An Indecent Attempt to Tarnish the Image of the Companions of the Prophet

A critique of Arif Mohammad Khan’s “fallacious” arguments on Yazid’s succession and Karbala

By Maulana Nadeem-ul-Wajidee

Transkated from Urdu by Syed Raihan Ahmad Nezami

A Delhi Urdu daily newspaper published recently an article “Hazrat Imam Aa’la Muqam and Yazeed Pleed” by former union minister A’rif Mohammad Khan. One would have thought that this article will talk about the greatness of Hazrat Imama Hussein in this article.  But you will not find a single point describing the greatness of Hazrat Imam (May Allah Be Pleased with Him). From the title it appears as if it is going to describe the great stature and character of Hazrat Imam (May Allah Be Pleased with Him), or throw some light on the occurrence of Karbala exposing the atrocities of Yazeed. Bu the writer has merely distorted the facts and criticized the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah Be Pleased with Them) with reference to the succession of Yazeed.

As this paper is read by the common man, I thought it better to present an analysis of the points of view of the writer in this regard so that, if any reader has got any misconception against the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah Be Pleased with Them) by the wrong notion, his confusion should be cleared.

Before analyzing the point of view of the writer, I want to make clear that the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah Be Pleased with Them) are not ordinary beings of the Muslim world, but they, having decent virtues and spiritual characteristics belong to such a group of the Muslims that is compared by the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) to the stars. Following any one of these persons can take us to “Nijat” salvation as they are the medium between the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and His “Ummah”. Without their assistance, neither the “Tafseer” of the Holy Quran-e-Kareem can be understood adequately nor the teachings and the “Sunnat” of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

Unfortunately, some groups in the “Ummat” are raising their voices and have made the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) the target of their repulsive condemnation in the name of research and criticism. Some are those who injudiciously criticize Hazrat Ali (May Allah be Pleased with him) and Hazrat Hussein bin Ali (May Allah be Pleased with him) in support of Hazrat Mua’wiya (May Allah be Pleased with him) and Yazeed bin Mua’wiya. Some are those who condemn Hazrat Mua’wiya (May Allah be Pleased with him) and Hazrat Mugheera bin Sho’ba (May Allah be Pleased with him) in favour of Hazrat Hussein (May Allah be Pleased with him). As a fact, all the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) are without any doubt honourable and respectable, no one can deny their distinct position and great significance in Islam that is well-approved by the Holy Quran-e-Kareem and the Hadeeth Shareef of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

A’llama Safareeni (May Allah be pleased with Him) has written in the “Sharah Al-A’qeeda Al-Madeeat” that the whole “Ummat” is agreed on this point that the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) are considered only next to the Prophets. A’llama bin Abd-ul-Bir (May Allah be pleased with him) has also clarified in the preface of “Al-Asti’ab” that the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) are obviously, after the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), better and greater than all human beings as they possess all the qualities of justice and honesty to the fullest.

All the renowned Islamic scholars agree that the very first example of this Aa’yat “You are the best Ummah which has been created for the welfare and guidance of the people” in the Holy Quran-e-Kareem (Surat Aa’l E’mran, 110) is for the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them). Even the Almighty Allah Kareem has praised the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) in the Holy Quran Kareem.

The Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is the Messenger of the Almighty Allah Kareem and the people, “the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them)” who are with you, are very strong against the disbelievers “Kafiroon” and kind for the friends, are seen in the prostration of “Ruku” and “Sujood”, they always seek the benevolence and conformity of ” (Surat Al-Fatah, 29), the sign of the prostration “Sujood” is visible on their faces.

The Holy Quran-e-Kareem has clearly stated about the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them), “ the Almighty Allah Kareem is Pleased with them, and they are Pleased with Him”( Surat Al-Maeda,119). Is it possible any Sahabee (May Allah be Pleased with him) will commit any kind of mistake to upset the Almighty Allah Kareem even after this permanent declaration of agreement. A’llama bin Taimiah has written in “Al-Sarim Al-Masloom “, when the Almighty Allah Kareem agrees with someone, He never disagrees with him and He agrees only with those, about whom he knows, will never commit any wrong to annoy Him. There are many references to the significance and greatness of the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) in the Ahadeeth Shareef also. (Some Rawayats are mentioned in my previous article, “A’ashoora-e-Muharram and the Occurrence of Karbala”). Here I would like to mention only one “Rewayat” that is mentioned in all the prominent books of Hadeeth Shareef.

According to Hazrat I’mran bin Haseen (May Allah be Pleased with him), The Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) asserted, “The best time is mine, after that of those who follow it, and after that of those who follow it. The narrator says that he forgot as to how many times – two or three times --   He had mentioned about the people who will follow him, after that those people will come who will be ready to give witness without any demand. They will deceive and not safe-guard other’s property, they will break their agreements, will not keep their promises. They will grow fat because of carelessness.

(Muslim Shareef, Part-4, Page-1962 Printed in Beirut)

The majority of the Islamic scholars think the respect of the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) is compulsory, they can’t be mentioned with disrespect. Allama bin Taimiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) has mentioned the statement of Imam Ahmed bin Jambal (May Allah be Pleased with him), “No one should mention Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) with disrespect. If anyone is found disrespecting Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them), his or her Islam is doubtful”. He further asserts, “It is also binding over the Ahl-e-Sunnat that the Muslims must maintain composure and purity of their heart and tongue in respect of the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them).

                                    (Sharh-ul-A’qeedatul-Wastiya, Page-403)

The books of Islamic Faith are full of such thoughts. According to Aqa’ed Nafsi, “This is the Faith of the followers of Islam that the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) should be mentioned with respect.”

                                                     (Aqa’ed-ul-Nafsiya, Page-161)

After this thorough discussion, now I take the article of Arif Mohammad. Khan. He has denounced two pious Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) in connection with Yazeed’s khilafat – first his father Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) and second Hazrat Mugheera bin Sho’ba (May Allah be Pleased with him) the governor of Kufa in the reign of Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him).

