Religion of the Jahiliya: Jihadism is Kufr, not Islam - Pakistani Jihadists Revealed Plans for Indian Muslims in 1999
Sultan Shahin

Mr. Basha is right. Calling Islam a religion of the Jahiliya would not be a fair comment. Far from that! It would be outrageous. However, the very headline of my article is: Religion of the Jahiliya: Jihadism is Kufr, not Islam. It is JIhadism that I am calling Religion of the Jahiliya and Kufr, not Islam.

The more important issue for us, however, at the moment and of more urgent and practical relevance is the attempt being made to get us Indian Muslims embroiled in an internecine conflict. There is no other meaning of the repeated attacks from across the borders. The question that should be engaging our minds is what we do about it as Muslims to tackle these marauders, in addition to what the government is doing as the guardian of our national interests.

Suresh Chandra Gupta
Dear friends,
A nicely written article. No religion teaches violence. All religions teach to love and not to hate. I will like to know one thing - which place can be given the status of a mosque as per Islamic Standards? Was the structure demolished at Ayodhya a mosque as per these standards? During freedom struggle and after independence, many Hindu-Muslim riots have taken place in India.  Both  Hindus and Muslims have suffered in these riots. The place from where I came, Hindus suffered more. Why Gujrat riots have been and are being blown out of proportion?
Suresh Chandra Gupta
jihad is not against any other person or group of persons. Jihad is carried out against the evil thoughts, speech and actions, oneself in indulging in. In Hinduism, it is called Tapasya. Jihad is self-reforming. Jihad is fight against the evil person sheltered in one's body and mind. Each person carries out his or her own jihad. What is happening these days is not jihad. One should not make a mistake of calling terrorism as jihad. In fact, when we speak truth we jihad against untruth. Similarly, non-violence is jihad against violence. Killing other people in the name of jihad is a crime against God.
A.M.Jamsheed Basha, Chennai, India

Suresh Chandra Gupta has raised certain important points that need to be answered. He enquired whether Jihad is relevant today.

Let me clarify that Jihad,  means, a crusade for a principle or belief; a personal struggle in devotion to Islam especially involving spiritual discipline; and finally a holy war on behalf of Islam as a religious duty.  The present concept of "jihad" as propagated by the Taliban inspired Mullahs of Islam does not fit into any of the three categories stated above. First and foremost, there is no justification for fomenting trouble in India in the name of "Jihad" as Islam is not in danger in India. Muslims perhaps had suffered in a number of riots during partition of the country and thereafter till date. But the riots that has shaken the conscience of the world was the state sponsored pogrom in Gujarat where more than 5000 Muslims were killed or wounded and thousands were displaced, crores of properties were damaged. That is why Gujarat riots stand out among other riots as the mother of all riots in the country.

It is true that in the riots both Muslims and Hindus suffered but then when the riots is engineered, organised and supported by State apparatus as like in Gujarat, the sufferings would be enormous, killings miserable and loss of properties immeasurable. This is what has happened in Gujarat and the man on whom all the allegations of complicity revolved around is Modi, who is still the Chief Minister of the state despite several strictures passed by various courts for the laxity in taking actions against the culprits of the riots including that by the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court. It was a deadly blow on the state administration, when Supreme Court directs the transfer and trial of all cases outside the state under a different High Court. This has happend with Modi's Gujarat but he has no remorse. He made it no secret of his hatred towards the Muslim community and he demonstrated it when he refused to honour two Muslims crickers, Irfan and Yousuf Pathan, the members of the World Cup T20 tournament, when all other states honoured the players from their state. This kind of attitude by a Chief Minister of a State, is what alienates Muslims from the rest of the population. Where was the conscience of the nation when such things happened against the Muslims in Gujarat and Malegaon? This is the question being asked by a common man in the streets. Then why blame Muslims for such an attitude. Need not worry on this score, as more and more population among Muslims have since realised their folly and demonstrated what is unity means to them when they unitedly opposed the recent dastardly terrorist attack in Mumbai.

