How Britain reacted to its Westminster tragedy speaks volumes for how we can defeat Islamic State-inspired terrorism in the social media age. Hours after the attack, British Prime Minister Theresa May’s calm and unifying words set the tone for the country. “The terrorists chose to strike at the heart of our capital city, where people of all nationalities, religions and cultures come together to celebrate the values of liberty, democracy and freedom of speech,” she said, ending with: “We will all move forward together.....

People who interact with the Muslims have better understanding of the faith and its practices. A woman wearing Hijab is not a suppressed one. She is following her faith to be dressed modestly. Some Muslims asking for accommodation during the month of fasting are not being unreasonable. They are willing to do extra duties later on. If we politely decline to drink alcohol during celebrations, we are not being disrespectful....

Shah Hussain’s union with his beloved, the young Hindu boy Madho Lal, also exemplifies this love. Consumed by their passion, their individual identities dissolved and emerged Madho Lal Hussain. They are now always referred in conjunction. One cannot exist without the other....

Honour the Baluch
Akbar Ahmed

"A Baluch woman dressed in her wedding finery and wearing all her jewellery could walk alone from one end of Baluchistan to the other end without ever being molested." Baluch elders said this in response to a query on Baloch character while sitting with the-then Balochistan's Chief Minister, Jam Mir Qadir Khan of Las Bela. The image struck me as a metaphor; a literal sociological reflection on contemporary Pakistan. It has stayed with me ever since....

Sufism emerged shortly after the birth of Islam in the seventh-century Middle East. It is rooted in the ascetics who rejected worldliness in early Islamic practice and meditated on the words of the Quran. Sufis believe love — as opposed to a fear of hell or desire for heaven — should inspire religious devotion....

Maajid Nawaz’s Radical Ambition
Thomas Chatterton Williams

On one hand, it’s a distillation of his larger rhetorical project, capturing the confused and painful textures of contemporary Muslim experience that can lead to the embrace of Islamism: an initial lack of familiarity with religion; local grievance spun into a narrative of global victimization; a tribal relation to other Muslims beyond racial and ethnic categorization; the illusion of empowerment through threat of violence. ...

When Pakistan’s most sickeningly pathological terrorist Fazlullah killed 130 children in a school in Peshawar, he quoted from the Hadith which form a part of Sharia in Islam. Pushed back by Sharia, Sharif took himself to Karachi last year where he mixed with the Hindu minority community and made them happy by observing Holi with them....

Faith (Iman) begins with the recognition of the truth in the heart (Qalb). Faith (Iman) is linked with the spiritual, inner dimensions, particularly the heart. It is when the knowledge obtained has been tied to ones existence (Wujood). It also explains why matters which require faith, in Islam are called عقاءد Aqaid.....

Scholars have the primary role of teaching the creed and sciences of the religion, which includes enjoining the good and forbidding the evil in society. Just because scholars or Shuyookh are not all out “in the streets” protesting or practicing civil disobedience by getting arrested, does not make them illegitimate nor should take away from the deference given to them. Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy upon him) and Malik bin Anas (may Allah have mercy upon him) were not out “in the streets” but gave moral support to those “in the streets.”...

Masood’s act has already been pinned on ISIS, and ISIS has already adopted him as one of its combatants. Both decisions are self-serving—the one to deny any native role for the production of Masood and the other to uplift a flagging insurgency. Masood’s own convulsions with racism, his own desire to seek glory above his miserable situation: these are not taken seriously. “Home-grown” terrorists have ‘home-grown’ problems. But the term ‘terrorist’ allows the “home-grown” person to be exported—as it were—to other countries, to defer blame to them—to ISIS, in this case....

To embrace an alliance that excludes Iran, Iraq, and Syria is a political message wrapped in a sectarian bow. Pakistan’s success is defined by its neutrality: a parliamentary democracy siding with neither Sunni kings nor Shia theocrats. Second, a Khaleeji vanity project is the wrong vehicle to be fighting IS and affiliates anyway. As Kamel Daoud puts it, “Daesh [IS] has a mother: the invasion of Iraq. But it also has a father: Saudi Arabia and its religious-industrial complex.” The kingdom may make the right noises, but it refuses to go after the radical trends it has encouraged for decades....

The Class X student, who made her Bollywood singing debut for the Sonakshi Sinha- starrer Akira recently, wept, murmuring that she couldn’t live without singing. “It (my singing) is the gift of Allah. I should properly utilise it, otherwise God will mind it,” said the 16-year-old Nahid, asserting that she would not bow to any diktat and continue practising the music with overwhelming support from the people of Assam in particular and India in general....

However, an often-overlooked casualty of this fear mongering is the roughly 47 million Muslims living and working peacefully in Western countries. Many Muslims feel increasingly pressured to differentiate themselves from those individuals seen committing the atrocities we’ve sadly become accustomed to, even going so far as to hide the extent to which they practice Islam, or the fact that they’re Muslim at all from their co-workers.....

Terror groups abusing the name of Islam want to attack and destroy Sufi establishments, which still stand for love and tolerance. Sufis dedicated themselves to the love of God, which in turn meant love for all His creations—translating into charitable endeavours, notions of equality, egalitarianism, brotherhood and broad humanism. Service to humanity through feeding (Langar), healing (Jhar-Phuk, blowing and touching, charms and amulets), etc., was considered a better form of worship than ritualistic prayers...

In no way is the Qur’an anti-Judaism or anti-Jewish. However, there are people now, and there were people in the past; who have misused verses in the Qur’an for the purpose of vilifying and attacking Jews and other people of the book. Just as some Muslims have misused verses in the Qur’an to attack and vilify Sunni, Shi’a or Sufi Muslims; some Muslims, as well as some Christians and some Jews, have misused some verses from their own Holy Scriptures for unholy purposes of disrespect, disparagement and even destruction...

The truth is that the Muslim World in its current state is hardly in any state to be proud of. In most Muslim majority countries things such as human rights and women’s rights are optional at best. Saudi Arabia, claimant to the leadership of the Muslim World, is a woeful example be it women’s rights or human rights in general. It is the responsibility of every Muslim to point out the flaws so that these self-proclaimed leaders of the Ummah are held accountable for their actions...

Moderation: The Capstone of Islam
Moin Qazi, New Age Islam

The theme of moderation in religious practice has been the leitmotif in Islamic literature from the very beginning, during the Prophet Muhammad's life in the early 7th century. In the Quran and the Prophetic traditions that amplify it, Muslim women and men are called upon to exercise moderation in all aspects of their religious life. "God desires ease for you, and desires not hardship," the Quran exhorts us, and Muhammad confirms: "Make things easy, do not make them difficult."….