The summary of the content of what Arif Mohammad Khan has written in regard to Hazrat Mu’awiah bin Abu Sufyan (May Allah be Pleased with him) is the following: “Hazrat Mu’awiah wished to compromise with the influential persons for the acceptance of Yazeed’s khilafat. For instance, he sent one lakh Dirham to Hazrat Abdullah bin U’mar (May Allah be Pleased with him) and sought his agreement for the Bai’ah (Pledge) of Yazeed. He sarcastically replied that if the money was for that purpose, it meant his religion had become very cheap and returned the money.”

Arif Mohammad. Khan has attempted to tarnish the image and pious characters of Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) in the following words: “Only this can be said for the people who approve or defend the reign of Yazeed – that the human freedom and rights in the light of the orders of the Almighty Allah Kareem can be used not only for right and lawful activities, but also for false and unlawful purposes”.

Another victim of his bitter criticism is Hazrat Mugheera bin Sho’ba (May Allah be Pleased with him) against whom Arif Khan has gone to the extent of saying that he initiated the movement of appointing Yazeed as the Khaleefa (Caliph) when Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) removed him from the post of the governor of Kufa. He even gave 30 thousand dirham to his son Musa and sent him to Damishq to garner support in favour of Yazeed Paleed.

We can see the problem of Yazeed’s Khilafat from two angles.

 – First Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) had appointed his son as his heir even when he was alive. The question arises, was it for the welfare and benefit of the Muslim community?

 – Second point is: did he appoint Yazeed for the welfare of the Islamic khilafat or just because he was his son?  Was this appointment correct according to the Islamic norms? As far as the question of correctness or incorrectness is concerned the fact that his decision to nominate Yazeed as his heir is simply a tactical mistake can’t be denied. Later on, the consequences followed by this decision proved it as a fatal blunder; no matter how honestly it was taken.

It caused an irreparable divide among the Ummat-e-Islamia, the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) alive then had formed two groups and due to this rift, the brave, courageous and pious Hazrat Imam (May Allah be pleased with him) had to sacrifice his precious life, later on, this incidence became the root-cause of a permanent difference and divide.

Yet it is not judicious to blame Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) for having taken the decision to nominate Yazeed simply to serve his personal lust for power even crossing the religious limits. He had justly nominated Yazeed as his heir. As some Islamic clerics opine, “If anyone is nominated as his heir by the present Khaleefa (Caliph), it is compulsory and binding to be accepted by the whole Ummah. The renowned scholar A’llama Marordee (May Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Shah Wali Allah too have the same opinion.

Hazrat Maulana Md. Taqee U’smani Mudzillahu has expressed his views in his book “Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) and the historical facts” in the following words with reference to the famous scholar and writer Qazi Abu Yalie Al-Fara Al-Hasneli. “It is lawful for the Khaleefa (Caliph) to nominate such a person as his heir who is his son on condition, that he must possess the characteristics of a Khaleefa (Caliph). (Page-108)

Now the question arises whether Yazeed was eligible for Khilafat or not? In this regard, the two statements of Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) that he had given before the people after the Yazeed's nomination.Once, he had asserted, "O' Almighty Allah Kareem, You know it better, if I have nominated Yazeed as heir because he is eligible to that in my opinion, bless his succession (Wilayat), and if I have nominated him because I love him, don't bless and complete his succession (Wilayat)".

                                 (Al-Bedaya wa Al-Nihaya, Part-8, Page-80)

On another occasion, he asserted, "O' Almighty Allah Kareem, if I have nominated Yazeed as heir on the ground of his greatness, take him to that destination which I have hoped for him and help him. But if the love of the beloved father has instigated me for the decision, kill him before he reaches the destination of Khilafat.

                                                   (Tareekh-ul-Kholafa, Page-262)

After the above statements, it is absolutely unjustified to consider that Yazeed was ineligible for his nomination was based on the bias of Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him). If it is so-then no doubt it proves to be the wrong tradition of not observing the consequences in the truer light, reason being the extreme hatred for Yazeed. Anyway, it is not expected from a sincere Sahabee such as Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) that matters of great significance like “Khilafat” will be affected by his personal like or dislike or will be considered for an individual’s appeasement or for the benefit of the family.  Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) needs no introduction in the history of Islam. He is a Sahabee of such a great status and eminence who had performed the utmost important duty of “Writing Wahee (revelations)” and was often seen along with the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) as he had no other important work. “Writing Wahee” was a great task which required abundant amount of knowledge, learning and honesty and his selection for this task was made because these qualities were available in him in abundance.

As the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) was quite pleased with his responsible work, He (Peace be upon Him) often prayed for him in his supplication.

Sometimes, He (Peace be upon Him) prayed for his guidance by the Almighty Allah Kareem.

Sometimes, He (Peace be upon Him) prayed in these words, “O’ the Almighty Allah Kareem make Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) adept in Mathematics.

Sometimes, He (Peace be upon Him) prayed to keep Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) safe from the Fire of Hell.

Once, He (Peace be upon Him) prayed like this, “O’ the Almighty Allah Kareem, fill his heart with learning”

The prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) had great respect for the understanding and honesty of Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him). Once Hazrat Shaikhoon Hazrat Abu Bakr (May Allah be Pleased with him) and Hazrat O’mar (May Allah be Pleased with him) were discussing a matter without reaching a solution, the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) asked them, “Call Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) and take his advice. He will give a good suggestion as He is quite honest and possess a strong decisive nature.

A lot has been written on these qualities of Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) by Hafiz bin Abdul Bir in “Al-Asti’ab”, by Hafiz bin Hajr in “Al-Asaba, by Hafiz Zahbee in “Tareekhul-Islam” and by Hafiz bin Katheer in “Al-Bidaya wa Al-Nehaya”, for reference, these books can be consulted.

In the light of the above discussion, it is clear – behind the nomination of Yazeed as heir – no individual selfishness or paternal love was the stimulant, rather in the words of Allama bin Khildoon (May Allah be pleased with him), “Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) had nominated his son Yazeed as his heir in place of any other so that the unity and the integrity can be maintained among the Umma. The intellectual group of Banu Umai’ah had given his consent to this matter because of the prevailing situation at that time, so there was very little possibility of agreement on any other name except their own people who were considered the men of rank and repute in Quraish at that time. Nothing else can be expected from Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) who was a man of great justice and prudence and a significant Sahabee”.

