Identity Politics - A New Threat to Individualism
    Adil Rasheed

However, a new threat to individualism has risen in modern polities from what is being described as ‘identity politics’. In simple terms, identity politics seeks to rally special privileges for the “protection” of a particular race, ethnicity, religion, class or gender on the pretext of correcting a supposed historical wrong against it.

    And the Taj Stands Tall
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

It is true that the Taj was worked upon by Indian labourers, that it is they who built the magnificent structure. It is also possible to look at the monument as an exercise in wasteful expenditure, like Aurangzeb did. But to simply criticise it because Muslims built it is nothing but silly. The Taj is a symbol of love since centuries. The Mughal discourse and subsequent history writing have made this object of love into the common-sense of Indian people. Hindus and Muslims both look up to it as the monument dedicated to love. It is not surprising therefore that there was backlash from within the Hindus which forced Yogi to pick up a broom and run to the service of Taj. That is called the triumph of hegemony and the Hindu Right will be advised to think hard before they renege on the pledge that UP Chief Minister gave while speaking on the Taj.

Islam between Fatwa and Suicide Attack: Jihad of the Moderate Islam against Salafi-Jihadist Groups
    Uran Botobekov

Responsibility for the destruction of Islamist terrorist groups and jihadist ideology lies on the shoulders of the governments of Islamic states. We can say quite literally that current Islamic civilization goes through a critical and crucial point in its history and the fate of this civilization directly depends on its ability to cope with radical ideology of the ISIS, al-Qaeda and other jihadist groups....

The Rawda Mosque Attack in Sinai, Egypt: A Violent Explosion of the Salafist Doctrine That Relates To Tajseem and Tashbeeh (Anthropomorphism) Of Allah
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Tellingly, Egypt is the first Muslim country which has mulled down the entire corpus of extremist Islamist literature in the country’s religious and educational centres. It has literally banned the extremist thoughts from flourishing in the new Egyptian generation’s minds. Hasan al-Banna, Sayyid Qutub, Maulana Maududi and almost all those who expounded upon the political Islamist theologies in their books have been ousted from the universities and schools. In his piece in The Times of India, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi claimed that Egypt has been at the forefront in the counter-terror mission….

    Radical Islamism and Jihad

The word “jihad” means “struggle” or “striving” (in the way of God) or to work for a noble cause with determination; it does not mean “holy war” Unlike its medieval Christian counterpart term, “crusade” (“war for the cross”), however, the term jihad for Muslims has retained its religious and military connotation into modern times. The word jihad has appeared widely in the Western news media following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but the true meaning of this term in the Islamic world is still not well understood by non-Muslims….

Types of Terrorism and Methods to Restrain Them
    Basil Hijazi, New Age Islam

The threat of terrorism is no longer a temporary condition. But rather it has now turned into a ground reality. The reason is that we have failed in restraining this threat. Now the question arises; how to fight this threat as an ideology, behaviour and ground reality? It is not impossible to curb this threat. What we need to do is analyse this phenomenon. In this regard we can also benefit from the so-far researched materials on this cancer. Many individuals and institutions have appeared striving hard for covering and analysing all aspects of this issue....

Deoband’s Fresh Fatwa: Why Do the Islamic Theologians (Muftis) In India Lack the Logical Progression in Their Socio-Religious Thoughts?
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Ironically, there is no dearth of “online fatwa” services and websites today that transmit the Saudi Fatwas to the non-Arab Muslim societies, particularly in the Indian subcontinent, regardless of their local contexts, customs, cultures and national ethos. Such pronouncements can be stumbled upon the online fatwa portals such as IslamQA.info, fatwa-online.com, and AskImam.org and many more. Scores of Indian Maulvis are treading the path of the Saudi-Wahhabi muftis in running the online fatwa factories. This is a daunting challenge that Indian Muslims face in the wake of every fatwa of this nature……

