    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

A frequent contributor to NewAgeIslam.com, Muhammad Yunus, is an Engineering graduate from IIT Kharagpur (1966) and retired as technical director, from a multinational company (1997) and later from a large industrial complex (2010). He has been engaged in an in-depth study of the Qur’an since early 90’s, focusing on its core message and co-authored an exegetic work, “Essential Message of Islam,” which received the approval of al-Azhar al-Sharif, Cairo in 2002, and following restructuring and refinement was endorsed and authenticated by Dr. Khaled Abou El-Fadl of UCLA, and published in 2009.

Mr. Yunus has penned more than a hundred articles projecting Islam as an inclusive religion of peace, justice, and harmony, dismissing hatred, bigotry, and supremacist, exclusivist and misogynist notions. He has critically evaluated Islam’s secondary sources, advocated inclusion of secular subjects in the madrassa, framed exhaustive refutation of fatwas from leading terror ideologues, exploded the notion of political Islam and Pan-Islamism, and dispelled misconceptions about Islam and its Prophet using authentic sources. He has written a series of articles delegitimizing violent extremism on ideological and historical grounds, and soliciting national and international fatwas against Muslim terror outfits. He has also strongly denounced institutionalized gender injustice and discrimination – particularly against Muslim women. Last but not least, he has proposed an exhaustive package of reforms in populist Islamic thoughts, in tune with the pristine Qur’anic message to distinguish faith from culture and symbolism from the essence and to liberate Islamic societies from the shackles of the Medieval era and the domination of the clergy.

The Heinous Crimes That ISIS Is Perpetrating Totally Opposed To Islam And Those Killed Fighting For ISIS May Earn Divine Wrath Instead Of Paradise And ‘Hurs’ – An SOS To All Mosque Imams
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

While ISIS does not command any sympathy among the Ulama and Imams of the world – with the exception of its own ideologues, they all share the global disgrace ISIS evokes for its claim to representing true Islam. There is also a growing misconception among the non-Muslims of the world that the Muslims’ claim of Islam being a religion of peace is a mere propaganda and a bluff.  The sad reality is ISIS is continuing to attract recruits, especially from among the new converts or those having no knowledge of the message of Islam, and those opposed to Islam are producing pamphlets with false information and quotations to directly implicate the Qur’an as the ideological fount of ISIS…..

Clearing Some Gross Misconceptions about Islam and Its Prophet
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

One may quote ten, a hundred, a thousand or a million writers saying just the opposite things about Islam and its Prophet, but the truth of history is understood far more accurately by the most learned and the most scholarly who spend all their life in pursuit of knowledge and pen down what they learnt in scholarly publications that receive world recognition and shine without fading like a beacon in the night-sky. The authors quoted above are all like beacons of night-sky and not flashes in the pans of history as those clinging to pre-conceived notions and dedicating their scholarship to establish what they want to establish, like the oxen of the traditional oil mill who remain in the same position even after taking a thousand rounds of their circular path or the proverbial ass of the Prophet Jesus, who remained an ass even after crossing the seven seas…..

The concluding claim of the Fatwa of being authenticated by the Qur’an and the Hadith is a blatant lie, as each of its four broken down propositions are refuted on the strength of the Qur’an. The colossal death and sufferings of Muslim civilians in just and anti-terror or defensive invasions, the massive destruction of infrastructure in Muslim cities, the stigmatization Muslims and Islam in the West and the brush-stroking of the global Muslim community as terror suspects, as the world witnessed over the past decade, represents probably the darkest era in Islam. Muslim women in the non-Muslim / Western world may relax on the symbolic veiling (head-ear-chin cover) and create a socially interactive performance oriented identity as commanded by the Qur’an.
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

The objective of this essay is twofold. First to tell female Muslim students as well those exposed to the public arena what the Qur’an really says about hijab or dressing norms for them; secondly, to lay down a set of arguments in favor of relaxing the ‘formal hijab’ in predominantly non-Muslim societies. With this we delve into the Qur’an – the primary, uncorrupted, undisputed, and universal fount of guidance that sets out broad outlines of the allowable and forbidden and also admits the use of reason, discretion, and flexibility....

Interpreting Islam’s Pillars of Faith as Symbols of Militant Jihad Is Heresy - An Intense ‘Kufr’ And Its Wilful Muslim Followers Stand as Kafirin – Let There Be No Doubt About It
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Let this be an open call to the Ulema of the world to call a spade, a spade; and a heretic a heretic. One drop of deadly poison in a large ‘Deg’ (utensil) of food is enough to kill all those who eat of it. Radical Islamic ideology is like a deadly poison in the cauldron of Islamic message as enshrined in the Qur’an and those who knowingly subscribe to it and harbour a militant notion of the Qur’anic message are veritably intense in Kufr and hypocrisy, who deny the truth after pledging to it and stand as Kafirin (wilful denier of an incontrovertible truth) – let there be no benefit of doubt.....

