ISIS, Taliban, Al-Qaeda and Other Islamist Terrorists are Kharijites? An Analysis of 40 Major Characteristics of Kharijites

By Ghulam Ghaus Siddiqi, New Age Islam

30 January 2016

Is it fair to describe Members of ISIS, Taliban and their likes as Kharijites or Khawarij? A number of Sunni religious scholars (‘Ulema) have identified these modern terrorists as neo-Kharijites. On the contrary, some argue that Kharijite ideas were particular to a historical period and could not re-emerge among these terrorists. How should a Muslim respond to these contradictory views? Should he or she believe such ‘Ulema’ or be neutral? Such are the questions answered in this article, with reference to 40 significant characteristics of the Kharijites.

Who are the Khawarij?

Before we begin, we must of necessity understand the concept of Khawarij. The Arabic term “Al-Khawarij is plural of kharija i.e. a faction. They are a group of (blameworthy) innovators who are named as such due to their leaving the Din (religion) and rebelling against the best of Muslims.” (Fathul Bari Sharh Sahih Ul Bukhari, vol 12, page 283).

Imam Ibn Nujaym al-Hanafi says, “Khawarij are a group that possesses strength and fanaticism and revolt against Muslims or governments, owing to their (self-styled) interpretation. They hold the view that Muslims or governments are upon falsehood, disbelief or disobedience and thus it is necessary to fight against them. They declare that the blood and wealth of Muslims are lawful for shedding. (Bahr al-Raiq by Ibn Nujaym, vol 2, page 234). This precise definition by Imam Ibn Nujaym fits on Kharijites of all times.

The history of Khawarij dates back to the first century of Islam and has appeared throughout the centuries since. They deviated from mainstream Muslims, adopted extremist tendencies, anathematized many illustrious Companions of the prophet (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam), rebelled majorly against Hazrat Ali (radi Allahuanahu) and were popularly known for killing Muslims under allegations of Takfir (excommunication).

Characteristics of Kharijites currently apply to ISIS, Taliban and Al-Qaeda?

Several characteristics of Khawarij, mentioned in Hadith and prophecies of the prophet Muhammad (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam) speeches of holy companions and scholars, assuredly prove that the modern terrorist organizations such as ISIS, Taliban and Al-Qaeda are Kharijites. Their forty major Characteristics are as follows:

1.       They are mostly young in age

As prophesized by the prophet (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam), "In the last days of this world there will appear some people among you who are young in age, immature and senseless; they will use (in their claim) the best speech of all people (i.e. the Qur'an) and they will abandon Islam as an arrow going through the game. Their belief will not go past their throats (i.e. they will have practically no belief), so wherever you meet them, kill them, for he who kills them shall get a reward on the Day of Resurrection."

This hadith has been narrated in several places of the hadith books. The Arabic words used in hadith to refer to this first characteristic are ‘أحداث الأسنان’ or ‘حدثاء الأسنان’ or ‘حداث الأسنان’; all of them have the same meaning i.e. ‘Young people’ or ‘People with new teeth’ (i.e. young in age).

(Ibid. Book 88, Chapter 6, Hadith 12)

(Ibid. Book 61, Chapter: “The signs of Prophet hood in Islam”, Hadith 118)

(Ibid. The book on Virtues of the Qur'an, Chapter: The sin of the person who recites the Qur'an to show off or to gain some worldly benefit, or to feel proud etc, Hadith 82)

(Sahih Muslim 1066 the Book of Zakat (12), Chapter (48): “Exhortation to kill the Khawarij”, Hadith 199)

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi, the Book On Al-Fitan (33), Chapter (24): What has been Related About The Description Of The Renegades, Hadith 31, Grade: Sahih)

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 42, Chapter 31 “Fighting Against the Khawarij” Hadith 172, Grade: Sahih)

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol. 1, the Book of the Sunnah, Hadith 168. Grade: Sahih)

2.       They are immature/people with foolish thoughts and ideas (سفهاء الأحلام)

We see that the people of ‘ISIS’ and their likes are easily brainwashed by the dreams of so-called ‘heaven’ (i.e. ‘Jannat’) and have foolish thoughts.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 88, Chapter 6, Hadith 12)

(Ibid. Book 61, Chapter: “The signs of Prophethood in Islam”, Hadith 118)

(Ibid. the book on Virtues of the Qur’an, Chapter: the sin of the person who recites the Qur'an to show off or to gain some worldly benefit, or to feel proud etc, Hadith 82)

