    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

A frequent contributor to NewAgeIslam.com, Muhammad Yunus, is an Engineering graduate from IIT Kharagpur (1966) and retired as technical director, from a multinational company (1997) and later from a large industrial complex (2010). He has been engaged in an in-depth study of the Qur’an since early 90’s, focusing on its core message and co-authored an exegetic work, “Essential Message of Islam,” which received the approval of al-Azhar al-Sharif, Cairo in 2002, and following restructuring and refinement was endorsed and authenticated by Dr. Khaled Abou El-Fadl of UCLA, and published in 2009.

Mr. Yunus has penned more than a hundred articles projecting Islam as an inclusive religion of peace, justice, and harmony, dismissing hatred, bigotry, and supremacist, exclusivist and misogynist notions. He has critically evaluated Islam’s secondary sources, advocated inclusion of secular subjects in the madrassa, framed exhaustive refutation of fatwas from leading terror ideologues, exploded the notion of political Islam and Pan-Islamism, and dispelled misconceptions about Islam and its Prophet using authentic sources. He has written a series of articles delegitimizing violent extremism on ideological and historical grounds, and soliciting national and international fatwas against Muslim terror outfits. He has also strongly denounced institutionalized gender injustice and discrimination – particularly against Muslim women. Last but not least, he has proposed an exhaustive package of reforms in populist Islamic thoughts, in tune with the pristine Qur’anic message to distinguish faith from culture and symbolism from the essence and to liberate Islamic societies from the shackles of the Medieval era and the domination of the clergy.

The notion of coercing the Muslims to abide by the various social, moral and ethical commandments of the Qur’an, or the non-Muslims to convert to Islam contradicts the message of Islam. Traditionally Religious Police were engaged to ensure compliance with visible rituals of Islam, which imposed such a regimentation of activities that stalled intellectual activity and pre-empted any political opposition or dissent. ...

Summing Up: Refutation of Sheikh Yousuf Al-Abeeri's Fatwa Supporting Wanton Killing of Innocent Civilians under Special Circumstances and Thus Justifying the 9/11 Attacks – Part 8
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Part-8. This concluding part singularly focuses on brutal and mass killing of the enemy.  It begins with the lawfulness of burning the enemy as it established earlier, and symbiotically appropriates  “opening the dams of rivers and lakes” to drown the inmates of a fort or besieged town, launching mortar attack  and “releasing snakes and scorpions on the enemy even if the women and children are also mixed with the men”. It then lays down a few tiers of argument on the strength of several jurists on the lawfulness of these measures to which It adds ‘demolishing their buildings, spreading poison and smoke” if it is not possible to capture or dominate them without resorting to these practices”. Having thus imperceptibly established the justification of a terror attack through a succession of arguments the Fatwa leapfrogs from medieval battlefield to the American cities and questions the sanity of any Muslim who declares “killing the Americans even in New York and Washington is unlawful.”

The concluding claim of the Fatwa of being authenticated by the Qur’an and the Hadith is a blatant lie, as each of its proposition is refuted on the strength of the Qur’an and this concluding part of the Fatwa and the eight parts cumulatively do not table a single Qur’anic verse or authenticated (Sahih) Hadith narration (such as from Imam Bukhari or Muslim) to support its theme - though any Hadith narration would not have lent it any credence as the Qur’an refutes each part of the Fatwa and all the eight parts cumulatively.....

... the Qur’an offers protection and coequal personal rights to women and those who deny them such rights today are the deniers of the message of the Qur’an – though God knows best. The Islamic Sharia law of this era must draw on the Qur’an, which is undoubtedly the highest source of law in Islam and not rely on its rulings that were inevitably informed by the realities of its formative era - the early through medieval ages when patriarchy reigned supreme and women’s rights and privileges were stunted accordingly.....

