Some atheists might claim that science has discovered that God is a myth and that, therefore, believing in God is absurd. The fact of the matter, however, is that science just cannot do that sort of thing (but neither can it conclusively prove God), as this engaging book by  the late Amir Aczel (d. 2015), one-time visiting scholar at Harvard University, research fellow in the history of science at Boston University and teacher of Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts, highlights. Aczel not only offers a convincing rebuttal of atheist claims regarding science allegedly disproving God but also provides scientific insights that seem to clearly indicate that the Universe is inexplicable without God. This book brilliantly shows how science and faith in God can go hand-in-hand.

A major focus of Aczel’s critique is what are called the “New Atheists” (a group of Western authors, including such names as Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens,  who now have a considerable following across the world), who regard religion as a force for evil. Whether they are scientists or not, the “New Atheists” frequently employ science as their tool. However, the science they invoke, Aczel says, is not pure science—the objective pursuit of knowledge about the universe—but, rather, science with a purpose: the purpose of ‘disproving’ God. Hence, their arguments are often tendentious. “They bend and distort science to further their own agendas in a way that is not too different from what a scientist in the pay of a pharmaceutical company might be doing in writing a favorable report about a questionable drug the company makes,” as Aczel succinctly puts it.

Aczel highlights several facts about the Earth and the larger world beyond our little planet that clearly show the hollowness of atheists’ claims, on the one hand, and that, on the other hand, could possibly indicate the existence of the Power or Being that we call God. For instance, he points to the fact that science has not been able to create living beings from inanimate chemical elements. He refers to the amazing fine-tuning of the Universe (which means that it is improbable that it could come into being without a Creator, just by chance, as atheists believe). He contends that the phenomenon of what is called the Big Bang indicates that the Universe had a definite beginning. This fact also suggests that the Universe must have had a Creator while disproving the claim of non-theists who argue that the universe had no beginning and that it was always there. Aczel also refers to human consciousness—one of the most formidable hurdles in the path of atheism. The emergence of consciousness, language, intelligence and symbolic thinking isn’t understood by science, Aczel explains, and no scientist has so far explained satisfactorily this miracle.  “We have no good explanation of how consciousness and symbolic thinking came about. These may well be described as divine gifts”, Aczel writes.

In order to back their claims about science and God, many atheists argue that a majority of prominent scientists are not religious. Aczel regards this as a wrong claim. “This kind of statement is deceptive,” he says. Aczel acknowledges that many “independent-minded people and intellectuals do not like the prescriptions and rituals of organized religion” and that it is “certainly true that religions are tradition-bound institutions that frequently have been antagonistic to change—both social and scientific.” “But that,” Aczel tells us, doesn’t mean that many scientists don’t see in nature and beyond it “a force that is unknown to us and unknowable”.

In contrast to the “New Atheists”, who see nothing positive in religion, Aczel refers to the important roles that spirituality, religion and faith can play in our lives. “They keep us humble in the face of the great wonders of nature; they help maintain our social values, promoting the care of our weak and poor; and they provide hope and some moral code in our ever more complicated modern world”, he writes. “Science and spirituality are both integral parts of the human search for truth and meaning; they provide us possible paths of comprehending and appreciating the vast cosmos and our place in it.”  (Aczel writes here not from the perspective of any one faith tradition and refers to ‘God’ in the broadest possible sense: the Creator—which is one point on which all theistic religions come together on).

Aczel doesn’t claim that he has convincingly proved the existence of God—but that isn’t his purpose here. What he seeks to show—and this he does impressively—is that science has not proven the non-existence of God. He doesn’t deny that religion as a human institution can have its flaws. “But”, he explains,  “God—a power well outside our ability to comprehend, transcending the creation of the universe we see around us—may well exist, and science has not, and will not, disprove it.”

  • Hats Off is waxing eloquent about "manufactured identity" and "manufactured crowds"! That indeed is the least of the thrusts of this book review. As usual he has to find some angle, real or imagined, that he can use to leave his stink!

  • Relgion is manufacture that is true, but people's ego never want to accept it.

Look at the story of Uthmann how he burned all other qurans  and even for last copy he sent army, which was written during Mouhmmad paigmaber, even though Muslims never agree and manufacture another things.

If you ask Muslims which Wahi told Uthman to burn original copies, this Idots do not have answers.

All relgions are manufactured but Abrhamic relgions even have controlled factor by killing.

This Abrhamic relgion( except Judaism) will bring same to humanit, remember wire Cristian's are hiding under westerners.

  • safety in numbers works out differently depending upon the species we are going to talk about.

there are solitary animals, there are communal/social animals. solitary animals act cooperatively. social animals act individually.

so the existence of one does not necessarily delegitimize the other.

the issue here is not one of spontaneous crowds. the issue is one of manufactured crowds.

that is what is religion. manufactured identity.

  • Any belife system cannot be proven true or false.

But Abrahmic relgion especially Muslims belive Quran is true book and belife system that want to all humans who do not belive Quran.

Muslim always quote Mohmmad saying " To you your relgion and me to mine" but this was when Mohmmad was weak and had not enough followers, once had enough followers whole story changes, this is the case with all relgions and sect, it is like number game.

Looking at this number games it looks like humans had never been evolved from safety in numbers, so this weak relgions always wanted to convert and have more numbers.

  • Science is not concerned with whether God exists or not, hence science and religion should never clash.

  • a total strawman argument.
ateists simply do not believe what the theist claims about god.
the burden of proof of either proving or disproving god lies with the theist - for it is the theist that has actually concocted a stupid story and will murder all other who question his theory.
aczel might be anything, he might be fermat's last nightmare, but he is just another theist. as dumb as they get.
