Qur’anic Teachings – 7: Who Is A Mushrik (Polytheist)?

By Ziaur Rahman, New Age Islam

16 Feb 2015

According to the Quran, a mushrik (polytheist) is one who sets up partner or partners with God. All the divine religions opposed polytheism and preached the worship of one God who is the sole creator of the Universe and all that is present in it. God says that since he is the creator, destroyer and sustainer of all existence on earth and heavens, only He should be worshipped.

In the Quran, God reminds man umpteenth time of his favours, his blessings, his bounties and his love and care for him and asks him to worship Him and be grateful to Him every waking moment. Calling someone else instead of him in times of distress or need and praying before false gods makes him highly resentful and wrathful. He says:

“Who has made the earth your couch, and the heavens your canopy; and sent down rain from the heavens; and brought forth therewith Fruits for your sustenance; then set not up rivals unto Allah when ye know (the truth).”(Al Baqarah: 22)

Generally, those who worship idols assuming them to be the incarnations of the supreme God are called mushriks or polytheists. The people of Makkah were largely idolaters or polytheists and the Kaaba housed 360 idols. There are many examples in the Quran where even the followers of monotheistic religions like Christianity are also called Mushriks or polytheists. Christians are also called mushriks in some verses because they believe in Trinity of God, Jesus and Holy Spirit.

There are a number of verses in which God chastises the followers of Jesus for worshipping Jesus as God and for having belief in Trinity.

“O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His messengers. Say not "Trinity”: desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.”(Al Nisa: 171)

“They have certainly disbelieved who say that Allah is Christ, the son of Mary. Say, "Then who could prevent Allah at all if He had intended to destroy Christ, the son of Mary, or his mother or everyone on the earth?" And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. He creates what He wills, and Allah is over all things competent.”(Al Maidah: 17)

“They do blaspheme who say: "Allah is Christ the son of Mary." But said Christ: "O Children of Israel! worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Whoever joins other gods with Allah,- Allah will forbid him the garden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help.”(Al Maidah: 72)

“They take their priests and their anchorites to be their lords in derogation of Allah, and (they take as their Lord) Christ the son of Mary; yet they were commanded to worship but One Allah: there is no god but He. Praise and glory to Him: (Far is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).”(At Taubah: 31)

“Allah has said: "Take not (for worship) two gods: for He is just One Allah: then fear Me (and Me alone)."(Al Nahl:51)

“They have certainly disbelieved who say, " Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.”(Al Maidah: 73)

The verses quoted above clearly show Gods disapproval of the belief of the majority of the Christians in the lordship of Jesus and in the Trinity. God declares this belief as disbelief (kufr).

Thus kufr and shirk are not separate categories of disbelief. Kufr is the denial of the oneness or the Supreme Authority of God. When someone sets up partners with God, he commits kufr as he denies Him as the supreme Being.

Thus one who commits shirk, commits kufr too. From this point of view, the Quran declares those who worship idols as well as those who believe in Trinity kafirs or disbelievers.

The verses that brand the idolaters as kafirs or unbelievers or disbelievers are as follows:

“Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority: their abode will be the Fire: And evil is the home of the wrong-doers!”(Al-e-Imran: (151)

“Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners with Allah is to devise a sin Most heinous indeed.”(Al Nisa: 48)

“Say "It is Allah that delivereth you from these and all (other) distresses: and yet ye worship false gods!"(Al An’’am: 64)

“Yet they make the Jinns equals with Allah, though Allah did create the Jinns; and they falsely, having no knowledge, attribute to Him sons and daughters. Praise and glory be to Him! (for He is) above what they attribute to Him!”. (Al An’am: 100)

“They call on such deities, besides Allah, as can neither hurt nor profit them: that is straying far indeed (from the Way)!”(Al Haj: 12)

“Being true in faith to Allah, and never assigning partners to Him: if anyone assigns partners to Allah, is as if he had fallen from heaven and been snatched up by birds, or the wind had swooped (like a bird on its prey) and thrown him into a far-distant place.”(Al Haj:31)

“will they then believe in vain things, and be ungrateful for Allah's favours?- And worship others than Allah,- such as have no power of providing them, for sustenance, with anything in heavens or earth, and cannot possibly have such power?”(Al Nahl:72-73)