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol. 1, the Book of the Sunnah, Hadith 168, Grade: Sahih)

3.       They will be the people with tucked-up loincloth / a waist sheet that was tucked up (مشمر الإزار)

(Sahih Muslim: The Book of Zakat 12, Chapter 47: The Khawarij and their attributes Hadith 189)

(Sahih al-Bukhari: The Book of Al-Maghazi 64, Chapter: Sending 'Ali and Khalid to Yemen, Hadith 378)

4.       The people (Kharijites) will emerge from the East

(Sahih al-Bukhari 7562: The Book of Oneness of Allah (Tawheed) 97, Chapter 57: The recitation of the Qur'an by an impious person or a hypocrite, Hadith 187)

In one narration, the prophet Muhammad (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said while pointing his hand towards Iraq: “There will emerge from [Iraq] a people who recite the Qur’an but it will not go beyond their throats, and they will stray from Islam as an arrow strays from the animal [at which it is shot].” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 9, Hadith 68)

5.       They will continue to appear until the last of them comes with Dajjal [Anti-Christ] (لا يزالون يخرجون حتى يخرج آخرهم مع المسيح الدجال)

This prophecy refutes those who think that kharijite ideas were particular to historical period and could not re-emerge in modern days among terrorist groups.

(Sunan an-Nasa'i 4103, The Book of Fighting [The Prohibition of Bloodshed] 37, Chapter: “The One Who Unsheathes His Sword and Starts to Strike the People With it”, Hadith 138, Grade: Hasan)

6.       Their faith will not exceed their throats

(Sahih al-Bukhari, The book on Virtues of the Qur'an, Chapter: The sin of the person who recites the Qur'an to show off or to gain some worldly benefit, or to feel proud etc, Hadith 82)

(Ibid., Book 61, Chapter: “The signs of Prophet hood in Islam”, Hadith 118)

(Ibid. Book 88, Chapter 6, Hadith 12)

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 42, Chapter 31 “Fighting Against the Khawarij” Hadith 172, Grade: Sahih)

(Sunan an-Nasa'i, the Book of Prohibition of bloodshed, Chapter: “The One Who Unsheathes His Sword and Starts to Strike the People With it”, Hadith 137, Grade: Sahih)

7.       They will become so deeply absorbed in the Din (Religion) to the point that they will leave it.

(As- Sunnah of Ibn Abi Aasim (no. 930) from 'Abdullaah bin 'Amr (Radi Allahu Anhu)

As the extremism of Khawarij is widely known, some scholars argue that Khawarij are disbelievers, adducing the prophet’s statement “to the point that they will leave it” as evidence for their standpoint. Other group of scholars keeps silence over the Takfir of Khawarij. However, all of them unanimously agree that the Khawarij have nothing to do with Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah: “orthodox Muslims”.

8.       They are excessive in performing acts of worship

(Mu’jam fi Usami Shuyukh e Abi Bakr Al-Ismaaeli by Abu Bakr Ahmed bin Ibrahim, Hadith 246, Zammul kalamWa Ahlihi, Hadith 58, Ithaaful Maharah, hadith 11567)

9.       Every one among you will consider his prayer and fasting insignificant as compared with their prayer and fasting

The Messenger of Allah (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “Leave him (Dhul Khuwasira, one of BanuTamim), for he has friends (who would outwardly look to be so religious and pious) that everyone among you would consider his prayer insignificant as compared with their prayer, and his fast as compared with their fasts. They would recite the Qur'an but it would not go beyond their collar-bones. They would pass through (the teachings of Islam so hurriedly) just as the arrow passes through the prey”.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 6933, Book 88, Hadith 15)

(Ibid. 6163: The Book of Good Manners (Al-Adab) 78, Chapter 95: Saying “Wailaka.”, Hadith 189)

(Ibid. 3610, Book 61, Hadith 117)

(Sahih Muslim 1064: the Book of Zakat 12, Chapter 47: the Khawarij and their attributes, Hadith 193)

(SUNAN IBN MAJAH, Book 1, Hadith 174. Grade: Sahih)

10.     Their prayer will not pass their collar-bones

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4768, Book 42, Hadith 173, Grade: Sahih)

(Sahih Muslim 1066, Book 12, Hadith 204)

11.     They will recite the Qur'an, the teachings of which will not go past their throats

Meaning: TheKhawarij will recite the Qur’an but they will not understand the teachings of Allah Almighty. This is why it is reported that the Qur’an “will not go past their throats”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 6931, Book 88, Hadith 13)