I and several intellectuals in the write up have made it very clear that killing has no sanction in Islam. The terrorism is not Jihad nor the killing of innocents in the name of Islam, is Jihad. Jihad is a true struggle against oppression, against poverty, misery, illeteracy and social discrimination, which is rampant in the Islamic world at a greater degree.  The son of the former King Fahd had reportedly spent 15 Million Dollars for erecting a tent for his marriage. These kinds of lavish spending in an Islamic country is something to feel sorry about. This is the place, where our Prophet Mohamed and his progeny suffered untold misery fighting with poverty with no means of lively hood. When he died, the Great Prophet Mohammed PBUH had nothing to leave for his family. He lived in misery, poverty and died as such. He was as a matter of fact the "King" of the Muslim Nation but he showed to the world what is simplicity and what is self-less rule should be. His beloved daughter Fathima RA, used to struggle with her daily chores and chidren rearing with no assistance and many a time lived without food for many days. Such was her condition and that of the Prophet himself, who also used to live without food for days together. In a land of such great Prophet PBUH, the ordinary Prince of an ex-King Fahd, lavisly spends 15 Millions dollars for just erecting a tent, when millions of Muslims are living in utter poverty in his neighbourhood, does not in anyway reflects Islamic teachings. This is only one example of the life of our Islamic rulers. Instances are many and it would put every Muslim to shame, if narrated here. When such is the life of our Islamic rulers, where is the necessity to expand their so called ideology of Jihad to India?

Pakistan is no exception. Its President, was known as Mr.10% till recently and debonaire for his extravanga living.. He has amassed wealth and stacked in millions in foreign banks for his children's future. What kind of ruler he is? He has no locus standi to teach morality to others. He has no business to interfere in the problems of Muslims of India. His country is under siege by the Talibans, whose dangerous  radical beliefs and teachings are spreading in Pakistan like a wild fire.  He is better advised to first save Pakistan from the Talibans or else US and allied forces would bomb Pakistan to stone ages. Pakistana should not only keep off Indian but also take measures against the terror outfits, that dare not attack India for one more time. Indian patience is running out and Pakistan is better advised to act fast and do more as the steps taken may be right but not sufficient enough to satisfy India. US has also cautioned Pakistan of the need to do more towards this end. India would keenly watch all the steps taken by Pakistan towards dismantling of all the structures of terror in Pakistan. Jai Hind.

Dear Sultan Sahab,

No Jihad is valid and allowed without the approval of Ruler of Islamic State.

Interpretation of Jihad by Wahabis/Ahl-e-Hadith/Salafis

Jihaad requires preparation and organization, and the existence of a leader of the army who can weigh up the pros and cons. This strikes the balance between those who are reckless and pay no attention to the regulations of sharee’ah, and those who neglect this duty and ignore it completely. It is obligatory to follow the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in all his affairs, which includes preparation and equipping oneself.

Jihaad is of various kinds, some of which are obligatory upon everyone who is accountable, and some are obligatory upon the community as a whole – if some people undertake them then the rest are relieved of the obligation. And some kinds of jihad are mustahabb.

Jihad al-nafs (jihad against one’s self) and jihad al-Shaytaan (jihad against the Shaytaan) are obligatory upon everyone who is accountable. Jihad against the munaafiqeen (hypocrites), kaafirs (disbelievers) and leaders of oppression and innovation is obligatory upon the community as a whole. Physical jihad (i.e. fighting) against the kaafirs may become an individual obligation upon everyone who is able to do it in certain circumstances, which will be described below.

Ibn al-Qayyim said:

Once this is understood, then jihad is of four kinds: Jihad al-nafs (jihad against one’s self), jihad al-Shaytaan (jihad against the Shaytaan), jihad against the kaafirs and jihad against the hypocrites.

Jihad al-nafs (jihad against one’s self) is of four kinds:

1 – Striving to learn the teachings of Islam without which one cannot attain success and happiness in this world or in the Hereafter; if this is missing then one is doomed to misery in this world and in the Hereafter.

2 – Striving to make oneself act in accordance with what one has learned. Simply knowing without acting, even though it may not cause any harm, is not going to bring any benefit.

3 – Striving to call others to Islam, teaching those who do not know about it. Otherwise one will be one of those who conceal that which Allaah has revealed of guidance and teaching, and it will not benefit him or save him from the punishment of Allaah.