                                            (Muqadma Ibn Khaldoon, Page-377)

Hazrat Mugheera bin Sho’ba (May Allah be Pleased with him) is also considered among the prominent Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them). He is such a great Sahabee whose characteristics are mentioned even in the Holy Quran-e-Kareem. It is quite known through certain “Rewayats” that he had been trusted in every era - from the era of the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) to the era of Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) and was entrusted with the duties of great significance.

Hazrat Mugheera bin Sho’ba (May Allah be Pleased with him) is categorized among the Sahaba-e-Karam who got the chance of (Pledge) Bai’ah-e-Ridhwan in 6 Hijri at the time of Hodeebiya Agreement. About those people who performed Bai’ah (Pledge) at that occasion on the pious hand of the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him), the Holy Quran-e-Kareem declares about the Almighty Allah Kareem’s agreeing with them in Al-Surah “Fath”, “Indeed the Almighty Allah Kareem was pleased with the believers when they gave the Bai’ah (Pledge) to you, O’ Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) under the tree”. That‘s why this Bai’ah (Pledge) is called Bai’ah-e-Ridhwan in the religion Islam and the history books. These Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) were also involved in the mission “Gazwa-e-Tabuk” in 9 Hijri. This mission “Gazwa” is highly remembered for the hardship and atrocities tolerated by the Mujahedeen whose tolerance and patience did not waver for a while. The Almighty Allah Kareem became so much pleased with them that He announced abundant blessings, offerings and rewards for them. This incident is mentioned in the “Aayat” 11 of “Al-Sura Touba”. Hazrat Mugheera bin Sho’ba (May Allah be Pleased with him) tops the list of the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) who were known for their perfect insight and understanding. So he was appointed the governor of Kufa by none other than the intellectual and intelligent Khaleefatul-Muslemeen Hazrat U’mar Farooq (May Allah be Pleased with him). This post remained with him till the reign of Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him).

It is beyond imagination that any Sahaba-e-Rasool can go to this extent that he will give wrong suggestions to “Khaleefatul-Muslemeen” just to save his post or to get the appeasement of his son with the intention of saving his post. He would not stop here; furthermore, he would spend 30 thousands Dirham from the Islamic Baitul-Maal or from his own pocket. Obviously, these assertions “Rewayats” are baseless and the historians have mentioned in their books without proper research and findings. That is why, various contradictions are found in these statements.

For example: Ibn Atheer has mentioned this incident in this way, “Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) wished to remove him from the governorship of Kufa, as soon as he heard about it, went to Damishq from Kufa and told Yazeed that he was unable to understand why Ameer-Al-Mumeneen was delaying Bai’ah (Pledge) in his favour.

On the other hand, this incidence is mentioned in “Tareekh-e-Tabari”, “Tareekh Ibn Khalood” and in “Al-Bidaya wa Al-Nehaya” like this; Hazrat Mugheera bin Sho’ba (May Allah be Pleased with him) went to Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) and resigned from the post of governorship on health ground. Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) accepted his resignation and desired to appoint Hazrat Sa’eed bin Al-Aas at his place. The rest of the incidence is the same that is described by Ibn Atheer.

As a matter of fact, it is written in the history books from Tabari who is generally considered to be under the influence of “Shiyaiat”. So he has intentionally collected particularly the incidents which support the motive of the “Shiyaiat”. Even to the extent that he ignored the validity of the assertions “Rewayats”. For example; take this “Rewayats”, Ali bin Mujahid is credited as the narrator who is mentioned in the book of Rajal as a producer of fake Hadeeth.

                                       (Tareekh-ul-Tahzeeb, Part-1, Page-274)

The majority opinion about the history books is – what is described by Moulana Mufti Md. Shafee Usmani in his book “Muqam-e-Sahaba”.

The degree of trust and faith that is established for the Holy Quran-e-Kareem and the consecutive Ahadeeth Shareef in Islam is not possible to be assigned to the general Hadeeth Shareef.

The degree of trust and faith that the Ahadeeth Shareef of the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) has got is not possible for the statements “Rewayats” of the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them).

In the same way, the historical facts also cannot get the same degree of trust that is enjoyed by the statements “Rewayats” of the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them) approved in the light of perfect certification by Sunnah or the Holy Quran Kareem. (Page-15)

A lot of research work is available on this topic by our Islamic scholars. Those who are willing for further research and study in this regard, must read particularly the Urdu books mentioned below:

1. “Muqam-e-Sahaba” by Moulana Mufti Md. Shafee Usmani

2. “Shawahad-e-Taqaddus” by Moulana Md. Mian Deobandi (May Allah be pleased with him)

3.  “Hazrat Mu’awiah (May Allah be Pleased with him) aur Tareekhee Haqaeq” by Mufti Md. Taqee Usmani

4. Waqi’a-e-Karbala aur uska pas-manzar” by Moulana A’teequr-Rahman Sambhalee No’amani

Arif Mohammad Khan has not presented any new research rather it is a rehash of the write-up of Maulana Abul A’la Maududi in his book “Khilafat wa Malookiat”. At certain places, he has used his own words and expressions without referring to that. The people who doubt the honesty of the Sahaba-e-Karam (May Allah be Pleased with them), must introspect about their own honesty and character.