Muslims throughout the globe have never been able to recover from the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the impact of Colonialism. Their rich heritage and once mighty and flourishing dynasties have become history - a reminiscent of the past.  Great learning centres such as those in Baghdad, Bukhara, Medina, and Cairo, which boasted of their intellectual advancements and traditional heritage, have lost their pre-eminence and vitality. They have suffered grievously from the legacy of the onslaught and divisions created in Arab lands. Artificially created borders, divisions and establishments of kings and dictators destroyed the very fabric of the rich Islamic tradition. The tradition, once proud of its glorious achievements has continued to deteriorate resulting in a state of intense instability and flux…..

A Call to Global Muslim Communities – Inciters of Sectarian or Communal Violence May Stand 'Kafir’ In the Divine Court and Criminal on Earth
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

In Islam the first prominent signs of differences emerged upon the death of the Prophet (632). His dead body awaiting burial, the community was tormented on the question of his succession. This marked a turning point in its history and precipitated the evolution of a fanatic breakaway sect (Kharijites) (659) and the birth of Shi‘a Islam (661). As, the mutual antagonism between these two sects and the mainstream Sunni Islam has caused colossal loss of life, sufferings and anarchy down the centuries to this very era, it is essential to bring across the purely political underpinning to this terrible divide.   As happens in a situation of sudden leadership vacuum, the major groups in the community aspire to have their candidate fill up the vacuum....

To wrap up this Refutation, let the following concluding remark, appearing in a recent exegetic publication [#] warn the ideologues of terror and assuage the anxiety of the terrorized humanity:  “Finally, as a word of reassurance, the violent extremists – the modern Kharijites and Qaramites (brutally fanatic sects of early Islam) are no more than poisonous sediments of history, and like their counterparts of almost a millennium ago, they are bound to be increasingly marginalized, and eventually jettisoned from the world of Islam.” ...

It begins with “unanimous opinion” of scholars” that giving indirect support to jihad is synonymous with directly taking part in jihad,” connects it with a ruling from Imam Ibn-e-Taimiya and infers “Whatever applies to the fighters will also apply to the rich and resourceful civilians of a nation at war against the Muslims.” It stretches the argument further to appropriate the “innocent and weak (women, children and the old) - whom we call civilians in modern times” in this category....

    Islam,Terrorism and Jihad

Refutation of Sheikh Yousuf Al-Abeeri's Fatwa Supporting Wanton Killing of Innocent Civilians-Part 6
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Use of force cannot eradicate an ideology. Ideology must be countered with ideology. Secular democratic principles that appropriate wars, sanctions, forced occupation and eviction and turn a blind eye to its colossal fallout on the civilians and collateral damages provoke a volcanic eruption of shock and grief that conduces to promote this ideology among the directly affected group or their kinsmen. Only a saleable anti-terror ideology such as enshrined in the Qur’an when understood in a historical critical and holistic manner can help diffuse the Kharijite ideology that the proponent of the Fatwa is espousing under the name of Salafi Islam. As this ideology of crude retribution is preserved and propagated in ultra-conservative religious universities in many Muslim countries of the world, notably, it’s very heartland and aggressively promoted by the Saudi Government under its global propagation campaign, these agencies must stop the propagation of this anti-Qur’anic ideology while propagating the Islamic message. If they don’t do it voluntarily, they must be made to do it through scholarly/diplomatic persuasion or political leverage and other non-violent means. Violence is contagious and breeds violence. With the escalating human and material cost of violence - whether of terror or counter-terror origin, the sceptre of terror haunting the West and the peace and stability of the world at stake, a peaceful path must be explored to tackle the growing menace of Kharijite/ Salafi brand of Islam as appropriated in the preservationist, puritanical Wahabi ideology....

As the foregoing enunciations of the Qur’an may appear a mere window dressing or conveniently claimed to have been abrogated, there are irrefutable historical records that demonstrate the application of the above noble principle even at times of war. Thus the eminent historian Thomas Arnold quotes a contemporaneous Church record on the compassionate treatment of the survivors of the 2nd crusade who were deceived by their Greek allies (who refused to ship them back home to Europe) and lay at the mercy of the Muslim warriors: “The situation of the survivors would have been utterly hopeless, had not the sight of their misery melted the hearts of the Muhammadans to pity.....