(Ibid. 6934, Book 88, Hadith 16)

(Ibid. 7562, Book 97, Hadith 187)

(Ibid. 1066, Book 12, Hadith 199)

(Ibid. 1064, Book 12, Hadith 193)

(Ibid. Hadith 177, Grade: Sahih

(Ibid. Hadith 175, Grade: Sahih)

(Ibid. Hadith 179, Grade: Hasan)

(Ibid. Hadith 180, Grade: Sahih)

(Muwatta Imam Malik Book 15, Hadith 482)

12.     They would recite the Qur'an thinking that it supports them, whereas it is evidence against them

(Sahih Muslim 1066, Book 12, Hadith 204)

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4768, Book 42, Hadith 173, Grade: Sahih)

13.     They call to the book of Allah, but they have nothing to do with it

It means they will try to use evidences from the Qur’an but err in understanding it and deriving the best meaning from it.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4765, Book 42, Hadith 170, Grade: Sahih)

14.     They talk (in such a manner) as if their words are the best among the creatures

(Sahih al-Bukhari 5057, Book 66, Hadith 82)

(Sahih Muslim 1066, Book 12, Hadith 199)

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2188, Book 33, Hadith 31, Grade: Sahih)

15.     They will be good in speech and bad in work

It means the Khawarij beautify their speech but commit vile actions such as killing innocent lives and creating division in Muslim community.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4765, Book 42, Hadith 170, Grade: Sahih)

16.     They are worst of the people and animals/creatures

(Sahih Muslim 1067, Book 12, Hadith 206)

(Ibid. 1065, Book 12, Hadith 194)

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 1, Hadith 175, Grade: Sahih)

17.     They disparage their rulers and claim them to be upon misguidance, as 'Abdullaah bin Dhil Khuwaysirah did with the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)

(As Sunnah by Ibn ‘Asim, 2/455, Hadith 967)

(MajmauzZawaid, Al-Haithmi, 6/228)

18.     They will come out at the time of difference among the (Muslim) people.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 6163, Book 78, Hadith 189)

(Ibid. 6933, Book 88, Hadith 15)

(Ibid. 3610, Book 61, Hadith 117)

(Sahih Muslim 1064, Book 12, Hadith 193)

19.     They will kill the Muslims and leave alone the idolaters

This is a fact known to all of us by the situation in Syria, Iraq and other Muslim countries that they fight primarily against Muslims.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3344, Book 60, Hadith 19)

(Ibid. 7432, Book 97, Hadith 59)

(Sahih Muslim 1064, Book 12, Hadith 188)

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4764, Book 42, Hadith 169, Grade: Sahih)

20.     They shed forbidden blood- whether their own by way of suicide or others by attacking them by way of murder (from the speech of Hazrat Ali Radi Allahu Anhu)

(Sahih Muslim 1066, Book 12, Hadith 204)

21.     They lie in wait on the roads for the purpose of attacking the passers- by and spilling their blood without any justification from Allaah (from the speech of Hazrat Aisha RadiAllahuAnha)

(Al- Mustadrak by Al Hakim (2/153) and MajmauzZawaa'id (6/236)

22.     They will believe the Muhkam verses and fight over allegorical verses (Mutashabihat) (يؤمنون بمحكمه ويهلكون عند متشابه) (from the speech of Ibn Abbas RadiAllahuAnhu)

(Jamiul Bayan fi Tafsiril Quran by Tabari, 3:181)

(Fathul Bari by Hajar Al-Asqalani 12/300)

23.     They will speak the truth with their tongues, but it will not go past from their throats

(From the speech of Hazrat Ali RadiAllahuAnhuh, Sahih Muslim, The book of Zakat, Hadith 1066)

24.     They take verses that were revealed concerning the disbelievers and apply them to the believers.

(From the speech of Ibn Umar (RadiAllahuAnhu), Sahih Al-Bukhari, chapter 'Killing the Khawarij and Heretics after establishin the proof against them)

25.     They will go out of the religion (i.e. Islam) as an arrow goes through a game's body

(Sahih al-Bukhari: The Book of Al-Maghazi 64, Chapter: Sending 'Ali and Khalid to Yemen, Hadith 378)  (Sahih Muslim)

