Disenchantment amongst the Pakhtuns and the Baloch
    S. Akbar Zaidi

The recent manifestation of disenchantment in the way things are done and run in Pakistan is being articulated through the rising expression of injustice and dismissive treatment, particularly amongst the Baloch and the Pakhtuns. Specific conditions exist in both ethnic and national groupings, and this is being made clear by how their different representatives act out their frustrations with the federation and its dominant constituent. Belonging to very different social formations, the Baloch and the Pakhtuns have conveyed their concerns very differently.....

Now, where does Osama bin Laden figure here? Yes, he does, and in great measure. Boko Haram, like other terror bodies, drew huge inspiration from Osama and was greatly linked to Al Qaeda Arab Peninsula (AQAP). People thought that after Laden was killed, Boko Haram would fade into oblivion. But no, it kept on adding muscle and, defying all government measures, has grown from strength to strength.  Similarly, we see the trend of happenings in Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is consistent and looks never ending....

Seeing God Equally in All Things
    Dr Muhammad Maroof Shah

“The just are so set on justice that if God were not just they would not care a bean for God…To the just man nothing gives more pain or distress than when, counter to justice, he loses his equanimity in all things. How so? If one thing can cheer you and another depress, you are not just: if you are happy at one time you should be happy at all times. If you are happier at one moment than another, that is not just. The true lover of justice is so established in what he loves that it is his very being: nothing can drag him from it, and he cares for nothing else.”....

The Hindu Right Has More in Common With Jinnah than AMU Students Do
    Faizan Mustafa

No one individual has caused as much damage to the Muslim cause in the Indian subcontinent as Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Why is it that a lawyer of his eminence – who had argued even for Bal Gangadhar Tilak – could not understand that India was going to be a democracy rather than Hindu monarchy? Did he, as a lawyer, consider the possibility of the future amendments to the constitution by a majoritarian government? By dividing the Muslim population into two (now three, after Bangladesh), he permanently weakened their position and made them a numeric minority in India. The creation of Bangladesh proved Jinnah wrong within the first 25 years of Pakistan’s establishment....

Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

But the Islamic clergy, while boasting of their Qur’anic epithet of Ahl-e-Zikr, have cunningly preached the gravest misgiving on the Islamic viewpoint of Triple Talaq; that it is one of the fundamentals of the Islamic law enshrined in the Quran. A far more negative role they are playing now is that they are tarnishing the image of Islam and the egalitarian message of Quran by misleading the Muslim women who work with them...

And yet the Prophet himself gave us a very different message. One of the stories about him is that he was daily abused by a woman when he used to preach the message of Islam. The Prophet never rebuked her but actually went to her house and inquired about her health when she fell ill. That message seems to have been lost on his followers. They want to do what the Prophet never taught. Perhaps this generation of Muslims understand Islam much better than the Prophet himself. Allah definitely warns all those who insult the Prophet, but then he goes on to say that He is the only one to judge them. But today, Muslims have themselves become the judge, the jury and the executioner in cases related to blasphemy...

A Revolutionary Enterprise for Rejuvenating Indian Madrasas
    Moin Qazi, New Age Islam

The early Muslims made no distinction between the religious and the secular – this was a concept introduced by the British during colonial rule. Muslim scholars  distinguished between the ‘transmitted’ and ‘rational’ sciences, the former corresponding to Qur’anic commentary, the science of Hadith, and Fiqh, while the latter referred to disciplines such as Arabic grammar, poetry, philosophy, medicine, and the like. Both types of knowledge were valued and taught at the madrasa and were a source of upward mobility, prestige, and employment. Before Mulla Nizam Uddin standardized the curriculum known as the Dars-i-Nizami…

So What Is The Reason Behind The New AIMPLB Affidavit?
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

Now again, what authorities do the Qazis have in contemporary India? How are they to ensure that the marriage contract expressly forbids instant triple Talaq? Given the situation that Muslim women are at the receiving end, what if there is pressure on them not to put this component in the contract. How is the Qazi then supposed to behave and act? The simple fact is that Qazis have no authority today and by invoking the institution of the Qazis, the AIMPLB is telling us that they still live in a time when the institution of Qazi was relevant. And that precisely seems to be the problem. They are living in a time warp and refuse to wake from their slumber and see the light of the day. The world has changed while they slept all this while.....

    What is 'Progressive' Muslim Thought?
    Dr. Adis Duderija

Quran and Sunna were progressive in approaching ethical and legal issues of that time by having a more ethical vision beyond what was considered as status quo and customary (Ma’ruf/ 'Urf) ! Progressive Islam wants to stay true to this vision. Ethical values like justice and fairness do not remain frozen in time. They, as collective human experience testifies, in principle are subject to change as God's creative powers have a direct bearing on our own collective reason and our collective ethico-moral compass.....

Those among the Wahhabi followers who did not forcibly convert Sunnis, Sufis and Shia into Wahhabism were castigated as the ‘treacherous’. Those who delayed the demolition of the Green Dome (Gumbad-e-Khizra) which is above the sacred grave of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) were also treated as ‘seceders from Wahhabi Islam’….

'Make Revolutionary Changes in the Islamic Theology of Consensus to Fight Jihadism': Sultan Shahin Asks Muslim Nations at UNHRC in Geneva
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Sixteen years after 9/11, the issue of Jihadi terrorism has become even more complex and widespread.

First, though Jihadism is a violent offshoot of Wahhabism and Salafism, the international community has allowed the fountainhead of Wahhabi/Salafi ideology to continue to spend tens of billions of dollars to Wahhabise the world Muslim community.

Second, we recently saw with horror, but without any protest from the international community, the sight of a UN-designated terrorist, with a ten-million-dollar bounty on his head, launch a political party and nominate another US-designated terrorist to contest democratic elections in Pakistan. Apparently, some countries can ignore UN directives with impunity.

Third, the Muslim community has failed to grasp that Jihadism spread so rapidly around the world because at its core it is not very different from the theology of consensus that informs the religious beliefs and practices of all Muslim sects. That is why Jihadis are not impressed when we Muslims either proclaim that Islam is a religion of peace and pluralism or when we try to wash our hands off Jihadism by claiming that it has nothing to do with Islam. If we Muslims want to live as honourable citizens in the 21st century’s globalised world, we must rethink our consensus theology in all its dimensions and make revolutionary changes to bring it in line with the needs of present times....