4 – Striving to bear patiently the difficulties involved in calling people to Allaah and the insults of people; bearing all that for the sake of Allaah.

If a person achieves all these four levels, then he will be one of the rabbaaniyyeen (learned men of religion who practise what they know and also preach to others. Cf. Aal ‘Imraan 3:79).

Interpretation of the meaning:

It is not (possible) for any human being unto whom Allah had given the Scripture and wisdom and the prophethood that he should afterwards have said unto mankind: Be slaves of me instead of Allah; but (what he said was): Be ye faithful servants of the Lord by virtue of your constant teaching of the Scripture and of your constant study thereof.

The salaf were agreed that the scholar does not deserve to be called a rabbaani unless he knows the truth, acts in accordance with it and teaches it to others. Whoever teaches, acts in accordance with his knowledge and has knowledge, he will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Jihad against the Shaytaan is of two types:

1 – Warding off the doubts that he stirs up to undermine faith.

2 – Striving against him to ward off the corrupt desires that he provokes.

The first jihad is followed by certainty of faith, and the second is followed by patience. Allaah says

Interpretation of the meaning:

And when they became steadfast and believed firmly in Our revelations, We appointed from among them leaders who guided by Our command.

Allaah tells us that leadership in religion is attained through patience and certainty of faith. Patience wards off desires and certainty wards off doubts.

Jihad against the kaafirs and hypocrites is of four kinds: with the heart, the tongue, one’s wealth and oneself. Jihad against the kaafirs is more along the lines of physical fighting whereas jihad against the hypocrites is more along the lines of using words and ideas.

Jihad against the leaders of oppression and innovation is of three kinds:

1 – Jihad with one's hand (i.e., physical jihad, fighting) if one is able. If that is not possible then it should be with one's tongue (i.e., by speaking out). If that is not possible then it should be with one's heart (i.e., by hating the evil and feeling that it is wrong).

These are the thirteen types of jihad, and “Whoever dies without having fought or having resolved to fight has died following one of the branches of hypocrisy.” (Narrated by Muslim, 1910).

Zaad al-Ma’aad, 3/9-11)

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz  said:

“Jihad is of various kinds, with one’s self, one's wealth, by making du’aa’, by teaching and guiding, by helping to do good in any way. The greatest form of jihad is jihad with one’s self (i.e., going oneself and fighting), followed by jihad with one's wealth, jihad by speaking out and guiding others. Da’wah is also part of jihad.  But going out oneself to fight in jihad is the highest form.

(Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 7/334, 335)

The idea of waging physical jihad against the kaafirs went through a number of stages, depending on the state in which the Muslim ummah was. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“The first thing which his Lord revealed to him was to read in the name of his Lord who had created. That was the beginning of his Prophethood, where Allaah commanded him to recite to himself but He did not yet command him to convey that. Then He revealed the words

Interpretation of the meaning:

O thou enveloped in thy cloak, Arise and warn!

So he became a Prophet with the word ‘Iqra (Read!) and he became a Messenger with the words, ‘O you (Muhammad) enveloped in garments…’ Then Allaah commanded him to warn his closest kinsmen, then to warn his people, then to warn the Arabs around them, then to warn all the Arabs, then to warn all of mankind. He continued to call them for over ten years from the beginning of his Prophethood, without fighting or imposing the jizyah; he was commanded to refrain, to be patient and to be forbearing.

Then permission was given to him to migrate, and permission was given to him to fight.

Then he was commanded to fight those who fought him, and to refrain from fighting those who left him alone and did not fight him.

Then Allaah commanded him to fight the mushrikeen so that the religion would all be for Allaah.

After jihad was enjoined upon him, the kaafirs then fell into three categories: those with whom there was a truce or peace treaty; those with whom he was at war; and those who lived under the rule and protection of the Islamic state.”

(Zaad al-Ma’aad, 3/159)

The ruling on physical jihad against the kaafirs is that this is an obligation on the community as a whole (fard kafaayah).

Ibn Qudaamah said:

“Jihaad is an obligation upon the community; if some people undertake it, the rest are relieved of the obligation.”