26.     Those who kill them (kharijites), shall get a reward on the Day of Resurrection

Those who are fighting against neo-Kharijites including ISIS, Taliban and Al-Qaeda, shall get a reward on the Day of Resurrection.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 61, Chapter: “The signs of Prophethood in Islam”, Hadith 118) (Sahih Muslim)

27.     The best of the Slain are those who were killed by them

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 1, Hadith 181) (Tirmidhi)

28.     The Khawarij are the worst of the slain who are killed under heaven

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 1, Hadith 181) (Tirmidhi)

29.     They (Khawarij) are dogs of the hellfire

(Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 1, Hadith 181) (Tirmidhi)

30.     The Khawarij hold that a Muslim becomes disbeliever due to every sin, saying “they leave the fold of faith and enter into disbelief”. (Sharhul 'Aqeedah al- Tahawiyyah page. 298)

31.     The Khawarij believe that the Muslims who commit major sins will live eternally in the Hellfire.  (Sharhul 'Aqeedah al- Tahawiyyah page. 360)

32.     The Khawarij are the worst people in deriving rulings based on analogy. (Al-Milal wan Nihal 1/116)

33. Some sects of Khawarij consider those who do not accept their views to be disbelievers, and then declare their blood lawful for shedding. They also allow killing women, children and the old who oppose them. (Lawaamiul Anwaar al Bahiyyah (1/86)

34.     One of the characteristics of khawarij is that those Muslims who are following Taqleed are a cause for disbelief and the destruction of Islamic ummah. Thus they oppose Muqallid scholars. (Diraasatun Anil FiraqwaTaareekhil Muslimeen, pg. 146-147)

35.     Some of the Khawrij believe that a person who believes that the consensus (Ijma’) of the scholars is proof in Islamic Sharia is a disbeliever. (Diraasatun Anil FiraqwaTaareekhil Muslimeen, pg. 143)

36.     They prefer illiteracy to education, claiming that the combination between religious sciences and the practical secular sciences is not possible. (Diraasatun Anil FiraqwaTaareekhil Muslimeen, pg. 134)

37.     They use only those verses of the Qur'an that are about Wa'eed (Allaah's warning of punishment) while they avoid using the verses regarding the Wa'ad (Allaah's promise of forgiveness and mercifulness) (Al Khawarij Awwal ul Firaq fi Taarikhil Islam p. 38)

38.     They make rulings in haste. (Al Khawarij Awwalul Firaq fi Taarikhil Islam p. 146)

39.     They outwardly display the attributes of calling towards good and forbidding the evil, using Religious texts, while they dispute with and rebel against the rulers and fight against those Muslims who do not obey them.  (Al Khawarij Awwal ul Firaq fi Taarikhil Islam p. 37)

40.  They incite teenage girls, family members, and wives, mothers and fathers to break away from their relatives and family to join their Kharijism.

Ibn Kathir describes this characteristic of Khawarij:

Translation: “Then they (Khawarij) went slipping away alone to avoid detection so that no one would be able to prevent them from leaving. They went from the midst of their fathers, mothers, uncles and aunts, leaving behind all the kith and kin. Due to their ignorance, little knowledge or understanding, they believed that it would please the Lord of Earth and Heaven, not realising that it was in fact of the greatest crimes, the most destructive sins, monstrosities and wrong doings. They did not realise that this had been made attractive to them by the devil and their own egos hell-bent on wickedness. Some people were able to salvage some of their offspring, relatives, and brethren, and return them back and rebuke them. Then, some of these remained upright while others fled afterwards and joined the Khawarij, and so became losers until the Day of Resurrection.” (Al-Bidaya wan Nihaya, v. 10, p. 581)

Given the characteristics of Kharijites clearly mentioned in several Hadith, speeches of holy companions and religious scholars, as some of which referenced above, it is quite fair to describe the ‘ISIS’ and other Islamist terrorists as Kharijite terrorists. It is also worthy to note here that in several Sahih Hadith, the Prophet (Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has commanded Muslims to fight Kharijites. It is, therefore, incumbent (Wajib) upon Muslim governments and rulers to fight against the ISIS, Taliban, Al-Qaeda and Boko Haram, in order to protect Muslims and non-Muslims and establish peace worldwide. As for Muslim scholars, they ought to perform this fight as a wajib on ideological ground, refuting their Kharijite narratives and characteristics.

  • The only thing we can do with "end-time" wars is to reject the concept completely. There will always be some idiots, e.g. the right wing Republican evangelists in the U.S., who  believe that end-time is just round the corner and hence there is nothing we need to do about climate change! . . .

