Islam after Osama

By Javed Anand

May 04 2011

Behind the ugly reality there’s poetic justice. Osama bin Laden was finally bearded in the world’s most happening terror den: Pakistan. Osama is no more but who does not know that the cult of violence that he practised and preached in Islam’s name is alive and kicking in Pakistan like nowhere else. This column, however, is about Osama’s unintended gift to post-9/11 Islam.

Step back just a decade and you’d think that Muslims engaged with the paradigm of “Islam and Modernity” were few and far between. The dominant voices in the world of 20th century Islam, especially the latter half, were those of Syed Abu Ala Maududi, founder of the Jamaat-e-Islami in the subcontinent; Syed Qutb, leading theologian of the Muslim Brotherhood; and Mohammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, who gave birth to Wahhabism, the rigid, intolerant Islam of Saudi Arabia.

Born and bred as a devout Wahhabi in Saudi Arabia, it was easy for Osama to embrace the shared belief of Maududi and Qutb that all man-made ideas and systems — pan-Arabism, democracy, socialism, communism — were bankrupt; that only Shariah law ruthlessly enforced by an Islamic state could restore divine order in the world. Thanks to an intermix of Wahhabism, Qutbism and Maududiat, what would otherwise have been an Afghan national liberation movement against the occupying Soviet forces in the 1980s turned into a laboratory of violent, global jihad. Osama was the most lethal product of this cross-fertilisation. And then there was 9/11, al-Qaeda’s own welcome message to the 21st century and the new millennium.

Call it Hegelian dialectics: thesis-antithesis-synthesis. Some among Muslims rejoiced over this “humiliation” of the only global superpower (so soon after the mujahids had facilitated the demise of the rival superpower). Others insisted 9/11 was a mean CIA-Mossad conspiracy to fan Islamophobia. But saner members of the Ummah were horrified that such a monstrosity could be committed in the name of a faith that literally means peace. The poison that Osama and al-Qaeda injected into Islam found its antidote within Islam. Thank you, Hegel.

“Islam was hijacked on 9/11,” declared the American convert Sheikh Hamza Yusuf. The UK-based Ziauddin Sardar was as prompt in issuing “My fatwa on the fanatics.” With such opening salvo, the last decade saw an ever growing number of Muslim voices eager not only to reclaim their faith from the extremists, but also, in the words of Sardar, to “rebuild Islam, brick-by-brick”.

Though Osama has now been rendered inactive, the terror machine is yet to be dismantled, the theology of violent jihad yet to be pushed out of the marketplace of ideas. But there are reasons to nurture hope. You can today build a small personal library for yourself just with books titled Seeds of Terror, The Nuclear Jihadist, Terror in the Name of God, Sacred Rage, Talibanisation of Pakistan, Descent into Chaos and so on. But should you feel so inclined, you’ll need to multiply shelf-space several times over to add books and videos infused with the spirit of New Age Islam.

A decade ago, the theologians of a tolerant, plural, gender-just, rights- and freedom-friendly, pro-democracy Islam were few in number. Today, not only is the tribe of their followers growing rapidly, but an ever-increasing number of Muslim men and women are also reading and interpreting the Quran and the Tradition of the Prophet in sync with modern sensibilities.

Sadly, we aren’t yet familiar with them in India. But they are important, influential names across much of the world. The US-based Shaikh Khaled Abou El Fadl, for example, is a strong proponent of human rights, a staunch advocate of gender equality and is amongst the most critical and powerful voices against puritan and Wahhabi Islam today. Then there is Hamza Yusuf, co-founder of Zaytuna College, Berkeley, US. Jordan’s Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre places him on its list of the top 50 most influential Muslims in the world. The magazine Egypt Today described him as a kind of theological rock star, “the Elvis Presley of western Muslims”.

Or, take Tariq Ramadan, the UK-based author of Radical Reform. An online poll by Foreign Policy magazine in 2009 placed Ramadan on the 49th spot on a list of the world’s top 100 contemporary intellectuals. And let’s not forget Amina Wadud, Islamic feminist, imam, and author of Inside the Gender Jihad. In March 1995, she stirred up quite a storm in the Muslim world after leading a Friday prayer of over 100 male and female Muslims in New York.