What fard kafaayah means is that if it is not undertaken by enough people, then all the people are guilty of sin, but if enough people undertakes it, the rest will be relieved of blame. Initially the command is addressed to all of them, as in the case of an individual obligation (fard ‘ayn), but then in the case of fard kafaayah the obligation is dropped if enough of the people undertake to do it, unlike the case with fard ‘ayn where the obligation is not dropped if someone else does it. Jihad is a fard kafaayah, according to the majority of scholars.”

(al-Mughni, 9/163)

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz said:

“We have previously explained on more than one occasion that jihad is fard kafaayah, not fard ‘ayn. All Muslims are enjoined to support their brothers with their selves (i.e., physically, by joining them), or with money, weapons, da’wah and advice. If enough of them go out (to fight), the rest are freed from sin, but if none of them do that then all of them are sinners.

The Muslims in Saudi Arabia, Africa, North Africa and elsewhere are obliged to do their utmost, and if there is a jihad in one country, the surrounding countries should hasten to help them, the closest then the next closest.  If one or two states, or three or more, manage to fulfil the obligation, then the rest are freed of responsibility. They deserve to be supported, and it is obligatory to help them against their enemies, because they are oppressed. Allaah has enjoined jihad upon all Muslims, and they must fight against the enemies of Allaah until their brothers are victorious. If they fail to do that then they are sinners, but if sufficient people undertake to do that, then the rest are absolved of sin.”

(Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 7/335)

Physical jihad against the kaafirs becomes obligatory in four cases, which are:

1 – When the Muslim is present in a jihad situation.

2 – When the enemy has come and attacked a Muslim land

3 – When the ruler mobilizes the people, they must respond.

4 – When a person is needed and no one else can do the task except him.

Jihad is obligatory and becomes fard ‘ayn if a person is present where fighting is going on. This is the first of the situations in which jihad becomes an individual obligation, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

Interpretation of the meaning:

O ye who believe! When ye meet those who disbelieve in battle, turn not your backs to them. Whoso on that day turneth his back to them, unless manoeuvring for battle or intent to join a company, he truly hath incurred wrath from Allah, and his habitation will be hell, a hapless journey's end.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said that running away on the day when the army is advancing is one of the sins that doom a person to Hell. He said: “Avoid the seven sins that doom a person to Hell…” among which he mentioned running away on the day when the army is advancing (agreed upon). But Allaah has made exceptions in two cases:

1- When it is a military manoeuvre, in the sense that he is leaving to bring reinforcements.

2- When he is going to join another group, when he has been told that there is a group of Muslims elsewhere who are about to be defeated, so he goes to join them in order to strengthen their numbers. This is subject to the condition that there is no risk to the group he is in; if there is a risk to the group that he is in, then it is not permissible for him to go to the other group. In this case (jihad) is an individual obligation upon him (fard ‘ayn) and it is not permissible for him to leave.

The second situation (in which jihad becomes an individual obligation) is when a city is besieged by the enemy. Then he has to fight in defence of the city, because when the city is besieged there is no alternative but to defend it, for if the enemy is going to prevent people from leaving the city or entering it, and prevent provisions from reaching it, and other things which are well known, then in this case the people of the city are obliged to fight in order to defend their city.

The third situation is when the leader tells the people to mobilize; the leader (imam) is the highest authority in the state, but he need not necessarily be the leader of all the Muslims, because there has been no leader of all the Muslims (khaleefah) for a long time. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Listen and obey, even if you are ruled by an Abyssinian slave.” So if a man becomes a leader, then his word is to be heeded and his commands are to obeyed.

(al-Sharh al-Mumti’, 8/10-12).

Difference between Jihad and Qital:

The word jihad is more general than the word qitaal (fighting). Jihaad may be with the tongue (by speaking out), or with weapons (which is qitaal or fighting) or with money. Each of these categories includes numerous subcategories.

Jihad with the tongue includes jihad against the kaafirs, as well as jihad against the hypocrites, jihad against the people of bid’ah (innovation), and jihad against the people of misguidance and whims and desires.

Qitaal may only be done with weapons; it includes fighting the kaafirs, fighting the wrongdoers and fighting the Khawaarij.

