Refuting the Claim of ISIS ‘Islam Was Never for A day the Religion of Peace’

By Ghulam Ghaus Siddiqi, New Age Islam

05 September 2019

“Islam was never for a day the religion of peace, Islam is the religion of war”, the self-proclaimed caliph of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi asserts in an audio address entitled “March Forth whether light or heavy”. (https://insidethejihad.com/2015/05/transcript-al-baghdadis-latest-message/). In its mouthpiece magazine ‘Dabiq’, ISIS publishes an article entitled “Islam is the Religion Of the Sword, not Pacifism”, without mentioning the author’s name. Before refuting this statement of ISIS, it is important to note at the following excerpt from the article;

“There is a slogan repeated continuously by apologetic “du’āt” when flirting with the West and that is their statement: “Islam is the religion of peace,” and they mean pacifism by the word peace. They have repeated this slogan so much to the extent that some of them alleged that Islam calls to permanent peace with Kufr and the kāfirīn. How far is their claim from the truth, for Allah has revealed Islam to be the religion of the sword, and the evidence for this is so profuse that only a zindīq (heretic) would argue otherwise.” (Dabiq, 7th issue, pg. 20-24)

The claim of ISIS “Islam was never for a day the religion of peace, Islam is the religion of war” is completely baseless. This claim denies the truth established in the Quran and Sunnah that Islam is intrinsically a religion of peace and that the preachers (du’at) of peace are neither apologetic nor heretic because they serve Islam by spreading its teachings of peace. There is no denying the fact that Islam grants permission for waging war but for the objectives of curbing religious persecutions, preventing terrorism, violence and restoring peace and tranquillity in its state.

The following are evidences taken from the Quran and Sunnah which refute the statement of ISIS.

Allah Almighty says, “But do not strive for Fasad (evil and terror) in the land. Surely, Allah does not like (Mufsidin) those who violate peace.”  (28:77)

The phrase “Allah does not like those who violate peace” implies that He Almighty likes those who establish peace. This Quranic verse categorically refutes the claim of ISIS that “Islam was never for a day the religion of peace”

The Arabic word ‘Fasad’ in the Quranic verses connotatively renders ‘anarchy’, ‘terror’, ‘violence’, ‘corruption’, ‘mischief’ etc and according to the Quran, the perpetrators of Fasad or terror will incur divine wrath (see these Quran verses, 2:204-205, 28:77) and will be barred from Paradise (13:25, 28:77 & 83).

Peace and safety is a great bounty of Allah for the entire humankind. Allah Almighty says in the Quran, “Let them worship the Lord of this House, Who has fed them, [saving them] from hunger and made them safe, [saving them] from fear.” (106:4-5)

But the ISIS claims “Islam was never for a day the religion of peace...”!!!

Opening the ways of peace for the entire humankind is the main objective of revealing the Quran and sending down the Prophet (peace be upon him). This is explicitly clear from the words of Allah Almighty,

“There has indeed come to you a light from Allah (i.e., Muhammad peace be upon him) and an Enlightening Book (i.e., the Holy Qur’an). By this Allah guides those who seek His pleasure to the paths to peace (and security) and takes them out of darkness by His command and leads them to the light (of faith and guidance) and directs them towards the straight path.” (5:15-16)

But the ISIS claims “Islam was never for a day the religion of peace..”!!!

There were certain occasions for which some verses of the Quran were revealed to permit war. But they were revealed for the Muslims so as to defend their religion and lives. The basis of war was not denial of the faith but the cause of religious persecutions. This can be understood from the following verse;

Allah Almighty says, “Allah does not forbid you to be good to them and treat them with equity and justice who did not fight against you on (the question of) Din (Religion), nor did they drive you out of your homes (i.e., homeland). Surely, Allah likes those who conduct themselves with equity and justice.” (60:8)

There is consensus of the majority of the scholars that this verse 60:8 is Muhkam and not abrogated (Mansukh). The apparent meaning of this verse is that the Muslims can be good to non-Muslims including Mushrikin and Kafirin who do not fight Muslims in matters of religion and live in peace and justice. Thus this implies that the nature of Islam is peace.

