Marriage and Divorce among Muslims in Britain

A clear majority of the British Muslim couples who settle down together today opt for a religious ceremony, known as a Nikah, but choose not to complement it with a civil ceremony. This can place a Muslim woman in the worst of all worlds in the event of a marital breakdown. Her marriage has no obvious standing in law, so there is nothing to dissolve and no chance to claim joint assets. In Islamic law, meanwhile, the unilateral dissolution of a religious marriage is a male prerogative....

In order to carry out the command of the holy Prophet (peace be upon him), Hazrat Ali was asked to record the peace-treaty which began with “Bismilla Hir Rahman Nir Rahim” meaning “In the name of Allah the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious”. Triple Talaq, Nikah Halala, and Polygamy: Muslims Allow Themselves to Become the Victims of False Prophets

Governments have a history of capitulating to religious lobbies in their quest for vote banks. This includes every shade of government. In my personal recall, the use of gender as bait began with Shah Bano in 1986. Cut to 2014 and the NDA sweep with its avowed anti-Muslim agenda. The best weapon to kill Muslims other than by lynching and torture was to show them as gross violators of women’s rights. Since 2014, words like Triple Talaq, Nikah Halala, and Polygamy etc. have been bandied around with scant understanding of their meaning....

Islam: A Religion of Peace or Violence? The Evidence in Quran - Part 1

Quran allowed its followers to wage defensive war only in the case of protecting the weak and downtrodden people without exceeding limits and this does not make Islam a religion of violence. Its luminaries included women like Ummal-Darda, a seventh-century jurist and scholar who taught jurisprudence in the mosques of Damascus and Jerusalem. Her students were men, women, and even the caliph. Another woman in Akram’s research discoveries: the fourteenth- century Syrian scholar Fatimah al- Bataihiyyah, who taught both men and women in the Prophet’s mosque in Medina, drawing students from as far away as Fez....

The Unprecedented Loneliness of Indian Muslims
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

Muslims are in an unprecedented situation today. There is so much Muslim talk these days but then there is no Muslim voice. Muslims are either spoken about or spoken over. The only Muslims who get a chance to speak are the sponsored ones: made for TV mullahs. They speak on an agenda which is pre-configured to otherwise and demonise Muslims. If this cacophony of silence needs to be broken, it must be done by Muslims themselves. There is no need to wait for others to speak up. True this loneliness is killing, but silence around the issue will only allow this loneliness to rip apart our very souls....

    Islam and the West

Although the history of the Dargah continues to draw me to Ajmer, there is something else that brought me there the first time and called me back a second time. You may call it faith or devotion, or perhaps a sacred longing, a desire to be close to the Khwaja himself, a beautiful reflection of holiness revered by Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains as well as by Christians. It is a place where sanctity is sought and celebrated over sectarianism, where religious distinctions and differences vanish. It is a place where the words of Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-1273) resonate:

What can I do my friends, if I do not know? I am neither Christian nor Jew, not Muslim nor Hindu. What can I do? What can I do? … One I seek, One I know, One I see, One I call…

Lost Legacy of Female Scholars of Islam
    Moin Qazi, New Age Islam

The reforms that took place in the early years of Islam were clearly progressive, changing with the needs of society; however, the more detailed rules that were laid out by the classical jurists only allowed many pre-Islamic customs to continue. These rules reflected the needs, customs and expectations of the society in which they lived, not the progressive reforms that were started during the time of Muhammad. Hence, the trajectory of reform which began at the time of Muhammad was halted in the medieval period through the further elaboration of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), which was then selectively codified in the 19th and 20th centuries....

Why are Muslim Leaders and Clerics So Afraid of Feminism and Critical of the West?
Mushtaq Ul Haq Ahmad Sikander, New Age Islam

The deep-rooted prejudices against West and Feminism have been embedded over the last century deeply in the Muslim mind and it will certainly take decades to de-condition the same. But this point needs to be emphasized that not everything Western civilisation and the ideals of Feminism uphold need be accepted in toto. West and Feminism are dynamic and static concepts. They are not the same today as our older generation of Islamic revivalists understood them during colonization....

If Islam Means Peace, Why Is Much Of Its Theology Soaked In Hatred, Humiliation, Offensive War?
    Sultan Shahin, New Age Islam

Among many factors, social, economic, political, psychological, the one common feature is a brainwashing of vulnerable people on the basis of a supremacist, xenophobic, intolerant, exclusivist and totalitarian Jihadi theology. This is a blatant misuse of Islam, a spiritual path to salvation, that 1.6 billion Muslims believe, teaches peace, pluralism, co-existence and good neighbourliness.

