Role of Women during the Era of Reform against the Backdrop of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and His Contemporaries’ - Part One
    Tahir Kamran

Sifting through the annals of history, one may also ask: how was the role of women re-assessed during the era of reform against the backdrop of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and his contemporaries’ bid to make social adjustment in the newly emergent dispensation? The discourse of political decline extended to the social realm. The family as a primary social unit was reconfigured during this period. Deputy Nazir Ahmed, Ashraf Ali Thanwi and even Abul Kalam Azad had a few prescriptions to offer, mostly lamenting the declining scale of morality among women....

Ghulam Ghaus Siddiqi, New Age Islam

It should be remembered that Allah Almighty has called Himself ‘Lord of the worlds’, while for the holy Prophet (peace be upon him), He has used ‘Mercy for all worlds’. This tells us that he whose Lord is Allah Almighty, the Prophet is mercy for him. Thus, his mercy is absolute, complete, and in its entirety. It includes everything and it is for everything.….

Islam and the Principles of Democracy: As a Religion Islam Has the Idea of a Social Contract Woven Into Its Doctrine
    Nuraan Davids

This isn’t hard to do. Islam and the principles and practices of democracy are not mutually exclusive. As a religion Islam has the idea of a social contract woven into its doctrine. It’s a notion that appears in the Qur’an and was also practised by the prophet Muhammad. It’s also present in the social, political, religious, and cultural affairs of Muslims. And so, viewed through an Islamic lens, social contracts between individuals and the nation-state are a manifestation of democratic citizenship....

The country’s transition since the ouster of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011 offers a reminder that democracy can not only survive but thrive—but only if Islamist parties are incorporated into the process. Triple Talaq Row: Social Boycott as Punishment Is Juvenile; AIMPLB Scholars Must Follow Quran and Accept Inevitability of Change
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

The root of the problem for the ulema lies in the stagnation in Islamic theological thought for over a millennium. Orthodox Islam had called for creative rethinking of issues as and when new situations emerged. This was called ijtihad. It was practised by jurists like Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Shafei, Imam Malik, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, etc. The gates of ijtihad, however, were closed after that. It was said that fresh thinking is no longer required. No one had the authority to close the gates of ijtihad, but ulema accepted that. This is what has caused the biggest problem. Indian ulema are perhaps the most conservative of all today. They would not even accept what their counterparts in Pakistan and Bangladesh have....

The Interrelationship between Shariat, Tariqat and Haqiqat
Ghulam Ghaus Siddiqi, New Age Islam

The interrelationship of Shariat, Tariqat and Haqiqat can be well understood in the following way. Shariat is the law for living made by Allah Almighty and guided by the Sunnah of the prophet peace be upon him. Tariqat is the path to realization also guided by the Sunnah; this path discloses the true meaning or interpretation of Shariat and leads to Haqiqat of everything. Haqiqat is the process of realization achieved only by those who walk on the path of Tariqat with holding Shariat tightly and next to this is the Marifat that is the actual realization of Allah Almighty....

As she reaches a marriageable age (4:6), it allows her to choose her own spouse (2:221).It commands a man to give an agreed dower (saduqat) to his bride but permits her to voluntarily remit a part of it (4:4). It obligates a man to pay half the amount of the dower if it was already agreed, or a reasonable dower (if the amount was not agreed) in the event of his refusal to proceed with the marriage (2:236/237). It exhorts him to be considerate and humane in his conjugal relations by adding a spiritual dimension to marital sexuality (2:223) and dismisses any notion of marital rape by its general prohibition of not taxing anyone beyond his/ her capacity (2:233, 65:7). It entrusts man with care, support and maintenance of his wife (4:34), permits a woman in wedlock to have an independent income and to share it with others (4:32).It abolishes the custom of a man’s abandoning his wife by simply taking an oath without releasing her (2:226).It lays down clear protocol of arbitration to reconcile estranged relations in wedlock (4:35) and sets out a three month time-frame or waiting period for a divorce (2:228/229) to become irrevocable….

So Who Is Politicizing Triple Talaq?
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

There is no dearth of educated Muslims who have researched and worked extensively on women issues within the community. They are progressives and a majority of them want the practice of triple Talaq to be removed. Yet, we do not see them representing the community on the television screens. Instead what we have are stale mullahs known for their antediluvian views which will put any community to shame. I do not believe that they are called because producers cannot find moderate progressive voices within the community. I believe that it is a well thought out strategy paint the Muslim community as backward by representing them through the mullahs....