Allah Almighty says,

“But (do not fight) those who have allied with a people that between you and them there is a (peace) treaty, or who (losing heart) come to you in such a state that their breasts are afflicted (with this obsession) whether they should fight you or their own people. If Allah had so willed, He (strengthening their hearts) would have given them supremacy over you. Then they would certainly have fought you. So if they keep away from you and do not fight you and send you (a message) for peace, then (in the interest of peace) Allah has left no way open for you (to launch any aggression) against them.” (4:90)

ISIS must ponder over these Quranic messages. Allah Almighty Who chose Islam as His Religion (Din) (3:19) and filled it with the teachings of peace, prefers peace to war to such an extent that He orders the Muslim community through the prophet (peace be upon him) to accept the hands stretched out for peace even if the opponents have evil intentions.

From the first chapter of the Quran till the end, there are several verses which encourage establishment of peace but it is ISIS which says, “Islam was never for a day the religion of peace...”!!!

The following are some Ahadith which also encourage peace, safety, and refute the claim of ISIS.

It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever has three qualities together will have gathered the faith: equity with yourself, offering peace to the world, and spending from small amounts”. (Sahih Bukhari)

According to this hadith, offering peace to the world is a source of strengthening the faith. Then, how could Islam never be the religion of peace for a single day?!!

The Prophet also said, “Establish reconciliation between people. Verily, corrupted relations between people are the razor.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Worship the Most Merciful and spread peace.” (Ibn Majah). Then, how could Islam never the religion of peace for a day?!!

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “O Uqbah, reconcile whoever cuts you off, give to whoever deprives you, and turn away from whoever wrongs you.” Then, how could Islam never be for a day the religion of calling the believers to establish good relationship which comes through peace?!!

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm in Islam in Islam”. (Ibn Majah, Dar Qutni, Muwatta, Mustadrak, according to Imam Hakim and Imam Dhahbi, this hadith is Sahih on the conditions of Imam Muslim).

In his address the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to all the people including Muslims and non-Muslims,

“O sons of Adam and the men and women of the world all over! Your blood, your properties and your prestige are declared forbidden for ever –they are as sacred to your as are this day and this month in this Baitul Haram.”

In this address the Prophet (peace be upon him) declared the sacredness of human life. Stanley Lane Pole expresses forgiveness and magnanimity of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in these words, “Facts are harsh things and it is fact that the day of Muhammad’s greatest triumph over his enemies was also the day of his grandest victory over himself. He freely forgave the Quraish all the years of sorrow and cruel scorn they had inflicted on him: he gave amnesty to the whole population of Makka.” (The Prophet and Islam)

All the evidences mentioned above refute the claims of ISIS and rather establish that Islam is a religion of peace. Therefore the preachers (du’at) of peace are working for good cause of Islam and Muslims. And If Islam grants permission for waging war, it is only for the objectives of preventing religious persecutions, restraining terrorism, violence and restoring peace and security.

  • Hadith provides a proof that pagans, during the time when Prophet Mohammad was around, were violent and they were the first to battle against Muslims that caused Muslims to fight against them even though Muslims at that time desired to have peace with them.  The following is the extract:

    Narrated `Asim Al-Ahwal:

I asked Anas bin Malik regarding Al-Qunut during the prayer. Anas replied, "Yes (Al-Qunut was said by the Prophet (ﷺ) in the prayer)." I said, "Is it before Bowing or after Bowing?" Anas replied, "(It was said) before (Bowing)." I said, "So-and-so informed me that you told him that it was said after Bowing." Anas replied, "He was mistaken, for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said Al-Qunut after Bowing for one month. The Prophet (ﷺ) had sent some people called Al-Qurra who were seventy in number, to some pagan people who had concluded a peace treaty with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) . But those who had concluded the treaty with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) violated the treaty (and martyred all the seventy men). So Allah's Apostle said Al-Qunut after Bowing (in the prayer) for one month, invoking evil upon them.

