Many people might think that mosques are no place for drug addiction treatment, but those responsible for setting up a noteworthy drug treatment clinic in a mosque think it can be done – and are demonstrating the importance of religious leaders tackling social problems at the same time. Faced with the need to provide drug addiction treatment services for drug users living in nearby low-cost housing areas that were both inexpensive and accessible to the community, the UMCAS team hit upon the idea of using mosques as service delivery points....

Abdul-Hakim al-Hasadi first took up arms nearly 20 years ago to try to bring Islamic law to Libya. He studied under the Taliban in Afghanistan, Abdul-Hakim al-Hasadi, a Jihadi turned politician, says, “There is no reason for weapons now.”  But now Mr. Hasadi has refashioned himself as an eager politician running for local office, looking to the ballot box to promote his Islamic values. “There is no reason for weapons now,” he said. “Words are our weapons. Politics needs politics. It doesn’t need force.”....

Revelations that top officials are targeting people to be assassinated abroad, including American citizens, are only the most recent, disturbing proof of how far our nation’s violation of human rights has extended. This development began after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and has been sanctioned and escalated by bipartisan executive and legislative actions, without dissent from the general public. As a result, our country can no longer speak with moral authority on these critical issues. …

With leadership from the United States, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in 1948 as “the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.” This was a bold and clear commitment that power would no longer serve as a cover to oppress or injure people, and it established equal rights of all people to life, liberty, security of person, equal protection of the law and freedom from torture, arbitrary detention or forced exile.

The declaration has been invoked by human rights activists and the international community to replace most of the world’s dictatorships with democracies and to promote the rule of law in domestic and global affairs. It is disturbing that, instead of strengthening these principles, our government’s counterterrorism policies are now clearly violating at least 10 of the declaration’s 30 articles, including the prohibition against “cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” …

Can celebrity and fashion save Pakistan from its dark image? “We’re not out to save the world,”.... “But this is a starting point, to show that we’re not all a bunch of terrorists with beards.” “Its life within the bubble,” said Shakir Husain, a software entrepreneur who set up Fashionist as against the Taliban, a satirical Facebook group that has acquired cult status in Pakistani social media. “And that bubble is filled with self-congratulatory nonsense.”....

ترکی میں  ہر جگہ گولین کے اسکول ہیں اور سب سے بہتر سمجھے جاتے ہیں۔  جہاں  لاکھوں ڈالر کی  ہائی ٹیک سہولیات ہیں اور جہاں لڑکیاں لڑکوں کے برابر ہیں اور انگریزی پہلی جماعت میں ہی پڑھانا شروع کیاجاتا ہے۔  گولین نے صرف  تعلیمی شعبہ کو ہی متاثر نہیں  کیا ہے۔  ایک نوجوان امام  کے طور پر  60 کی دہائی میں شروعات کرتے ہوئے انہوں نے متوسط  طبقے کے ترکوں کے پر زور دیا کہ وہ مغرب سے سیکھیں اور اس کے اقدار کو گلے لگائیں۔  جن میں سے ایک غیر متوقع طور پر پیسہ کمانا بھی شامل تھا۔  اپنے انٹرنیٹ پر دئے خطبہ میں بھی انہوں نے اپنے پیروکاروں کو بتایا کہ: "اگر آپ امیر ہونے کے  طریقوں کی تلاش میں نہیں ... تو خدا کی نظر میں یہ  ایک گناہ ہے۔"

اسی طرح اللہ قرآن میں ان لوگوں کی آخرت میں سخت  گرفت کا اعلان کرتا ہے جو بغیر کسی سند کے اس کے اور فرشتوں کے متعلق بیہودہ باتیں اختراع کرتے ہیں۔ وہ ان پر لطیف طنز بھی کرتا ہے کہ انہیں کس طرح معلوم کہ فرشتے عورتیں ہیں؟  کیا جب انہیں تخلیق کیا جارہا تھا اس وقت وہ وہاں کھڑے دیکھ رہے تھے؟ اسی طرح اللہ جنوں سے اس کا رشتہ جوڑ نے پر بھی ناراضگی کا اظہار کرتا ہے: ‘‘ او رٹھہرایا ہے انہوں نے خدا اور جنّوں میں ناتا ’’۔ ( الصّٰفات:158)

दरअसल ख़ुदा और बन्दों में बाप और बेटे का रिश्ता यहूदियों के ज़हन की उपज है। यहूदी अपने पैग़ंबर हज़रत उज़ैर अलैहिस्सलाम को ख़ुदा का बेटा कहते थे। (हज़रत उज़ैर अलैहिस्सलाम की उम्मत को भी यहूदी कहा जाता है)। ऐसा वो दूसरे पैग़ंबरों पर अपने पैग़ंबर की बरतरी ज़ाहिर करने के लिए करते थे। फिर उन्होंने अक़्वामे आलम पर अपनी बरतरी और फ़ज़ीलत ज़ाहिर करने के लिए ख़ुद को ख़ुदा का बेटा कहना शुरू किया यानी सारे यहूदी ख़ुदा के बेटे हैं और इसीलिए ख़ुदा के महबूब हैं।

