Islam and Mysticism: Is ‘Ruh’ Soul? (Part 2)
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The Quran has come by inspiration to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The verse also says that what has come by inspiration is not all “mystical” knowledge, but only a little. However, another verse 5:3 says “This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”. The primary purpose of the revelation was therefore to give mankind the complete Deen or the Islamic way of life, while also giving us a little of the “mystical” knowledge on a need to know basis or to the extent we are capable of understanding using similitudes or allegorical language....

Islam and Mysticism: Is ‘Nafs’ Soul? (Part - 1)
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

What is mysticism without the soul? But do we have a soul? The primary meaning of "soul" in all religions and cultures is the non-material or “spiritual” part of our "true-self", with a consciousness and intelligence of its own, even without our body and without our brain, which does not die when our body dies, and perhaps existed even before we were born. No such thing exists nor is it recognized by Science or by the Quran. Even though such a concept of soul is illogical and unscientific, and there is no empirical evidence of its existence within us or within others, the belief in the existence of such a soul in all religions and cultures including among Muslims is very strong....

Who Are Those Who Will Believe And Those Who Will Not?
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

There are many people who show an unflinching determination to disregard half of the relevant evidence! In Psychology this is called cognitive bias where we pay attention only to facts that support our prejudices. Uncomfortable evidence that contradicts our theory causes what is called cognitive dissonance. An honest way of dealing with cognitive dissonance is to revise our opinion/theory taking the full facts of the case into consideration. Dishonest ways are by way of discounting, falsifying, or by ignoring altogether the evidence that does not suit our purpose.....

The Misrepresentation of the Quran through Mistranslation
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The major source of mistranslation of the Quran is the mistranslation by every translator of the Quran of the word “Kafaru” as “disbeliever”. A disbeliever is understood as “those who are not followers of Prophet Muhammad” although even this meaning of disbeliever is incorrect. The Quran does not use the word Kafaru in the sense of “disbeliever” even in a single verse! As a matter of fact, the Quran makes it unmistakably clear that Kafaru means not a disbeliever but one of the following:...

The Quran and the Golden Rule: ‘Do unto Others as You Would Have Them Do unto You’
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The Golden Rule differs from the maxim of reciprocity and is a unilateral moral commitment to the well-being of the other without the expectation of anything in return. In the Quran the Golden Rule is presented in its most refined form. We are asked to repel evil with what is good. It is conceivable that when wronged, we may think that the person who has caused us injury, or we ourselves in the same position, will not expect to be treated well, and may act according to such reasoning. The Quran gives no scope for such reasoning and instructs us to repel evil with what is good....

An Exposition of the Verse of Light (Ayat al-Nur)
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

One of the most beautiful and commented verses of the Qur’an is the verse of light (Ayat al-Nur), which exegetes, mystics and philosophers have all discussed, and about which they have offered opinions according to their understanding. Science and Religion
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

Speaking historically, belief without a good rational basis or evidence may have been a necessity in the past, but today, this is neither necessary nor a good thing. Today blind belief is more harmful than blind rejection but acceptance on a rational basis is not only good but indispensable to leading a truly “moral” life with values that are transcendental and not merely utilitarian.  Religion gave us concepts and moral principles that were far beyond the capacity of human minds to fully comprehend their utility and role in leap frogging their society on the scale of civilization....

The Morality or the Immorality of the Institution of Slavery and the Quranic Permission That Allowed Sex with Female Slaves
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

“The Qur'an, like the Old and the New Testaments, recognizes and regulates the practice of the institution of slavery. The Qur'anic legislation subsequently confirmed and elaborated in the Shariat Law, brought two major changes to ancient slavery with far-reaching effects. One was the presumption of freedom; the other, the ban on the enslavement of free persons except in strictly defined circumstances. The Arabs practiced a form of slavery, similar to that which existed in other parts of the ancient world. The Quran urges kindness to the slave (4:36; 9:60; 24:58) and recommends liberation of slaves by purchase or manumission….

The Ahadith That Distort The Message Of The Quran – Part Two
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

What about the Lakhs of Ahadith that were rejected by the compilers as unreliable? Did Imam Bukhari, Muslim, Dawood, Tirmidhi, Nasai and Ibn Maja insult the Prophet by rejecting hundreds of thousands of his reported sayings? If the answer is no, then there is no insult to the Prophet if anyone rejects every Hadith as unreliable. That is every person’s choice. Believing in the Ahadith is not an article of faith for a Muslim and indeed these Books were only compiled some 250 years after the death of the Prophet….