But there has to be a reason why jihadi ideology has gained acceptance so quickly; why fatwas issued by reputed moderate scholars prove so ineffective? How are Jihadis able to create a 100 percent certainty in the minds of some Muslims that violence against innocent people, including Muslims, whom they consider infidel, will please God and lead them to heaven?

Clearly we Muslims need to rethink some basic features of our theology. Success of jihadism lies in the fact that, at its core, the jihadi theology is not very different from the consensus theology of all other schools of Islamic thought. For instance, jihadists are able to misuse the intolerant, xenophobic, war-time verses of the holy Quran, as Muslims believe that all verses, regardless of the context, are of universal applicability. Indeed, the Islamic theology of consensus, taught in all madrasas, says that Quran is uncreated, meaning that it is just an aspect of God; and so, divine like God Himself.....

In these times the movement of Daesh (“ISIS”) has become a great challenge and grave danger to the countries of the Middle East, in particular Saudi Arabia. Their danger is not restricted just to the Arab world, but extends to all countries and peoples. This movement is only concerned with the destruction of historical monuments and of the Islamic landscape, as is witnessed in the lands of Iraq and Syria. They have transgressed in this matter and treat Muslims as non-believing hostile combatants, as though they are enemies-at-war and their lands hostile territories….”

Triple Talaq Controversy: Male Chauvinist Indian Ulema Are Subverting Islam to Mislead the Supreme Court
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

... Now Islam is a religion being practiced only by some Indian Mullahs, so it would seem. This even amounts to declaring Shias as well as Sunni Wahhabi sects like Ahl-e-Hadith apostate because they consider triple talaq in one session as equal to only one reversible talaq.

Even stranger is the fact that AIMPLB consists of Ulema from Shia, Ahl-e-Hadith and other Salafi-Wahhabi sects as well.  Why are they not protesting at being virtually called apostate groups which have “re-written Quran and forced Muslims to commit sin, altering the very essence of the religion of Islam” by a group of which they are members?

The most astounding fact in the AIMPLB affidavit is the justification it seeks for instant triple talaq from the Holy Quran. This has never been done before. Everyone knows there is no justification for instant triple talaq in the holy Quran. All protagonists of the triple talaq in one sitting have so far only quoted Ahadith (so-called sayings of the Prophet, many of them clearly weak and inauthentic, collected hundreds of years after the demise of the Prophet) and juristic rulings of companions of the prophet, or later jurists and theologians.....

    The Language of the Quran
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The word Islam and Muslim have a broad meaning in the Quran and these words do not mean that Islam is only the religion of the followers of Muhammad or that Muslim only means those who accept Muhammad as the Messenger of God. Verse 22:78 “It is Allah Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (Revelation)”. The followers of all previous prophets are also Muslim which is why the verse 2:112 cited above, covers a broad spectrum of people.   However, the common understanding among both the followers of Muhammad and others, is that only the religion brought by Muhammad is Islam and only his followers are Muslim. This common understanding is exploited by the bigots to claim that only the religion taught by Muhammad is Islam and only this religion is the true religion and accepted by God and all others will be the losers.....

    Radical Islamism and Jihad
'Make Revolutionary Changes in the Islamic Theology of Consensus to Fight Jihadism': Sultan Shahin Asks Muslim Nations at UNHRC in Geneva
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Sixteen years after 9/11, the issue of Jihadi terrorism has become even more complex and widespread.

First, though Jihadism is a violent offshoot of Wahhabism and Salafism, the international community has allowed the fountainhead of Wahhabi/Salafi ideology to continue to spend tens of billions of dollars to Wahhabise the world Muslim community.

Second, we recently saw with horror, but without any protest from the international community, the sight of a UN-designated terrorist, with a ten-million-dollar bounty on his head, launch a political party and nominate another US-designated terrorist to contest democratic elections in Pakistan. Apparently, some countries can ignore UN directives with impunity.

Third, the Muslim community has failed to grasp that Jihadism spread so rapidly around the world because at its core it is not very different from the theology of consensus that informs the religious beliefs and practices of all Muslim sects. That is why Jihadis are not impressed when we Muslims either proclaim that Islam is a religion of peace and pluralism or when we try to wash our hands off Jihadism by claiming that it has nothing to do with Islam. If we Muslims want to live as honourable citizens in the 21st century’s globalised world, we must rethink our consensus theology in all its dimensions and make revolutionary changes to bring it in line with the needs of present times....
