Is New Age Islam Creating Divisions in Islam?

From Naseem Ahmed

To sultan Shahin Editor@NeweAgeIslam.com

Dear Sultan Shahin,

Anyone who creates divisions in Islam, creates, supports and encourages sects is against the unity and oneness of Islam. It is the greatest disservice to Islam and your website and newsletters are precisely doing the same. Sorry to say this. This is in collusion with the enemies of Islam.

 May Allah enlighten you!

The Holy Quran

(Y. Ali) Are they waiting to see if the angels come to them, or thy Lord (Himself), or certain of the signs of thy Lord! the day that certain of the signs of thy Lord do come, no good will it do to a soul to believe in them then if it believed not before nor earned righteousness through its faith. Say: "Wait ye: we too are waiting." 6:158

Topics discussed in this Verse:

[Allah's signs] [Angels] [Righteousness]

(Y. Ali) As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least: their affair is with Allah. He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did. 6:159

Topics discussed in this Verse:

Those who divide the religion into sects Allah warns them for their [affairs are with Allah.

  • This website is a disguised weapon to divide muslims' belief even further. The editors and columnists are carrying a illuminati mission. Look at their face, you can see "K-F-R" written on their forehead if you are a believer only just like Prophet (PBUH) has predicted.

  • Dear Sultan Shahin Sahib, Having read your rejoinder to Yunus sahib which was perhaps in  respons to my comments on his theory of de-contexting certain ayats or may be the whole text , I think after your posting on this subject this absurd debate will end.

  • Brother Shaheen,
I have been reading yours and others contributions, comments and approaches to the morden interpretations of the Quran. In 2003 I was in the Dominion University of Norfolk USA, where I met some students of different muslim countries. The discussion among us became the islamic terrorism because of the 9-11 attack. The end of the discussion of was nothing but an emotional outburst against Americans and Jews. None of them knew what is Quran and what is the history of Islam, particularly the events which took place during the first  century during the Muslim Khilafat in Arabia and its neighbourhood.

All Islamic Madarsas teach their students that for a muslim Ahadiths are the only true record of the past as well as of the future of this world. In such a situation how one can think that you can change or enlighten the muslim community. Ideas and faith and tenets of religion reside safe and sound in books but men live in hostile situations facing unfortunate circumstances in which references to the books do not help, one has to make decisions with his ability rationalize the pros and cons of his actions. The uneducated and the irrationals usually turn to prayers and recitations of their holy books, that their individual and social problems will be solved with a divine intervention. Do you think you will be able to change this attitude of our people? I do not think so. Whatever you and others are putting on the net all have been said and written almost in every century of our history. We are simply doing excavators' job. The only gain in arguments against arguments will be that the names of participants and the commentators will shine on the website for a short time.

I assure that the condition of the muslim world as it is based only on faith will go from worse to the worst unless the majority of the muslims embrace knowledge based on logic and the facts of human nature. It is a falacy and idiocity to believe that any religion or philosophy can stop  volcanoes  from bursting and keeping their lava and magma cool for our pleasure. However, I pray for your success in your efforts to better the life of muslims in this world

  • Mr. Sultan Shahin,

If you are a Muslim, then Assalamu alaikum,

I am double Post graduate of Science and MBA from Maharashtra. Recently I read about you and your website in a local newspaper. I am ashamed about myself that I visited your website. It’s very sad that to please someone you say that some verses of Quran were meant only for the time of the Prophet and are not meant for today (May Allah forgive me). Are you real Muslim or some anti-Muslim forces are supporting you to misguide others.

You also please non-Muslims by saying that these people will also enter into Allah's Heaven. Here only I came to know your level.

Please shut down your web site and join any madrasa to learn Islam.

And keep Beard on your face if you are Muslim, because it is Practice (Sunnat) of my Prophet Muhammad Swallallahu alaihi wa sallam.

Please Do Not Misguide Real Muslims by your dirty Website.................

  • Comment I used to be a sectarian Muslim (Sunni) :

Response:In fact, those Muslims who stayed away from new sects throughout Islamic history-the followers of the pristine orthopraxy-The Sunnah of The Apostle of God(May God Bless Him and grant Him Peace) like Averroes for example came to be known as People of Sunnah of  The Apostle of God (May God Bless Him and grant Him Peace).

To say that Averroes was a sectarian because he was a Sunni is simplistic. In fact, many new sects in Islam have used the hatred of Sunnah to create new sects. So, I there is a prospect that you end up being part of a new sect saying all people out there popularly known as sects are wrong while there are others who say all are right. The middle way is that there are people out there who obey God in accordance with the Praxis of The Apostle of God (May God Bless Him and grant Him Peace) throughout ages.

  • Yeah!! If a messenger brings bad news, first blame him!!

No. Shahin is daring to print what we like to ignore and sweep under the rug conveniently. He has printed material that presents both sides of the picture. A true Qur'anic spirit by which one has to be fair even if it goes against our own. If I am not told there is egg on my face, how will I proceed to clean it?

Shahin does not have to create divisions. Over the centuries we are pretty good at it, thanks. He cannot be blamed to carry sects as that is up to those who divide religion based on fabrications of history, ahadees and fiqh. Shahin does not have this distinction. He just presents what is in the pot. What is in the pot tastes funny? There is a reason we Muslims are in the ditch for the past several centuries. Allah promises success to the Momins; If we are not successful we must be doing something wrong.