    Islamic Ideology

There isn’t a subject on which the Ahadith do not mislead vis-à-vis the clear message of the Quran whether it is war, divorce, female witnessing, inheritance, or even the hajj. In this article, we discuss one Hadith which is causing the greatest damage and is truly satanic in its scope. Consider the following Hadith:

The Tafseer of Ibn Kathir on verses 2:191 to 193 and 8:36 to 8:38 quotes a Hadith collected in the two Sahihs in which the Prophet (pbuh) is alleged to have said:

    «أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ، حَتَّى يَقُولُوا: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، فَإِذَا قَالُوهَا عَصَمُوا مِنِّي دِمَاءَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ، إِلَّا بِحَقِّهَا، وَحِسَابُهُمْ عَلَى اللهِ عَزَّ وَجَل»

(I was commanded to fight against the people until they proclaim, `There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.' If and when they say it, they will preserve their blood and wealth from me, except for its right (Islamic penal code), and their reckoning is with Allah, the Exalted and Most Honoured.)"...

A Complete Agenda for Reform in Islamic Theology
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

My articles seek to establish the truth and knock out the falsehood on which the terror mongers thrive. The problem however is that their ideology is not very different from the corrupted Islamic theology supported by the Ulema of all sects. The Politics of Religion and the Changing Concept of Shuhuda over the Years
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The great attraction of reformist movements has been the call to go back to the pristine Islam of the Prophet’s times and eschewing all Bid’at or innovation that has crept into the Religion of Islam. To my mind, the greatest Bid’at is the corruption in the meaning of Shuhuda to mean martyr followed by legitimizing suicide bombing through the use of the euphemism ‘martyrdom operations’ or ‘Amaliyat Istishhadiyaa’. While fighting in the cause of Allah (Qital Fi Sabilillah) is a command to fight oppression, there is no concept of “Martyrdom Operations”. A Muslim is asked to strive in the cause of Allah through peaceful means or through fighting against oppression in a just war but he is not asked to fight seeking martyrdom or to undertake martyrdom operations! Seeking martyrdom is a major Bid’at and a recent Shi’ite innovation achieved by reinterpreting the political killing of Hazrat Hussain (RA) as a deliberate act....

Are The Ahadith More Than Just Unreliable Hearsay?
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The damage that the Ahadith do is multi fold. Since the Ahadith are full of contradictions and sometimes utter nonsense, a Muslim learns early that he should not expect his religion to either be logical or make sense. The environment is created for domination by the Sheikh ul Hadiths! A religion of reason has been reduced to a cult of nonsensical mumbo jumbo. The Ahadith are used as Furqan or criterion to abrogate verses of the Quran – the ultimate blasphemy! …..

The faith is helped and strengthened by the five (including the sub categories) categoriesof people discussed on whom is Allah’s Grace. These are the role models to emulate for success in this life and in the Hereafter. Seeking to become Maqtul fi Sabilillah is neither part of any prayer in the Quran or Dua of our Prophet nor a worthwhile goal. The chances of being merely slain in an unjust fight can make us lose both this world and the Hereafter. The worthy goals of becoming one among the Siddiqin or the Shuhuda or the Salihin requires living a long life and doing enough good deeds to qualify for being admitted to these exalted ranks. There is no short cut to Heaven. All temptations and short cuts lead only to Hell……

In Search Of the Pillars of Islam
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The Siddiqin are mentioned ahead of the Shuhuda and must therefore rank higher than the Shuhuda. Who are the Siddiqin? They are not simply people who speak the truth because the Shuhuda also speak only the truth. They are the sincere and active seekers of the truth. The prophets were sincere seekers of the truth and this word is used to describe several of the prophets including Ibrahim (AS), Yusuf (AS), Idris (AS) and Mariam. The Prophets are also Shuhuda. While all prophets are Siddiq as well as Shuhuda, obviously not all Siddiq can also be called Shuhuda and vice versa. All Shuhuda are Siddiq but not necessarily to the required extent to be called Siddiq and vice versa.

The very same manner of referring to people who had been slain in the path of God as Maqtul Fi Sabil Allah continued to be followed in this period, too. But after this period, a change gradually emerged in the use of the term Shahadah, in the same way as changes began being made in the understanding of several other Islamic teachings, so much so that Muslims almost forgot that the term Shahadah meant Dawah and instead began to use the word as synonymous with martyrdom......