Declare The ISIS As The Kharijites (Those Who Seceded From Islam) As This Article Demonstrates And Declares: Global SOS To The Ulama, Muftis, Intellectuals And Scholars Of Islam
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

The author of this document, who earlier proposed for an international fatwa against terrorism (link below) [3] hereby declares the expulsion of ISIS from the pale of Islam in his personal capacity and calls upon the Muftis and Ulama of different countries of the world where there is at least one mosque, to declare them as such and to have nothing to do with them and warn all members of the community to disown them and have no sympathy for them as their Islamic title may evoke.

Faith is between man and God but ISIS leadership has overstepped the limits of faith by inflicting the punishment of burning alive a fellow human (the just reported case involving a Jordanian captured Pilot) – a punishment that the Qur’an reserves only for God, albeit in the Spiritual Realm. Hence, this humble writer entertains no doubts in his mind that ISIS ideologues have nothing to do with Islam – and have broken the bond of faith by virtually acting like God on earth.

Defending the Prophet of Islam against Vulgar Charges from both Islamophobic and Radical Islamic Intellectuals and So Called Rationalists
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

The truth is the simple Muslims in early Islam created fanciful imageries around the person of the Prophet to make him a legendary and extra-ordinary figure. That included, among other things, colourful details about some of his marriages, which may sometimes be as imaginative as the stories surrounding the birth of the Prophet: a blaze of white light on Abdullah’s forehead as he went to consume marriage with his bride that led to the conception of Muhammad (Peace be upon him), light from Amina’s pregnant belly illuminating the night sky right up to Syria,  a violent earthquake made the palace of Chosroes the Great tremble, and shattered fourteen of its towers; the sacred fire, kept alight for more than a thousand years by Persian worshippers went out, all the idols of the universe were found with their heads bowed down in great shame and so forth….

Hadith Is Not a Divine Scripture of Islam – a la Qur’an

Hadith could not be divinely revealed – parallel or complementary or even remotely synergetic to the Qur’an as the article claims. Any further elaboration, which can no doubt be added, will, however, be like killing the scarecrow and tax the readers. Indeed we need the Hadith to know the ways the Prophet performed the Islamic rituals like prayer, fasting and hajj but we cannot consider it divine or even indirect revelation (Wah’i) because then we will make a gross error by elevating what is fallible and historically derived, era specific to the level of divinity – an open shirk….

The irony is the Ulema of Islam regard the Ahadith (narratives), however insulting to the Prophet, as some kind of indirect revelation and therefore do not muster the courage to say a word against their compilers, narrators or initial reporters. They fail to understand that all such accounts that show the Prophet as a legendary character, let alone a great warrior, a sadist or sexually obsessed are merely fictions of people’s imagination – verbalization of the imageries that rose in the minds of his admirers or detractors.  They still study them and keep them alive as part of Islam’s Secondary sources, but if someone who is not a Muslim allows his artistic mind to fabricate something about the Prophet in written or art form or as a cartoon, the hell breaks loose upon the Muslim world……

    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Those who have a basic knowledge of the evolution of different schools of law (Madhab) in Islam will know about the emergence of a rationalist school of thought, known as Muʿtazilah in the second century of Islam. It advocated use of reason in religion and attempted to evolve rational explanation to various theological notions like divine unity, historical context of revelation, and the role of humans in earning divine approval. One of their core doctrines was about the Qur’an being a created book that responded to the living realities of its audience. Their views enjoyed the patronage of the intellectual elite of the society – many Caliphs and viziers, but ran counter to the popular notion of the Qur’an being eternally preserved in the heaven and thus co-existent with God….

While we do not intend to blame the jurists of Islam for privileging and even sanctifying their views, for which there must have been strong existential grounds, we do blame the posterity to cling to their views and freezing the Classical Sharia Law of Islam at it medieval configuration.  From the foregoing discussion it is clear that what we call Classical Sharia Law of Islam is a system of law that the Muslim jurists belonging to different law schools evolved based on their own opinions as informed by their Islamic knowledge, worldview and historical realities of the era…..

