In another country naming or renaming a university’s physics centre or department would be considered utterly unremarkable. But here in Pakistan — if the name is that of Abdus Salam (1926-1996, physics Nobel Prize 1979) — instant controversy is guaranteed. That’s because, on the one hand, Salam commands the devotion of his embattled Ahmadi community. On the other hand, mere mention of his name inspires religious fury among sections of the population...

Renewal and reform—in Arabic, Tajdid and Islah—have an ambiguous and contested meaning in the Islamic world. They signify a stripping away of accumulated misreadings and wrong or lapsed practices, as in the Protestant Reformation, and a return to the founding texts of the Quran and the Sunna—guidelines based on the recorded words and deeds of the Prophet. But, beyond that, what is the nature of the reform? The father of one modern revelation story is Sayyid Qutb, the Egyptian religious thinker who, after advocating jihad and the overthrow of secular Arab regimes.....

Tackling the Onslaught of Radical Ideology in Bangladesh: Muslims of Bangladesh Must Reclaim the Spiritual Islam Threatened by the Extremists
Ghualm Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

Freedom of conscience and expression is in jeopardy in Bangladesh. Radical Islamists do not recognise any basic human rights. Two bloggers, Avijit and Washiqur Rahman, have been killed in quick succession for demanding religious freedom and tolerance. It is a tragedy for the country that was established as a secular state and that has been recognised by the UN, as Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics claimed in 2008, as a moderate Muslim country. But this tall claim does not stand to scrutiny.

The killing has reminded us of a similarly brutal violence against a Bangladeshi woman journalist, Nadia Sharmeen, who was mistreated by the country’s largest radical Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. The fanatic goons of this extremist outfit, who loudly claim to be ‘protectors of Islam’ manhandled the lady and beat her up badly merely for being a ‘woman field journalist’ and working outside her home. Actually, the Emir of the Hefazat warned the government with 13-point demands, which included banning the women’s right to work outside. They admonished their followers in their preachy speeches not to educate their girls in schools, colleges, and universities and to confine their early school education up to grade four or five. For, women, in the eyes of the Hefazat leaders, have been created to stay within the four walls of their homes, look after their husbands and their belongings and raise their children. That’s all they are meant for. Clearly, moderate, peaceful, tolerant and pluralistic narrative of Islam is no longer the reality of Bangladesh.

    Books and Documents

Editor's note: This is a brief but fascinating biography of prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaih-e-wassallum) from Qur'anic sources alone. Published in 2009, 'Essential Message Of Islam' By Muhammad Yunus & Ashfaque Ullah Syed is a seminal work about which Distinguished Islamic scholar and Professor of Law, UCLA Law School. Prof. Khaled Abou El Fadl, wrote: " Indeed this book manages to translate the Muslim vision or the way that Islam heals the ailments of humanity in the current age and every age. Readers who wish to learn the theological and moral dogma of Islam will find this book indispensable."

For me, this chapter telling the story of the Prophet from Qur'anic sources alone, without using ahadees and other usual sources with debatable credibility.  Classical biography of the prophet Muhammad (may God’s blessing and peace and be upon him) is largely based on the manuscript of Ibn Ishaq (d. 151 ah/ 768 ce) compiled about 125 years after the prophet’s death and published by Ibn Hisham (d. 218/834) around the close of the second century of Islam. This work is based on the oral accounts that were in circulation during that era and were inevitably embellished by fanciful speculations and gross exaggerations down the generations to project the prophet as a legendary figure. As a result its accuracy as a historical record is questionable.

The Qur'an, however, is preserved verbatim since the prophet’s era down the generations by an unbroken chain of huffaz. As the huffaz in the prophet’s era were the first hand witnesses to what they memorized, the text they preserved over time is as good as eye witness account of the events of the prophet’s era. In other words, the authenticity of Qur'anic records is above debate.

In this chapter, Muhammad Yunus and Ashfaque ullah Syed have attempted to construct a summary account of the prophetic mission by connecting   Qur'anic verses with the major events of the prophetic mission as recorded in the annals of history. Hence their work offers a fist hand account of the key events of the prophetic mission and is free from the conjectures, embellishments and imageries that characterize the classical biography.

A doctrine of taqlid (blind conformity with the works of past scholars) and absence of any textual scrutiny or scientific investigation of ancient works, and the exclusion of the Qur'an from any historical research had delayed any attempt at Qur'an-focused exercise as the present work represents. It should be closely read by all those who want to know the noble character of the prophet, his trials and tribulations and the truly defensive nature of the battles he fought. ---  Editor

'Make Revolutionary Changes in the Islamic Theology of Consensus to Fight Jihadism': Sultan Shahin Asks Muslim Nations at UNHRC in Geneva
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Sixteen years after 9/11, the issue of Jihadi terrorism has become even more complex and widespread.

First, though Jihadism is a violent offshoot of Wahhabism and Salafism, the international community has allowed the fountainhead of Wahhabi/Salafi ideology to continue to spend tens of billions of dollars to Wahhabise the world Muslim community.

Second, we recently saw with horror, but without any protest from the international community, the sight of a UN-designated terrorist, with a ten-million-dollar bounty on his head, launch a political party and nominate another US-designated terrorist to contest democratic elections in Pakistan. Apparently, some countries can ignore UN directives with impunity.

Third, the Muslim community has failed to grasp that Jihadism spread so rapidly around the world because at its core it is not very different from the theology of consensus that informs the religious beliefs and practices of all Muslim sects. That is why Jihadis are not impressed when we Muslims either proclaim that Islam is a religion of peace and pluralism or when we try to wash our hands off Jihadism by claiming that it has nothing to do with Islam. If we Muslims want to live as honourable citizens in the 21st century’s globalised world, we must rethink our consensus theology in all its dimensions and make revolutionary changes to bring it in line with the needs of present times....
