Refutation of Jihadists’ Understanding of the Hadith, ‘I Was Commanded to Fight the People until They Testify that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’

(This refutation is the translation of an Arabic speech made by Allama Adnan Ibrahim during a TV interview.)

This noble Hadith, which is authentic, has been related by Imam Al-Bukhari, on the authority of Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah Almighty be pleased with them). But to be honest with you, in its Isnad [i.e. chain of narration] there is hidden defects that Hafidh Ibn Hajar Al-‘Asqalani mentioned in his book (Fathul Bari/ Grant of the Creator).

Let us assume for the sake of argument that this Hadith is authentic. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah Almighty be upon him) said: “I have been ordered to fight against the people until they testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and until they establish the Salah and pay the Zakat. And if they do that then they will have gained protection from me for their lives and property, unless [they commit acts that are punishable] in Islam, and their reckoning will be with Allah.”

This Hadith caused and still causes a stir in the East and the West, among the Orientalists and the Muslims living abroad. They say it is a religion of mercy, yet it is a religion of fighting, and it is established itself by the sword, Muhammad himself says I am commanded to fight the people to enter them into Islam, and he who does not then their blood and wealth is permissible for me, far being from him and from the Sharia (Sacred Law). One might say but this is in the Hadith. I say make no haste against me, the Noble Qura’n is very clear in that, it did not permit us to be hostile towards the slaves of Allah, “Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits” (2:190), “And fight the polytheists all together as they fight you all together, but do not initiate transgression” (9:36).

One might say, what about this Hadith? What if it were really an authentic Hadith? Did the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) actually say this? Rest assured, by the grace of Allah Almighty. Let us leave the understanding of all Takfiri groups that unfortunately do exist and say, “The Prophet says I was ordered to fight the people, all the people, in all times and all places”. Let us keep away from all such ignorance. Let us stop making such a false accusation against Islam due to lack of knowledge and understanding.

The Four Imams, Ahmad, Abu Hanifa, al-Shafi’i and Malik (May Allah Almighty be pleased with them) have clearly expressed their opinion in this regard. We do not need to hear others. We do not need to hear any Jihadi groups or anyone except for the four Imams. The Four Imams unanimously agreed that the word “people” (Nas), is general intended for specific people. I will explain this to those who lack the knowledge and understanding in this regard.

When Allah Almighty says, “When people said to them: “the people have gathered against you, so fear them” (3:173). To start with, what is meant by the first ‘people’ cannot be all the people, why? There is contradiction. “When people said to them”, is it all the people on the earth who said? If so then who are they saying it to? To themselves? Thus, it is very clear that in the verse “when people said to them”, those who are saying differ from those who are being told, yet those saying are referred to as people. In actual fact the people here is in reference to Nuaym Ibn Mas’ud al-Thaqafi; only one person. You will find the explanation of this verse in all the books of explanations [Tafsir] where they unanimously mention that what is meant by the first ‘people’ is Nuaym Ibn Mas’ud. What is meant by the word people in the verse “the people have gathered against you”? Are the people of Rome meant by this? No, they are not meant by this. Are the people of China or India meant by this? No, they have nothing to do with it. Then what is meant by the word “people” in the verse “the people have gathered against you” are Abu Sufiyan and the Confederates.

Thus what is meant by the word ‘people’ is some people, even if it were one, or a group of people. We have three different meanings for the word ‘people’. This is what is widely known in the Arabic language as a general term intended to mean specific people. Such as the deluge at the time of Noah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), “And We caused the earth to gush forth with springs” (54:12). Do you actually think it was the whole of the earth? No, this is not true, scientifically; the flood could not have covered all earth. Thus what is meant by the word “earth” is the earth to which Noah was appointed, the land of his people, which Allah wanted to drown with the flood. You know that before the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), all prophets were sent specifically to their people. Far be it from God Almighty, to send Noah specifically to his people and then drown the whole earth. No, he will only drown those who disbelieved in him.

Thus with the grace of Allah Almighty, the four Imams said, the Hadith “I was ordered to fight the people” does not refer to all the people; those who make peace and those who fight. It is either meant the disbelievers of Makka only or the disbelievers of al-Jazira. Sheikh ul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah’s explanation of this Hadith was remarkable, despite being a Salafi scholar not a philosopher. The meaning of this Hadith in the language of Ibn Taymiyyah is as follows: “the people that I must fight (who are they)? They are the people who were hostile towards him, the first to assault him and break the covenant, not all the people”. Is it clear now? The prophet said, (this is the explanation of this Hadith), I was not ordered to fight them without a reason, nor was I ordered to fight them to the extent of annihilation. I was ordered to fight them for two reasons, either they become Muslims, thus I will hold back from fighting them, I am not blood thirsty, otherwise I will continue to fight them till annihilation or till they become Muslims.

  • Any Hadith that advocates fighting in the name of religion must be declared obsolete, irrespective of whether it is "authentic" or not. Jehadi cries of 1400 years ago are not applicable in today's pluralistic world.