The extract above is from Sahih al-Bukhari 4096, in-book reference: book 64, hadith 140; USC-MSA web (English) reference: vol 5. book 59, hadith 422.
The phrase, The prophet had sent some people..to some pagans who had concluded the treaty with Allah's Messenger, here implies Prophet Mohammad desired peace to be with pagans.  If he did not have the desire to have peace treaty with pagans, there was no reason why he should send seventy men to approach them with peace talk.
What happened when he had sent seventy men to pagans?  The phrase, those who..violated the treaty (and martyred all the seventy men), as mentioned subsequently implies these pagans were as barbarians, disliked peace but liked violence, killed all seventy Muslims.  In other words, they were the first to fight with Muslims even though Muslims wished to have peace talk with them.  As a result of their evil act in killing these Muslims, the phrase, Allah's Apostle said..invoking evil upon them, implies they fought against pagans after the martyrdom of all the seventy men.
Yet contemporary Muslim extremists act contrarily against the book of hadith that they fight against non-Muslims without offering peace talk with them.  They wish to establish Islamic state and yet their so-called Islamic state is full of violence and is so different from what existed during the time when Prophet Mohammad existed.  He desired peace since he eagerly sought peace with pagans.  The evil act of pagans during that time that had killed seventy Muslims that caused him to have no choice to have battle with him.
The hadith below supports the Prophet Mohammad at his time when never fought with those pagans who never fought with Muslims.  The following is the extract:

    Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

The pagans were of two kinds as regards their relationship to the Prophet and the Believers. Some of them were those with whom the Prophet was at war and used to fight against, and they used to fight him; the others were those with whom the Prophet (ﷺ) made a treaty, and neither did the Prophet (ﷺ) fight them, nor did they fight him. If a lady from the first group of pagans emigrated towards the Muslims, her hand would not be asked in marriage unless she got the menses and then became clean. When she became clean, it would be lawful for her to get married, and if her husband emigrated too before she got married, then she would be returned to him. If any slave or female slave emigrated from them to the Muslims, then they would be considered free persons (not slaves) and they would have the same rights as given to other emigrants. The narrator then mentioned about the pagans involved with the Muslims in a treaty, the same as occurs in Mujahid's narration. If a male slave or a female slave emigrated from such pagans as had made a treaty with the Muslims, they would not be returned, but their prices would be paid (to the pagans).

The extract above is from Sahih al-Bukhari 5286, in-book reference: book 68, hadith 35; USC-MSA web (English) reference: vol. 7, book 63, hadith 210.

The phrase, the others were those with whom the Prophet made a treaty..neither did the Prophet fight them..nor did they fight him, as mentioned here implies Prophet Mohammad never fight with some pagans.

If Islam were a religion of war, Prophet Mohammad should fight with those whom he had made treaty with them.  As he did not fight with them, it implies Islam is not a religion of war but of peace.  It is of peace, since the Prophet sought peace with them instead of violence.  Yet contemporary Muslim extremists act contrarily against the hadith since they seek violence with pagans instead of peace.  The so-called Islamic State that Muslim extremists desire for is so much different from historical Islamic State, a state that sought peace with pagans in the past.