Thanks very much indeed for your compliments. May God bless you! The venom in the debates on NewAgeIslam.com has surprised me as much as it has shocked you. This is merely indicative of the venom in the community. Our sojourn in the land of pointlessness. It probably explains why we are gradually becoming irrelevant to the world, even as it tries hard to destroy us and our faith by using people from within us.  (Sultan Shaheen)  (The hidden hypocrite in defence of exposed  THIEF Jamshed Basha)

@ Sultan Shaheen....the hidden Hypocrite

The real ring Master ...Editor NewageIslam.com.....You are an hypocrite par excellence ...you sit over the venom spitting stolen article by Jamshed Basha  for months and when you see the hits to NewageIslam.com is dwindling  due to your own dirty habit of posting messages under different names came to be known by all,  you suddenly decide to post the stolen article by Jamshed Basha...and further promote your  actual profession of a ring master ...to excite passions and then enjoy the mudslinging, name callings,  then  from time to time you blow the whistle, and pretend to play the role of good God fearing Muslim ...come out in the open and this time under your real Name Sultan Shaheen and shout at the top of your voice hey! Hey! All you Muslims don’t fight don’t fight.....Your character reminds me of the Mean and scheming Bullies when I was in Junior  School who use to cook stories and make even friends fight, and then try to become good in the eyes of the school administration by pretending to be the good guy, You are like Muslims who run a liquor shop and never forget to remind Muslims that consumption of liquor is prohibited in Islam,  But here you are forgetting that unlike the School administration,  Allah swt  Knows all that transpires in the heart of one’s heart and Hypocrites are ones whom Allah swt look down upon and has  reserved a special place in hell for them.

You claim to be a good Muslim...and sometime back,  like an Idiot or an Ignorant fool,  you called for abrogation or declaring obsolete certain verses from the Holy Quran  Nauzbillah’ (Lanat Bhejtin Hun Mai tumhare jaise Musalmano pe jo Quran ki AYAT me hee fer badal ki soch sakte hain)

Earlier you ridiculed and chided about the Babri Masjid demolition ...yet you have the face of calling yourself a Muslim.....Shame on you sultan Shaheen for vacillating between Faith and Ignorance all for vested interests.

Ps: Allah swt is hidden from our vision the Prophet pbuh Introduced us to the Supreme Being, and we took his word for it, The same Prophet Pbuh Introduced us to the gift of ‘IMAMAT’  from  the supreme being and again we took his word for it. Only those unfortunate among us do not see the truth, whose vision is either blocked by the devil or those who are too concerned and engrossed in their worldly profits, such as Sultan Shaheen and other hypocrites. Who really have no faith to call as their own they, just pretend from time to time, as it suits their purpose.

dear mughal sahab, u take real pains in supplying such fine print sort of information.

to cut long story short... the worth of any medicine is judged by it's healing powers !!!

kindly see it by yourself that oner version of faith enables self respect, self sufficiency and admission to space club.. and the hallmark characteristic of character as displayed by their untainted support for the oppressed of the world ( this version is practiced by just one nation among all muslim states all over the globe)

on the other hand the other version practiced by the 90 % majority muslim states is not bringing them peace and happiness ; forget the self sufficiency and awe n respect in the eyes of the world's other nations..

denial is a trap friend.. it punishes .. kindly think of getting rid of all potholes and search for a common way to exist as a strong muslim ummah.. but before this is possible, please acknowlege past mistakes..( offcourse not done by us or even our 7 generations before us) but the moment we support past mistakes ( some real and some imagined too) we unknowingly become part of ngativity..BILA WAJAH KOYLE KI DALALI ME HAATH KYON KAALE KAREN? pichhle logon pe yeh ilzam ( jhoota ya sachha ) hai to ke unhone duniya paane ko compromise kar liya.. hamari generation se to woh chhin hi chuki hai aur aqebat hum khud kharab kar lenge...

let us not abuse anyone because it is really impossible to visualize the exact frame of mind of the persons doing certain actions many centuries back.. god is there to judge , reward or punish..

but out of all debates we surely require a way out... kindly all of us get rid of our bias and sit together honestly to find a respectable way for our existence.. islam and it's followers because of multiple reasons are already at the NADIR of it's entire history..

wakeup.. and design a workable model.. but remember donot bypass Ahlul bait this time

regards

============================

Dear Tabrez Sahab,

For your kind perusal,

Tabarrah means ''Tabarra means acquitall, washing one's hands from something, repudiation, moving away, distancing oneself, etc. etc.'' (actually it what it means in the dictionary...of course that's not they actually do), ''cursing is also Tabarrah'', ''Tabarra can also mean to express disgust''

The author above is lying through his teeth because authentic Shia books [Persian and its English Translation] is as under to judge:

"QUOTE"

Usool al- Kafi that is a collection narrations and traditions attributed to the Shiite Imams, Ahlul Bayt and the Prophet. Al-Kafi is the MOST reliable Shia Book, as the reliable Shia Scholars said and declared . Its author is Thiqat al-Islam Muhamad Ibn Yaqoob AlKulayni (A VERY reliable Shia Scholar, died in 328 H). Some Shi'ites scholars believe usool Al-Kafi was presented to the legendary Imam Qaem who liked it and said: "It suffices our Shi'ites" (al-Tharee'ah ela Tasaneef al-Shi'a: Agha Buzurg al-Tahraani; vol.17, p.245)

Sahabah (R.H) became infidel by denying the divine right (Wilayat) of Hazrat Ali. First three caliph and other Sahabas became infidel by denying the divine right of (Wilayat) of Hazrat Ali. (Al Kafi, Page No. 420)

Nuri Tibiris, one of the most renowned Shi'ite scholars and mujtahids, wrote a book against the present Quran. The book is entitled: 'Faslul Khitab Fi Tahreefi-Kitabi Rabbil Arbaab' (The Final Verdict on the Distortion of the Book of the Lord of Lords).

Khomeini mentions this scholar with great respect in his own book 'A1Hukumatul Islamiyah" (The Islamic State). In fact, Khomeini has actually used Nuri Tibiris's work entitled "Mustadrakul Wasail" to complete his theory of Wilayatul Faqih. [Wilayatul Faqih is the Islamic jurist's right to overrule a ruling that contradicts Islamic law.]

