War on Terror

Serving justice is the core of the faith of a devout Muslim.  “O who you believe, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for God, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not personal inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.” (The Qur’an Chapter 4, verse 135.)

The Worlds Failed War on Terrorism
Nervana Mahmoud

Unlike what many Muslims and the liberal western elite emphasize, contemporary terrorism undoubtedly has a religious element to it. It is frankly disingenuous to deny this reality. It is also futile, however, to judge Islam. Islam is not an entity, a specific institution, or a state.

All 25 websites, barring a few exceptions, are affiliated to the IS and being used to propagate the terror group’s ideology. “While some of the sites contain videos of preachers appealing to the youth to join the terror group’s fold, others contain plain literature aimed at enticing young men towards the Jihadi ideology,” a source said, adding that most of the sites were interactive to keep the recruitment channel open.

ISIS Wants a Clash of Civilizations: Let's Not Give In
Juan Cole

A “war” on terror that characterizes, for example, all Syrian refugees as potential combatants thus plays right into the hands of recruiters like Abaaoud, who aim to “sharpen the contradictions” between Muslims and those of Christian heritage. We should rather be observing that some Syrians have joined a criminal cartel that has taken over some desert towns at gunpoint, but that most Syrians have not done so.

Rise of ISIS: Should India Fear
Shakti Sinha

What then is the way forward for India? One, engage more rigorously with the Gulf countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to UAE, the first such visit since 1981, was long overdue. ... Intelligence cooperation, including in tracking cyberspace, is necessary to disrupt recruiting networks, fund flows and other lifelines that sustain extreme jihadism.

Two, try and change the emerging Wahhabi/Salafi narrative in Muslim communities by strengthening traditional behaviour patterns and practices. As noted scholar and reformist Sultan Shahin complains, the Indian establishment only engages with bearded mullahs even if they are obscurantists. Recognition of diversity from Muslims and the engagement with forward looking individuals and institutions would be a good start. The youth are keen to grasp the opportunities provided by an emerging India, and they are best placed to replace the narrative of victimhood and discrimination with one of participation and hope.

Three, this should be matched by keeping an open eye on potential ‘emigrants’, and families given the confidence that the state would work with them to de-radicalise these misguided youth with no stigma attached. Four, many occupations like weavers and other artisans, where Muslims predominate, are faced with obsolescence. ...

Five, faced with an avalanche of terrorist violence resulting in many civilian causalities, police under pressure have occasionally charge-sheeted innocents who have been locked up for years before being released by courts for lack of evidence. Our legal and police system discriminates against the poor who lack resources and connections. Where police have acted with bona fides, mistakes must be accepted but where there is clear mala fide and injustice, restorative justice demands should not be ignored. The characteristic of a strong state is not random violence or arbitrary action but its ability to separate genuine mistakes from mischief. And for ensuring the rule of law where the powerful do not get away because of the culture of impunity......

Thoughts on Countering Terrorism

Thoughts on Countering Terrorism

It is true that present Muslim extremism is the result of the glamourization of the self-styled concept of global Khilafat or caliphate. Its real solution lies in de-glamourizing this false ideology developed by extremists through a misinterpretation of Islamic sources. Moreover, de-glamourization of the Khilafat can be achieved by de-Islamizing this concept of the Khilafat based on false interpretation.

Is Kenya at War with Al-Shabab?
Patrick Gathara

Kenya is at war. This mantra is repeated over and over ad infinitum by government officials and pro-establishment types. At a time of military conflict, we are told, peacetime rules and conventions do not apply and we should be prepared to give up some of the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the constitution....

Outlaw Takfir to Curb Jihadism
Kunwar Khuldune Shahid

The ideological superstructure of Jihadism is based on one simple idea that is inherent to orthodox religion, one which many of us and our state institutions proudly manifest: religious superiority. Any Islamic state that differentiates between a Muslim and a non-Muslim – which most of them do – becomes a breeding ground for Jihadism....

Although Islamic State regularly captures global headlines, the so-called fight against ''terrorism'' is not just confined to the Middle East. The United States quietly maintains other fronts in the War on Terror - including the Philippines....

Failure of Obama Doctrine
Ramzy Baroud

To suggest that the US policies in Yemen were a “failure” is an understatement. It implies that the US had at least attempted to succeed. But “succeed” at what? The US drone war had no other objective aside from celebration the elimination of whomever the US hit list designates as terrorist....

Life Under ISIS: Is The Defeat of ISIS in Iraq Inevitable?
Patrick Cockburn

The idea is to repeat the US success in 2006-07 in supporting the Sunni “Awakening Movement” which weakened, though it never destroyed, al-Qaeda in Iraq, the predecessor of Isis. Now as then, many Sunnis hate the extremists for their merciless violence and enforcement of outlandish and arbitrary rules on personal behaviour that have no connection to even the strictest interpretation of Sharia....

Terror is Terror
Zahid Fayaz

This is the real problem. When you knowingly identify terrorism with a particular religion, you polarise the society. Unfortunately a campaign has been launched against Islam all around the world, by the powers who feel "threatened" by its ideology, particularly by its political set up. For almost five decades, they were in tussle with an "enemy" in the form of communism and fought tooth and nail against it (at that time, Islamists were no less than comrades and no less than Mujahedeen). But once Soviet Union disintegrated in early 1990's, West found itself enemy less. They did need enemy so that aggressions which they launch from time to time, could be justified. And the new enemy were one time friends.....Islamists. And now every attempt is being made to demonize political ideology propagated by Islamists. And every violent act done is put in their bag (even though mainstream Islamists have never been in favour of violence and condemned it every time)....