Zihar cannot occasion divorce. Let it be observed that from the words of the husband, “you are to me like the back of my mother, “nothing but Zihar is established, because the term employed expressly signifies Zihar; and if he should intend divorce by it, yet that does not take place, as the law of divorce is broken through in this particular situation [that is to say, Zihar has been made, by the law, a thing distinct and separate from divorce, and subject to a rule peculiarly applicable to itself] and also because it is abrogated [that is, now after the advent of Islam, Zihar is not considered a divorce] and consequently Zihar does not admit of divorce being intended by the words of Zihar…

Islam and Buddhism: Integrating the Thought Resources of Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) and Gautam Buddha in Contemporary Peace Policies
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Just as eternal salvation (Nijat-e-Abadi) in Islam is well-embedded in the “Five Pillars of Faith”, the spiritual enlightenment in Buddhism is summed up in the “Four Noble Truths” Much like the earlier were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) starting from the cave of Hira until his demise in Madina, the latter were delivered by Gautam Buddha to five monks at Isipatana in Banaras....

Similarities in Beliefs and Practices between Hinduism and Islam

But the fact that both Islam and Hinduism are based on divine revelation and in essence both worship the Supreme Being is generally ignored. The foundation of Hinduism is the Vedas comprising of different scriptures revealed to Rishis (prophets) over a long period of time. Islam is also based on the Quran which is a reminder of the messages and commandments revealed to prophet before Muhammad pbuh. The Vedas and the Upanishads sing the glory of the Supreme Being (Nirgun Brahman), the Formless God, the Creator of all. The Mundakya Upanishad VI says:

“He is the lord of all. He is the knower of al. He is the inner Controller. He is the source of everything from Him all beings originate and in the end disappear into Him.”....

The Last Sermon of the Prophet Muhammad

Muslims use the occasion a propitious time to rededicate themselves to the universal human values such as sacredness of life and property, equality, justice, peace, forgiveness, non-violence, women’s rights, the pillars of Islam and more. Upon these lofty principles, the religion of Islam was built. Speaking generally about all the non-Muslims living in a Muslim state, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Anyone who kills a non-Muslim citizen of a Muslim country will not smell the fragrance of the paradise." Revisiting Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses
    Rashid Samnakay, New Age Islam

Salman Rushdie’s almost magical dream like complex web of fiction titled Satanic Verses is not easy to fathom even for an unbiased mind on its first reading. The nuanced references to maliciously crafted Hadith however are obvious to detect and therefore for those to whom the corpus is “holy, Shariff and Sahi” must be a cause for concern, a blasphemy and a hurt. It was perhaps this that caused a supposedly learned Iranian Supreme Spiritual Leader Khomeini to issue a fatwa of death on the author. An edict at that time had influenced a few minds against Salman Rushdie as he being instrumental in causing strife in the larger community of Muslims....

The Beauty and Wisdom of the Sufi Teaching on 'Tawakkul' or Divine Surrender
Prof. Henry Francis B. Espiritu, New Age Islam

The reason why I sometimes wanted to declare my “independence” from God is my feeling that there are many things that are going-on in my life that I cannot understand, and I sometimes feel that if I am the one truly in-charge of my life, then all will be well. However, when I looked back at my past and saw for myself the wrong directions I had taken and the mistaken decisions I had made, and the many heartbreaks and complications that came due to my stupid decisions, I cringed at the idea of my seeking “independence” from God; and right there and then, I sincerely repent of my arrogance and confess with utter humility that God is still the God of Divine Wisdom Who holds my very life in the Palm of His Hands….

The Correct Understanding of the So Called ‘Sword’ Verses of Surah Taubah
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The discussion on the verses of Surah Taubah clearly establish that the above two principles, were never violated by the Prophet in his battles against the enemy, and are fundamental principles of Islam. The peaceful Mushrikin had the choice of retaining their religion and paying Jizya and the others had a choice to migrate and retain their religion.

Those who had fought against the Muslims, in violation of their treaty, were deserving of the death punishment, according to the rules of that society. Even these people were given the opportunity to migrate during the amnesty period, and save themselves. The judgment was not only in accordance with the secular law of that society, but more humane and merciful. Calling these the “sword verses” is therefore a complete misrepresentation of both the intent and the outcomes. The people to whom the key words Mushrikin, Kafirin, La Yalamun and La Yuminun apply, and therefore their meaning, is explained with the help of the verses themselves…..