We are sick and tired of taking different kinds of medicines being presented as Islam as it is not curing us. It is about time we sit up and asks our doctors just what are they feeding us with?

Shahin's idea is to wake up the Muslims and draw their attention to their ugly backyards. We can pretend that they don't exist, but in this day and age of the internet, outsiders can easily spot it.

Shahin truly hurts for the state of the Ummah. Please don't question his intentions. Sometimes it takes a few slaps on the face to come out of a stupor. Let him do that and let us acknowledge our shortcomings and explore ways to make amends.

Shahin presents his own views in editorials once in a while. We could appreciate what we agree with and let him know, with arguments, what we don't agree with. Shahin prints both sides of the issue provided we use decent language and not engage into hysterics.

I used to be a sectarian Muslim (Sunni) but when I read what the Qur'an says about sectarianism I gave it up. I live by The Qur'an and the Qur'an only. I read history but don't fall for it hook, line and sinker. History and ahadees (both Shia and Sunni versions) are not God's Word . They are also a source of division.  Therefore; we need to judge early Islamic history and hadees literature in the light of The Criterion (Al Furqan).

Keep up the good work Brother Shahin. We need someone to show us the mirror as we have drifted away from Allah's Word into the enchanting world of history with all its controversies and fabrications. Except tales of our glorious past, we have nothing to show. It is about time we woke up and start being useful members of world community and gain some respect as tolerant and progressive and peaceful citizens.

Sure we have grievances but we need to remember that no injustice done to Muslims any where can ever justify that taking of innocent life.

  • New Age Islam is not trying to break up Islam into sects. Sects already exist. Unfortunately we are more obsessed with what divides us than what unites us. The emphasis should be on what makes us Muslims. The emphasis should be on our belief in one God, our belief in the Quran and the Books that preceded the Quran and our belief in our Prophet, and in the Prophets who preceded our Prophet. What divides us is not nearly as important as what unites us.

New Age Islam is trying to fight intolerance and obscurantism and to promote rationality and communal harmony.

  • Very good comment by Shoaib . I second his thoughts

  • Islam -A common humanity in a divided world.
Islam means to submit before the Creator.
Any person or any thing created, automatically embraces Islam if he believes and submits before the Creator.
A Muslim is a person who submits himself before the Creator.
Any person, belonging to any faith becomes a Muslim if he submits himself before the Creator. A person may be a follower of Moses, Jesus, Mohammad or any Prophet but if he believes in One God then he is automatically a ‘Muslim’. All the Prophets were Muslims.
The divisions/sects that have been created are not because of Allah or His Prophets, they are man-made and they seek to divide the humanity into sects for their own personal gains. Allah warns us against dividing ourselves into sects. Just like Allah is One, so is his creation…one humanity. The differences were so that we may recognize each other, otherwise Allah would have created us alike.

“For each is a direction towards which it faces. So race to good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you forth all together. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.”
There are many ayats in the Quran which clearly indicate that the differences of faith and religion are man made and the only test for a believer is to submit and to do good deeds. When we will be brought before Him, He will not ask us whom- which Prophet we followed but only – why we divided ourselves into sects? and what deeds we performed?

There is only one sect - that is Islam, one faith -that is to bring Iman in One Allah and in all the Prophets, to follow and obey them and in all revelations and only one test and that is –righteous conduct.

Any person who wishes to divide the humanity into sects and try to portray himself as the ‘Achiever’ and the other as ‘Kafir’ is destined to the hell fire, InshaAllah.
I urge the people who are reading this to kindly separate themselves from the Alims, religious scholars, Mullas who are seeking to misguide and divide us. They will surely be questioned for what they have been doing. But please, spread the message of Peace, compassion, unity, tolerance, justice, brotherhood, harmony and a common humanity.

I am a part of One Islam- The Universal Islam. I am a follower of all Prophets including our beloved Prophet Mohammad and I have obeyed him by bringing Iman in the Imams from his Ahl-al-Bayt (the Ulil Amr and the vicegerent of Allah on earth.)

  • On my previous comment, I would also like to add that this fear that others are defaming Islam comes from our own insecurity. Unless we have something that we, deep down, feel is absurd and will be embarrassing if exposed there is no reason for us  to worry about  being defamed.  If someone makes a wrong statement that can be immediately challanged if we have our act together and our faith is based upon sound reasoning and critical thinking.

Laws of nature, or universal laws cannot be defamed.  Would it make any sense that someone says that the theory of gravity is under great threat and we must protect it from or its enemies.

Ifwe have something that we rather sweep under the rug then I can see why we would be so defensive.

How virtues like alturism, truthfulness, integrity that are some of the traits of Islam can  be defamed. These can stand on their owm merrit and don't need any protection from us

  • Apropos of Naseem Ahmad's note

Is New Age Islam Creating Divisions in Islam?

    My comment:

What happens when "those who care" see the Ummah is going astray?

Will their effort to interfere be considered creating divisions in Islam?

Shouldn't we all be having continued dialogue on such issues?

Shouldn't the Muslims be encouraged to participate in such dialogue?
