A section of religious leaders (putatively Ulama) jointly with secular Muslim leadership coloured the recent localised riots in the region (Assam, Burma) as part of a global conspiracy to kill all the Muslims. This heightened the emotions of simple devotees attending mosques during the holy month of Ramadan and led to a massive gathering in the Azad Maidan, Mumbai. The Ulama, “for whom provoking religious sentiments is part of their orientation” reportedly made sensational speeches and instigated a large crowd outside the Maidan into violent demonstrations that included ‘torching OB vans, attacking media persons and the police, molesting women constables, snatching arms from the police.’ Thanks to the exercise of extreme restraint and a rare show of understanding verging on compassion, the Police brought the situation under control with far less damage to the demonstrators than could have potentially happened if they went by the book. The Muslim leadership of India ought to be ashamed for failing to pooling any donation for the victims of riots, and instead trying to create a serious law and order situation. The fault lies entirely with the sermon-happy Ulama who have drifted so far away from the Qur’anic message that they cannot differentiate haram from halal. The Qur’an declares:

·        “Do not cause trouble (fasad) on earth after it has been reformed, but pray to Him (God) with fear and longing. Indeed God’s Mercy lies close to the compassionate” (7:56). 

·        “And when it is said to them, ‘Do not cause trouble (fasad) on earth,” they say, “We are only reformers. In fact, they are the troublemakers, but they are not aware.’ (2:11-12).

·        “…. God does not love trouble (fasad)” (2:205).

·        “….God does not love trouble makers (mufsidin)” (28:77).

The Ulama may charge the writer of quoting these verses out of context, as the term fasad is connoted with rebellion and acts of terror. The truth remains, morally terrorizing and traumatizing the Muslim masses, raising their emotions to a fever pitch by fiery speeches and instigating them on a fasting day into a violent demonstration in the heart of a city that was soaked in blood by Islamist terrorists not long ago, and remains susceptible to communal violence can unquestionably by construed as fasad.

The bitter truth is, as community leaders, the fraternity of Ulama (though not all the Ulamas) in India have unwittingly played a very subversive and retrogressive role in recent centuries and continue to do.

The Ulama forbade civil education during the British period leading to the marginalization of Indian Muslims in civil service, academy, professions and all prestigious avenues of employment. They zealously supported the two nation theory in blatant contradiction of the Qur’anic message (49:13) resulting in chaotic division of India with catastrophic consequences and bloody aftermath. Post independence they have been clinging uncompromisingly to the Muslim personal law and Madrassa curriculum despite clear Qur’anic guidelines for reform with changing paradigms of the civilization (5:48). Last but not least, in neighboring Pakistan, the Ulama and their alliances are forming terror and sectarian outfits, feeding radicalization, mounting hate India campaign and pushing the country to the brink of anarchy. This is besides their tacit support to Islamists who are scheming to create a global Muslim empire through unlawful violence and sedition in total contradiction of the Qur’anic pluralistic message. It is time for the Ulama fraternity in India to abandon their instigating and conspiratorial role for they have already done enough damage to the Muslim community and to the greater India that existed before 1947.