The greatest kind of fighting is fighting those who disbelieve, for Allaah has commanded us to fight them. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Fight against those who (1) believe not in Allaah, (2) nor in the Last Day, (3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allaah and His Messenger  (Muhammad), (4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued”

Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which Allah hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the Religion of Truth, until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low.

O ye who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who keep their duty (unto Him).

Jihaad against the kuffaar with weapons is of two types: jihad talab (offensive jihad) and jihad daf’ (defensive jihad).

Jihad talab means attacking the kuffaar in their own lands until they become Muslim or pay the jizyah with willing submission and feel themselves subdued. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I have been commanded to fight the people until they bear witness that there is no god but Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah, and establish regular prayer, and pay zakaah. If they do that, then they have protected their blood and their wealth from me, except in cases decreed by Islamic law, and their reckoning with be with Allaah.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

The purpose of this kind of jihad is not to fight the kuffaar and take their wealth.

The second type is jihad al-daf’ (defensive jihad). If the enemy attacks a Muslim country or fights a Muslim country, then jihad is obligatory in that case. If the people of that country are able to undertake this obligation, then all well and good, and the others should support them, both financially and spiritually (by making du’aa’ for them). If the people in that country are not able to undertake this obligation by themselves, then those who are nearby must support them, each according to his ability, whether by giving money, speaking out, or going and fighting.

Aamir Mughal

Dear Sultan Sahab,

Following are the two opinions, number 1 is of an Scholar and number 2 of layman like myself

1 - Murder, Manslaughter and Terrorism -- All in the Name of Allah

In verse a and b the term Jihad entails struggling for self purification or a spiritual struggleand does not signify holy war in these verses. When the Holy Quran calls upon or permits Muslims to fight it specifically states so, the fighting which has been sanctioned is also dependent on certain conditions. Fighting has to be started by the other side, retaliation must be by those who have been "wronged" and one must have suffered religious persecution. The Merciful Creator makes specific mention of the places of religious worshippers of other religions in the aforesaid verse-"monasteries, churches, synagogues" (The Pilgrimage: 40). Muslims are enjoined to save all places of worship, in which "the Allah's name is commemorated in abundant measure". Tolerance for believers of other faiths is an article of faith and Muslims may also fight (and should fight) to protect the places of worship of Non-Muslims. Planning in respect of kidnappings, hijackings, and suicide bombings are all done in secrecy, which is again is abhorrent to Allah. Justice which is a pivotal feature of Islam is required to be administered openly and after giving the accused ample opportunity to defend himself (it applies on USA/OSAMA AND TALIBAN TOO).  Would these Jihadis and their cohorts like to tell us as to why there were so many leaders of their JIHAD when it is not allowed in Islam to have so many leaders for a single JIHAD as happenned in Afghanistan and later on Kashmir. Islam abhors Secrecy. Where there is Secrecy there is deceit, particularly in Muslim countries, we cannot complain about the West as Shariah does not bind them but we are bound by Shariah. Jehad is only for Allah and cannot be fought secretly and its announcement should be open not like some bandits. Who would for the lives of those innocnet misguided youth sacrificed in the name of Jihad at the altar of Strategic Depths and whereas their own scions were studying abroad in the West. How would you define the War between Taliban (Muslims) and Northern Alliance (Muslims) between 1996 to 1999 and how would you justify the War between Afghan Mujahideen amongst themselves after the departure of Soviets. During the days of Kargil the same Pakistani Establishment/Army and Generals were the heroes of several Jihadi Organizations and after 9/11 the very same Mullah Brigands started issuing Religious Decrees of Kufr against them

a- "And if any strive (jahad), they do so for their own souls: For Allah is free of all needs from creation" {The Spider – XXIX (Soora Al-Ankaboot) Verse 6}.

b- "As for those who strive in Us, We surely guide them to Our paths, and lo! Allah is with the good. {The Spider – XXIX (Soora Al-Ankaboot) Verse 6}

c- "And strive in His cause as ye ought to strive (Wajahadu Fillahay Haqqa Jihad-e-Hi). He has chosen you and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion....So establish regular prayer, give zakat and hold fast to Allah!" {The Believers – XXIII (Soora Al-Mominoon) Verse 78}.

