No One Can Triumph Over Death
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

Louis was so desperate to recover his health that he ordered that the word ‘death’ never be uttered in his presence! He paid his personal physician an enormous salary of 10,000 gold crowns a month, something that in those times in Europe even a military officer would never earn after 40 years of service. Louis was willing to give away his entire treasury to anyone who could prolong his life by a single day….

    Rana Safvi

After a four month long siege, Delhi fell to the British on September 14, 1857 and Baqar (1790-1857) was the first journalist to have fallen to the imperialistic designs of the British on September 16, 1857. He was a religious scholar who was well versed in Persian, Arabic, Urdu and English. He had received religious education from his father Maulana Muhammed Akbar (who was an eminent Alim) and secular education in Delhi College, which he joined in 1825. Later he became a Persian language teacher at Delhi College....

Ramazan Wave of Terror: Islamic Scholars Must Join Ideological War Against Islamist Ideologues
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

What used to be Happy Eid has come this year blood-spattered. … Muslims believe any good deed done in this period is doubly rewarded. Apparently the terrorists consider their acts “good deeds” that will take them to heaven, with the Prophet himself and a horde of houris waiting to welcome them….

The problem is the theology of consensus among ulrma of nearly all schools of thought. What is called Wahhabi-Salafi theology propounded by Ibn-e-Taimiya and Mohammad Ibn-e-Abdul Wahhab is not very different from the theology propounded by revered Indian theologians like Sheikh Sirhindi and Shah Waliullah, etc. It is this entire theology, a theology of political domination, that will have to be rethought. Islam requires a new theology, a theology of spiritualism, peace and pluralism.

This requires vast, seminal effort. Except for a few progressive scholars, hardly any classical scholars seem willing to engage in this endeavour at the moment. They are willing to give anti-ISIS fatwas and say that Islam is a religion of peace, based on some initial Meccan verses of Quran. But they are not willing to engage with militant ideologues who say that Meccan verses advocating patience, perseverance, peace, co-existence, pluralism and respect for other religions have been abrogated and replaced by Medinan verses of war, xenophobia, intolerance of other religions. Maybe the present global wave of terror will induce Muslim governments and ulema to think that they have no option but to join the war within Islam.

    Radical Islamism and Jihad

It is, of course, unlikely that al-Qaeda will voluntarily follow the example of the Islamist Group and Zawahiri's own organisation, al-Jihad, and revise its violent strategy. But it is clear radical Islam is confronting a rebellion within its ranks, one to which Zawahiri and the leaders of al-Qaeda are poorly equipped to respond. Radical Islam began as a spiritual call to the Muslim world to unify and strengthen itself through holy warfare....

“When we madrasa graduates enter the practical, mundane world we feel that our share in the new global village can only be on the margins. Here, the rules of the game are different and we have not learned them at our religious seminaries. In the job market our qualifications do not carry any weight. We are completely at a loss. Where can we go and what can we do? Probably, we cannot do much except begging. But that too is no easy task especially for those who carry big dreams of changing the world as God’s female soldiers and yet lacking even basic skills of bhikshus to beg for sustenance. Why the madrasa did not offer us a course in begging if it did not equip us with courses relevant for the job market? .... Ijtihad, Rethinking Islam

The respected one hundred thousand Ulama & Mashayekh, Imams and Muftis of Bangladesh were asked the following questions:

    1.         Does Islam, as a great religion of peace, support terrorism and extremist activities?

    2.         Did our prophets, especially our beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pubh), preach Islam by applying this type of brutal and ferocious method?

    3.         Is Jihad and terrorism the same thing in Islam?

    4.         Is terrorism a path to Heaven or Hell?

    5.         Can suicidal deaths be termed as a death of a martyr?

    6.         Is genocide legal in Islam?

    7.         Does Islam support killing children, women and old people?

    8.         Isn’t killing people while they are praying a crime?

    9.         Is attacking churches, temples, pagodas etc. legal in Islam?

    10.       Is it or is it not our duty to form social resistance against terrorists and extremists in the eyes of Islam?

Global Terrorism Stems From Takfirism: How Ulema Can Curb It By Just Issuing Fatwas Of Kufr Against The Terrorists?
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

To begin with it, Indian ulema will have to evolve a robust and progressive interpretation of the Islamic scriptures and a well-reasoned and rational understanding of the Islamic doctrines such as jihad, hakimiyah (God’s rule over the earth), khilafah (Islamic caliphate) and ishtishhad (seeking martyrdom) and al-wala wal-bara (love and hatred for the sake of God). These are some of the theological terminologies and references from the Quran and hadith that the violent Jihadists misconstrue to justify their atrocities. Indian Muftis need to articulate a complete and coherent Islam-based refutation of the takfirist theology itself, rather than resorting to the takfirism against the terrorists. Only then they can help to rescue the new-age gullible Muslim youths from the creeping ...

The Heretic: The Fascinating Story of How Al-Qaeda's Mastermind Dr Fadl Turned His Back on Terror - Part One
    Lawrence Wright

The roots of this ideological war within al-Qaeda go back 40 years, to 1968, when two precocious teenagers met at Cairo University's medical school. Zawahiri, a student there, was then 17, but he was already involved in clandestine Islamist activity. ... Now his (Zawahiri's) former emir (Dr. Fadl) refused to see him. 'I do not know anyone in the history of Islam prior to Ayman al-Zawahiri who engaged in such lying, cheating, forgery and betrayal of trust by transgressing against someone else's book,' the inflamed author told al-Hayat . Zawahiri and Fadl have not spoken since, but their war of words was only beginning.

Why Muslim Ulema Should Confront Zakir Naik? How Does He Encourage Islamist Terrorism?
Sultan Shahin, Founder Editor, New Age Islam

Our focus should not be so much on Zakir Naik as on the question: why and how has he so easily succeeded in radicalising millions. Only a few of these millions may go on to join terrorism, but radicalisation of the millions is the real problem. … In my view the reason he has succeeded is that he is not saying anything new, or vastly different from what other clerics say. He is using the theology of consensus, the same theology that is taught in universities and madrasas. … That is why ulema cannot oppose him in a meaningful way. …

You cannot say in the same breath that instructions in all verses of Quran and narrations of Hadees are applicable to us Muslims even today in the 21st century and that those who are following these 7th century war-time contextual instructions in Quran and Hadees to fight and kill the combatants as well as civilians are wrong. If ulema indeed want to save the community from further radicalisation, they just have to introspect on their own hypocrisy and help evolve a new and coherent theology of peace and pluralism based on the foundational, universal verses of Quran. We will have to come out and say clearly and repeatedly that contextual verses meant for war in the seventh century are no longer applicable to us today. They have merely historical value and tell us the story of what nearly insurmountable difficulties our prophet (pbuh) had to face to safeguard the nascent religion of Islam then. Islam is no longer an infant today. It ahs grown up and found space in 1.6 billion hearts. It can very well take care of itself. Muslims n longer need to fight and kill and put terror in the hearts of so-called kuffar and mushrikeen for Islam to survive as was the case in the 7th century (C.E).

The Social Sexual Global Currency Crisis and the Banning of the Burkini
    Inas Younis, New Age Islam

Man begins to realize that he needs, wants and desires woman, not as an either/or, not as a punctuation mark to the full sentence of his existence, but as the author of his entire life story. He must actually move past the calculations of a static reality and learn to recalibrate according to the fluid world of feminine needs and spiritual impulses. Woman seems to be the only one who holds the key to this ambiguous space outside of the playing field....