It is best to describe ISIS as the evil inhuman intolerant and un-Islamic murderers that they are rather than seek analogies that generate controversy and serve no useful purpose.

  • The ISIS mindset begins with takfir. The starting point is takfir of people of other faiths in which all sects of Islam indulge. From this point the next step is takfir of all other sects of Islam except your own.  The third step is considering all kafir as worthy of being killed. Most Muslims have quickly graduated to this  level of Takfir. Read the Munir commission report which covers this aspect exhaustively. No sect is free from it. The fourth step is killing those that they consider  "kafir". It is only a few groups such as the ISIS who have reached this level of takfir but the others are not far behind.

The cure lies in reversing this process where the Muslims stop all Takfir including takfir of people of other faiths. My effort has been in this direction and is based on clear evidence from the Quran. Comment on it Mr Ghaus and lend your support if you really want to fight the ISIS ideology. I remember you supporting Raza Ahmad Khan declaring the Deobandis, Shia, Ahmediyas etc as heretics.

As far as the ISIS is concerned, there is no need to look beyond the Quran to decide what needs to be done as already commented by me in my very first comment which Shahin Sb has endorsed.

  • Janab Ghulam Ghaus Sb:

According to your theological study, some people or groups from Wahabis or Salafees who have taken laws in their hands and committing violent activities are bad innovators, hence they are Kharjites. On the contrary, the Wahabis, Ahl-e-Hadees or Salafees say the mainstream Sunni Barailvee Muslims of the sub-continent are bad innovators who celebrate the Hindu or Christian festivals are bad innovators, hence  the mainstream Sunni Barailvee Muslims are Kharjites. What do you say upon it? Who are correct in your opinion?

  • Dear All,

Having endorsed Ghulam Ghous Sahab's views as tabled in this intensively researched article and commended his 'herculean' exercise, I must elaborate on my comments to support him in this ongoing debate.

Firstly, regardless of the authenticity of the scores of ahadith he quoted, it cannot be denied that the Hadith remains a critical part of Islamic religion, in so much as it preserves the legacy of the Prophet, no less his companions. So when there is matter of community behavior, custom and practice pertaining to early centuries of Islam, we cannot dismiss the testimony of hadith even if we are not sure of their authenticity.

As far as his concluding remarks that purport to outlaw ISIS and other terror outfits operating in the name of Islam, I am in 100% agreement with him. I back this up on the strength of a series of my articles dating from Oct 2013 referenced below, the key corollaries of which are copied below in red ink and speak for themselves:

    1.      Article dated Oct.23, 2013

In consideration of the foregoing historical and Qur’anic analogy, and the concluding remarks of the Refutations of two recently issued comprehensive global fatwas by the al-Qaida and Taliban terror ideologues, it may be a fitting response to declare the al-Qaida, Talibans, al Shabab, Boko haram and others, including lone terrorists who justify killing of innocent men, women and children in terror attacks and suicide bombing as apostates and renegades of Islam and refer to them as Terrorist Apostate of Islam rather than Islamic terrorists,

The truth is, in historical perspective ISIS has far exceeded the early Kharijites in its barbarism, bestiality and killing spree, in committing atrocities against innocent civilians, Muslims and non-Muslims alike and in destroying all kinds of civil amenities. It is also committing crimes that date back to the pre-Islamic jahilliyah – notably mutilation of corpses, and meting out punishment that God threatened humanity with - burning people alive. Since Caliph Umar had outlawed the Kharijites – regarded them as terrorist-apostates who had forfeited their claim to the faith of Islam, the ISIS can be paralleled with them and no Alim or Imam should have any fear in warning the community as proposed above: dying while fighting for ISIS may earn them hell, not heaven.

The Heinous Crimes That ISIS Is Perpetrating Totally Opposed To Islam And Those Killed Fighting For ISIS May Earn Divine Wrath Instead Of Paradise And ‘Hurs’ – An SOS To All Mosque Imams

Their [Muslims’] deep seated frustration and agony at the sufferings of Muslim civilians for the crimes of a handful of terrorist and at the increasingly brutal occupation of Palestine as testified by first hand international witnesses like Gideon Levy and Mads Gilbert has probably made them psychologically impervious to the sufferings and destruction that the terror groups are causing to fellow Muslims and Christians, but let them have no illusion - the terror groups regard all of them except their own creed as infidels and there singular aim is to trigger a religious war that would only consolidate their position as expounded in the article. Hence, there is an urgent need to outlaw and marginalize them as the Kharijites (terrorist-apostates of Islam) – as advocated in the articles referenced above.

