slogan of 'Achhutsthan' was replaced by Mahatma Gandhi's "Harijan"( Son of Bhagwan, son of Hari). It was the political opportunism of Mahatma Gandhi that got in the way of the establishment of Achhutsthan and therefore  saved India from another division.

New Delhi, 24 June 2010: Addressing a conference of Urdu editors, the CM of Delhi Mrs Shiela Dixit said on Thursday that the government was committed to solving the problems faced by Urdu newspapers and proposed to set up  a seven-member committee for that purpose. She further assured the editors that a system would  be evolved to ensure that all the small and big newspapers get maximum number of advertisements. Responding to the proposal that since the problems of the minorities  are generally raised by the Urdu newspapers, the advertisements involving minorities should be given to Urdu newspapers, she said that it was a good proposal and would be considered.

On the question of providing a place for Urdu Press Club, the Chief Minister said that for the time being a hall in the Old Secretariat of Delhi could be modified and used as Urdu Press Club. Computers and internet facilities will be provided in the club, she assured.

She also said that the DIP had been told to appoint temporary Information Officer as long as Urdu Information Officer was not appointed.

The conference was presided over by Minister for Industries, Harun Yusuf and attended by Health Minister Prof. Kiran Walia, Urdu Academy Vice-Chairman Prof. Akhtarul Wasay, Khalid Anwar, Dr Aziz Burney, Masoom Muradabadi, Anis Azmi and Marghoob Haider Abdi.

The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Mr Tejender Khanna said that the message of the great sufi saints needed to be spread as they preach humanity and peace. A mehfil-e-sama(qawwali session) was organised by the Hasan Ara Trust at the India Habitat Centre coinciding with the Urs of Hadhrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in which Mr Khanna was the chief guest. The renowned sufi singer and musician Adil Hussaini Haidrabadi presented the mystic verses of Maulana Rumi, Amir Khusrau, Bulle Shah, Kabir and other sufi poets and spellbound the audience. In her inaugural speech, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dixit said that mysticism built bridges and there was a need to spread the message of peace the sufi saints.

On this occasion, Singer Adil Husseini was conferred the Amir Khusrau Fakhre Hind Award.

The 789th annual URS celebrations of Hadhrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer got underway on Tuesday which has been attended by about 2.5 lakh devotees. During the Urs which lasts for six days, the devotees recite the Holy Quran and pray.

The speakers at a meeting held in Delhi to discuss the opening of campuses of the Aligarh Muslim University in five towns of India said that there was no legal hurdle in the establishment of the campuses and asked everyone to extend his support to complete this gigantic task. The meeting was attended by the Bihar MLA Akhtarul Iman, the President of the AMU Old Boys Association, Khwaja Md Shahid, the Supreme Court Lawyer Feroz Ghazi and the editor of the Afkar-e-Milli, Qasim Rasool Ilyas.

Mr Akhtarul Iman said that the founder of AMU Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and his companions had faced many hurdles and hardships in establishing the University. Referring to the opposition of a section of people in the Muslim community as well as the communal outfits to the AMU campuses, Mr Akhtarul Iman said that the university was facing many obstacles in the opening of campuses but hoped that all the obstacles would be overcome. He further said that the Vice-Chancellor of the university as well as the university administration  had given their consent. The President of India had also given her written approval.

It should be noted that The University Action Committee represented by an Old Boy has filed a PIL in the Allahabad High Court challenging the decision of opening AMU campuses in distant towns, citing the University Act which says that a university can not open campuses beyond 25 km radius.

In its very short journey spanning a little over 12 years, the internet has come a long way. With the advent of the 2.0 technology, the worldwideweb has ushered in its renaissance of sorts. The new technology has given birth to facebook, twitter and other social networking sites which have become popular not with the general masses but also with the elite as several high profile personalities, celebrities, ministers, bureaucrats, actors and actresses take part in discussions on different topics with the general masses around the world and share their feelings and information with them. The internet has become a quintessential part of our lives, so to say.

In this article in Urdu, Atta Banarsi, writes about the latest trends on the internet.