Khomeini writes about Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Omar (R.A.):

"Those people who, in their envy to rule, attached themselves to the Deen of the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) and formed their own cliques could not possibly refrain from their actions on the bases of Quranic advice. They had to materialise their aims at any cost." (Kashful Asraar: 114)

He also writes:

'Those who had no affiliation with the Quran and Islam except through their desire for the world and power. They had made the Qurun a vehicle to promote their agenda. (Ibid)

In his book Kashful Asraar, Khomeni has dedicated a whole chapter to Hazrat Abu Bakr's opposition to the Quran and another chapter to the Omar's opposition. (Ibid: 114 & 117)

He has then continued to write a chapter on how to answer the critiques of the Ahlus Sunnah W'al Jama'ah with the heading: "An eye on the answers of the foolish." (Ibid: 120)

Khomeni writes about Hazrat Uthman (R.A.):

"We worship and recognise only that God Whose actions are based on concrete rationalism and Who does not rule against that rationalism. We do not worship a god who creates a building for Divine worship and justice and then strives to destroy that very building himself by giving authority to rascals like Yazid, Mu'awiyah and Uthman". (Ibid: 107)

Mullah Muhammed bin Yaqoob Kulaini, the most prominent Shi'ite scholar of Hadith, quotes

Imam Baqir as saying:

'People became apostates after the death of the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam), except for three people: Miqdad ibn Aswad, Abu Dharr Ghifari and Salmaan Farsi.' He continues:

'Abu Bakr and Omar did not repent before they parted the world. In fact, they did not even mention what they had done to Ali. So may Allah, His angels and all of mankind curse them. (Furu'ul Kafi: Kitabul Rauda: 115)

Mullah Baqir writes:

'Regarding the doctrine of' 'Tabarri' we believe that we should seek disassociation from four idols namely, Abu Bakr, Omar, Uthman and Mu'awiyah; from four women namely, Ayesha, Hafsa, Hind and Ummul Hakam, along with all their associates and followers. 'These are the worst creation of Allah. It is not possible to believe in Allah, His Messenger and the Imams without disassociating oneself from their enemies. (Haqqul Yaqeen: 2:519)

[The doctrine of 'Tabarri' means to have no association with the enemies of Allah.]

Mullah Baqir writes:

'One should say after each prayer: O Allah! Curse Abu Bakr, Omar, Uthman, Mu'awiyah, Ayesha, Hafsa, Hind and Ummul Hakam. (Aynul Hayat: 599)

The Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam), came to a person from the Ansaar and asked him if he had any food. The Ansaari said he had and slaughtered a goat. The man then grilled some meat and presented it to the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) who wished that Ali, Fathima, Hasan and Hussain were present with him. Then Abu Bakr and Omar arrived. Ali also arrived shortly after. Allah then revealed the verse:

'We have never sent any messenger prophet or Muhaddath before except that when ever they desired something, the devil interfered in their desire.' (The Prophet then said) This is just as the devil has sent his two agents here right now (Abu Bakr and Omar). (The footnotes of Maqbool's translation: Surah Hajj: 674)

[Muhaddath is a non-prophet but he is inspired by Allah]

Mullah Baqir Majlisi writes:

'Pharaoh and Hamaan refer here to Abu Bakr and Omar. (Haqqul Yaqeen: 342)

The same author also says:

'The references in big books about the illegitimate birth of Omar cannot be discussed in this book. (Ibid: 259)

Allah says in Surah Nahl (90):

"And He prevents you from immorality, unlawfulness and rebellion.'

Ali ibn Ibrahim AI-Qummi comments on this verse:

'These three vices refer to so and so, so and so and so and so.' (Al Qummi's commentary: 218)

Any ambiguity is cleared by the following comment: 'Immorality refers to the first person (Abu Bakr); unlawfulness refers to the second (Omar) and rebellion refers to the third (Uthman). (Footnotes to Maqbool's translation: 522)

Mullah Baqir narrates a story from Imam Zainul Abideen that a man came to the Imam and asked him to inform him about Abu Bakr and Omar. The Imam informed him that they were both non-believers. (Haqqul Yaqeen: 551)

All The Sahaba Kiraam Radiyallahu Anhum Are Kaafirs and Apostates (Na'udhu billah).

The shi'ite scholor of Hadith, Ni' matullah Jazaa-i-rii writes in the 'Anwaare nomaaniyyah' page 245, vol.2.: "The shia Imaamiyyah are of the opinion that the khilafah of Hazrat Ali (Radiyallahhu Anhu) is by nassi jalli (clear text) and all the sahabah (Radiyallahu Anhum), are kafirs, and continue to slander them. They (shias) believe in the imaamah of Jafar Sadiq, (Rehmatullah Alayhi), and his sinless offspring. The author of this book belongs to this group and only this sect is successful and saved (from jahannum). Abii Jafar (Imaam Baqir) says that after Rasulullah, (Sallalahu Alayhi Wasallam), all the sahaba became murtid (turn apostate) apart from these: Miqdad Bin Aswad, abu Zar Ghafari and Salaman Farsi (Radiyallahu Anhum). They refused to make Bayah (pay allegiance) to (Sayyidinaa) Abu Bakr, (Radiyallahu Anhu), until they called Amirul Momineen. He made Bayah. Then the three of them also made bayah. Hence all agreed upon the khilaafah of (Sayyidina) Abu Bakr. [Usol-e-kafi, vol.2.; Raudah kaafi, page246; Rijal Kashi, page 504.]

MORE ABOUT SHIA'ISM AND SAHAABAH :

The most authentic book of theology of Shi'ism is Al-Jamiul Kafi. In this book in the section, Kitabur Raudha', the following narration is attributed to the fifth Shi', Imam:

"After Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) all people became murtads (reneged from Islam) except three persons - Miqdad Bin Aswad, Abu Tharr Ghifari and Salman Farsi Radiallahu Anhum wabarakatuhum). "

In the Shi'i book, Kitabur Raudhah, the following narration is attributed to Imam Baqir who allegedly made the statement in reply to his disciple who had sought the Imam's opinion regarding Hadhrat Abu Bakr and Hadhrat Umar (Radiallahu Anhuma)

"What are you asking me about them (Abu Bakr and Umar)? Whoever among us (i.e. the Ahle Bait or the progeny of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) departed from this world, departed in a state of extreme displeasure with them. The elders among us admonished the younger ones to perpetuate it (i.e. this displeasure with Abu Bakr and Umar), Verily, the two of them have unjustly usurped our right. By Allah! These two were the first to settle on our necks (i.e. the necks of the Ahle Bait). Therefore, may the la'nat (curse) of Allah, the Malaikah and of mankind be on the two of them. (Kitabur Raudhah, Page 115)

In the same book, on the same page appears the following:

"Verily. these two elders (Abu Bakr and Umar) departed from this world without having made taubah for what they had perpetrated against Ameerul Mumineen Alayhis Salaam. In fact, they did not even think of us (of their wrongs against Hadhrat Ali). Therefore, the la'nat of Allah, the Malaikah and of mankind be on them."