    5.      May 2015

The bottom line is Islam never spread by cutting the throats of innocent people and forcibly converting others at gun point and committing acts of brutality, except in some narrow corridors of history as an exception and not a rule [11]. The ISIS and its ideological affiliates are a shame on the face of Islam and “like (the Kharijites),[12] their counterparts of almost a millennium ago, they are bound to be increasingly marginalized, and eventually jettisoned from the world of Islam.”

Countering Violent Terrorism – Muslim Community Leaders Must Warn Youngsters against the Dangers of Radicalization

it is time that Islamic Religious Leadership issues a religious decree calling upon activists and fighters and passive supporters of ISIS, Boko Haram, al-Shibab, Taliban and their affiliates that the terror ideology of their groups as well as their aspiration to form a pan-Islamic state by murder, rape, plunder, and creating anarchy represents the antithesis of Qur’anic message and has run out its course in history. …The only way to achieve this could be launching of massive campaign of a magnitude and weight never undertaken since the birth of ISIS such as issue of a proclamation or decree from the Custodian of the Sacred Mosques calling for an overthrow of its leadership by its own followers. Whether this is going to happen or not in the short/ middle term, time will show. But the greater time it takes, the greater the stakes and the graver the consequences. Muslims will only console themselves with diverse conspiracy theories but their masses will bear the fatal consequences for the inaction of their religious leadership – the Custodian of the Sacred Mosques.

  • "One of the characteristics of khawarij is that those Muslims who are following Taqleed are a cause for disbelief and the destruction of Islamic ummah. Thus they oppose Muqallid scholars. (Diraasatun Anil FiraqwaTaareekhil Muslimeen, pg. 146-147)"

Wahhabis consider that Sufi minded Muslims and Deobandis are following taqleed. So it means wahhabis are closer to kharijites?

    By Zafar - 2/1/2016 6:48:07 AM

  • Those wahhabis who have entered into groups of ISIS referred to as kharijites and are killing innocent lives should be fought by Muslim governments until they stop killing Muslims and non-Muslims.

As for common Muslims, they should not take law in hand. Muslim scholars should fight this war only on ideological ground and teach the common masses the true message of Islam.

By Ghulam Ghaus غلام غوث - 2/1/2016 6:33:43 AM

  • Mr. Naseer Ahmed,

The matter of killing kharijites as mentioned in some hadith is up to Muslim rulers and governments. Because the study of other hadith tells us that the matter of punishment or forgiveness is up to Muslim rulers or governments. Muslims are not allowed to take law in hand. In Islam, the law is not made by just the study of one hadith, but rather it is formed after collecting all the relevant hadith and rulings together by applying the criteria of hadith science and checking Istishna, Explicit, Implicit, Preference between authentic and weak narrations, Contextual, Universal natures, and many more.

Perhaps you did not notice that despite the fact that the command of killing kharijites is mentioned in some hadith, I did not ask all Muslims in my conclusion to take law in hand, because according to the study of other hadith and the law unanimously agreed upon among classical, traditional or even modern scholars, Muslims should not take law in hand to punish criminals for their crimes.

Please read the conclusion of my article:

“Given the characteristics of Kharijites clearly mentioned in several Hadith, speeches of holy companions and religious scholars, as some of which referenced above, it is quite fair to describe the ‘ISIS’ and other Islamist terrorists as Kharijite terrorists. As for Muslim scholars, they ought to perform this fight as a wajib on ideological ground, refuting their Kharijite narratives and characteristics”.

    ……………………………….

As far as ISIS being kharijites aka wahhabis, please ask those people who openly say the ISIS is one of the groups of wahhabis. Mr. Sultan Shahin and a large number of the commentators, columnists including of this newageislam.com say they are wahhabis or influenced by wahhabism. Please also ask them if they do not advocate killing ISIS, Taliban and other terrorist organizations.

They may or might say those wahhabis who have entered the groups of ISIS should be killed by the Muslim rulers or governments in the ongoing war, or if not, they should express their minds or stop calling them wahhabis.

    Mr. Naseer,

Perhaps you do not know your fellow wahhabis have also issued fatwa in which they have described ISIS as kharijite organization. They apparently give the statement that the militants of ISIS are falsely using the narrative of Allama Ibn Taimiya and Abdul Wahhab.

