In the final analysis, the ban on the Burqa is a one sided debate. Muslim women- the object of the ban- have effectively been excluded from it. However I, as a Muslim woman, would like to put my point across: before speaking in my name, and trying to liberate me from the age old practice and supposedly orthodox traditional interpretations of the verses of Qur’an, I would like to point out and affirm that I reserve the right to what I wear!....

The Christian boy from Bosnia had grown up to rule the Muslim world. Not everyone liked this arrangement, least of all the Ottoman Sultanas, whose power was on the rise towards the end of this period, especially after Selim II was succeeded by his son Murad III, a handover again overseen by Sokollu, who remained Grand Vizier....

But Pakistanis are anxious given that 20% of the population are Shia, there are large numbers of Shia officers and soldiers in the army - which has never faced sectarian unrest - and memories of the horrors of the 1980s when Saudi Arabia and Iran were accused of fighting a proxy war on Pakistani soil live on. Each state, it was alleged, funded and supported militant Sunnis and Shia respectively in Pakistan to kill each other.....

It is known that the majority of Deoband scholars are not comfortable with the changing political scenario, which is increasingly becoming anti-extremist and anti-sectarian. They are conservative in their approaches and incapable of responding to the challenge posed by the extremists and terrorists. The real challenge is the extremist arguments that underpin the terrorists’ violent acts. These arguments refute the modern-day concept of nation-based citizenship and call for a pan-Islamic statehood.....

She first quotes Iqbal (whose suggestion that elected Parliament should be able to complement Ulema’s work and exercise Ijtihad appears shockingly modernist).“The law revealed by the Prophet takes special notice of the habits, ways and peculiarities of the people to whom he is specifically sent. The sharia values [ahkam] are in a sense specific to that people; and since their observance is not an end in itself they cannot be strictly enforced in the case of future generations....

This call for moderation and communal harmony was enough for Alimi and his backers to seek to grab the seat of the Sajjadanashin, which by the rights established by tradition would go to son Naseeruddin Chisti after the passing away of Sayid Zainul Abedin. The contest that is taking place at the Ajmer dargah is of relevance to the whole of India, for the substitution of the present Sajjadanashin by an individual who does not share his peace-loving values would mark a grievous defeat for modern and moderate Muslims across India, indeed across the world....

Not to mention that Islam as a civilization has always been characterized by multiculturalism, rather than by nativism. A fact that is true even for pathological groups such as the Islamic State (IS) movement. One thing we all know well is how easy such nativist claims can be turned into legitimacy for violence, and that within multicultural and multireligious Indonesia, none of us reserve the right to present our respective identities as “the true Indonesia.”...

“If you’ve read the Qur'an, then you can find the solution there itself. There is no such rule in Qur'an. They have just made it up.... You read the Qur'an in Arabic and but you don’t read the translation. You accept whatever the Maulanas (clerics) or the Mullas say. Read the Qur'an and Hadith and see what Rasool (Prophet Muhammad) had said”. Thus, Salma Ansari tried to ignite a flame of desire in the Muslim women to comprehend the Qur'an by themselves and introspect on its texts related to the talaq. Notably, a complete and comprehensive chapter (Surah) in the Qur'an is named as "al-Talaq".....

This thinking is rooted in a failure to understand the difference between Islamists — a sizable but distinct minority of Muslims who adhere to a radical utopian ideology — and the majority of Muslims, among whom are found friends and allies. President el-Sisi, who has publicly called out extremism to clerics in Egypt, understands this. After all, Egypt is not the only state in which the Brotherhood engaged in attempts to kill its way to power. It did the same in Syria in the early 1980s.....

The use of suicide explosions in Bangladesh's intensifying struggle between Government Forces and Islamist extremists started on December 24, 2016, when a teenage boy and a woman had blown themselves up with suicide vests during a Police raid on a Neo-JMB hideout in the capital, Dhaka, to avoid arrest. Indeed, there is increasing evidence of desperation in terrorist actions...

“Architecture is central to Islam because it represents a formalization of virgin nature; it is symbolic of the highest place of worship created by God. Architecture is seen as the art of ordering space not only on a physical level but also on the metaphysical plane-placing man in the presence of God through the sacralisation of space.”...

The Earth is green and beautiful, and Allah has appointed you his stewards over it. The whole Earth has been created a place of worship, pure and clean. Whoever plants a tree and diligently looks after it until it matures and bears fruit is rewarded. If a Muslim plants a tree or sows a field and humans and beasts and birds eat from it, all of it is love on his part....

Today we cannot see any sign of Makkah’s history. As a result we have to tell our children that a battle had been fought at the place of this mall or an important incident had taken place during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) below that flyover or a companion of the Prophet fell martyr fighting the infidels near this tower or a group of Muslims took oath of allegiance near this hotel.....

The fact that these bloody stories are mostly coming from Muslim countries and that al-Qaeda and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) are made up of Muslims gives me huge pain. While thinking over them, the basic question should be this: Why can’t Muslims solve their own issues? Is it because of the crusade alliance or imperialism?   But it was the Muslims themselves who removed “philosophy” lessons from the madrasa. ...

In various Islamic discourses, the term ‘Ilm appears very frequently both in the Qur’ān and the Hadith. ‘Ilm derived from the root word ‘-l-m means the cognitive understanding of a particular thing and thereafter its acquisition. The terms like ‘Ilm, Hikmah, Ma‘rifah, Fiqh etc―and their verbs and verbal derivatives―time and again find their representation in Qur’ān and Ḥadi̇̄th that further adds to the characteristic beauty of ‘Ilm.....

A Case for Moderating Islam
Moin Qazi, New Age Islam

If Prophet Muhammad's life was revolutionary, its aftermath has seen a monological recital of Hadiths and inflexible analyses of Qur'anic verses, where historical context is taken up or ignored to suit the interpreter. Memories of early Islam have hardened into dogma, and many scholars have taken the Hadiths as tablets of stone. One of the greatest jolts to progressive thinking in Islam came from the colonial powers .The onslaught of this wave of Western wave of enlightenment and renaissance shattered the Islamic psyche.....

One of the least reported yet most significant developments of the Trump administration's foreign policy has been its warm embrace of the ultra-conservative, theocratic Saudi monarchy. Immediately after he entered office, Trump made a pact with Saudi Arabia to escalate aggression in Yemen.  After a friendly White House meeting with Trump and Steve Bannon, the architect of Trump's Muslim ban, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman hailed Trump as “his Excellency,”...