In the Shiah book, Rijal Kashi, Hadhrat Abu Bakr and Hadhrat Umar (Radiallahu Anhuma) are denigrated in the following narration attributed to Imam Baqir:

"Whatever murder is committed in Islam, whatever unlawful wealth is earned and whatever adultery is committed until the appearance of our Imam Mahdi - the sin of all this is on the necks of the two (i.e. Abu Bakr and Umar). (Rijal Kashi, page 135)

In Kitabur Raudhah on pages 159/160, the Shiahs attribute a narration to Hadhrat Salman Farsi (Radiallahu Anhu) in which it is claimed that on the occasion when the oath of allegiance was given to Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radiallahu Anhu), the first person to swear allegiance to him was an old man who stepped forward crying:

"All praise to Allah who has not caused me to die yet, enabling me to see you on this pedestal. Stretch your hand. " Thus he (Abu Bakr) stretched his hand and the old man took the oath of allegiance (at his hand)."

According to the narration, when Hadhrat Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) heard this from Hadhrat Salman (Radiallahu Anhu), he asked:

"Do you know who he (the old man who took the oath of allegiance) is?"

When Salman (Radiallahu Anhu) replied in the negative, Hadhrat Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) allegedly said:

"That was Iblees, Allah has cursed him."

Thus, according to Shi'ism, the first being who accepted the Khilafat of Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radiallahu Anhu) was Iblees who placed his hand in the hand of Hadhrat Abu Bakr (Radiallahu Anhu).

At the end of this narration in Kitabur Raudhah, the following words are attributed by the Shi'i priests to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

"Then, they (a group of the Saqeefah Bani Saidah) will come to the Musjid (i.e. Musjid-e-Nabawi) and the first to swear allegiance to him (i.e. Abu Bakr) on my Mimbar will be Iblees, the La'nat of Allah on him. Iblees will appear (on that occasion) in the form of an old man and say so (i.e. what Salman Faarsi has allegedly said)."

Mullah Baqir Majlisi is a renowned personality in Shiah circles. He is regarded as a top-ranking Muhaddith. He flourished in the 10th century of the Hijri era. The Shi'i clergy has accorded him the title, Khatamul Muhadditheen (the seal of the Muhadditheen). His works are regarded as highly authoritative by the Shiah priests. Khomeini has praised and recommended his writings. This Shi'i priest, in his books, writes the following statements whenever he mentions the name of Hadhrat Umar (Radiallahu Anhu)

"Umar Bin Khattab - on him be la'nat (curse) and athab (punishment).

QURAN AS PER SHIA SCHOLARS.

The Shiites assert that the existing Quran must have been altered, since there is no reference to any of their strayed beliefs in it. One of the first to explicitly state this view was Mirza Hussein Muhammad Taqiy al-Noori al-Tabrasi (d. 1320 AH) in his book The Final Verdict on the Distortion of the Book of the Lord of Lords. [Faslul Khitab Fi Tahreefi-Kitabi Rabbil Arbaab].

Original Quran will not come into view till the manifestation of Imam Mehdi (SHIAs 12th Imam) (Na’uzubillah). [Anwaar-ul-Na' umania, Vol 2, Pg 360 - Published Iran]

Collectors of Quran eliminated virtues of Prophet’s progeny from Surah Al-Ahzab which was about to the length of Surah Al-Bakrah.[Haq- ul-Yaqeen, Pg 66 - Published Iran]

The Munafiqeen (i.e. Sahaba) took very much out of Quran (took out the verses). (Ihtijaj-e-tibri, page #382).

When Imaam Mehdi comes he will bring with him the real and original Quran. (Ahsan-ul-maqaal, page #336, safdar Husain najfi).

The person who says that the present Quran is complete is a liar because the “complete Quran†was compiled by Hazrat Ali. (Fasl-ul-khitaab fee tahreef kitaab rab-ul- arbab, page #4, Noori Tibri).

"Abu Baseer reported that he said to Imam Ja'far, "O Abu Abdullah (Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq) What is Mus-haf Fatimah?" He replied "It is a Qur'an containing three times what is found in your copy of the Qur'an; yet by Allah, it does not contain even a single letter from your Qur'an. (Al-Kafi vol.1 p.457)

No one possess complete knowledge of Holy Qur'an except Imams. (Al Kafi, Vol. No. 1, Page No. 228)

Please excuse me for copy/paste but I sincerely feel, that I should share this with all the good readers out there.....  THE PEACE AND JUSTICE FOUNDATION 11006 Veirs Mill Rd, STE L-15, PMB 298 Silver Spring, MD. 20902 Saffar 1430 AH (February 1, 2009) Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace): This year, 1430 AH (2009 CE) marks the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Republic of Iran. WE SALUTE YOU [Syeda Kanzeez]

======================

Dear Ms Kaneez,

For your kind perusal,

On Islamic Republic of Iran!

Grand Ayatollah Mussa Sadr:

The Iranian born leader of the Lebanese Shia was revered and respected above all others in the Shia world. He re- fused to accept Ruhollah Khomeini as an ayatollah and with the influence Mussa Sadr enjoyed, he became an insurmountable obstacle to Khomeini's political plans, and of those who supported the over- throw of the Shah and needed a despot like Khomeini to be their cat's paw.