These spiritual, social and intellectual dignitaries have richly contributed to the global peace activism, human rights protection and scientific temperament. Here Is Why Donald Trump Has No Idea about Islamist Terrorism
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

In the run up to the presidency, Donald Trump, embraced a rhetoric about Muslims which put even his far right friends in Europe to shame. Calling Muslims as enemies, he told the Americans that ‘they hate us’ that ‘they’ want to overrun America and all this because there was some fundamental flaw in their religion. For some time, it looked as if Islam and Muslims became the other of America. This polarizing campaign helped him garner votes from even non republicans who were fed on a daily diet of Islamic takeover of Christian America.  The man who advocated a complete ban on Muslims entering America, today has done a complete u-turn and is now telling Muslims to dispel extremist teachings from within their societies. His speech in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia is ridden with confusion and only tells us about his ignorance of the problem that the world is confronting today in the name of Islamic terrorism.…

Supreme Court's Question Is Relevant: How Come A Pre-Islamic Arabian Custom Is Fundamental To Islam In India?
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

But the Islamic clergy, while boasting of their Qur’anic epithet of Ahl-e-Zikr, have cunningly preached the gravest misgiving on the Islamic viewpoint of Triple Talaq; that it is one of the fundamentals of the Islamic law enshrined in the Quran. A far more negative role they are playing now is that they are tarnishing the image of Islam and the egalitarian message of Quran by misleading the Muslim women who work with them...

And yet the Prophet himself gave us a very different message. One of the stories about him is that he was daily abused by a woman when he used to preach the message of Islam. The Prophet never rebuked her but actually went to her house and inquired about her health when she fell ill. That message seems to have been lost on his followers. They want to do what the Prophet never taught. Perhaps this generation of Muslims understand Islam much better than the Prophet himself. Allah definitely warns all those who insult the Prophet, but then he goes on to say that He is the only one to judge them. But today, Muslims have themselves become the judge, the jury and the executioner in cases related to blasphemy...

    Moin Qazi, New Age Islam

The early Muslims made no distinction between the religious and the secular – this was a concept introduced by the British during colonial rule. Muslim scholars  distinguished between the ‘transmitted’ and ‘rational’ sciences, the former corresponding to Qur’anic commentary, the science of Hadith, and Fiqh, while the latter referred to disciplines such as Arabic grammar, poetry, philosophy, medicine, and the like. Both types of knowledge were valued and taught at the madrasa and were a source of upward mobility, prestige, and employment. Before Mulla Nizam Uddin standardized the curriculum known as the Dars-i-Nizami…

So What Is The Reason Behind The New AIMPLB Affidavit?
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

Now again, what authorities do the Qazis have in contemporary India? How are they to ensure that the marriage contract expressly forbids instant triple Talaq? Given the situation that Muslim women are at the receiving end, what if there is pressure on them not to put this component in the contract. How is the Qazi then supposed to behave and act? The simple fact is that Qazis have no authority today and by invoking the institution of the Qazis, the AIMPLB is telling us that they still live in a time when the institution of Qazi was relevant. And that precisely seems to be the problem. They are living in a time warp and refuse to wake from their slumber and see the light of the day. The world has changed while they slept all this while.....

'Make Revolutionary Changes in the Islamic Theology of Consensus to Fight Jihadism': Sultan Shahin Asks Muslim Nations at UNHRC in Geneva
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Sixteen years after 9/11, the issue of Jihadi terrorism has become even more complex and widespread.

First, though Jihadism is a violent offshoot of Wahhabism and Salafism, the international community has allowed the fountainhead of Wahhabi/Salafi ideology to continue to spend tens of billions of dollars to Wahhabise the world Muslim community.

Second, we recently saw with horror, but without any protest from the international community, the sight of a UN-designated terrorist, with a ten-million-dollar bounty on his head, launch a political party and nominate another US-designated terrorist to contest democratic elections in Pakistan. Apparently, some countries can ignore UN directives with impunity.

Third, the Muslim community has failed to grasp that Jihadism spread so rapidly around the world because at its core it is not very different from the theology of consensus that informs the religious beliefs and practices of all Muslim sects. That is why Jihadis are not impressed when we Muslims either proclaim that Islam is a religion of peace and pluralism or when we try to wash our hands off Jihadism by claiming that it has nothing to do with Islam. If we Muslims want to live as honourable citizens in the 21st century’s globalised world, we must rethink our consensus theology in all its dimensions and make revolutionary changes to bring it in line with the needs of present times....
