What Role Do Muslims Have In Building A Secular UK?
    Tehmina Kazi

Secularism in the UK can only thrive on the basis of specific pacts that different communities make with each other. Non-religious groups and individuals must accept the fact that some people view their faith as the most important part of their identities, even if this may seem perplexing. The onus is also on religious groups and individuals to forge common ground on contentious issues such as women's rights, LGBT rights, freedom of expression and the establishment of good inter-faith – and, crucially, intra-faith – relations....

    Current Affairs

It is, therefore, with some sadness that I must dissent with his recent piece in The Indian Express on Muslim politics. Mander (‘Sonia, Sadly’) quotes a Dalit leader as telling Muslims who come to political meetings: “By all means, come in large numbers to our rallies. But don’t come with your skullcaps and Burqas.” He is dismayed by this advice, seeing it as a gratuitous attempt to get “Muslims to voluntarily withdraw from politics”. To the contrary, while the words may be harsh and direct, the spirit of the advice was forward-looking....

Deoband’s Fresh Fatwa: Why Do the Islamic Theologians (Muftis) In India Lack the Logical Progression in Their Socio-Religious Thoughts?
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Ironically, there is no dearth of “online fatwa” services and websites today that transmit the Saudi Fatwas to the non-Arab Muslim societies, particularly in the Indian subcontinent, regardless of their local contexts, customs, cultures and national ethos. Such pronouncements can be stumbled upon the online fatwa portals such as IslamQA.info, fatwa-online.com, and AskImam.org and many more. Scores of Indian Maulvis are treading the path of the Saudi-Wahhabi muftis in running the online fatwa factories. This is a daunting challenge that Indian Muslims face in the wake of every fatwa of this nature……

Zihar cannot occasion divorce. Let it be observed that from the words of the husband, “you are to me like the back of my mother, “nothing but Zihar is established, because the term employed expressly signifies Zihar; and if he should intend divorce by it, yet that does not take place, as the law of divorce is broken through in this particular situation [that is to say, Zihar has been made, by the law, a thing distinct and separate from divorce, and subject to a rule peculiarly applicable to itself] and also because it is abrogated [that is, now after the advent of Islam, Zihar is not considered a divorce] and consequently Zihar does not admit of divorce being intended by the words of Zihar…

Similarities in Beliefs and Practices between Hinduism and Islam

But the fact that both Islam and Hinduism are based on divine revelation and in essence both worship the Supreme Being is generally ignored. The foundation of Hinduism is the Vedas comprising of different scriptures revealed to Rishis (prophets) over a long period of time. Islam is also based on the Quran which is a reminder of the messages and commandments revealed to prophet before Muhammad pbuh. The Vedas and the Upanishads sing the glory of the Supreme Being (Nirgun Brahman), the Formless God, the Creator of all. The Mundakya Upanishad VI says:

“He is the lord of all. He is the knower of al. He is the inner Controller. He is the source of everything from Him all beings originate and in the end disappear into Him.”....

Muslims use the occasion a propitious time to rededicate themselves to the universal human values such as sacredness of life and property, equality, justice, peace, forgiveness, non-violence, women’s rights, the pillars of Islam and more. Upon these lofty principles, the religion of Islam was built. The Prophet died after unifying Arabia and his lifelong declared love of learning protected and contributed to classical knowledge and continued the tradition of Persian scholarship during the dark ages of Christendom....

Speaking generally about all the non-Muslims living in a Muslim state, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Anyone who kills a non-Muslim citizen of a Muslim country will not smell the fragrance of the paradise." Revisiting Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses
    Rashid Samnakay, New Age Islam

Salman Rushdie’s almost magical dream like complex web of fiction titled Satanic Verses is not easy to fathom even for an unbiased mind on its first reading. The nuanced references to maliciously crafted Hadith however are obvious to detect and therefore for those to whom the corpus is “holy, Shariff and Sahi” must be a cause for concern, a blasphemy and a hurt. It was perhaps this that caused a supposedly learned Iranian Supreme Spiritual Leader Khomeini to issue a fatwa of death on the author. An edict at that time had influenced a few minds against Salman Rushdie as he being instrumental in causing strife in the larger community of Muslims....

