Vilified by accusations of using a chemical bomb, Syria’s president intensified his counterpropaganda campaign on Thursday, suggesting that child actors had staged death scenes to malign him and that American warplanes had bombed a terrorist warehouse full of poison gases, killing hundreds of people....

A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia and backed by Western nations, which sides with the president, Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, is finalising plans to invade and take the port. An attack is imminent, say UN observers. A successful raid could push rebel forces—a combination of Shia revivalists, Houthis and soldiers loyal to the former president....

This year – which marks 50 years of occupation, 10 years of the siege of Gaza strip and 100 years since the Balfour declaration – is an apt time for Britain to redress this century-old wrong, to work to end occupation and create an independent, sovereign Palestine. Otherwise the region will continue to be destabilised for years to come. Britain will be haunted by the consequences of Israel’s conduct, and its own complicity with it....

Picture this: A group of well-mannered, middle-aged men and women are travelling to the picturesque Aegean town of Ayvalik as the mosque’s loudspeakers announce, “Strangers have entered our village, do not open your doors.” Members of the secular nongovernmental organization (NGO) Ataturkist Thought Association experienced this April 4 as they approached the town to talk to the residents about the upcoming referendum. They were the ones the imam called strangers.....

It is this heritage which need to be rediscovered, revived and celebrated, not the violent caricature we often see around us, the latest example being the lynching of an innocent citizen by goons, claiming to protect the sacred cow,. If allowed together pace, these negative trends will, sooner or later, overwhelm the pursuit of modernity. Riding two horses at the same time is difficult enough even when they are running in the same direction let alone when they are pulling in very different directions.....

Now the likes of Abu ‘Ali who had emerged from the mosques calling for the removal of Assad, facing live bullets after Friday prayers were lectured to by Abu so-and-so al-Britani who, only six months ago, was checking out some winding girl’s batty rider in some funked up club. Here came Abu so-and-so to the land of Muslim scholarship and lectured the people on the intricacies of kufr, Taghut, Tawheed and the incompatibility of Islamic theology with democracy. Syrians didn’t need lessons in creed. They wanted to stop the barrel bombs from killing their children.....

The Qur'an is not a work of literary narrative, as is the Bible. As a scripture that provides guidance (Huda) and a reminder (Tadhkira) to humankind, it gives more emphasis to spiritual edifications than to providing a full account of facts. So, the Quran's main concern with the Jesus story, too, is not to give a full account of the Jesus story, but rather to put it in the right theological perspective......

Terms like myth, value, morality, religion, faith, atheism etc. suffer from certain imprecision in modern treatment. One might read Glossary of Terms used by Frithjof Schuon for more precise and traditionally grounded treatment. However, Khawja is more lucid for most of modern educated people. One can only thank him for formulating these theses. He is bound to receive more attention if Muslims are to more creatively engage with modernity....

At this moment, let us understand that Islam, like other Abrahamic religions, is a religion of books. Hence, who reads the books, and how, becomes critical to the manner in which the religion will manifest itself in practice. Texts are nothing without readers, and instead of looking at the words, it would be worthwhile to look at the people who are reading these texts, not just to themselves but also to their followers....

Finally, when the King was marching in his New Clothes it was a little ‘Malala’ in the crowd to shout, ‘the King has no clothes.’ On April 13 in the Parliament of Canada the real Malala of this era – not afraid of anyone, said aloud what the Ulema and scholars of Islam have been afraid to say: “when you pick up a gun in the name of Islam and kill innocent people, you are not a Muslim anymore.”….

A “yes” vote would overhaul the state in its present form, abolishing the post of prime minister, sidelining parliament, and formalising a system in which the president answers no one except voters. A “no” would mark a major setback for Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president, though far from a fatal one. Yet there is much more riding on the outcome than one man’s political fortunes. What is at stake?...

The police officers came to the doctor’s door in Istanbul at 6 a.m. — dawn raids usually start then, sometimes 5:30 — and one of them said, “You are accused of attempting to kill President Erdogan.” The doctor couldn’t help it; he laughed. “Really? I did that?” The police officers smiled, too. “Yes. Also for attempting to destroy Turkey and for being a member of a terrorist organization.” “Really?” He looked at them. They carried pistols. “Can I have a cigarette then?” The police seemed surprised. They didn’t expect a Gulenist to smoke. I’m not a Gulenist, the doctor insisted. That didn’t help him......\

As power came from a deniable jihad, religious parties could afford to rest on the margins. But now, as the state of Pakistan reacts against the jihadi “recoil”, two terrorist-declared outfits are ready to become political parties, hoping to secure more votes at the polls than the Jamaat-e-Islami....

Perhaps just like the French Paratroopers who learnt much from the Communists and applied the lessons with deadly effect in Algeria, Abu Bakr too learnt things in Camp Bucca and applied it to deadly affect. He certainly learnt how to put people in orange jump suits. When he emerged, he experienced the intensity of asymmetric warfare, he learnt that stuffing bombs inside corpses and dogs were effective, how to create grey zones by dividing Sunnis from Shi’ites.....

The character of Ranjha in the legendary story has uncanny similarities with Krishna. To woo his love, Ranjha becomes a cowherd – in his childhood, Krishna is depicted as a cowherd, Gopala. And just as Krishna’s flute has an irresistible impact upon maidens, Ranjha too is adept at playing the flute and this is what draws Heer to him....

Wahhabism became an attractive alternative to the mystic ideology of Sufi Islam. It all of a sudden seemed too complicated for the people. Wahhabism became especially appealing to the militarized youth, who were seeking out their personal identities and place in the national movement....

Because the Qur’an is filled with beautiful Arabic poetry; it is not surprising that the the Qur’an is also filled so many beautiful names of God. Because the Jewish tradition reaches back more than thirty five centuries; it is not surprising that Jews have focused on many additional names for God over those many centuries. Yet, because all the many names of God, call upon the same One God, it is also not surprising that many of the 99 beautiful names of God in Muslim tradition also appear in Jewish tradition....

Clearly, the procedure laid down in the laws of these Muslim-majority countries seems to be in harmony with the well-known Quranic procedure of Talaq, which was also enshrined and exhorted by the Prophet. As far as Iran and its strict Shariah laws are concerned, since it is the Shiite-majority country in the Muslim world, triple Talaq doesn’t have a validity whatsoever.....

Scientific and Qur’anic Concept of Death
Kazi Wadud Nawaz, New Age Islam

Death is not a journey towards an unknown destination.  From religious point of view death is the starting point of a journey predestined and pre-planned by Allah (swt) for traversing eternal life-cycle of mankind from the life on earth to Hereafter. The Journey – its Route and Destination have been clearly chalked out in the Holy Quran and pin-pointed by the Holy Prophet (PBU) thousand and one times. So there is no scope for a Muslim to deny it. It’s a journey from Finite to Infinite and from mixed domain in worldly life to the spiritual domain of Here-after....
