    Balochistan: The Chinese Chequered
    Tushar Ranjan Mohanty

The complex, multilayered, seemingly never-ending security crisis in Balochistan appears more dangerous with the entry of Daesh onto the scene. Balochistan has been under attack by separatists, insurgents, and Islamist terrorists for over a decade and the situation can only worsen with Daesh's entry. The Government, however, continues to deny Daesh's existence in the Province and, most recently, on June 13, 2017...

While the section of the media which supported major Gogoi was doing so for obvious ideological reasons having thrown to the wind the cautious journalistic ideal of speaking truth to power, those who were mildly critical of major Gogoi’s action were the more interesting of the two. Islam and Spiritualism

The human being is more than just flesh and blood. The human being is a spiritual entity as well. These areas comprise the human consciousness. The mannerism of the human being is a culmination of these three things....

Conquering Minds: The ISIS Is a Manifestation of the Intellectual Bankruptcy of the Muslim Ruling Elites
    Muhammad Amir Rana

The ISIS is a manifestation of the intellectual bankruptcy of the Muslim ruling elites. The real challenge thus is not the expansion of the group in physical spaces, but the mindset of the ruling elites and their partners, ie the clergy, which is scared of new ideas. They don’t realise that their traditionalism and orthodoxy are eroding their own foundations....

From Mansur Hallaj to Sarmad Shaheed to Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, Much of Our History Witnessed Sufis’ Bloodshed: The Reason?
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

The recently attacked Sufi shrine in Pakistan, Dargah Lal Shahbaz Qalandar is equally venerated and visited by Pakistan’s Sufi-oriented Muslim majority and the Hindu minority. Inevitably, not only Muslim devotees, but even a considerable number of non-Muslims were killed in the suicide blast. Regrettably, it is quite ironic to see the Prophetic ideals being brazenly violated by the puritanical Islamists in Pakistan, given the state was created in the name of Nizam-e-Mustafa (the Prophetic system of governance)with its constitution loudly being claimed to follow the model of Misaq-e-Madina….

Man’s Story: In Possessing Freewill Man Is An Exceptional Being
Maulana Wahiduddin Khan for New Age Islam

God created humans as eternal beings. Human life consists of two parts: firstly, the pre-death period; and secondly, the post-death period. The first extends over a very short period of time, while the latter will continue for eternity.  Other than man, all beings in this world function completely according to the law of nature. They compulsorily do what the law of nature has destined for them. But man’s case is different. In possessing freewill man is an exceptional being....

Triple Talaq: Muslim Law Board Should Take Cues from Divorce Rules in 22 'Islamic Nations', Not Delay Reforms
    Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi

Clearly, the procedure laid down in the laws of these Muslim-majority countries seems to be in harmony with the well-known Quranic procedure of Talaq, which was also enshrined and exhorted by the Prophet. As far as Iran and its strict Shariah laws are concerned, since it is the Shiite-majority country in the Muslim world, triple Talaq doesn’t have a validity whatsoever.....

Sectarianism: A Profound Ideological Crisis In The Indian Muslim Community
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

The founding editor of New Age Islam, Mr. Sultan Shahin has asked a pertinent question in his recent article:“Sectarian unity is certainly an admirable goal. The intention behind it, however, is also very important. Wahhabi-Deobandi and Sufi-Barelvi sects, who call each other kafir (infidel), are seeking to unite for some months now.  But towards what end?”

Instead of a stage-show of the Barelwi-Deobandi truce, it was high time both Muslim sects’ clergy sincerely reflected on the prevailing sectarian psyche plagued with extremist thoughts. An objective observation reveals that not only the Deobandi-Wahhabi clergy but a section of the present-day Barelwi ulema have also fanned the fire of religious extremism among the country’s gullible Muslims.....

Deoband- Bareilly Unity: Cosmetic and Dangerous
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

As long as this Muslim-Kafir binary informs the consensus theology of ulema, it will be difficult for Muslims to live amicably with others. Temporary sectarian unity which could threaten permanent communal harmony is not the way forward. As Muslims, we need to not only bridge our internal divides, but also stop thinking in terms of Kafir and Momin. We cannot survive as Muslims in the 21st century multicultural world with our antiquated notions of supremacy and separatism....

Why Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan and Indonesia Must be Repealed
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

Analysts say that it is understandable that these things are happening in Pakistan. After all the country was made in the name of Islam; so it is a natural outcome that Islam will pay an important role in the public sphere. But then similar things are happening in Indonesia, a country whose tolerance and democracy was touted as the role model for Muslim countries the world over. The world’s most populous Muslim country with mid boggling diversity in terms of ethnicity, religions and languages is today falling prey to the same rhetoric making Islam the only standard against which all other religious and secular traditions must be judged and evaluated.....

    Mythology of Mother-Goddess among Muslims
    Rashid Samnakay, New Age Islam

All the while the children of the unfortunate mother-goddess suffer the humiliation in silence along with their father. The noble institution of marriage that was the cause of raising the woman to the status of goddess, under whose feet lies the Jannah, that same institution is now used by their religion to grind her personality in dirt, and not only of the unfortunate mother but the honour of the whole family – the father, the children and all those associated with the sordid event. A nation that enacts and obeys such inhuman religious laws is not fit to be included in the community of human beings. So is there any hope for recovery for such a degenerate nation? May be 4-150,151 of the Book can answer that.....

