Blasphemy: Intolerance Prevails From Russia to Pakistan

For the majority of us tolerance is not something we are born with. Intolerance, on the other hand, seems to come to us naturally, like aggression or desire, and manifests against that which is different or against our vested interests. To Pakistan, the story of intolerance is not new – we persecute any one whose beliefs are differentness from the mainstream ones....

Syrian Crisis Cold War’s Afghan Mujahedeen Era Is Back but Now Ground Zero Is Not Afghanistan

As thousands of Sunni terrorists from Britain, the Arab world, the Maghreb, and South Asia converged on the outskirts of Syria’s most populous city, Aleppo, planning a violent confrontation, the Syrian military was poised to counter the terrorist offensive. According to some analysts, the battle for Aleppo is a decisive one for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad....

Are Pakistanis Extremists?

THERE are two ways of effecting a change in a society: from top to bottom or from bottom to top. Conventionally, it has been believed — and development and political strategies are based on this notion — that changes at the top and the trickle-down effect will create an impact at the bottom, where it is needed. This means that any change in mindset comes about in a small class which the leaders can afford to ignore….

The Power of One Can Move a Mountain, Literally

The future of our nation depends on whether we decide to be determined followers of dreams or cynical naysayers. What can I do alone? I am just one among 1.2 billion. Even if I change, what good will it do? What about the rest? Who will change everyone? First get everyone else to change then I too will change. These are some of the most negative thoughts I have heard all through my life….

Squabbling About a Name: Reflections on Religious Exclusivism

The next time you spot a Hindu, make it a point to greet him with a ‘Salaam!’, and wish the next Muslim you see with ‘Shanti!’ I’ll bet you they both would be horrified, shocked, or, at least, visibly uncomfortable. The Hindu might think you’ve mistaken him for a Muslim by Salaam-ing him and the Muslim might think you’ve hurt his feelings by using a ‘Hindu’ term to greet him!...

In Hiroshima’s Shadow

None were more shocked by the discovery of missiles in Cuba than the men in charge of the similar missiles that the U.S. had secretly deployed in Okinawa six months earlier, surely aimed at China, at a moment of elevated regional tensions. In brief, even at high risk of war of unimaginable destruction, it was felt necessary to reinforce the principle that U.S. has the unilateral right to deploy nuclear missiles anywhere.....

(Yoga Vashishta Tr. Prince Dara Shikoh - 20)

Yoga Vashishta, Translated from Sanskrit into Persian by Prince Mohammad Dara Shikoh