Libya, a New Terror Theatre in A Larger Arena
Eyad Abu Shakra

The Qaddafi regime, like other Arab clan-supported “Supreme Leader”-led dictatorships, always lied when preaching “Arabism” “Secularism,” and “Socialism,” while meddling in the nation’s social fabric. Like other dictatorships it played on and exploited tribal, sectarian, ethnic and regional differences and sensitivities; thus fomenting widespread suspicion, fear and even hatred, which surfaced in a long subdued and maltreated population the moment the yoke of suppression was lifted....

Why Does ISIS Keep Making Enemies?
Peter Bergen

The name of the Dabiq magazine itself helps us understand ISIS' worldview. The Syrian town of Dabiq is where the Prophet Mohammed is supposed to have predicted that the armies of Islam and "Rome" would meet for the final battle that will precede the end of time and the triumph of true Islam. In the recent issue of Dabiq it states: "As the world progresses towards al-Malhamah al-Kubrā, ('the Great Battle' to be held at Dabiq) the option to stand on the sidelines as a mere observer is being lost." In other words, in its logic, you are either on the side of ISIS or you are on the side of the Crusaders and infidels....

Its ideology has spread much further, with pledges of allegiance from terrorist groups in Egypt, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Yemen and now Libya. Days before Isis released its gory video depicting the Egyptians’ beheadings, Libya’s former Prime Minister warned that the group would soon reach the Mediterranean and even Europe if order was not restored in the country….

The attacks in January on the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine and a kosher supermarket in Paris raised many questions that Europeans are currently trying to grapple with. Some of them concern the relationship between Islam and the kind of terrorism committed in its name. Yet, the way the respective debates are being conducted – at least that’s the impression I got from the German media that I have followed during the weeks after the attacks – reveals how ill-prepared some on the old continent are to formulate and address the relevant problems….

The Taliban Are Not Terrorists, Says The US, But If The Taliban Were Not Terrorists, Why Had The US Wasted Money And Resources In Afghanistan?
Musa Khan Jalalzai

For more than 13 years, people around the globe almost took it for granted that the Taliban is a terrorist group that shares many similarities with al Qaeda. The White House spokesman also denied that the Taliban are a terrorist group. What does the US want in Afghanistan? The answer is murky. Now, the real concept of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ Taliban has also become limpid; on January 23, 2015, the US declared Pakistani Taliban leader Mullah Fazlullah a global terrorist and Mullah Omer a Mujahid…..

War with Isis: The West Is Wrong Again In Its Fight against Terror
Patrick Cockburn

Islamic State (Isis) will remain at the centre of the escalating crisis in the Middle East this year as it was in 2014. The territories it conquered in a series of lightning campaigns last summer remain almost entirely under its control, even though it has lost some towns to the Kurds and Shia militias in recent weeks…..

How can any war be successful if not waged against a tangible reality, but an ideology, an emotion that is only perpetuated by further acts of violence? Since 2001, a series of conflicts have ensued in the quest to end ‘terror’, but surely by killing civilians ‘terror’ is being transposed from our realities onto theirs? In the years after 9/11, the Western world has led nations into armed conflict with nations within the Muslim world, and the wider political repercussions are made almost entirely invisible….

What Dr. James Mitchell and Dr. Bruce Jessen did have was a check for a cool $80 million. For some, the war on terror was already becoming a lucrative business. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, a new company, Mitchell, Jessen & Associates, was set up by the two former U.S. air force psychologists to service the CIA’s interrogation program, and rake in the profits. While in the air force, the pair had trained U.S. troops on how to resist torture. Yet neither had ever conducted a real interrogation. They knew nothing about extracting accurate information from suspects. Instead, they created fantasy torture sessions to harden up their trainees, sessions which they simply reverse-engineered for the CIA torture program…..

In A Belated But Welcome Step, India Bans Islamic State: But What About The Islamic State Within?

Before fleeing to Iraq, Arif Majid had left a note to his parents and sister which gives us a peep into his ideas and thoughts:

“I used to cry when I found you submerged in sins, smoking cigarettes, taking interest from banks, watching TV, pornography, leading luxurious lives, mixing with opposite sex, not praying and not growing beards. These acts will lead you to the hell fire.”

The thoughts of Arif Majid makes it clear that he hated the society he lived in as a place full of sin and so he wanted to leave a country that was kufristan and become a citizen of the country that was fighting for the establishment of an Islamic caliphate where there will be no sins, people will grow beard, will not watch TV, will not mix with opposite sex, will not smoke cigarettes and will not take interest from banks.

There are certain religious organizations in the country, Majlis-e-Ahrar-e-Islam of Indian Punjab being a glaring example - that continuously campaign that India is a Kufristan (land of infidels).  India is a secular and democratic country while Islam, in the view of these clerics, is against secularism and democracy. His letter says it all. He was radicalized by the regular intolerant teachings of "Islam" imparted to him on the thousands of Wahhabi websites run with Saudi money internet.
