"Many are the Qur’anic verses that make clear that all people are free to choose the faith they want. There can be no compulsion with regard to faith. Indeed, over the fourteen centuries since Islam began, compulsion was never a policy of any Islamic government anywhere in the world. On the contrary, followers of other faiths, including those who worship idols, lived freely among Muslim communities. Today, you find Christian and Jewish communities, as well as followers of other faiths, in the overwhelming majority of Muslim countries. This testifies to the fact that Islam operates a policy of freedom of faith and worship. The Hadith you have mentioned is often quoted in support of the death penalty for apostasy. Many scholars mention that this penalty is mandatory, which means that it is prescribed and cannot be changed. However, a fair number of profoundly perceptive scholars are of the view that this punishment is discretionary, which means that it can be reduced or even waived. This is the view that seems to be better supported by Qur’anic and Hadith texts.

It is 'deserting the community', which means that the person concerned did not merely choose to follow a religion other than Islam, but also he deserted his community and stood in opposition to it. Scholars make clear that the Arabic statement implies rebellion. They cite cases of people who changed their faith after adopting Islam during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his two immediate successors, Abu Bakr and Umar, and none of them was executed. A Muslim cleric from UP, who had filed a police complaint against
Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen for allegedly hurting religious
sentiments, is now at the forefront of a campaign demanding that she be
expelled from India for spreading "anti-Muslim feeling."
"We will start a campaign for expulsion of Taslima Nasreen. She
is against our religion and has hurt our clerics," said Hasan Raza Khan
alias Noori Miyan, son of the 'sajjadanasheen' of Bareilly's Aala Hazrat

He said the demand will be raised during the last day of annual
Urs-e-Razwi of Imam Ahmed Raza, commonly known as Aala Hazrat, in
Bareilly on Monday.
Noori was also felicitated by Raza Academy of Mumbai during the
urs on Saturday for taking "the initiative to lodged the case against
Noori had lodged the case with Bareilly Kotwali on December 4
against Taslima for using abusive language against Muftis and hurting
the feelings of Muslims.
"We will collect signatures of nearly two lakh ulemas demanding
expulsion of Taslima. Nearly 20 lakh people come during the urs
celebrations and we will put forward our demand before them," he said.
Noori said Taslima is a foreigner who is "spoiling the atmosphere
of our country by spreading anti Muslim feeling". "I don't see any
point in Taslima being given asylum in our country. She should be
immediately asked to leave," he added.

Moronic rant! People should speak up in whatever way they can. Some may court danger, others may just add a voice to say that we are Muslims and we too are for freedom. When people who do not even reveal their true names call them "do-gooders" who "lip-sync", it is the height of hypocrisy and cowardice.

But instead of saying what you believe, you choose to attack those who do express a progressive opinion. As if staying silent on the subject is a virtue! After all, expressing an opinion is not an exhibition of dare devitry! What you are doing is nothing but an attempt to appear clever without having any tangible point to make whatsoever.
Do we need scriptural supports to accept the simple proposition that man has the freedom to choose a faith as well as to leave a faith?