Grand Ayatollah Sadr's mysterious disappearance in Libya – his body was never found – opened the way for Khomeini to “invade” Iran, which accurately describes the action of a foreign national taking over a country in which he was neither born nor had any Persian blood in his veins at all, paternally or maternally. While one devout Iranian in California speaks of Khomeini reverently as a “great man, similar to Hitler”, other less friendly Persians liken him to an invader like Genghis Khan, the Mongol scourge.

Unable to strike at the hardliners on an uneven playing field, the “reformers” have now begun an all-out assault on their former clerical allies. The cornerstone and founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, from which the present leaders draw their legitimacy to govern, was Khomeini and the structure, which he put in place. How- ever, there is compelling evidence that Ruhollah Khomeini was never an Iranian in the first place and had no right to inflict his policies on the Iranian people. Nor was his elevation to the title of ayatollah anything more than a political, face-saving expediency to prevent his being hanged for treason in 1964.

Considerable effort was made in 1979 to eradicate evidence of any record of either Khomeini's Non-Iranian origins and the source of his use of the title of ayatollah, and one of the first actions which Khomeini took, within hours of his return to Iran after the Shah left, was to execute two prominent men who were living proof of his origin and also of his false ayatollah status. One of these was Gen. Hassan Pakravan, Head of SAVAK, the Imperial Iranian national intelligence and security organization.

Furthermore he immediately tried to assassinate the highly respected Ayatollah Shariatmadari, who, with Ayatollah Golpayegani, had in 1964 granted Khomeini the false title. They had agreed to allow Khomeini —then literally awaiting death on charges of treason — to be called an ayatollah to save his life: it was forbidden to execute an ayatollah. This took place in 1964 at the urging of the British Ambassador to Iran and Gen. Pakravan, when a face-saving legal reason had to be found not to hang Khomeini for treason. It is known that Pakravan had fought hard to avoid Khomeini's execu- tion at that time.

Later, when the 1979 assassination attempt failed against Shariatmadari, Shariatmadari, far higher in the religious hierarchy than Khomeini, was placed, in- communicado and under house arrest, without the right to preach or receive visitors other than a handful of close relatives, whose anti-Khomeini statements could be easily impugned as biased.

Recent reports from Tehran showed the death fatwa (religious edict or opinion) issued against British author Salman Rushdi by Khomeini for writing an “anti-Islamic” book and cancelled a few years ago, had been reinstated to warn journalists or writers the clerics cannot directly control, that they risked death at the hands of devout Moslem fanatics if they uttered a word against the rulers in Iran or weakened their standing by revealing the illegitimate provenance of their power and thus contest their right to impose their theocratic despotism on a reluctant people.

Few contest that Khomeini's mother was a Kashmiri Indian, but even fewer Iranians or otherwise know his father's origins or his real name. The late Iranian Senator Moussavi, who represented Khuzestan Province in Southern Iran, at the time of the monarchy, knew Khomeini's father and his four sons well, looked after their needs, used his influence to obtain their Iranian identity cards with fictitious dates and places of birth to avoid military service. Sen. Moussavi died for this help, on Khomeini's personal orders, immediately on this mullah's return from France after the 1979 coup.

SAVAK chief Gen. Pakravan, the man who saved Khomeini's life in 1964, was taken that same night onto the roof of his house and shot to death for having compiled a complete background file on Khomeini. The SAVAK background file still exists, as a senior SAVAK official who defected and joined SAVAMA (the clerics' equivalent of the SAVAK) took possession of it. This same man was reportedly head of SAVAMA in the US for quite some time, and sources indicate that he has kept the file “for a rainy day”.

Why did Khomeini return to Iran with such a bloodthirsty mind set? It seems clear that it was to exact the revenge which he said he would have. Prior to his return to Iran in 1979, Khomeini openly stated that he would kill as many Iranians he considered everyone in Iran guilty in advance as there were hairs on the head of his son, killed in a car accident, but in his mind killed by Iranian authorities.

Unable to provide an acceptable paternal background for Khomeini, a story was concocted to link his paternal heritage to that of his Kashmiri Indian mother and introduced an Indian-born father (also from Kashmir) but of Iranian heritage. In fact, no such person existed. But someone with similar and misleading characteristics certainly did, which could lend credence to this fiction of an Indian father.

Khomeini's real father, William Richard Williamson, was born in Bristol, England, in 1872 of British parents and lineage. This detail is based on first-hand evidence from a former Iranian employee of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (later British Petroleum: BP), who worked with and met the key players of this saga. This fact was supported by the lack of a denial in 1979 by Col. Archie Chisholm, a BP political officer and former editor at The Financial Times, when interviewed on the subject at his home in County Cork, Ireland, by a British newspaper.

The then-78-year old Chisholm stated: “I knew Haji [as Williamson was later known] well; he worked for me. He certainly went native – but whether he is Khomeini's father I could not say.”

Would not an outright, ridiculing denial have been the natural response, were there no truth to the British paternity? From Someone Who Knew Haji And Thus The Truth Well?

Chisholm obviously wished to avoid a statement leading to political controversy or possible personal retribution in the very year Khomeini took over in Iran. Nor as a former, experienced political officer himself would he be willing to drag Britain into the new Middle East conflict. But neither was he prepared to provide an outright lie instead of his “no comment”.

How it all happened: A stocky, handsome, dark-haired Bristol boy, Richard Williamson ran away to sea at the age of 13 as a cabin boy, on a ship bound for Australia. However, he jumped ship before he got there. Little is known about him until he showed up, at the age of 20, in Aden at the Southern end of the Arabian Peninsula in South Yemen, where he joined the local police force.

His good looks soon had Sultan Fazl bin-Ali, ruler of Lahej, persuading him to quit the police force to live with him. Richard later left him for another Sheikh, Youssef Ebrahim, a relative of the Al- Sabah family, which rules Kuwait today.

A few points should be remembered about the Persian Gulf and Arabian Peninsula area at that time.