May or may not be they are doing it in order to defend their dignity at a time when approximately the entire world has known the real identity of wahhabism or so-called ‘Salafis’.

More you can read is as follows:

The Members of ISIS call themselves to be the followers of Ibn Abdul Wahhab and Allama Ibn Taimiya.

On the contrary to that, other followers of Ibn Taimiya and Abdul wahhab majorly known among Muslims as wahhabis call the ISIS as kharijites.

Now the question is if militants of ISIS referred to as kharijites or wahhabis or a new kind of wahhabis associated with kharijites, should be killed or not, in order to establish peace in the world. Or Muslims should not advocate killing of ISIS, simply because they are a kind of wahhabis.

    Mr. Naseer,

In my theological study, I have been taught that mutual agreement is more preferable than individual interpretation or idea. This is also a lesson taught in hadith science which you perhaps can never test. Let the people of the world decide, which idea is based on mutual agreement.

  • The spark of kharijism had started in the era of the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, though khawarij majorly rebelled against Hazrat Ali Radi Allahu Anhu.

The word “Khawarij” is mentioned in several books of hadith and various speeches of holy companions. I am quoting it for Mr. Naseer who perhaps has said somewhere in his comment that the word ‘khawarij’ was not mentioned in hadith book or something like that.

It was narrated that Sharik bin Shihab said:

"I used to wish that I could meet a man among the Companions of the Prophet [SAW] and ask him about the Khawarij. Then I met Abu Barzah on the day of 'Id, with a number of his companions. I said to him: 'Did you hear the Messenger of Allah [Sallallahu Alaihi wasallam] mention the Khawarij?' He said: 'Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah [Sallallahu Alaihi wasallam] with my own ears, and saw him with my own eyes. Some wealth was brought to the Messenger of Allah [SAW] and he distributed it to those on his right and on his left, but he did not give anything to those who were behind him. Then a man stood behind him and said: "O Muhammad! You have not been just in your division!" He was a man with black patchy (shaved) hair, wearing two white garments. So Allah's Messenger [Sallallahu Alaihi wasallam] became very angry and said: "By Allah! You will not find a man after me who is more just than me." Then he said: "A people will come at the end of time; as if he is one of them, reciting the Qur'an without it passing beyond their throats. They will go through Islam just as the arrow goes through the target. Their distinction will be shaving. They will not cease to appear until the last of them comes with Al-Masih Ad-Dajjal. So when you meet them, then kill them, they are the worst of created beings."

It should be noted here that kharijites “will continue to appear until the last of them comes with Dajjal [Anti-Christ] (لا يزالون يخرجون حتى يخرج آخرهم مع المسيح الدجال)” (Sunan an-Nasa'i 4103, The Book of Fighting [The Prohibition of Bloodshed] 37, Chapter: “The One Who Unsheathes His Sword and Starts to Strike the People With it”, Hadith 138, Grade: Hasan)

From this hadith, this does not mean that khawarij will appear only in the era of the prophet or the holy companions or in the end of time. It means they will continue to appear until the last of them comes with Dajjal.

  • Mr. Raihan Nezami,

You say, “It means Kharjites are innovators, but we can observe that many of the forty signs are available in other sects as well and as much I know the terrorist groups you mentioned generally talk of early Islam or refer to the age of Khulfa-e-Rashdin age. Some other sets are great innovators and possess many signs of the list.

“My question is: Are other Islamic groups/sect not in the category of Kharjites?”

    ..................

In the quote taken from Fathul Bari, the Sunni commentary book of Sahihul Bukhari, I used a bracketed word “(blameworthy)”, but you missed it.

According to Allama Hajar Asqalani, the kharijites are bad or blameworthy innovators. He does not mean to say that kharijites are good innovators.

I can understand from your comment what you want to mean, but it will be better if you explain it in your own words.

As you know, there are two types of innovators among Muslims; first those who are doing good innovations, secondly those who are doing bad innovations. Allama Hajar Asqalani in his commentary has referred to as bad or blameworthy innovators.

Your question if other sects are not in the category of kharijites, based on the characteristics mentioned in the article. I must reply to you that those sects who have all these forty characteristics can be described as kharijites.

By Ghulam Ghaus غلام غوث - 2/1/2016 5:03:17 AM

  • Mr. Raihan Nezami,

You said to me, “Janab Ghulam Ghous Sb: You have referred a Hadith, "“Al-Khawarij is plural of kharija i.e. a faction. They are a group of (blameworthy) innovators who are named as such due to their leaving the Din (religion) and rebelling against the best of Muslims.” (Fathul Bari Sharh Sahih Ul Bukhari, vol 12, page 283)."...................

