Radical Islamism and Jihad (07 May 2014 NewAgeIslam.Com)

Jihadist Magazine ‘Azaan’ Calls For Western Muslims To Attack Their Own Homelands In Europe And America. Doesn’t This Violate All The Tenets Of Islam? Part II

Propaganda That Destroys

By Ghulam Ghaus, New Age Islam

07 May, 2014

“The biggest contribution you can make to the Jihad is to do an attack in the West,” said Abu Salamah Al-Muhajir in his opinion piece titled ‘To the Jihadis in the West’, one of the articles published by the Talibani Jihadist English magazine ‘Azaan’.

As discussed earlier, the magazine seeks to instill its foul intentions in the impressionable young minds of its readers. It provokes the Western Muslims to attack their homelands and continue doing so until their countries’ foreign policies towards the Islamic world change for the better. The most repeated rhetoric for radicalizing them is that the Western countries (including non-Wahhabi Muslims) are at war with Islam.

The Western Jihadi ideologue, Abu Salamah Al-Muhajir, lays an array of arguments. It quotes the Qur’an and Hadith out of context, justifying the rationale behind calling Muslim youth to set up lone-wolf jihadist battlefields across the world. Motivating the youth with radical interpretations of Islam, it reviews a range of concocted conditions for Muslims to leave their parents, children, wife, homes and even their colleges to launch jihadist activities and attain martyrdom.

This second part of the article will refute the force-fitted rhetoric that Abu Salamah Al-Muhajir uses to fulfill the political ambitions of his Talibani movement. He incites the jihadists to be fearless “to do an attack in the West” and inspires this act of terrorism by the slogan of bravery as he says: “Are you afraid that this path will shorten your life and those distant dreams of yours will remain unfulfilled? Believe me, my brother, bravery does not decrease one’s lifespan and cowardliness does not increase it”.

To force fit with the foul intentions of mass destruction, he quotes the following verse: “And Allah grants respite to none when his appointed time comes and Allah is all-aware of what you do.” [63:11]

Quoting this verse out of context, the Jihadi ideologue is more tantamount to say that the fixed time of death has come to the Western Muslims and they should die at least after doing some amount of help for their petty purpose of life; enslaving non-Wahhabi Sufi Muslims and non-Muslims for their threshold. Surely this is not to be true as long as the moderate mainstream Muslims are alive. They, and even a man of slightest intelligence, can easily perceive the huge juxtaposition between the Qur’anic verse and the opinion of Abu Salamah Al-Muhajir. This will be much better if we comparatively ponder over the verse (63:11), its context, and the injunction that we can derive from.

Abu Salamah Al-Muhajir has done a great injustice to the meaning of the Qur’an itself. He and his like-minded Talibani-Wahhabi ideologues are thus unable to get enlightenment from the Qur’an. This is because taking verses out of context leads to all kind of errors. The best way to check the true context and complete concept of the verse 63:11 is only if we understand its subject matter that starts from the verse 63:9.

•        “O believers! Let not your wealth and your children make you neglectful of the very remembrance of Allah. And whoever does so, it is they who are the losers.” (63:9)

•        “And spend (in the way of Allah) out of (the wealth) which We have given you before death approaches one of you, and he says: O my Lord, why did You not give me respite for a short while so that I could donate in charity and become one of the most pious?” (63:10)

In the first verse, God Almighty wants the believers to remember him. They should be grateful to Him for having children and wealth; otherwise they will be the losers. The second verse enjoins us to spend out of our wealth in the way of Allah, the almighty, i.e. giving charity to the poor, the needy, the helpless, the orphans, and for educating the underprivileged students, etc. It also suggests us to donate in charity before we die. This is relevant context and the verse after which God Almighty says: “And Allah grants respite to none when his appointed time comes and Allah is all-aware of what you do.” [63:11]

From this verse, we know that our time of death is fixed, but no one knows when, where and how except God Almighty. However, this verse does not mean that one should get ready to die by killing innocent lives. Therefore, the idea of the Western Jihadi ideologue, Abu Salamah Al-Muhajir, is against the reality of the Qur’anic verse (63:11).