The narrative so evolved also shows that the Qur’an hurls the epithet of ‘Kufr’ (denial of self evident or irrefutable proposition) probably on more occasions to a faction of the Prophet’s followers than the Jews and Christians of the era as commonly held. It also shows that the Qur’an does not single out the polytheists as Rijz (abominable, 9:28) – it ascribes it to the hypocrites as well (9:95), who also incur divine curse (9:68, 33:73) and are called liars (9:42, 9:45) and deviants (Fasiqun) (9:67)....

The Qur’an was revealed at a time, the early seventh century of the Christian era, when the world at large was in a state of Jahiliya - an Arabic word that denotes a state of darkness and gloom (Zulumat) when the notion of universal justice had not evolved, punishments were arbitrary, the common man was bullied, oppressed and exploited, slavery was normative and, women were treated like chattel and brutalized, to cite the major vices of the era. The Qur’an came to bring humanity out of darkness into light (2:257, 14:1, 57:9), and to lift the burden that was on them from before (7:157). Since slavery was at the root of many of societal evils, it had to be eradicated to pave the way for its quantum reforms....

The Radical Intelligentsia of Islam and Its Orthodox Ulema Are the ‘Hypocrites’ and ‘Nomadic Arabs Intense In Kufr’ Of This Era: They Are Its Twin Internal Enemies, and Must Be Resisted
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Islam is a universal, gender neutral, peaceful, progressive, intellectually effervescent, socially liberal, educationally fervent, intellect driven, democratic and pluralistic religion. But the version of Islam that is being preached round the clock in poplar TV Channels and by countless Ulema and Imams in numerous madrasas around the world is exclusivist, misogynic, violence prone, intellectually frozen, socially repressive and regimented, educationally backward, scientifically retrograde, totalitarian and monolithic. This virtually stifles the advancement of Islamic societies, blocks any reform and reduces Islam to an atavistic cult – the civilisational sediment of a petrified world religion [1], paving the way for yet another form of colonization. Its appropriation of terror as proclaimed by its fanatic ideologues puts into question the integrity of all peace loving Muslims. More dangerously, its militant outfits draw inspiration from their ideological mentors, notably Ibn-e-Taimiya and his followers as well as some verses of the Qur’an and Hadith accounts in stark denial of historical relativism thereby associating Islam with terrorism. Hence, the present version of theology-dominated Islam must be resisted.

In a restrictive sense, ‘Dawah’ connotes a missionary work for propagating the religion of Islam. This can be in the form of a preacher or televangelist lecturing an audience on Islam or comparative religion with the singular goal of gaining converts, or a group of Ulema going out as a preaching community (Tablighi Jama’at) across the country or continents to preach Islam or, for that matter, a Muslim country funding construction of mosques in its own or foreign lands with the goal of spreading the Light of Islam. A veritably ‘Jahiliya’ movement held the Islamic societies in its pincer grip since around the sixth century of its calendar. The movement waged under the euphemism of ‘Taqlid’ - a juristic notion of precedence aimed at freezing customs, traditions and knowledge at what was normative (Sunna) in the Prophet’s era, and thus appropriate many customs and notions of Jahiliya that overlapped with his era. The Qur’anic allusions to Jesus – the divine nature of his birth, his power to show miracles and the exalted position of his mother, and the Qur’an’s express acknowledgment to the divinity of their faith (5:46) forbids Muslims from maligning Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary and their religious symbols and icons. 'Make Revolutionary Changes in the Islamic Theology of Consensus to Fight Jihadism': Sultan Shahin Asks Muslim Nations at UNHRC in Geneva

Sixteen years after 9/11, the issue of Jihadi terrorism has become even more complex and widespread.

First, though Jihadism is a violent offshoot of Wahhabism and Salafism, the international community has allowed the fountainhead of Wahhabi/Salafi ideology to continue to spend tens of billions of dollars to Wahhabise the world Muslim community.

Second, we recently saw with horror, but without any protest from the international community, the sight of a UN-designated terrorist, with a ten-million-dollar bounty on his head, launch a political party and nominate another US-designated terrorist to contest democratic elections in Pakistan. Apparently, some countries can ignore UN directives with impunity.

Third, the Muslim community has failed to grasp that Jihadism spread so rapidly around the world because at its core it is not very different from the theology of consensus that informs the religious beliefs and practices of all Muslim sects. That is why Jihadis are not impressed when we Muslims either proclaim that Islam is a religion of peace and pluralism or when we try to wash our hands off Jihadism by claiming that it has nothing to do with Islam. If we Muslims want to live as honourable citizens in the 21st century’s globalised world, we must rethink our consensus theology in all its dimensions and make revolutionary changes to bring it in line with the needs of present times....