d- "To those against whom war (yuqataluna) is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged; and verily, Allah is Most Powerful for their aid. Those who have been expelled from their homesin defiance of right for (for no cause) except that they say "our LORD is Allah". Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundany measures" {The Pilgrimage – XXII (Soora Al-Hajj) Verse 39 and 40).

e- "Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors" {The Cow – II (Soora Al-Baqara) Verse 190}.

f- Lo! Cospiracy is only of the devil, that he may vex those who believe; but he can harm them not at all unless by Allah’s leave. In Allah let believers put their trust. {She That Disputeth – LVII (Soora AL-MUJADILA) Verse 10 and 11}.

g- "There is no good in much of their secret conferences save (in) him who enjoineth  almsgiving and kindness and peace-making among the people.” {Women – IV (Soora Al-Nisa) Verse 114).

h- They long that ye should disbelieve even as they disbelieve, that ye may be upon a level (with them). So choose not friends from them till they forsake their homesin the way of Allah; if they turn back (to enmity), then take them and kill them wherever ye find them, and choose no friend nor helper from among them. Except those who seek refuge with a people between whom and you there is covenant, or (those who) come unto you because their hearts forbid them them to make war on their own folk. Had Allah willed He could have given them power over you so that assuredly they would have fought you. So, if they hold aloof from you and wage not war against you and offer you peace, Allah alloweth you no way against them. Ye will find others who desire that they should have security from you, and security from their own folk. So often as they are returned to hostility they are plunged therein. If they keep not aloof from you nor offer you peace nor hold their hands, then take them and kill them wherever ye find them. Against such we have given you clear warrant {Women – IV (Soora Al-Nisa) Verse 89, 90 and 91}.

Mr. Sultan Shahin has touched upon the very essence of the crisis the Muslim world is faced with today. Jihadism as is being intrepreted and practised by the pseudo Muslims (the wahabis and ahle-hadis)  in the name of true Islam, indeed is Jahilism. Those who practise modern day Jihad are no different from the likes of Hinda, Abu Sufiyan, Muawiya and Yazid.

True Jihad was the one waged by Imam Husain against Yazid who represented the forces of evil and injustice. True Jihad in Islam means sacrifice. It means perseverence and patience. Islam doenot permit killing. True Jihad means fighting evil through non-voilent means. It means raising your voice when one should, democratically.

Jihad doesnot mean Muslims fighting against Muslims because of a difference in religious beliefs. Killing in the name of Jihad becomes necessary only when your life is threatened.

Thanks Mr. Sultan Shain for an illuminating article.

Pakistan has no place to hide this time, must introspect and rectify mistakes of the past

By Tanveer Jafri,

The two nations, India and Pakistan which are equipped with the nuclear equipments, usually seen active in the directions of increasing mutual cooperation in the SAARC’s annual meetings, but misfortunately, these two countries often frown at each other at the same time. However the public of these two countries do not like mutual tension. The journalists, literates, persons concerned with sports, films, music, trade, industry and specially those that have mutual relationships on both the sides of the border do not wish the tension to be present anywhere. But in reality, not only among the political leaders of both the countries but among the common people, there is a large group that is in favour of ending the bondages like boundary line, visa and passport. Then why the armies of the both sides come to the mood of combat whenever they see each other.

The people of the world and even Pakistan very well knows that the illegal entrance from Pakistan side in Kargil and Drass sectors of Jammu & Kashmir area in 1999 made a war like atmosphere between the two countries. As a result of it many soldiers were killed from both the sides. Why the Pak rulers did that illegal entrance?   Right in the same way, because of the attack on Indian Parliament on December 14, 2001, many terrorists were killed that bore relationship with Pakistan. This attack on the Indian Parliament shocked the pride of India. That time, too, Indian armies came out of their barracks and marched towards the boundary line. But because of the understanding of both sides and interference of international powers, India showed its tolerance power and called the armies back to the barracks. Now again a tense atmosphere has come out between the two countries. The reason for the tense atmosphere of this time is the attack of Pakistani terrorists on this November 26 on some main places in the cosmopolitan city of Mumbai. This time, where the nine terrorists were killed by the Indian security agencies, the tenth named Mohammad Ajmal Aamir Qasab was arrested alive. The arrested terrorist during interrogation is giving information regarding the running of terrorists training camps in Pakistan. These pieces of information are not new to the India. Because India, for the last decades is saying again and again that there are nurseries in Pakistan that are nurturing and producing the terrorists, in the name of religion in Pakistan. But Pakistan never admits it and expresses its doubts to it. The rulers in Pakistan have always tried to hide the facts and put curtains over it. They deny the facts that there are training camps for the terrorists on the soil of Pakistan.

