As an instance, both India and Bangladesh have adopted a common stance on tackling terrorism through not only cracking down on the purveyors of terror but also keeping at arm’s length, and in fact condemning, nations regarded as sponsors of terrorism in the region....

He says beards, head scarves and other public displays of religiosity are incidental to Islam. We spoke in the library of his home, with high shelves of Arabic and French scholarship above us. Oubrou told me cheerfully that political Islam had been a “total failure” and that Islam in general was in need of a fundamental rethinking, so that people could stop “trying to turn themselves into seventh-century Arabs.” The Quran, he said, was a “point of departure and not a point of arrival.”...

Faiz, being a fellow traveller of Communist party treaded on every path beginning from imprisonment to exile and even suffered the scare of gallows. A threat of death is worse than the real death. With superb qualification, exquisite poetry and a western wife he could have lived a comfortable life. Instead, for a greater cause he and Ellis preferred to choose a life of suffering and pain....

Doctors in my group on the ground in Syria have been reviewing the symptoms of the affected patients and medical personnel from the recent attacks. We are worried that a new phosphorus chemical agent is being used in chemical weapons, in addition to the identifiable chlorine. Some of the patients have exhibited symptoms similar to the effects of a nerve gas: pinpoint pupils, foaming at the mouth and the loss of consciousness, slow heart rate, slow breathing, vomiting and muscles spasms....

There was a time when all the souls from Adam’s progeny yet to be born were bought forth, “When thy Lord drew forth from the children of Adam — from their loins — their descendants, and made them testify concerning themselves, (saying): ‘Am I not your Lord (who cherishes and sustains you)?’ — they said: ‘Yes! We do testify!’ This, lest ye should say on the Day of Judgment: ‘Of this we were never mindful.’”...

In essence, I’tekaf refers to the act of residing in a mosque for a period of three days or more, during which an individual seeks closeness to Allah (swt) by performing various A’mal (rituals) and refraining from a number of prohibited acts. It may sound simple, but there is a beauty to I’tekaf that makes it so special compared to other rituals in Islam.....

As part of the deal in 2013 to end Syria’s chemical weapons programme, both America and Russia promised to punish the Syrian regime should it use chemical weapons again. Despite evidence of the regime’s repeated use of chlorine gas since then, neither side has honoured this promise. ....

India’s Civil Code Tinderbox
Moin Qazi, New Age Islam

Sir Muhammad Iqbal wrote, “In view of the intense conservatism of the Muslims of India, Indian judges cannot but stick to what are called standard works. The result is that while the people are moving, the law remains stationary.” To those opposed to reformist ideals, let us remind them of legendary poet Iqbal’s assertion: “[t]he teaching of the Quran that life is a process of progressive creation necessitates that each generation, guided but unhampered by the work of its predecessors, should be permitted to solve its own problems.”....

As a matter of fact, much like the Bhakti tradition in Hinduism, Sufism in Islam has always been a glue for harmony and social affinity in India. As long as Hindus and Muslims followed the universal values and the essential ideals of Sufism or Bhaktimat, religious discord did not prevail in the country. But both seem to have lost their spiritual paths under the influence of the political motives.....

Government forces have been herding defeated opponents from across the country into Idlib Province, where the chemical attack occurred. Starved and bombed out of their enclaves, they are bused under lopsided surrender deals to the province, where Qaeda-linked groups maintain a presence the Syrian military uses as an excuse to bomb without regard for the safety of civilians....

The struggle over the head scarf is part of a broader effort by the French state, which harbours a quaint ambition to reach some sort of grand bargain with Islam as it did with the Catholic Church in 1905. That arrangement nowhere mentioned the word laïcité, but it reset the boundaries between church and state, reining in church influence in the public sphere and appropriating most ecclesiastical property. This is far more difficult to do with Muslims in France, who are extremely diverse, with no equivalent to the Catholic hierarchy....

Meanwhile, deaths among Christians in Europe are far outstripping births. In Germany, between 2010 and 2015, there were an estimated 1.4m more deaths than births among Christians. Pew said the pattern was expected to continue across much of Europe in the decades ahead....

After the attacks, some Daesh-related websites have shown its supporters celebrating the attacks — an ISIS supporter on the group’s al-Minbar platform wrote: “We ask Allah to bless the operation by the lions of the Caliphate, we ask Allah to kill the Crusaders.” Another claimed that the attacks were revenge for Russia’s attacks on Daesh in Syria. As the Islamic State collapses in the Levant, its lethal tentacles have reached across several thousand kilometres to wreak vengeance upon its enemies. This has grim portends for the world after the fall of Mosul and Raqqa.....

The improvement of Muslim societies on the global scale of scientific advancements and human development cannot be effectively achieved by externally imposed factors. The real improvement will only come through initiatives within Muslim societies and through realisation, awareness and the desire to advance alongside the progressive world. Today’s world will not slow down for Muslims. The sooner the Muslim societies embark on this journey, the sooner they can attain the required pace for advancement. Otherwise they will be left behind and will need centuries to catch up...

In fact, every organ in one’s body has levels of faith which one needs to obtain. Allah has prescribed faith to each organ that is distinct from each other. One organ may have faith whilst the other may not. For example one may not commit the sin of back biting on his tongue, but his mind if full of suspicions and doubts. Interestingly,  It is said that the ‘Aql (intellect) is the prince of your organs, which means if one wants to conquer his body, he must strive to control and make the mind and heart submissive first....
