Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was one of India’s greatest leaders of the twentieth century. He was the pioneer of Urdu journalism with his newspapers Al Hilal and Al Balaagh, was known for his great oratoratorial skills, was a writer with a distinct style and a farsighted statesman who did not subscribe to the idea of Pakistan. Maulana Azad's association with Bengal particularly Calcutta is of great importance. He was born in Makkah and shifted to Calcutta with his parents when he was 11. Maulana Azad's father Maulana Khairuddin originally belonged to Calcutta but had migrated to Saudi Arabia during the tumultuous period of 1857 Revolt.

Among the leaders of the freedom movement and post Independence India, Maulana Azad had carved out a niche for himself. He was the first Education Minister of Indepent India. He made his political and journalistic debut from Bengal. He was among the leaders who together prevented the division of Bengal. He worked with the stalwarts of Bengal like Surendrananth Banerjee, Prafulla Chandra Roy, Bipin Chandra Pal, Arobindo Ghosh and others. During the Swadeshi Movement, he even delivered lectures in the Town Hall. In his article written in Urdu Mr Firoz Bakht Ahmad takes a detailed look at Maualan Azad's life and political career in Bengal.

Professor Ali Ahmad Fatmi sings hosannas to the great composite culture of India. In this artcle titled "Mushtarka tehzeeb: rewayat aur haqeeqat" (Composite culture: tradition and reality) he renders a critical appreciation of India's composite culture with special reference to Urdu language and literature. He believes that Urdu and composite culture are the two sides of a coin and one is incomplete without the other. The verses of the classical poets like Sauda, Insha, Nazeer Akbarabadi, Hatim etc. reflect the Indian culture and civilisation in its full glory. He quotes from the beautiful poetry of Firaq Gorakhpuri, Iqbal, Nazeer, Mohsin Kakorvi and Jaafar Zatalli to drive home his point. Mr Fatmi quotes a stanza from a poem by Nazeer Akbarabadi in which Kans, Vasudeo, Devki and Yashoda's character and their sweet quarrels become alive. It shows not only Nazeer's knowledge of the Hindu religion and culture but also his deep reverence for it. The concluding part of the article is presented in Urdu below – Editor

By Salman Abdus Samad

“The general opinion is that politics is synonymous with corruption, bribery, deceit, cheating, backbiting, backstabbing etc. The reason behind this perception is widespread corruption among our politicians. We can hardly find a politician with a clean image. However, it should not imply that politics in principle leads to corruption or moral degradation....”

“....... It would be appropriate to state here that today Islam is presented in a way that gives the impression that Islam is merely a sum of some prayers; Islam has no broadness, it is indigent. Islam indeed has golden rules for prayers and meditations but does not have any guiding principle on social affairs and day-to-day issues. It has sufficient principles and instructions for namaz, fasting, zakat, hajj etc. but does not provide sufficient guidelines into other affairs and issues concerning day to day life. It is obvious that ulema alone can interpret and explain Islam to the people. So if they confine Islam to the matters of prayers and ignore broader issues of social importance, it will only lead to misunderstandings about Islam.”

The verdict on the Mumbai attack has come. For us, one bright aspect of the judgement is that two Indian Muslim youths accused in the case have been acquitted by the court. On the one side, the court has observed that Fahim Ansari and Sabahuddin had been falsely implicated by the police and that there were no strong evidences against them. On the other hand it pronouced that it was a war against the state. The court has not only rightly felt but also emphasised on the fact that no Indian Muslim can be involved in the war against his own country. After the pronouncement of the judgement, the lawyers of both the accused echoed the view that the court's verdict had proved the fact that no Indian--Hindu or Muslim-- can ever participate in the war against the country. -- Maulana Asrarul Hasan Qausmi (Journalist and Member of Parliament).

The founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, wanted a separate country for Muslims but his political upbringing in a pluralist society prevented him from declaring Pakistan an Islamic state. Contrary to the general perception in India, Mr Jinnah was arguably a secular and liberal Muslim who wanted a Pakistan where all citizens would be equal in the eyes of the constitution irrespective of their religion, caste or creed. But leaders like Liaqat Ali Khan and power hungry opportunistic religious leaders wanted it to be otherwise. In this beautifully written series titled, "Objectives Resolution and Secularism", Mr Wajahat Masood delves deep into history to find out how Jinnah's dream of a secular and democratic Pakistan was shattered. -– Editor

“Once again I stress to all the Muslims to co-operate with the government and its personnel against the violators of law, traitors and conspirators who are responsible for this anarchy to save the Hindu neighbours. There will be rule of Constitutional government, not of the traitors, conspirators and unruly mob in Pakistan. The government of Pakistan will take every possible action against such criminals and they will be dealt with an iron hand. My full sympathies are with the Hindus, most of whom were provoked by propaganda. In fact, the main purpose was to drive them out of Sindh. As a result, many Hindus had to suffer. The people who brought Sikhs to Karachi without informing the concerned officials, the District Magistrate and the police and lodged them in the gurudwara could not been tracked as yet, but a full inquiry will be conducted into the matter.”—Wajahat Masood

After mid-July both the cities became a part of such a communal confrontation that can be called the duet of barbarism. The irresponsible inflammatory oration of the religious leaders of two communities was reaching its crescendo. The cut-off organs of Muslim victims would be sent to Lahore in brass containers (the circumcised organs would indicate the religious identity of the dead). The next day, the brave men of Lahore would despatch a gift of similar nature to Amritsar. A train of Muslim refugees coming from east Punjab was slaughtered in Amritsar, and the next day a whole train of non-Muslim refugees was massacred. When a procession of nude girls was taken out in Lahore, the Muslim girls were meted out the same treatment in the streets of Amritsar the following day. When the Muslim localities were burnt down in Amritsar, the incidents of burning down of non-Muslim localities started in Lahore. A number of Muslim authors have written in their books without any regret or remorse, rather with a little pride that in the non-Muslim locality of Lahore called Shah Almi which was a marvel of architecture, the Hindus had made proper arrangements for protection against the attacks of the rioters. But some Muslim youths sneaked into Shah Almi through underground drains, and the locality comprising beautiful timber framed homes turned into ashes in no time. -- Wajahat Masood

There are some Aayats mentioned above as examples, there are many Aayats in the same context to prove that obedience to the prophet (pbuh) is as mandatory as obedience of Allah Kareem. The loyalty to the prophet (pbuh) is the source for obtaining closeness and favour of Allah Kareem. His (pbuh) duty is to invite people to welfare and prosperity and prevent them from evils and illegitimate things, deliver judgments in conflicts and differences. No one should contradict his (pbuh) decisions; if anyone contradicts or refuses to accept his (pbuh) decisions; undoubtedly, he is guilty of “Kufr” (transgression). The following and obedience to Islam ignoring the teachings, statements and the deeds of the prophet (pbuh) is meaningless. The order of loyalty and obedience to the prophet (pbuh) is baseless, if only the Quran-e-Kareem alone  is considered the final document ignoring Hadees Shareef. It is not a fake opinion, but the Quran-e-Kareem itself has fixed its authenticity and compulsion. -- Maulana Nadeemul Wajidee (Translated from Urdu by Raihan Nezami, NewAgeIslam.com)

As soon as we alighted from the lift, drops of rain fell on our bluish raincoats. We were standing on the wall which was spread across hundreds of miles like a ferocious cobra and whose foundation was laid on the dust of bones of thousands of human beings.

This wall of China and the pyramids of Egypt which were associated with the names of the emperors of China and the pharaohs of Egypt were built with the blood of millions of farmers and slaves. We stood dumbfounded and looked at the valleys and hills which were far far away. That moment I had seen Mr Abdullah and Mr Malik take off their glasses and wipe off tears. There was surprise and question in my eyes. Mr Malik said, "He remained unmoved like this wall. He was born to free the farmers and slaves but the tyrants hanged him." -- Zahida Hina, Karachi