Regional countries like Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia and so forth did not exist as sovereign entities and were artificially created about 70 years ago by the British and French governments when they partitioned the area. Iran, or Persia as it was called, was soon to be controlled by Russian Cossacks in the North and the British Army in the South, although technically it remained an independent monarchy under the largely absentee Qajar dynasty.

British military presence in Iran was under Lt.-Col. Sykes (later Sir Percy Sykes), based in Shiraz, but politically con- trolled by Sir Arnold Wilson in Khorramshahr (then called Moham-mareh) with assistance from E. Elkington in Masjid-Suleiman and Dr Young, based in Ahwaz. All three were cities in Khuzestan Province, which was later rep- resented by Senator Moussavi. Col. T.E. Lawrence, who gained fame as “Lawrence of Arabia”, operated out of Basra in Mesopotamia (Iraq) and Khorramshahr during this same period.

Oilfields, far beyond the technological capability of the Arab tribes (or Persia) to develop or appreciate as a valuable commodity, were being discovered and ex- ploited by the British, including via the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, formed to siphon off oil from Khuzestan Province in Southern Iran.

Kuwait, on the other side of the Persian Gulf was still not a country at the time. As the major player in the Middle East oil industry, Britain had to exert influence and control through its political and oil personnel. Haji Abdollah Williamson became one of these in 1924 when he joined British Petroleum as political officer. He retired under that same name in 1937, at the age of 65.

Earlier, in what is now Kuwait, Richard Williamson had very quickly converted to Islam and adopted the first name of Abdollah. Family names were still unusual and “son of the son of ” or “son of a type of worker or craftsman” was still commonly used to identify people. For 14 years he had lived among the Bedouin tribes on the Arabian Peninsula and in 1895 and 1898 he went on pilgrimages to Mecca, took on the rightful title of Haji and took on his first benefactor's name of Fazl, adding Zobeiri to it as a distinguisher. Thus William Richard Williamson became Haji Abdollah Fazl Zobeiri.

During his service with British Petroleum in the Persian Gulf, Haji Abdollah took his vacations in Indian Kashmir, to rest from the relentless Gulf heat and in this timeframe married at least seven times — to Arab and Indian women — each under Muslim marriage rituals. He sired 13 children of whom seven were boys and the rest girls with most of the children dying in early childhood.

His repeated Kashmir excursions and Indian wives and use of the name Abdollah Fazl Zobeiri probably give rise to the “Kashmir Indian” father misconception. With dark-haired Haji Abdollah a fanatically devout Muslim, a characteristic he imposed on his children, this fervent religious attitude and Arab nomenclature would not normally be an expected combination for a foreigner, especially an Englishman.

He insisted his four surviving sons attend religious school in Najaf (in Iraq) under the tutelage of Ayatollahs Yazdi (meaning of the city of Yazd) and Shirazi (of the city of Shiraz). Two of them, Hindizadeh (meaning Indian born) and Passandideh (meaning pleasing or approved) studied well and eventually became ayatollahs in their own right.

The third boy, a troublesome young man, failed to make his mark in Najaf and went to the Iranian holy city of Qom, where he studied under Ayatollah Boroujerdi. When family names became a requirement by law under His Majesty Reza Shah, the young man chose the city of his residence — Khomein — as the designator and took on the name Khomeini (meaning “of Khomein”).

The fourth son hated theology and went across the Persian Gulf to Kuwait and opened up two gas (petrol) stations using the paternal family name of Haji Ali Williamson, though it is unclear if he ever performed the Haj pilgrimage. This in itself links Khomeini — through that brother — with Haji Williamson. Why, otherwise, would Rouhallah Khomeini's undisputed brother use the Williamson family name?

The patriarch of this brood, Haji Abdollah Fazl Zobeiri (aka Haji Abdollah Williamson in BP), was thrown out of Iran by Reza Shah along with three other British political officers for anti-Iranian activity and joined his son in Kuwait. Here he took on the duties of Oil Distribution for the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company.

With his longstanding contacts in the Arab world and his Muslim religion, he forced a 50/50 agreement between US oil interests in Kuwait and the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company as well as in 1932 pursuing the exclusive exploration rights for British Petroleum in Abu Dhabi.

His lack of a formal education forced British Petroleum to send out Archie H. T. Chisholm, a senior executive, to conclude the Abu Dhabi contract and together with Haji Abdollah's political influence they overcame competition from Major Frank Holmes, Sheikh Hussein and Mohammad Yateen to successfully land the exclusive contract. Chisholm, as he said, got to know Khomeini's father well.

Back in Iran again in 1960, Khomeini saw an opportunity to exact revenge for his father having been thrown out of Iran and to impose his Islamic fundamentalist philosophy onto an Iran struggling with budget problems, caused mostly by its oil being in the control of foreign oil companies, which decided — not Iran — how much oil the country was allowed to produce and at what price it had to be sold.

With his own and his family's theological background, he began to foment an anti-monarchy revolt through the mosques, which by 1964 resulted in imposition of martial law and finally with his arrest and his being sentenced to death by hanging. And consequently being given the life-saving ayatollah title, which he had not earned.

After formally being exiled to Turkey, he ended up in Iraq where he wrote some philosophical and social behavior dissertations, which were so bizarre by religious standards that, where possible, the tracts were bought up and destroyed by the Iranian Government when he took over in 1979. The most damning were in Arabic language versions and then later, “cleaner” texts appeared as edited translations in Farsi.

Some linguists, who studied his public speeches in 1979 and 1980, concluded his Farsi vocabulary to be less than 200 words, so not only did he not have Persian blood, he did not even speak the language. With the number of Iranians who have died be- cause of him and his successors over the past 25 years going into the hundreds of thousands, if not well over a million if the death toll from the eight-year Iran-Iraq war is included, this Anglo-Indian with Arab Sunni Muslim theological and philosophical roots may have had no love or compassion for Iranians either.

In the Iran Air aircraft flying Khomeini back from France to Tehran in early 1979, with cameras rolling, a journalist asked: “What do you feel about returning to Iran?” He replied: “Nothing!” The question was repeated, and again he replied: “Nothing!”