He says, “Death contains severe pain and none are saved from this except the Shuhadah.” He quotes, “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The martyr feels not the pain of killing except like a pinch.” [Tirmidhi]. Then he says, “If death is written for everyone, why not seek shahadah for yourself?”

Abu Salamah al-Muhajir calls the Western Muslims to die as if he we were well-acquainted with the fixed time of their death. Is he not claiming the unseen knowledge of one’s appointed time of death, while only Allah knows who is to die when? Another point is that Abu Salamah al-Muhajir degrades the value of life both for Muslims and non-Muslims. Muslims are freely allowed to practice their religion in total harmony with non-Muslims; both of them leading prosperous lives together.

But the Western Wahhabi-Talibani ideologue wants there to be destruction in the West and Muslims to die while killing and bombing non-Muslims. Is it not the degradation of Muslim and non-Muslim lives? Is it not representing the political agenda of the Wahhabi-Talibani ideologue? Is he not misusing and mis-contextualizing words like Shahadah, jihad, Sharia, etc? Is he not against following Qur’anic verses and Hadith that ensure the protection of life for all mankind?

God Almighty says:

•        “God commands justice and goodness and giving to fellowmen, and He prohibits (Yanha) the abominable, the evil, and terrorism (Baghya), and instructs you that you may be mindful.” (16:90).

•        “And spend in the cause of God and do not cast yourselves into destruction with your own hands—and adopt spiritual excellence (Ihsan). Verily, God loves the spirituality excellent (Muhsinin). (2:195).

•        “On account of this, We prescribed (this commandment in the Torah sent down) to the children of Israel that whoever killed a person (unjustly), except as a punishment for murder or for (spreading) disorder in the land, it would be as if he killed all the people (of society); and whoever (saved him from unjust murder and) made him survive, it would be as if he saved the lives of all the people (of society, i.e., he rescued the collective system of human life). And indeed, our Messengers came to them with evident signs. Yet, even after that, the majority from amongst these people is certainly those who commit excesses on the land.” (5:32).

These three verses have greatly valued the protection of life for all mankind regardless of religion, culture, society, caste, and interfaith and intra-faith differences. The last verse also says that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has come up with evident signs and yet people are committing excesses on the land. These evident signs can be seen in the following Hadith:

•        Ibn Masud (ra) reported that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said, “The hell-fire is forbidden for every mild-mannered and even-tempered person who is close to people.” (Ahmad bin Hambal in al-Musnad, 1:415-3938).

•        Aisha (ra) reported that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said, “O’ Aisha, God is gentle and He loves gentleness. He bestows for the sake of gentleness what He does not bestow due to harshness.” (Muslim Shareef, ‘The Book of Piety, Filial Duty and Good Manners’, Chapter: The Virtue of Gentleness, 4:2003-2593).

•        Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated in his Musnad from Abd Allah bin Amr bin Al-As who reported that a man said, ‘O Messenger of God! What (person’s) Islam is best? The Prophet replied, The one from whose tongue and hand all people are safe”.  (Narrated by Imam bin Hanbal in al-Musnad, 2:187- 6753).

•        According to Abu Hurayra (ra), the Messenger of God (peace be upon him), “The most complete of the believers in faith is the finest of them in moral character, and best of you are those who are the kindest towards your womenfolk” (Tirmidhi in al-Sunan: Kitab al-Radaa, 3:466-1162).

•        Abdullah bin Masuud (ra) reported that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him), said, “The true believer is not a defamer or curser or one given to vulgarities and obscenities.” (Al-Adab al-Mufrad Al-Bukhari, ‘Cursing and Defamation’: 312).

•        Imam al-Nasai and Ahmad bin Hambal reported from Abu Hurayra (ra) that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said, “The true believer is he whom people trust with regard to their blood and their properties.” (al-Nasai in al-Sunan, Chapter: ‘The Quality of the True Believer’, 8:104-4995 and Ahmad bin Hambal in al-Musnad, 2:379-8918).

•        Jabir bin Abdullah said that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said, “Allah is not merciful to him who is not merciful to people.” (Bukhari, Muslim).

•        Abdullah bin Umar said that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said, “The Merciful One shows mercy to those who are themselves merciful (to others). So show mercy to whatever is on earth, then He who is in heaven will show mercy to you “(Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi).