Triple Talaq, Indian Constitution and Counter-Affidavit Filed by Muslim Personal Law Board
    A Rahman, New Age Islam

The most important of these three cases is the petition filed on the subject of triple Talaq, Nikah Halala and polygamy. The title of this petition is Shayara Bano v. Union of India. Under Articles of Indian constitution 14, 15, 21, and 25, this petition has challenged the constitutionality of the three issues; triple Talaq at one go (giving Talaq three times on one occasion by pronouncing Talaq, Talaq, Talaq), Nikah Halala (which involves a female divorcee marrying someone else, consummating the marriage and then getting a divorce in order to make it allowable to remarry her previous husband) and polygamy...

Nikah Mut’ah and Nikah Misyar Are Temporary Marriages That Only Benefit The Muslim Man: They Should Be Seen As Nothing But Prostitution
Dr. Deeba Abedi, New Age Islam

Some cultural and religious practices just keep going on and on for centuries without ever being questioned. No one asks what good they are or who truly benefits from them or why they are still in place after 1,300 years. Nikah Mut’ah and Nikah Misyar, for instance, are some of those customs that perhaps seemed relevant in the seventh century, but today, to many Muslims, they are outdated and geared only for the benefit of Muslim men, with little or no advantages for the women…

Malala’s Calling The Muslim Terrorist ‘You Are Not A Muslim Anymore’ Is Reminiscent Of The Tale Of The Naked King, And A Shaming Challenge To The Violent Extremists Of Islam And Their Tacit Allies

Finally, when the King was marching in his New Clothes it was a little ‘Malala’ in the crowd to shout, ‘the King has no clothes.’ On April 13 in the Parliament of Canada the real Malala of this era – not afraid of anyone, said aloud what the Ulema and scholars of Islam have been afraid to say: “when you pick up a gun in the name of Islam and kill innocent people, you are not a Muslim anymore.”….

The Prophet Muhammad as Mercy Personified
Ghulam Ghaus Siddiqi, New Age Islam

Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to be their model to emulate. The Prophet’s model behaviour included model justice and forgiveness, which is demonstrated in the fact that he never took revenge on anyone on his own behalf but forgave even his staunch enemies. Consequently, this ideal attribute of the Prophet softened many hard-hearted men, playing a pivotal role in attracting the pagans towards willingly embracing Islam and Muslims....

Why Muslims Need Their Own Media House
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

Muslims are also reported in the mainstream media through their ‘peculiarities’, particularly in terms of their religion. Thus stories on triple Talaq, polygamy and such issues gain wide prominence within the mainstream media. A bit of research would tell us that polygamy is more among Hindu castes than Muslims, but when there is a discourse of relating a community to the practice of its religion, and then all facts and figures are given a go by. The problem is compounded by the well-entrenched belief among the media establishment that Muslims are best represented by the Ulema. And thus we have in television studios Muslim religious clerics who through their ignorance and trying to reduce everything to religion, end up giving a bad name to Muslims.....

Challenging Male Authority In Muslim Contexts: What Can We Learn From The Recent Report By Musawah?

Addressing the UNHRC at Geneva Sultan Shahin Questions Contemporary Applicability of Contextual Verses of Quran Meant For 7th Century Wars and the Divinity of Hadith and Sharia
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Fifteen years after 9/11, the scourge of violent Islamist extremism has become even more complex and deadly. The alacrity with which 30,000 Muslims from around the world joined the so-called Islamic State’s war against humanity has puzzled many. How could a peaceful, pluralistic religion be subverted so easily to create inhuman monsters? Among many factors, social, economic, political, psychological, the one common factor is a brainwashing of vulnerable people on the basis of a supremacist, xenophobic, intolerant, exclusivist, totalitarian, Jihadi theology.

This is a blatant misuse of Islam, a spiritual path to salvation that teaches peace, pluralism, co-existence and good neighbourliness. But there has to be a reason why Jihadi ideology has gained acceptance; why fatwas issued by reputed moderate scholars are proving so ineffective? How are Jihadis able to create a 100 percent certainty in the minds of some Muslims that violence against innocent people, whom they consider infidel, will please God and lead them to Heaven?

Clearly we Muslims need to rethink some basic features of our theology. Success of Jihadism lies in the fact that, at its core, the Jihadi theology is not very different from the consensus theology of all other schools of Islamic thought. Jihadists misuse the war-time verses of the holy Quran, as Muslims believe that all verses, regardless of the context, are of universal applicability. But most damaging for Islam and useful for Jihadism is the Doctrine of Abrogation whereby all peaceful Meccan verses are considered abrogated by the confrontational, war-time Medinan verses. Similarly the divinity attached to Hadith and Sharia and their universal applicability will have to be reconsidered by mainstream Islam, and not just to defeat Jihadism, but also to deal with many other issues including Human Rights of women, children and homosexuals....