“Who set up another god beside Allah: Throw him into a severe penalty.”(Qaf:26)

“So call not on any other god with Allah, or thou wilt be among those under the Penalty.”(Ash-Shuaraa: 213)

“And of His signs are the night and day and the sun and moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostate to Allah, who created them, if it should be Him that you worship.” (Fussilat: 37)

“Say: "Do ye see what it is ye invoke besides Allah? Show me what it is they have created on earth, or have they a share in the heavens bring me a book (revealed) before this, or any remnant of knowledge (ye may have), if ye are telling the truth!. And who is more astray than one who invokes besides Allah, such as will not answer him to the Day of Judgment, and who (in fact) are unconscious of their call (to them)?” (Al Ahqaf: 4-5)

“Yet do they worship, besides Allah, things that can neither profit them nor harm them: and the Misbeliever is a helper (of Evil), against his own Lord!”(Al Furqan:55)

“Then shall it be said to them: "Where are the (deities) to which ye gave part-worship”(Al Mumin: 73)

“For ye do worship idols besides Allah, and ye invent falsehood. The things that ye worship besides Allah have no power to give you sustenance: then seek ye sustenance from Allah, serve Him, and be grateful to Him: to Him will be your return.” (Al Ankabut: 17)

The verses quoted above do not specifically address any particular religious community but from their content, it is evident that they are addressed to the idolators of Makkah or of Arab as a whole, and the worshippers of the Sun and the Moon. They have also been called mushriks (polytheists) because they worshipped their deities besides Allah.

From some verses, it becomes evident that some of the idolaters and polytheists of Makkah believed in Allah (the Supreme God) but also believed in the power of their deities. One verse that makes it clear is as follows:

“If indeed thou ask them who has created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon (to his Law), they will certainly reply, "Allah". How are they then deluded away (from the truth)?”(Al Ankabut:61)

Another verse also testifies to this:

“And thus (it is) that We have sent down the Book to thee. So the People of the Book believe therein, as also do some of these (pagan Arabs): and none but Unbelievers reject our signs.” (Al Ankabut: 47)

According to the Quran, attributing God with human attributes and likening him to anything created by God is also kufr. Thus taking Jesus as the son of God or the claim of the Jews that they are the sons of God is also kufr, disbelief. Similarly, the polytheists of Arab would imagine the jinns to be the daughters of God. That was also a form of disbelief or kufr.

Therefore, shirk also falls under the category of kufr as it challenges the oneness or sovereignty of God.

However, God does not resurrect the whole community for the sins of a section of it. Quran says that among the Jews many have gone astray but there are Jews that are on the right path. Similarly, the Quran says that among the Christians, many have gone astray because of their belief in Trinity and other beliefs that are in violation of the teachings of the Bible, there are some Christians who are on the right path: they have belief in one God, the Day of Judgment and all the scriptures revealed by Him. The Quran testifies to their faith in the following verse:

“They are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allah during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer].”(Al-e-Imran: 113-114)

“If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.”(Al-e-Imran: 110)

“And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allah and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allah.(Al-e-Imran: 199)

The verses quoted above do not point to the belief of individuals among the Christian fold but to the non-trinitarianism or anti-trinitarianism that rejected the belief in Trinity. Trinity as a belief only was recognised by the ecumenical council as a Christian doctrine in as late as 4th century. Thus it is a modern innovation in the Deen of Jesus.

Nontrinitarianism came about as a result of efforts of reviving Christianity and purging the Deen of impurities. In other words, nontrinitarianism is part of the efforts of Tajdeed-e-Deen in much the same way as efforts for reviving Islam have been made in every century by Mujaddids or revivers. One such mujaddid of Christianity was Dr John Thomas (1805-1871) who embarked on the path to purge Christianity of the impurities and founded his sect called Christadelphian. He studied Bible minutely and questioned the doctrine of Trinity. Apart from his group, there are other Christian sects, though minority, in England, the US and more than 100 countries of the world who do not believe in Trinity and believe in one God. Apart from Christadelphian, there are other groups that reject Trinity are Christian Scientists, Iglesia ni Cristo, The Church of God International, Living Church of God etc.