तुर्की में हर जगह गोलेन के स्कूल हैं और सबसे बेहतर समझे जाते हैं। जहां लाखों डालर की हाईटेक सहूलियात हैं और जहां लड़कियां लड़कों के बराबर हैं और अंग्रेज़ी पहली जमात में ही पढ़ाना शुरू किया जाता है। गोलेन ने सिर्फ तालीमी शोबा को ही मुतास्सिर नहीं किया है। एक नौजवान इमाम के तौर पर 60 की दहाई में शुरूआत करते हुए उन्होंने मुतवस्सित तब्क़े के तुर्कों के ऊपर ज़ोर दिया कि वो मग़रिब से सीखें और उसके इक़दार को गले लगाऐं। जिनमें से एक ग़ैर मोतवक़्क़े तौर पर पैसा कमाना भी शामिल था।

Although bizarre, such incidents are no longer rare. Many Muslim women are willing to compromise on everything from vacations in Europe to education and occupation rather than give up the face veil, or hijab. No doubt they consider wearing the hijab a religious duty, and a supreme one at that. The significance accorded to the hijab fits into the larger context of a woman’s position in conservative Muslim society today. It is argued that as the word for woman, عورة, means a thing worthy of being hidden, she must cover herself from head to toe at all times.....

Unfortunately for bilateral relations, two of the strategic priorities that the Bush Administration saw as part of its foreign policy legacy had a direct bearing on Russian interests: drawing Georgia and Ukraine into the NATO orbit and deploying missile defence systems in Eastern Europe. The August 2008 war in South Ossetia was a logical consequence of the attempts to translate these priorities to reality. ...

The current wave of Islamic extremism has its roots in an ideology known as Wahhabism. The Al-Qaeda, Salafis, Taliban and other radical groups are setting off suicide bombs and killing innocent civilians to make political statements. In Iraq, Pakistan and other places these groups are killing anyone who they consider part of their opposition, especially, Sufis and moderate Shias who are traditionally peace-loving Muslims....

حضرت علی رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں ‘‘اللہ تعالیٰ نے اہل دولت کے اموال پر ان کے غریب بھائیوں کی معاشی حاجت کو بدرجۂ کفایت پورا کرنا فرض کردیاہے، پس اگر وہ بھوکے ننگے  یا معاشی مصائب میں مبتلا  ہوں گے محض اس بنا پر کہ اہل ثروت اپنا حق ادا نہیں  کرتے تو اللہ تعالیٰ ان سے قیامت کے دن اس کی باز پرس کرے گا اور اس کوتاہی  پر ان کو عذاب دے گا’’۔

Comparison with India would invite ire from the informed as well as uninformed segments of the population a few years back, but the steady improvement of relations or willingness to live with fine-tuned misunderstandings and mutual hostility no longer provokes anger or leads to suspicion. Comparison is always healthy as it brings to the fore the counterfactual facts and reasoning, jolting the brain to think and prodding the brawn to act....

इस्लाम तक़्सीमे दौलत की एख़्लाक़ी हिदायत ही नहीं देता बल्कि क़ानूनी हुक्म देता है, सरमायादाराना, जागीरदाराना और सरदाराना सोच और अमल की नफ़ी करता है, दौलत को राहे ख़ुदा में ख़र्च करने का हुक्म देता है,  इर्तेकाज़ दौलत की मज़म्मत करता है, वो मुआशरती और मआशी निज़ाम जिसमें 98 फ़ीसद मख़लूक़े ख़ुदा दौलत के दीदार से तरसते हों और दो फ़ीसद पर बिन बादल दौलत की बरसात होती हो, ऐसा मुआशरा इस्लामी हरगिज़ नहीं हो सकता।

When it comes to women’s rights in Pakistan, we have to fight first for their human rights. Particularly what makes the Pakistani woman vulnerable is the pervasiveness of religion in every part of civic life including the law and state. Armed with the fallacy that women are the honour of the tribe/country, men reign over them and decree all sorts of punishments. Although death is the extreme form of that, an equally harrowing punishment is seclusion and segregation, where their right to mobility is curtailed. When a woman cannot move, she certainly cannot run….

The caption must be shocking to all the Muslims regardless of their sect and theological orientations as the Muslims world over conflate their universal religion of Islam with its five pillars. But as they read through the article, they will, if God may guide them, see how their literalist and obsessive devotion to the five pillars of faith has led to their detachment from the wellspring of Qur’anic guidance and virtually reduced them to a cult.

During his lifetime, the Prophet took oath of allegiance from those who wished to enter Islam. The oath, crowned by faith in God and His Prophet, included a set of pledges that were tailored to the immediate priorities of the community. These pledges were regarded as the pillars of faith. They epitomized the essence of faith as well as the key duties of the converts as fresh members of the upcoming Muslim community. They, however, did not represent the summation of God’s word – the Qur’anic revelation that the scribes were recording and the huffaz were memorizing. As the priorities of the Muslim community were changing with time, the introductory pledges or pillars were also changing. ...