Each three parts of the Fatwa (Part-1, 2, 3) is refuted, convincingly and objectively, on the strength of the Qur’an. The inverted interpretation of the theme of the Qur’anic verse 2:178 and lack of relevance of the theme of 59:6 has been demonstrated – though none of these verses are identified by Qur’anic chapter/ verse reference. The right of a Muslim to return violence with like violence on an individual capacity or as a splintered group except in an organized and politically matured and responsible manner has also been refuted….

Refutation of Sheikh Yousuf Al-Abeeri's fatwa appearing in Taliban website Nawa-e-Afghan Jihad supporting wanton killing of innocent civilians and thus justifying the 9/11 attacks - Part-2
    Mohammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Summary: Having largely devoted Part-1 to the theme of mutilation of corpses in the battlefield that some women from the Quraish (the Prophet’s enemy) had taken recourse to against Muslim martyrs,  Part-2 continues to dwell on this theme conceivably to bring the barbaric imagery of mutilation into the reader’s mind side by side with the enunciation of unrelated Qur’anic verses and the Prophet’s forbiddance of this pre-Islamic custom thereby creating an inter-association that repetition creates. That is, a casual, fanatic or not-too critical reader may incorporate or appropriate sadism in his religious thoughts as a prelude to committing acts of wanton terror.

Refutation of Sheikh Yousuf Al-Abeeri's fatwa appearing in Taliban website Nawa-e-Afghan Jihad supporting wanton killing of innocent civilians and thus justifying the 9/11 attacks - Part-1
    Mohammad Yunus, New Age Islam

SUMMING UP: Each of the nine listed components of the Part-1 of the Fatwa has been refuted convincingly one by one. Hence the Part-1 of the Fatwa stands refuted

As a Muslim, a witness to humanity who is commanded to bid to the good and restrain the evil, it is the duty of this writer to raise a loud voice of alarm. Alternate reference to the Qur'anic verses on restraint and defensive warfare with verbal reports by different theological leaders (Imams) and ulama about mutilation of Muslim martyrs and graphic details of the latter is conceivably tailored to indoctrinate the target reader with a sadistic, barbaric and ferocious mindset that will readily accept an exhaustive fatwa on the justification of mass killing of innocent men, women and children including the 9/11 attacks on its face value. A deadly spiritual potion is thus being brewed under the cloak of a fatwa which contradicts the Qur'an on many counts, is self contradictory, bizarre and untenable on others, suicidal for Islam and the broader Muslim community and a grave threat to human civilization.

Challenging, And Shed Of Its Literary Glory in Translation, the Qur'an Offers Clear Clues to Exploring Its Core Commandments - Now Obscured, Corrupted and Distorted By Secondary Theological Sources
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Any person reading a translation of the Arabic Qur’an line by line for the first time is bound to be perplexed if he/she is a believing Muslim and simply bewildered and alienated if he is Qur’an-sceptic Muslim or a non-Muslim. He can neither connect one verse or passage with the next, nor can he find any beauty, coherence and subtlety in its diction. Stark ignorant of the subtlety and nuances of the Qur’anic Arabic, and confronted by literal translation of its idioms and poetical and eschatological imageries, he is angered and frustrated. With no background knowledge of the Qur’an’s historical and Biblical allusions, he is completely at a loss to make any head or tail of what comes under his eyes. With turning of each page he confronts, often in the midst of disjointed and abstruse themes, divine threats and altruistic commandments, both of which he loathes to swallow. Who wants to be told that his wealth is not entirely his own (4:32), or to spend for the needy at every opportunity (2:274), or to write off debt to a poor debtor (2:278), or not to expect any return for a favour bestowed (74:6), or to shun greed, arrogance, back biting and other temptations and cravings of mind? He soon gives up.

The truth is, read pedagogically verse by verse, the Arabic Qur’an – let alone its translation is mind boggling. It is like a literary kaleidoscope that encompasses an exhaustive array of themes, mixes the spiritual with the mundane, the abstruse with the concrete and maintains a sketchy diary of the Prophetic mission with no dates, no names of people or places, no historical details of any kind, scattering all its data in bits and pieces in a random fashion across its text. In the midst of this wide array of themes, it interjects the diverse elements of its guidance and reverts to some of them repeatedly. The matter becomes far more complex in translation.