Thus when Quran pointed out that there are some upright Christians, it did not mean sundry individuals who believed in one God but upright sects and groups among Christians who rejected the polytheistic belief of Trinity.

In short, the Quran strongly warns people, particularly the people of the holy Scriptures against polytheistic practices like Trinity and declares it shirk (setting up partners with God) and does not distinguish between an idolater or a Christian or a Muslim in terms of shirk. Anyone who invokes false gods, deities or lords is a mushrik irrespective of his proclaimed religious affiliations.

It is the Christians who think that Paul altered Christianity, not Muslims. Regarding the uncreatedness of the Quran, there are certain verses that prove that Quran was revealed according to the circumstances and at least on one occasion, some verses were revealed extempore, during the process of revelation. But since I am not into that debate, I do not want to go into it though it might be a very interesting discussion.

  • Secularlogic

according to the Qur'an, as a believer in uncorrupted Quran, it sole duty of a Muslim to call disbelievers to the message of the Qur'an.

To maulana wahidudin khan saheb, it is only duty of Muslims to call people to only truth of the Quran.
Allah has protected the Quran through the mission of the prophet.
So maulana is a da'yee means one who invites. Of cource he means peaceful conversion.
but it also means that all other faiths are corrupted.

  • One commentator assured me that according to the Quran there is no corruption in the Bible.

the net belief of Muslims is that except the Quran, every other book was corrupted for meager price.

  • Even if other religions, according to Islam, have 'corrupted' their faith, so what?

In the great march of human social evolution, the only thing constant is change. The change can be for 'better' or 'worse' depending on consequences, which can only properly be estimated on hindsight.

Course correction is also built into this evolution. Why do you want to freeze this evolution at some historical date? Entities that do not evolve become extinct.

In any case, so long as no one is asking you to be a part of any other 'corrupt' faith, why do you give yourself sleepless nights over the 'corruptions' of others?

  • Janab Ziaur Rahman saheb.
Thanks for giving answers one by one to my question.
My question on corruption of Bible was because Muslims in general believe in it. You also emphasized it by mentioning a person called Paul. As Muslims found one Jew behind every problem of Muslim, here again one Jew is found to corrupt Christianity.
This story tell a different story. Allah allowed a single person Paul to distort his message? Why Allah is interested in distortion of his word? this story is similar to Abdullah bin saba Muslims invented him as a Jew to save Muslims from their inter personal conflicts.
Of course Allah didn't ask you to do what he wanted to do. But Since Muslims believe in corruption of other holy books, and Muslims also believe that the Quran is proptected. this question is natural? Why Allah didn't protect his early words but protected last word.
If you fail to explain it, that is just fine.
The story of Paul is a possibility. It could have been invented by Christians?
Why Paul as a Jew will create hate for Jews in the Christianity?
Every religion has some villains so that the faults of the religions can be thrown on these villains.

I liked your frank reply at the same time not shocked for having such story to support corruption in Bible.
so the question remains unanswered why Allah protected his only last word? Muslims have some reasons to believe in it like the Quran is uncreated, divine but other books are not.
this belief has its consequences. It gives a sense of supremacy to Muslims over other believers.  there will remain a unbridgeable gap between Muslims and non-Muslims.
all roots of problems can be found in holy books. political ambitions only aggravate the situation.

I am just unable to give answer. it seems to be a part of pre-ordination doctrine of Islam. pre-ordination tried to give answer but entangled the matter more. In this matter the Quran confuses its readers.

  • I think NAI must host a one-to-one debate between Mr Rehman and Mr Observer. Both are saying radically different things about the same topic, and both are, apparently, learned on the issue.

As of now, it is surreal to find Mr Observer absolving the disbelievers while Mr Rehman categorically says that most non-Muslim faiths belong to the category of "disbelief"

    Who is right?

I was not trying to convey anything to the general readers. I only replied the questions put forth to me by my ratioanlmuhammadyunus. My post on distortions in Bible was in reply to his question on distortion or corruption in the Bible. It should be seen in that context only. Please do not separate my answer from his question.