In the first year of the 21st century, Osama stretched the dominant Islamic thought of the 20th century to its extreme. A decade later, there is a growing body of books, lectures and pages of the World Wide Web propounding an Islam that is at home with the modern world and vice versa. And in the last few months, such intellectuals and scholars have struck common ground with the masses on the streets of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain. Osama must have had many nightmares in his last days of hiding.

Dear Sadaf/sadaf

I read your response with much interest and some amusement. However, I remember replying to most of the responses to my posts. I might have missed some, but I do not remember if I have not answered " when faced with tough questions about the absurdities in his beliefs". If it is within the scheme of your strategy of "reply only once in a while", you could point out those posts and I will Inshallah try within the best of my abilities to answer your "tough" questions.

Even if you find it difficult to accept, I am not being paid by Janasanghis as I am sure you or Mr Ghulam Mohiyuddin are not being paid by Lashkar e toiba. Trusting that you will reply while still being bound by your strategy for dealing with "propagandists", I welcome your strategically sparse but "tough questions about the absurdities in" my "belief". Regards

Mr.Sadaf, you are right. Thanks.

Many Muslims feel that since Osama is dead they will be victimised because their godfather is no more. We must support the fact that Osama did not represent  Islam and Muslims, his act was just the opposite of what Islam means: peace and submission. He never created peace and he tried to make the west submit to him and not to God. I heard in a news channel that he had 5 wives, in some other news, 381. Whatever it was I do not know but it was not even according to the Islamic law. And yet he and many Muslims considered him an exemplary Muslim. What a pity!

Car 313 and Satwa are typical Jansanghi characters. I won’t be surprised if I get to know that this guy Car 313 is on RSS payroll; even Satwa too. However Satwa is inferior to Car 313. Car 313 is much smart and people like him needs to be handled smartly. He should not be replied for each and every mail and this should be the general strategy to handle such people as I noticed the smartness of this guy that he doesn’t reply when faced with tough questions about the absurdities in his beliefs.  He has devised the strategy to write on each article only a little bit every time to exhaust Mr. Ghulam as he replies to all of his comments. Car 313 doesn't reply to me for the reason that I did not reply to his postings whenever I find it not worthy enough.

In a typical propagandist way, he wants to silence the other voice by bombarding falsity everywhere in typical carpet bombing ways and in order to meet the requirement of doing it, in each article he has adopted the strategy of minimum words for each response.

While propaganda must be countered, it does not require using up all talents. He should be left to receive reply only once in a while, when he comes up with something that has never been heard of. At other times either he will be replied by someone or the other however unconvincing those reply may be. Those unconvincing replies or no reply or once in a while reply will serve the purpose in many ways. Car 313 will get back response in his coins with unconvincing replies and in case he does not get any reply at all then he will get bored, because in any case he is not going to change his mind just the same way as some people don’t do who have their hearts sealed. It will also give time to serious writer to discuss ‘the war within’ instead of wasting the precious reading and writing time on someone who is a professional distracter.  There is actually no dearth of them; they are everywhere.

However he shouldn’t be bored to death actually, because he is needed to galvanize non-thinking brains which feed on Cow’s meat and store fats in their brain cells, and after which they fight amongst themselves. Some of the galvanized minds might pick up the pen to counter the propaganda or at least start feeling the need to do so.  Else the lazy bums are just OK that Mr. Ghulam is already there to take care of the issues.

So a little balancing is needed and one should not get distracted as that is for what this struggle is about. Propagandist must be replied, but by conserving energy.  They should also be not weaned off, but be used to provoke and awaken those who are needed to be woken up.  A propagandist’s energy must be utilized the way a matador handles the bull.

Western Media’s Crusade Against IslamAs the Western governments add fuel to the fire of Islamophobic sentiments in their societies with inflammatory and rabble-rousing actions and statements, the Western media mischievously try their best to portray a lopsided, biased and prejudiced image of Muslims in an attempt whichshould be interpreted as an incontestable crusade against more than 25% of the world population.

Although it is arguable that the 9/11 attacks played into the hands of the United States and its European cronies to spread an all-encompassing wave of Islamophobic sentiments in the world and introduce the Muslims as the number one threat to the global peace and security, one should bear in mind that Muslims have been conventionally considered as the villains of the fables of the Western governments and despite their unquestionable and treasured services to the world, they never received a fair, justifiable and humane treatment by the superpowers, either from the deceitful, fraudulent and warmonger Russia that massacred some 50,000 innocent Muslims in Chechnya, or from the arrogant, bullying United States that incarcerated scores of innocent Muslims in its illegal, underground detention centers in Guantanamo bay and Abu Ghraib following the 9/11 attacks.

