    Radical Islamism and Jihad

The Ikhwan al-Najdiyun influenced by the Wahhabi scholars declared the regional taxes too as un-Islamic and strictly opposed the formation of their country's embassies in foreign lands. According to them, there was no religious legitimacy for the flags of foreign countries being hoisted in the embassies in the 'only' Muslim country—Saudi Arabiya. Those among the Wahhabi followers who did not forcibly convert Sunnis, Sufis and Shia into Wahhabism were castigated as the ‘treacherous’. Those who delayed the demolition of the Green Dome (Gumbad-e-Khizra) which is above the sacred grave of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) were also treated as ‘seceders from Wahhabi Islam’….

Muslim Women Can Marry Outside the Faith
    Junaid Jahangir

What is very important, and is stuck out in your conversation, is that you are challenged that your understanding of Islam, and what you’ve come to understand as being standards that you admire as a human being, are not being met by Muslim standards either demonstrated in your family, extended family or community. But what I can encourage you to do is to become more familiar with the Islamic faith and its diverse of opinions – for it is never been a monolithic faith – and come to understand that one has an array of opinions from different schools of Islamic theological thought from which to choose to follow, or utilize Ijtihad (individual thinking) in assessing your particular situation…..

    Maajid Nawaz’s Radical Ambition
    Maajid Nawaz

On one hand, it’s a distillation of his larger rhetorical project, capturing the confused and painful textures of contemporary Muslim experience that can lead to the embrace of Islamism: an initial lack of familiarity with religion; local grievance spun into a narrative of global victimization; a tribal relation to other Muslims beyond racial and ethnic categorization; the illusion of empowerment through threat of violence. ...

Assessing the Value of Buddhism, for Individuals and for the World

We Must Develop Ourselves as a Spiritual Personality: A Person Who Loves All Humankind
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Jesus Christ rightly teaches us that man cannot live by bread alone. It means that material things aren’t enough for man. Man needs spiritual food, too. I am a follower of Muhammad, and at the same time a follower of Jesus, too. The gist of Sufi teaching, according to my study, is Sulh-e Kul or love for all. It is the same teaching that we find in the New Testament....

    The Dogmatic Atheists
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The earliest philosophers were also believers. They believed in an afterlife, an immortal soul and in justice finding perfection in our afterlife. They took the moral principles from religion and the ample empirical evidence that was available from practicing these within religious beliefs, and discovered that these made immense practical sense. The moral principles from religion appeared perfectly logical in hindsight. They therefore used reason, and developed theories of ethics based on reason and pragmatism. We therefore have theories of Utilitarianism, Consequentialism etc in philosophy....

    ISIS in India?
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

The media overreach which happened in this case actually helps no one. Going ballistic over the ‘ISIS in India’ and coming to conclusions even before the investigating agencies have started looking into the profile of alleged terrorists only helps stoke negative fears about a section of Indian population. More so when the same media houses have maintained a studied silence on the alleged links of some members of Madhya Pradesh unit of BJP with the ISI or the recent conviction of some members of the RSS in Ajmer blast case. This hypocrisy only lends credence to the perception that the media is biased and has an agenda which makes the Muslim community nervous.....

Aspects of Islam in Asia – Part One
    Dr. Mohamed Chtatou

For faith, in general, the effect is reverse, the further one moves from the centre, the stronger and purer it gets. Indeed, in Christianity the further one moved from the Vatican, in Rome, the more devout the people are, as is the case in Latin America and in the Philippines. This concept also applies to Islam, and thus the people of Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia are definitely very devout and pious in their Islam day in and day out, as a result.....

    Radical Islamism and Jihad

Jamat-e-Islami, founded by Maulana Abu ala Maududi, had grown out of Deoband madrasa system. Jamat from the very beginning was inspired by Ikhwan ul Muslemin or Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt with the aim of bringing about an Islamic revolution and creating an Islamic state. Initially in undivided India Jamat was opposed to the concept of Pakistan. Later, however, when Jamat came to support Pakistan as the Islamic state for the Indian Muslims, Bengali nationalism was totally unacceptable to them....

Tarek Fatah, Liberal Hypocrisy and the Limits of Muslim Tolerance
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

In absolute terms, the attack on Tarek Fatah must be condemned. There cannot be any context to what was pure and simple an act of heckling, intimidation and violence.  There is simply no excuse for this kind of behaviour. Certainly there are more civil ways to air one’s differences, but then who cares to keep a tab on their own instincts of hatred. I am appalled to hear excuses like Tarek Fatah shouldn’t have been there in the first place, that his mere presence ignited the mob because of his Islamophobic utterances. This is all nonsense...

Deepening Signs of a Civil War in Islam: Massacres of Sufis in Pakistan In The Name Of Pure Islam Reveals a Worsening Global Crisis
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Today the question is: Is this pure Islam or true Islam, as Salafis claim? Not for the first, nor for the last time, to be sure, over hundred devotees of Sufi saint Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sindh have been killed in the name of what Salafi-Wahhabis consider true, pure Islam. Salafi-Wahhabis abhor Sufism because they believe that Sufi practices resemble pre-Islamic polytheistic Hindu traditions. Any Muslim who strays from the path of what Salafis consider true Islam is an apostate and deserves to be killed. The murderer has been brainwashed by ulema of his sect into believing that he can be assured of a place in heaven if he kills apostates and kuffars....

Reflections on Kindness to Humanity in Qur’anic Message – Part 4
    Muhammad Yunus, New Age Islam

Murderous Sectarianism in Islam: Salafi Ulema Should Not Only Condemn the Massacre at Lal Shahbaz Qalandar Shrine but Also the Ideology behind It
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

We also need to expose the hypocrites within Islam. There are people who denounce terrorism in public and teach in their madrasas that early peaceful and pluralistic verses of Quran have been abrogated by the later war-time verses asking us to kill the kafir and mushrik. Of course, war-time verses had come in a certain context which no longer exists and so these instructions can no longer apply to us. The first task before us is to come out of denial, accept that our theology and jurisprudence have been corrupted and then start thinking of changing our mindset, so that we can live as peaceful citizens of this inter-connected twenty-first century world....

Imam Ja'far Sadiq- Imam of Both Shia and Sunni Groups
    Zafarul Islam Khan

I would like to say that the difference that originated among Sunnis and Shias after Imam Jafar al-Sadiq is almost over today. In the ongoing debate over the centuries among the Akhbari Ulema of Islam, the primary viewpoint has quashed it and the position of the Wilayat-e-Faqih has existed which is not much different from the caliph. I think that in principle we have reached where our Imam left us. With some hard-work, far-sightedness and mildness, we can unite again Shias and Sunnis today, provided our Islamic scholars, Ulema and jurists strive to get out of their limited constituencies.....

The Lynching of Pehlu Khan and the New Normal
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

And why just blame the ruling dispensation when cow protection has been high on the agenda of so called secular parties like the Congress. The problem is that we have never confronted the problem with all the might that is required. As I look at the responses to the murder of Pehlu Khan, I fear with trepidation at the silence of the secular parties on the issue. No candle light vigils, not even a silent symbolic protest against such a brutal lynching. I wonder whether the secular response has also reached a new normal....