  • To: Ziaur Rehman @ New Age Islam

    As-Salaam Alay-Kum

Surah: Al-Qiyamah (the Day of Resurrection)

    Chapter: 75 – Verses: 16-19

[Prophet], do not move your tongue too fast in your attempt to learn this revelation: We Ourself shall see to its collection and recital. When We have recited it, follow its words attentively; and then, it will be for Us to make its meaning clear.”

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan’s translation is as follows:

“When revelations, wahi, were made to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), he used to make haste to receive them. Here, he has been asked not to do this. It is further stated that he should pay full attention to that part of the Quran which had already been revealed and which had already been addressed to him and should not concern himself with that portion which had not till then been revealed and had not been addressed to him. This shows that the individual should pay the fullest attention only to that portion of the Quran for which he is accountable at that moment. To make a point of seeking out that portion of the Quran for which he has not yet been made accountable, is being over-hasty and is entirely against Quranic wisdom.”

Truthfully speaking, I was baffled to read your lengthy comment. In fact, I have no earthly as to what you were trying to convey to the readers. The question of the day is, “Are Muslims attentively reading and understanding the actual meaning of the Quranic verses?

Tell me. Why are Muslims, like you and many others, so much concerned about the faith of “People of the Book. Do you know what is going on in the Islamic world? If not then, kindly listen up. “Christians are being beheaded. Which Quranic verse, instruct Muslims to behead innocent humans?

Ziaur Rehman Saheb, don’t you think that your commentary should be to focus on the serious issues facing the Muslims rather than to place too much emphasis on the nitty-gritty of who corrupted Torah and Bible? For crying out loud, can you at least be honest to let the readers know as to how Muslims managed to distort the meaning of Quranic verses?

    Have a blessed day.