It can be said that the Taliban ruled over Afghanistan. But in reality they got their energy from Pakistan. Can Pakistan deny the fact that it was Pakistan that gave recognition to the cruel Talibani Government in Afghanistan? After 9/11 and NATO attack under leadership of America on Afghanistan, the Taliban spokesman used to put its side, while it was in Pakistan. Now the Taliban, is active by the name of Tehrik-e-Taliban in Pakistan is involved in the violent and destructive activities in Pakistan and is beyond the control of the Pakistan rulers. The Pakistan lost its one of the big leaders, Benazir Bhutto only because of its wrong policies of nurturing the terrorism, hiding the terrorism activities of the terrorists and telling lies about the terrorists before the world. President Musharraf had a narrow escape for two times from the terrorist attacks. Nawaz Shareef was also a lucky person who escaped the terrorist attack. Marriott Hotel was a prey to a great suicide attack. All these terrorist activities reached that limits only because of the fact that the Pak rulers acted cowardly and did not face and challenge of the terrorism but hid it.

Now once again the Pakistan rulers are repeating that blunder. Despite the attack of November 26, on Mumbai by the terrorists and the acceptance of the arrested terrorist that he is Pakistan citizen, his acknowledging the fact that there are terrorist training camps in Pakistan, the Pakistan rulers say that we want some proofs from India. The citizenship of the arrested terrorists Ajmal qasab is being doubted by them. But now Aamir qasab, the father of arrested terrorist, who is a citizen of Pakistan has admitted that Ajmal Kasab is his son. Now what more proof do they demand?

Now one misfortunate thing is happening in this tense atmosphere and that is a group of Pak media, just like Pak rulers, is hiding the truth by the false arguments and trying to misguide the world by putting a strong curtain over the bad & dangerous activity of terrorism. Last days, in a famous paper, a photo of the terrorist Ajmal qasab was published in Pakistan. In that photo qasab was shown with a weapon in his right hand and hinting some what by his left hand. The photo taken at CST terminal Bombay by CCTV camera is being seen in the world. The columnist of Pakistan studied the photo minutely that there is a thick thread tied on the right wrist of Ajmal. The writer put the argument that such type of threads is tied by the Hindu community. So Ajmal may be the terrorist having connection with Hindu community. Now what can be the answer to this Pak journalist if the father of the terrorist is confessing that Ajmal is his son? The second fact is that even in Pakistan same Muslim faqirs, managing the shrines in Pakistan, tie these threads. This is done in the Muslim community also. The Pak media should tell the truth and justice and not “to rob peter to pay Paul”.

Some responsible journalists in Pakistan accuse India that it hurriedly blames Pakistan. For this they give reference of the Samjhota Express and Malegaon bomb blasts. But Pak media and Pak government should keep in mind that Indian security agencies examined the accident of Malegaon and tried their best to do fair deal with it. It was done with honestly, efficiently impartially and reasonably. The Indian security agencies without the foreign pressure itself blamed the Hindu terrorism. There was no pressure on them from the secular political organizations. I agree with the argument of Pak media that there is lack of transparency about the discussion of the politicians of both the countries. They see tricks behind the right advice even. Obviously the terrorist enjoy the distrustful atmosphere of this type and other countries get chance to interfere in the mutual affairs of India and Pakistan.