Corporate mainstream media have been the most effectual and trenchant wing of the Western governments in their crusade against the Muslims and the Islamic world. When it was needed to conceal the most conspicuous realities which would attest to the righteousness of the Muslims, the mainstream media did their best: Marwa El-Sherbini was flagrantly murdered in a courtroom in Germany, and the Western media outlets unanimously kept silent, turning a blind eye against one of the most heartrending instances of the vi0lation of human rights before the eyes of a judge and his colleagues.

When it was needed to sabotage the reality, the Western media showed off perfectly: the Freedom Flotilla was brutally attacked by the commandos of Israel Defense Forces and 9 of its passengers were massacred viciously; the massacre was justified as an act of self defense. Nobody asked the Western media that how it would be possible to justify the killing of defenseless civilians as an act of self defense while they even lacked a knife to defend their lives against the rifles of the Israeli commandos. When it was needed to downgrade the depth of the truth, the mainstream media scored the best goal: 3,500 guiltless Gazans were massacred in a short period of less than three weeks, and the Western media acted so indifferently that one might have felt as if nothing had really taken place!

Western media have demonstrated their unequivocal and unambiguous animosity with the Muslims. Their antagonism emanates from the hostility of the Western governments with Muslims. But what’s behind this hostility? What drives the Western governments to adopt such inhumane and unfair policies against the Muslims that constitute one forth of the world population and have always lived a peaceful and friendly life with the followers of other religions all around the world? What takes the Western governments, and consequently the Western media to enmity with the Muslims?

The answers can be different. One simple answer might be that the empowerment of Muslims may potentially endanger the interests of the Western world. There are 57 Islamic countries in the world and if these countries turn from impoverished, underprivileged and underdeveloped nations into major superpowers, then who may take care of the Western hegemony? The first example which pops into mind is Turkey; a developing, flourishing and promising Muslim nation that is traversing the path of progress and improvement in all fields of science, technology, culture and economy. They don’t give Turkey accession to EU because they know that the addition of a Muslim nation to the non-Muslim members of European Union may punctuate the commencement of an Islamic upheaval which has already indicated signs of dynamicity in European nations such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Albania.

There can be alternative answers to this question; however, the overall conclusion is that the West doesn’t tolerate the progress and achievement of the Muslim world. A simple instance is the obstacles which it puts on the way of Iran’s nuclear program. Although the European and American politicians and statesmen have undisputedly admitted that Israel is the sole possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, they have never made any effort to investigate Israel’s nuclear arsenal which contains up to 200 atomic warheads; however, they have lethally put an ever-increasing pressure on Iran to relinquish its nuclear rights and put an end to its nuclear program which the International Atomic Energy Agency has affirmed as peaceful and unthreatening.

In line with their antagonistic policies with regards to the Islamic world, the Western governments push their affiliated media to portray a lopsided and biased image of Islam and propagate this fallacious belief that Muslims are dangerous creatures which pose a serious danger to the peace and security of the Europeans and Americans.

They intentionally introduce Muslims as terrorists and try to institutionalize the belief that Muslims are always inclined to carry out extreme actions such as killing the other people or persecuting the followers of other religions and forcing them to convert to Islam. They misuse some pillars and principals of Islam to portray their desired image of this religion and its followers and hence spread fear and awe among the Europeans and Americans.

The Western media outlets never show the real image of Islam to their audiences and tell them that the essence of this religion is based on mutual respect, benevolence, peace, love and human dignity. They never allude to the fact that the Prophet of Islam Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was one of the pioneers of human rights in his time and emphasized on preserving and respecting the human dignity immensely. They never reveal the verses of Holy Quran in which it is declared that killing one person is tantamount to killing all of the persons in the view of Islam. They never tell their audiences that in the view of Prophet Muhammad, it was even unlawful to kill a sparrow for the sake of entertainment.

Unfortunately, the public opinion in the West is unaware of the realities of Islam and Muslims. It’s my responsibility to invite you to take a deeper look into the realities of Islam, and if you want to figure out the realities, it’s your responsibility to research and devote your time to a quest of truth.