    Very respectfully yours,

  • Janab Rational Muhammad Yunus sb, let’s take your questions one by one.
!) (Do) You believe current versions of bible are corrupt?
Yes, I believe that the current versions of Bible have distorted portions. The holy Quran does not say anything in this regard, except that it says that they (the ahl-e-kitab, meaning both Jews and Christians) take monetary benefits in lieu of the revelations of God. It may mean that they misinterpreted the scriptures or distorted them in order to achieve material or political gains. Since Quran accords equal respect to all the holy scriptures, saying anything of that kind would have made all the scriptures doubtful in the eyes of Muslims and they would lose respect for them. Since God repeatedly says to the readers of the Quran that all the Holy Scriptures preach the same values and all are respectful, no negative comments have been made in the Quran about them.
    2) In what way? In text, in meaning, or they are concealing the truth?
In Christianity, a term Pauline Christianity is used to denote a certain stream of Christianity founded by a self proclaimed apostle of Christianity shortly named Paul. His background is less known. He was probably a Jew and an enemy of the Christians and is believed to have persecuted many Christians for having belief in Jesus. But probably as a part of a conspiracy to distort the teachings of Christianity because Christianity was spreading and it was not possible to stop its spread ideologically or physically, he overnight became a devout follower of Christianity.(Similar conspiracies were hatched in Islam by the Jews who were called munafiqs and some of them even narrated hadiths that are considered reliable and authentic). In fact he claimed to have a dream in which Jesus instructed him to explain and spread Christianity. Now Paul is considered central to the doctrine of Christianity. But many Christian scholars started questioning and criticizing his authority and accuse him of distorting the teachings of Bible which have made Christians deviate from original teachings of Jesus. You can find a number of articles and posts on Paul and how he distorted Christianity. I am copy pasting some of the excerpts from these articles and posts so that you can have a general idea. You can read the full articles there.
“Perhaps you have heard of the name "Paul”(spelling?). There was a Paul as the disciple of Jesus. But this famous Paul is not that one. He is a person who (some say) did not see Jesus himself except in his dreams. He was against the Christians on those days, and after a revelation in a dream, he became Christian, and he became the father of todays’ Christianity. Nobody asked him those days:
Where have you been my son when Jesus was on the cross?
Why do you claim that you can now expand, explain, and
defend the religion which you fought for a few years?
My point is that: He became the base of Christianity and the source of revelation. Everything, then, came through him. Several rules and theology of Christianity, all came through his sentences which were not in the original religion at the beginning.”
“Paul (or Saul of Tarsus) was a pharisee and a very controversial person.  He belonged to Tarsus in the Eastern Roman Empire (probably Greece).  It is said that he lived during the time of Jesus, possibly born between 3 to 5 B.C. but no one knows his exact date of birth.  Paul persecuted the Jews and Christians for long time and then suspiciously converted to Christianity after reportedly seeing a "dream."  Then, somehow, his name changed from Saul to 'Paul' and he literally became the founder of an altered version of Christianity, the one practiced today by the Christians.   Paul is regarded as the most important interpreter of Jesus' mission.  The gossip goes that he explained in a way that Jesus himself didn't.  Paul claimed that he was commissioned by Jesus to preach Christianity. But Christians today openly acknowledge that other than Paul's own claim that he was commissioned by Jesus, there is no proof at all that he was.  In fact, majority of the Christian sources are of the firm opinion that Paul never even saw or met Jesus.  Yet, every word of his was considered law and he was never questioned nor required to prove his credibility concerning whatever he claimed.  He lay the foundation of altered Christianity.  He began being recognized as the most important source of Christian laws which had nothing to do with the original Faith as preached by Jesus, son of Virgin Mary.  We can well imagine how many Christians have so far deviated from their true roots in preference to the phoney stories and whispers of this man, in the name of faith.”
“Tom O'Golo postulates several key elements were added by Paul to Christian theology that weren't evident in Jesuism. These included:
    1. Original sin
    2. Making Jews the villains
    3. Making Jesus divine
    4. Transubstantiation of bread and wine into actual flesh and blood
    5. Jesus' death being seen as atonement for human sin
    6. Making Jesus the Messiah
    7. Shifting the emphasis from an earthly to a heavenly kingdom
    8. Enlarging the chosen people to include anyone who accepted Jesus as Saviour
    9. Making salvation a matter of belief in Jesus almost regardless of the demands of the Torah
    10. Establishing a hierarchy (literally a holy order) to create and control a Church and more importantly to create and control the beliefs of its membership.”
There must have been similar self proclaimed authority on Christianity who distorted the original teachings of the Bible by making additions or their own interpretations.
    3) Can you identify the corruption in the Bible?
No, I haven’t read the Bible but the distortions in the original faith (Trinity etc.) are for everyone to identify.
    4) Why Allah didn't protect his early words from the corruption?
I cannot say why Allah does one thing and does not do another. He does things according to his own scheme of things and plans without informing or consulting me.
“Absolutely, we have revealed the Zikr, and, absolutely, we will preserve it.” (Quran 15:9)
(The Arabic version of the verse has the word Zikr but the translators write the Quran while translating the verse thus the translations becomes as follows:
“Absolutely, we have revealed the Quran, and, absolutely, we will preserve it.” [Quran 15:9]
It gives the impression that God has promised to protect only the Quran and not all his revelations.
In the Quran Zikr does not mean the Quran only but the revelations of God as a whole (it includes all the scriptures revealed by God)
But another verse contains the word Quran
“[Quran 85:21-22] Indeed, it is a glorious Quran. In a preserved master tablet.”
In Surah Al Qiyamah, verse number 17 and 18, the word Quranahu means recitation of a particular verse being revealed and not the book Quran.
“So when we have rectied it (through Gabriel) then follow its recitation (qur’anahu)”
It is a matter of research as to whether the word Quran here means only the scripture revealed to Prophet Muhammad pbuh or all the scriptures. Why will God preserve only the Quran and not all the revelations made to earlier prophets as well? This is a question occurring to me. So you can answer or may Muhammad Yunus sb say something on it.

Several rules and theology of christianity, all came through his sentences which were not in the original religion at the beginning. How many sentences, you think, caused christians to deviate from their true roots? There is a person named as Abu Hurairah whose history I will bring after a while. This man says himself:
    ۔۔
Paul (or Saul of Tarsus) was a pharisee and a very controversial person. Allah seems to be extremist in punishing disbelivers on the earth or in hereafter.

You said earlier copies of Bible had mention of hz Mohammed? Do you believe current versions of bible are corrupt? In what way? In text, in meaning, or they are concealing the truth? Can you identify the corruption in the Bible?
Why Allah didn't protect his early words from the corruption?