•        Ibn ‘Umar (ra) said that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said, “Do not talk for long without remembering God Almighty, for talking much without remembering Allah Almighty is hardness of the heart. The most distant among man from Allah Almighty is one with a hardened heart.” (Tirmidhi).

•        From ‘Iyad bin Himar al-Mujashi’i (ra), the Messenger of God (peace be upon him): “Allah Almighty has revealed to me: You should be humble so that no one boasts over his neighbour nor anyone oppresses his neighbour.” (Muslim).

•        Abu Hurairah (ra) said that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said, “By Allah, he does not (truly) believe! By Allah, he does not (truly) believe! By Allah, he does not (truly) believe! Someone asked: “Who, O’ Messenger of God?” He, the Prophet (peace be upon him), said: “He whose neighbour is not safe from his mischief.” (Bukhari, Muslim).

•        Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr: “Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “The best companion in Allah’s estimation is the one who is best to his companion, and the best neighbour in Allah’s estimation is the one who is best to his neighbour.” Tirmidhi and Darimi transmitted it, Tirmidhi saying this is a ‘Hasan Gharib’ tradition. Al-Tirmidhi, Number 1287

The above mentioned Qur’anic verses and the Hadith root out every notion of injustice, intolerance, oppression and the killing of infidels, including non-Wahhabi Muslims that Abu Salamah al-Muhajir wants to provoke in the name of Islam, martyrdom, jihad, bravery and Sharia. Islam with these verses stands for peace, tranquility, harmony, security, safety, clemency, balance, tolerance, patience, forbearance, love, benevolence, human rights and moderation for all with no discrimination between Muslims and non-Muslims.

Well said! It is your freedom of choice, you are absolutely not compelled to follow someone against your will and wisdom. And this is a Qur’nic approach as well. And my stand in this matter is that, if you find such a contradiction between two religious ideologies, belonging to two different schools of thought, you must apply reason and find out their roots in Holy Scriptures, and try to understand them properly, with its true spirit, in the light of clear and unbiased interpretation.

For instance: it is well known to all that Deobandis and Salafis are hell bent on force conversion, while Sufies always avoid such a religious approach, and they follow these Qur’anic verses: “There is no compulsion in the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.”(2:256). “For you is your religion, and for me is my religion” (109:6). This way you can judge who is right and who is wrong in that particular religious approach.

  • @Misbahul Huda

"Islam is a perfect religion at any level, as god himself declares"

It's not a perfect at my level.

I consider it to be a vary good way of life but not perfect.

What god declared or not, I am not going to take that argument.

But I will argue with a different line.

You say, Deobandis and Salafis have hijacked Islam?

They (Deobandis and Salafis) say Barelvis and Sufis are indulged in Shirk and they are not following true Islam.

Why should I believe that Samiul Huda knows better than Ibn Abdul Wahab?

Do you understand my point, or you still going to stick to the argument that god declares...because what god declared to you, he also declared to Wahabis and Deobandis.

Use a little bit of Ijtehad, before replying.

  • Islam is a perfect religion at any level, as god himself declares:

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion”. (5:3)

But there are lots of misconceptions regarding Islam, and it seems to be irrelative, obsolete and outdated, in many spheres of life, in the context of contemporary world, because core peaceful Islamic teachings are being hijacked and misinterpreted by some internal extremist, Poisonous and Toxic elements i.e. Salafis / wahabis and Deobandis.

  • @Misbaul Huda

I am not blaming any religion to be bad. Read my comment again and understand please.

Contrarily, I think, if Islam if practiced in the right spirit, it provides a great path to god. And I am not even saying that this is difficult. Many people right on this site seem to be doing so. So out of a billion and half, I am sure only a few millions have taken the wrong path.

My point was about the claim of perfection.

    No religion is perfect.

At a personal level, of course, anything can be perfect for each of us.

But at a societal level, there is nothing perfect and any such claims will only lead to violence and pain.

  • @non muslim - 5/13/2014 12:58:43 AM

Dear brother! you can say that, it is too difficult to find a perfect and ideal Muslim on current scenario, but it is not just, fair and rational to blame any religion to be good or bad, perfect or imperfect, on the basis of malpractices of their adherents. The only measurement to judge any religion is, its scripture and code conduct.