The Beauty and Wisdom of the Sufi Teaching on 'Tawakkul' or Divine Surrender
Prof. Henry Francis B. Espiritu, New Age Islam

The reason why I sometimes wanted to declare my “independence” from God is my feeling that there are many things that are going-on in my life that I cannot understand, and I sometimes feel that if I am the one truly in-charge of my life, then all will be well. However, when I looked back at my past and saw for myself the wrong directions I had taken and the mistaken decisions I had made, and the many heartbreaks and complications that came due to my stupid decisions, I cringed at the idea of my seeking “independence” from God; and right there and then, I sincerely repent of my arrogance and confess with utter humility that God is still the God of Divine Wisdom Who holds my very life in the Palm of His Hands….

The Correct Understanding of the So Called ‘Sword’ Verses of Surah Taubah
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The discussion on the verses of Surah Taubah clearly establish that the above two principles, were never violated by the Prophet in his battles against the enemy, and are fundamental principles of Islam. The peaceful Mushrikin had the choice of retaining their religion and paying Jizya and the others had a choice to migrate and retain their religion.

Those who had fought against the Muslims, in violation of their treaty, were deserving of the death punishment, according to the rules of that society. Even these people were given the opportunity to migrate during the amnesty period, and save themselves. The judgment was not only in accordance with the secular law of that society, but more humane and merciful. Calling these the “sword verses” is therefore a complete misrepresentation of both the intent and the outcomes. The people to whom the key words Mushrikin, Kafirin, La Yalamun and La Yuminun apply, and therefore their meaning, is explained with the help of the verses themselves…..

It will be like stating the obvious to say that Khatam-i-Nabuwwat acquired the centrality among rest of the postulates because of Ahmadi viewpoint which was not consistent with the mainstream Muslim belief. It will be pertinent to see it in juxtaposition to the Ahmadi belief regarding Khatam-i-Nabuwwat....

The basic principles of tolerance and treating others the way we wish to be treated are the foundations of both faiths, repeatedly emphasized in their sacred texts. The Importance of Getting the Story Right on the Divine Plan Allah
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

Javed Ghamidi gives the same reasons for extremism as I do but differently worded. According to Javed Ghamidi, the following are the reasons for extremism the belief that it is the rightful duty of all Muslims to mete out the punishment of death to all the Kafir – polytheists, disbelievers and the apostates.

The belief that no one except the Muslims have a right to rule the world and the Muslims are therefore religiously bound to wage war to bring all non-Muslim countries under their rule. There should be only one government in the entire world and that should be the Islamic caliphate. The modern states are an embodiment of Kufr (disbelief), and therefore can have no place in Islam.....

Islam's Relationship With The Rest Of The Word - The Current Problem Of Extremism In A False Ideology And The Antidote From An Authentic Understanding Of The Truly Humanistic Message Of The Quran
    Naseer Ahmed, New Age Islam

The Muslim of the Quran, is therefore simply anyone who submits to God (by whatever name), and is a doer of good deeds. There are therefore only two kinds of people - those who stand for justice and against oppression are the friends and helpers of God and the oppressors are the enemies of humanity and of God.  The finding of this paper needs to be leveraged to transform young minds to think in terms of objective attributes of people, rather than in terms of the narrow stereo types based on a person’s religious identity. Since our theology says otherwise, we need to work to change it according to the clear message of the Quran brought out in this paper to remove the ideological basis for extremism among the Muslims and to promote greater co-operation with all good people of other faiths….

Child Marriage among Indian Muslims: The Mullahs Have Brought Shame to the Muslim Community, Yet Again
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

Even if we come to the conclusion that Prophet did in fact marry a minor, then a historical and contextual reading of this decision can always be done. What was right during the Prophet’s time is no longer valid. What was Sharia (the path) at the time of the Prophet is no longer the Sharia of the present. Contextualising the actions of the Prophet in its time is perhaps the only way out of the morass which we find ourselves in today. Rather than shying away from the problem, we must first have the courage to recognise it and then throw it open for debate. Pretending that everything is fine with Islam only obfuscates the problem and has already done irreparable harm to the community and the religion....