Remove the central pole and the tent collapses taking down the remaining five poles also. The five pillars of Islam are no less important because the central pole cannot stand by itself either. The five pillars however only provide the necessary hygiene factors and what is central to Islam that defines a true Muslim who is both a witness to Allah and witness to the people of the divine attributes of Allah to whom he submits, is the quality of justice he renders and upholds. We know from psychological studies the power of priming. A person who does an act of kindness before sex is primed for behaving kindly towards his wife. Also the admonishment to fear Allah and to know with certainty that they are to meet Allah eliminates every chance of cruelty or coercion. The verse doubly ensures that the sexual act will be with kindness and generosity and without cruelty or coercion. Also the requirement of fulfilling conditions  before sex, elevates the act itself to the status of  a precious gift from the Almighty which requires thanks to be shown by performing some good act even before enjoying the gift.....

Jiziya has no religious sanctity as proved by the fact that the Prophet himself did not implement it in the form it appears in 9:29. Verse 9:29 only proved to be an enabling mechanism for the Prophet to make the People of the Book in the territory in which he had become a political leader, agree to become willing subjects and pay tax for services rendered by the state. This was something he had failed to achieve as the political leader in Medina. ….

What Is Kufr And Who Is A Kafir In The Quran? (Full and Revised Text of the New Age Islam Series on the Subject)
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The Qu’ran has been mined to understand how the words Kafir and kufr (kufr is what makes a kafir or what a kafir does) have been used. It turns out that Sunni theology has erred grievously in treating all non-Muslim as kafir because the Quran does not do so. In verses that deal with the temporal dimension or this World, the Quran uses the word in a faith-neutral way. For example, miserliness is a form of kufr which clearly is a characteristic independent of one’s faith. There are “Muslims” who are niggardly and there are non-Muslims who spend freely in charity. ...

There is not a single verse in the entire Quran that directs the Muslims to treat people of other faiths with anything other than kindness and justice. The war is only against the Kafir among them for the exclusive Kufr of:

Those who fight the Muslims for their faith and drive them out of their homes.

Those who break their treaties and fight or aid other enemies of the Muslims

There is no verse in the Quran that asks the Muslims to fight with the kafir for any other form of kufr such as: Blasphemy, ridicule, rejecting faith etc. Surah 109 Al-Kafirun is explicit about living in peace with the peaceful Kafirun and ends with “(109:6) To you be your Way/religion, and to me mine.

Our ability for focusing or paying attention is also determined by our cognitive abilities or what our brain is able to make of the stimuli. Nowhere does the Quran say that a woman's testimony is worth half that of a man's. All that it says is that commercial deals be reduced to writing and duly witnessed. Even to this day, any document witnessed has two witnesses. The function of the witness is simply a safeguard against repudiation of the contract on the grounds that it was never executed and that it is a forgery. The witnesses then provide evidence that it was duly executed in their presence. The defendant and witnesses are cross examined to explore inconsistencies in their versions to try to prove that the event of execution of the document never took place. If the testimonies of the two witnesses differ, then the plaintiff has a good chance to repudiate the contract. …..

Why have Fatwas against Islamist Terrorism failed as A Counter-Terrorism Tool, Explains Sultan Shahin in a Conference in Birmingham, And Suggests the Kind of Fatwa Required

Numerous fatwas (edicts) have been issued by ulema (Islamic scholars) across the globe, particularly since 9/11 in a bid to stem the tide of Islamist terrorism. Tens of thousands of ulema have endorsed these fatwas issued by influential institutions of Islamic learning of all sects in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh as well as other parts of the world. When issued, these fatwas inspired great expectations. As perceptive and insightful an observer as Mr. Ziauddin Sardar proclaimed “the beginning of the end of the war of terror” when a hundred thousand Deobandi ulema endorsed a fatwa issued by the hundred-year-old Islamic madrasa in Deoband, India, “unequivocally denouncing terrorism,” in June 2008. Similarly, Sufism-oriented Barailwis, hard-line Salafis, Ahl-e-Hadeesis, have all denounced Islamist terrorism in their separate or joint statements. But terrorist ideology continues to attract our youth, particularly in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. What used to be merely a Pakistan-sponsored secessionist struggle is showing signs of tuning into an Islamist struggle for the establishment of Islamic Sharia through a universal Caliphate, very much redolent of the objectives of the so-called Islamic State or ISIS.  Popularizing the slogan of “Shariatya Shahadat,” a militant leader Zakir Musa, Burhan Wani’s successor, even threatened to kill Hurriyat leaders for calling Kashmir’s separatist movement political and not religious. Calling them “hypocrites, infidels, followers of evil”, the militant had warned to chop off their heads to be hanged in Lal Chowk in Srinagar, “if they create hurdles in the path of making Kashmir an Islamic State”....