    By Misbahul Huda - 5/14/2014 9:56:33 AM

  • Truly, perfection of Islam at individual level is, of course, the need of the time.

At the societal level, Islam gives freedom of choice for every one either to believe Islam a perfect religion or follow the religion that he feels right.

By Ghulam Ghaus غلام غوث - 5/13/2014 2:46:15 AM

  • That's the simple point, isn't it?

They don't agree with your perfect Islam. According to them, what they imposed was the perfect Islam.

You claim to know better about Islam? They claim to know better than you.

    Forget Taliban.

What is practiced in Pakistan, Pakistanis believe to be perfect Islam. Blasphemy laws, Hudood ordinance...etc

And some want to make it perfecter like in Saudi.

What is practiced in Saudi, Saudis believe to be perfect Islam. They think the rest of the world, including Barelvis of the subcontinent are involved in shirk.

That's why perfection remains only at a personal level.

At the level of society any claim of perfection/Utopian simply leads to violence. Perfection does not exist in society.

Perfection exists only at an individual level.

One can claim, my religion is perfect for me. To claim that my religion is perfect for the rest of the world is baseless and illogical.

A good deal of Ijtehad will defeat any such ideas.

    By non muslim - 5/13/2014 12:58:43 AM

  • Radical Talibanis did not impose the perfect Islam that is being followed by the mainstream Muslims and was brought by the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.

Had it imposed the perfect Islam, there would not have been wanton killings of innocent lives.

Radical Muslims/Talibanis themselves are not perfect because their interpretation of Islam does not allow them to respect other religions and have no peaceful coexistence, no harmony, no peace and no brotherhood.

The perfect Islam teaches love, peace, brotherhood, tolerance and mildness. It was empirical in the era of the prophet peace be upon him, hence the rationale behind its being perfect.

Some people think Islam of being imperfect is either because terrorists have misused and hijacked the words like Sharia, Jihad, Islam and Qur'an etc. to meet requirements of their political agenda or because some people have not got access to good resources of true teachings of Islam and thus unable to grasp the perfect Islam.

By Ghulam Ghaus غلام غوث - 5/13/2014 12:44:45 AM

  • Even before one can begin to understand what is a perfect religion, one should know two things...

    1) That there is no perfect definition for 'perfect'. Not in any dictionary, because there is no perfect definition for flaw for something to be flawless.

    2) There is not perfect definition for religion.

    On a more practical note...

But of course, anything can be perfect for an individual. There's nothing wrong in that.

In fact, it's good that something is perfect at an individual level and not at the level of a society, because that is harmless. That is good for the individual.

But when it is imposed at a social level, it becomes problematic. Because what is perfect to one is not so to the other. We have seen what happened when Taliban imposed the perfect Islam in Afghanistan.

    By non muslim - 5/12/2014 2:38:31 AM

  • For me, Islam is a perfect religion, most importantly, when I find there to be justice, tolerance, balance, mildness, justness, blissfulness, and easiness. In every walk of life it suits me.

It is a perfect religion because it teaches me to respect every religion of the world.

It is a perfect religion for me because it develops peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims, interfaith harmony, peace and tranquillity, for instance.

By Ghulam Ghaus غلام غوث - 5/12/2014 12:23:49 AM

  • The idea that Islam is a perfect religion belongs to the tribal belt of Pakistan.

On a more mature, thinking forum like this one, any claim that any religion is perfect doesn't suit.

    By non muslim - 5/10/2014 9:23:28 AM

  • "The United States is not, and never will be, at war with Islam".

    By Mehnoor - 5/10/2014 3:20:58 AM

  • They are forcefully penetrating the terror activities into the perfect religion, Islam. Islam never allows killing of any single human being from any country, let alone in the west or east or north or south.

    By Mehnoor - 5/10/2014 1:48:32 AM

  • “In order to be Islamic a doctrine has to be righteous, just, egalitarian, rational and compassionate”

Really true idea!  Such are the values that are of great importance in Islam.
By Ghulam Ghaus غلام غوث - 5/9/2014 9:02:55 AM

  • How can a doctrine be Islamic if it does not meet even the minimum standards of decency? These perverse ideologues need to be taught that in order to be Islamic a doctrine has to be righteous, just, egalitarian, rational and compassionate.