First thing to tell you is that this is not a Hadith. This is only introduction of kharijites made by Allama Hajar Asqalani in his book ‘Fathul Bari’ which is Sunni commentary of Sahih Ul Bukhari.

By Ghulam Ghaus غلام غوث - 2/1/2016 4:45:27 AM

  • Mr. Naseer Ahmed,

The ISIS claims they are ‘applying’ Quran, Hadith, Sharia and Islam.

Muslims like me believe that the ISIS is misusing Quran, Hadith and Islam.

The ISIS claims they are not “kharijites”.

Muslims like me and Mr. Muhammad Yunus believe and even have proved that the members of ISIS are kharijties.

    .................

    But Mr. Naseer Ahmed,

You claim that the characteristics of kharijites can be applied by ISIS for those who oppose ISIS.

On this basis you claim that the characteristics mentioned in this article are weak.

While checking how you have measured my article, I found your measurement as tantamount to say that Muslims should stop describing ISIS as kharijites because according to you their characteristics can be applied by ISIS too.

Now please tell me! Based on your analogy, should Muslims stop applying Quran, hadith, and Islam, because the ‘ISIS’ claims they are ‘applying’ Quran, hadith and Islam. Or Maazallah, Should Muslims think “the Quran, hadith and Islam are based on weak arguments”, because according to you, they can be applied by ISIS too.

Muslims like me are making efforts for eliminating terrorism and kharijism, whether by weak arguments or strong arguments, they are commendable. If you think you have strong arguments to eliminate terrorism, why have you not so far succeeded in it? In this case, the world needs you more than me like Muslims.

By Ghulam Ghaus غلام غوث - 2/1/2016 4:35:51 AM

  • Mr. Ghaus, such articles can prevent many possibilities of people from joining ISIS.

Nice work dear! Let the commentators speak of their mind, they have freedom of speech. Some of them may discourage and criticize you and others of them encourage and felicitate you for this work. As for me, you are doing a nice work. And i must also accept that the people of ISIS are Kharijites who were outlawed by the prophet of islam 1400 years ago.

    By Zafar - 2/1/2016 3:55:01 AM

  • Mr Ghaus says:

“'ISIS',is a branch of kharijites, also known as 'wahhabis'”

According to the "hadiths" quoted by him, the Kharjites are the dogs of hellfire and those who kill them (kharijites), shall get a reward on the Day of Resurrection.

So  apparently he advocates killing all the Kharjites aka “Wahhabis”!

Aren’t these hadiths the disease itself? The term kharjite has been conveniently extended by Mr Ghulam Ghaus to include all so called "wahhabis" which perhaps includes all Deobandis also.

Ideologically speaking, Islamic theology stinks no matter which sect a person may belong to. They are all the same. There is no cure for this diseases unless the fabrications attributed to the Prophet (pbuh) and labeled as the ahadith are categorized as highly unreliable and doubtful apocrypha.

    By Naseer Ahmed - 2/1/2016 3:48:10 AM

  • Mr. Sultan Shahin,

Could you please give me any quote where the so-called ‘Islamic State’ has clearly claimed to fight the end-time war known as Al-Malhama Al-Kubra?

    ·         We do find some narrations about Al-Malhama Al-Kubra that in Islam refers to the great final battle between the evil forces of Dajjal (anti-Christ) and Muslim army led by the prophet Isa (Jesus) peace be upon him and his assistant Imam Al-Mahdi (peace be upon him). This battle will result into the defeat of Dajjal and victory for Hazrat Isa and Imam Mahdi (peace be upon them).

If ‘ISIS’ has claimed to fight Al-Malhama Al-Kubra,  then where is Hazrat Isa (Jesus) peace be upon  him and his assistant Imam Mahdi peace be upon him? In this case, the same narrations regarding Al-Malhama Al-Kubra refute the forged narrative of ‘ISIS’.

By Ghulam Ghaus غلام غوث - 2/1/2016 2:26:13 AM

  • Mr. Naseer Ahmed,
Is there anything that can not be applied by 'ISIS',a branch of kharijites, also known as 'wahhabis'.
    Where are you, Mr?
Quran, Hadith, Sharia, Islam, all are being 'used' by 'ISIS'.
The analogy you are using is false and does not follow what you say.  Even Mr. Sultan Shahin has not understood this article well.