The present rulers of Pakistan and even the former ruler president Pervez Mussharaf are requesting the world to behave with them sympathetically as Pakistan, it self is affected of terrorism. Pak Defense Minister Ahmed Mukhtar, himself admitted that had Pakistan not banned the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Pakistan would have been declared a terrorist nation by UNO. These circumstances cause worry not only to Pakistan, but to India also. There are not one or two proofs that terrorism is being nurtured in Pakistan, but there is hundreds of it. But misfortunately the Pak rulers are even now trying to prove it a lie. The Pak terrorists are not only giving hard blows to India but they are shocking the all countries of world. Shahzad Tanvir a suicide terrorist who caused the 7/7Metro railway accidents in London was trained and educated in Pakistan. 52 innocent persons were killed in this accident. Shahzad Tanvir is seen as a hero among the fundamentalists in Pakistan. The south Asia Bureau chief of Wall Street journal, 38years Daniel pearl was kidnapped in Karachi while going for an interview. He was beheaded in February2002. In this terror accident in Karachi a Pakistan’s British citizen Umar syed sheikh was hanged.

There are several examples of such type and not one or two. The terrorist and extremist religionist organizations and many other names are there that are harming the world. But first of all these are proving harmful to Pakistan. So the Pak rulers, the Pak army and the ISI that is being held responsible for making Pakistan unstable should try to understand the evil effects of the terrorism. Pakistan itself should try hard to uproot the terrorist network as there should be neither doubt to India for its not taking any action against terrorism nor to America or other countries a chance to interfere.

Mr. Sultan Shahin has touched upon the very essence of the crisis the Muslim world is faced with today. Jihadism as is being interpreted and practised by the pseudo Muslims (the wahabis and ahle-hadis) in the name of true Islam, indeed is Jahilism.

It means perseverance and patience. Islam doenot permit killing. True Jihad means fighting evil through non-voilent means. It means raising your voice when one should, democratically.

Jihad does not mean Muslims fighting against Muslims because of a difference in religious beliefs. Killing in the name of Jihad becomes necessary only when your life is threatened.

Thanks Mr. Sultan Shahin for an illuminating article.

To the Editor,

I would like to be called just an Indian always but for somebody who follows Hinduism let me say "while  I always believed that there are good and bad people in all, I am thrilled to hear in this forum positive and new age views of Muslim  writers , scholars and the general community.

I have always maintained that over the years there have been instances when a lot many communities -( without referring specifically to any ) have been involved in unacceptable behaviour , some in colossal wrongdoings between each other . This is by a section who doesn’t think righteous. For the bulk of Indians living is just about everything. And the vast majority wants to live in peace.

Personally I have been friends with good number of people who follow Islam, and when we are friends it is friendship that matters the most to us. There is no greater joy than the joy of living in harmony.

I believe that as parents / elderly people we must encourage feeling of brotherhood among different communities. It isn’t difficult being friends with anyone. Even if it is, there is everything to gain in giving it a try.

While I would have a lot many opinions on what people from non Muslim faith should do

This is what I feel Muslims should do -

1. Internet is a good medium to discuss and share right thoughts but the bulk of masses would not benefit from it. Need to be forthright and fear not in calling a spade a spade.

2. This one is difficult but I must say - as I mentioned unacceptable behaviour has happened from different communities at different times. However the truth is if we keep wounds open, it is bound to have deeper repercussions, right thinking people might get carried away, outsiders may take advantage, and criminal elements might take advantage. Bottomline, we the people of India continue suffering.

3. Personally I would think of an India wherein all communities live in prosperity, Education is one area where Muslims need to focus upon to enable them to mix up with other communities and take up the best of jobs. Elite Muslims who are busy in their own lives can do a lot of good for those who are at rock bottom. Well here i would say demand for more schools in neighbourhoods, making politicians accountable. I have a controversial point here to say which actually is applicable all communities. when we as Indians ( Hindus, Muslims, Christians , Sikhs  Buddhists etc. do not control population in our own way. we do not allow our children to have a decent living . More mouths to feed with lesser income does not help. Poverty should not be the root cause of people driven to any kind of crime major or minor.

4. Small things matter much, inviting friends / colleagues for Id , marriages functions should be even more common . Not to say that this doesn’t happen now, but the essence of my saying is let it be even closer.

5 Let’s fight together as one in weeding out elements irrespective of who and what from India who are responsible for any anti India activities.

6 Lastly we are all one, god of one; the Allah in Islam is the god for me too. More than anything else I’m sure that through good deeds irrespective of what religion one practices, you get the blessings of Allah.

a good number of these are points which  we all just as Indians must follow.

Regards to all