Use and Misuse of Freedom of Expression on This Islamic Website (New Age Islam) and Need for a Clear Agenda
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

The universal notion of ‘Freedom of speech’ empowers the oppressed to speak against the oppressor, the subject against the King, the holder of one set of doctrine (sect, religion, politics etc.) to question or criticize its opponents and so forth. The objective is to open up human mind to new thoughts, allow it to explore fresh ideas, scan new horizons and rise to new heights. But if the freedom of speech is used in a calculated way to insult other’s deities and ii) demonize a group of people, a website that has the rubric of Islam attached to it, must not entertain it as the Qur’an, which is the highest authority on all matters in Islam does not permit either of the above attitudes (6:108, 49:11).....

I) Muslim terrorist outfits and Radicalized elements – a fractional though visible minority quote them to justify their violent agenda; ii) the Islamophobes/ anti-Islamic website, to justify their hatred and fear of Islam and iii) some among the immigrant Muslims in the West - averse to Qur’anic moral imperative and core paradigms….

The Classical Biography (Sira) Of the Prophet Is More of a Story than a Historical Record – It Is a Highly Embellished History
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

The caption may greatly shock and disturb all Muslims as the Sira of the Prophet plays a very important role in Islam and raising a question mark on its authenticity is like questioning the very essence of their religion. However, greater shock is in store for them if they deny the fact that the Sira contains materials that a Western scholar can piece together to project the Prophet of Islam as “a man that slaughtered captives, robbed caravans, sold women and children into slavery, had sexual relations with captive women, tortured prisoners, married a nine-year-old, forced his adopted son to divorce his wife so Muhammad could have her as a wife, mandated war against non-Muslims, and who had some of his critics and rivals assassinated [1]. Drawing on the Sira, another Western scholar writes: “The examples and command of the Prophet, critics believe, have left a terrible legacy for Islam and cast a lurid light on the history of that religion....

Those who want to reconfigure the hijab into the medieval nun style head-ear-chin wrap-around should be free to do so while those who want to stick to their traditional Quamiz-pyjama-Dupatta should carry on with their traditions. The real hijab is in the gaze (24:30) after covering the Zeenat (God given structural beauty) (24:31) and not in covering or revealing head, ear and chin or what is normally apparent of the body (maa zahara minha, 24:31)….

Delving into the Qur’an further we see it asserting that unless God willed, the Prophet would not have recited the revelation to his audience, nor God would have taught it to them - it asks his audience to reflect on this as he had lived with them for a lifetime before the revelation commenced (10:16, 12:3, 42:52) This demonstrates that the Prophet had not displayed any literary or poetic genius or any philosophical, psychological, political or theological insight all his life prior to the revelation. This in turn indicates that the Prophet neither had any aptitude, nor grooming, nor ambition to found a faith or lead a faith community, let alone becoming the virtual ruler of the whole of Arabia towards the end of his life. His greatest gifts, apart from the power of revelation, were his noble personal qualities. ...

Second, we recently saw with horror, but without any protest from the international community, the sight of a UN-designated terrorist, with a ten-million-dollar bounty on his head, launch a political party and nominate another US-designated terrorist to contest democratic elections in Pakistan. Apparently, some countries can ignore UN directives with impunity.

Third, the Muslim community has failed to grasp that Jihadism spread so rapidly around the world because at its core it is not very different from the theology of consensus that informs the religious beliefs and practices of all Muslim sects. That is why Jihadis are not impressed when we Muslims either proclaim that Islam is a religion of peace and pluralism or when we try to wash our hands off Jihadism by claiming that it has nothing to do with Islam. If we Muslims want to live as honourable citizens in the 21st century’s globalised world, we must rethink our consensus theology in all its dimensions and make revolutionary changes to bring it in line with the needs of present times....