  • Quran promotes peace between Muslims and non-Muslims: Al-Baqara (The Cow) - 2:224 [read in context] وَلاَ تَجْعَلُواْ اللّهَ عُرْضَةً لِّأَيْمَانِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّواْ وَتَتَّقُواْ وَتُصْلِحُواْ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ وَاللّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ (2:224) Basit - Hussari - Minshawi - f Wala tajAAaloo Allaha AAurdatan liaymanikum an tabarroo watattaqoo watuslihoo bayna alnnasi waAllahu sameeAAun AAaleemun Topics discussed in this Verse: [Allah's attributes:Hears all things] [Allah's attributes:Knows all things] [Noah:rules regarding] AND DO NOT allow your oaths in the name of God to become an obstacle to virtue and God-consciousness and the promotion of peace between men: [212] for God is all-hearing, all-knowing. - 2:224 (Asad) - The phrase, the promotion of peace between men, is mentioned here and yet the word, men, here does not restrict itself to only Muslims. As it does not restrict itself to only Muslims, it demands Muslims to promote peace with also non-Muslims. As it promotes peace with non-Muslims, how can Islam be the religion of war? An-Nisa (The Women) - 4:90 [read in context] إِلاَّ الَّذِينَ يَصِلُونَ إِلَىَ قَوْمٍ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُم مِّيثَاقٌ أَوْ جَآؤُوكُمْ حَصِرَتْ صُدُورُهُمْ أَن يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ أَوْ يُقَاتِلُواْ قَوْمَهُمْ وَلَوْ شَاء اللّهُ لَسَلَّطَهُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ فَلَقَاتَلُوكُمْ فَإِنِ اعْتَزَلُوكُمْ فَلَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ وَأَلْقَوْاْ إِلَيْكُمُ السَّلَمَ فَمَا جَعَلَ اللّهُ لَكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ سَبِيلاً (4:90) Basit - Hussari - Minshawi - f Illa allatheena yasiloona ila qawmin baynakum wabaynahum meethaqun aw jaookum hasirat sudooruhum an yuqatilookum aw yuqatiloo qawmahum walaw shaa Allahu lasallatahum AAalaykum falaqatalookum faini iAAtazalookum falam yuqatilookum waalqaw ilaykumu alssalama fama jaAAala Allahu lakum AAalayhim sabeelan Topics discussed in this Verse: [Desertion in fight] [Hypocrites] [Treaties] unless it be such [of them] as have ties with people to whom you yourselves are bound by a covenant, or such as come unto you because their hearts shrink from [the thought of] making war either on you or on their own folk - although, if God had willed to make them stronger than you, they would certainly have made war on you. [110] Thus, if they let you be, and do not make war on you, and offer you PEACE, God does not allow you to harm them. [111] - 4:90 (Asad) - The phrase, making war either on you or on their own folk, here implies the battle with Muslims. As it is a battle with Muslims, it can be non-Muslims. The phrase, if they let you be..and do not make war on you and offer you peace..God does not allow you to harm them, here implies Muslims need to have peace talk with them to cease battle.

  • Hadith provides a proof that Muslims in the past extended the peace even to non-Muslims:
There is none to show more patience at listening to the most irksome things than Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. 'Partnership is associated to Him (polytheism), and (fatherhood) of a child is attributed to Him, but in spite of this He protects them (people) and provides them sustenance.' This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Abu Musa with a slight variation of wording.
The extract above is from Sahih Muslim 2804 a, b; in-book reference: book 52, hadith 35, USC-MSA web (English) reference: book 39, hadith 6731.
The phrase, Partnership is associated to...(polytheism)..He protects them and provides them sustenance, as mentioned here implies Muslims, at the time when Prophet Mohammad was here, provided peace for polytheists.
Hadith provides a proof that Prophet Mohammad demanded peace treaty with pagans and it was these pagans to break the peace treaty to cause war between them.  The following is the extract:
    Narrated `Asim:
I asked Anas bin Malik about the Qunut. Anas replied, "Definitely it was (recited)". I asked, "Before bowing or after it?" Anas replied, "Before bowing." I added, "So and so has told me that you had informed him that it had been after bowing." Anas said, "He told an untruth (i.e. "was mistaken," according to the Hijazi dialect). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) recited Qunut after bowing for a period of one month." Anas added, "The Prophet (ﷺ) sent about seventy men (who knew the Qur'an by heart) towards the pagans (of Najd) who were less than they in number and there was a peace treaty between them and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (but the Pagans broke the treaty and killed the seventy men). So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) recited Qunut for a period of one month asking Allah to punish them."
The extract above is from Sahih-al-Bukhari 1002, in-book reference: book 14, hadith 13, USC-MSA web (English) reference: Vol. 2 book 16, hadith 116.
If Islam were not the religion of peace, why should the phrase, The Prophet sent about seventy men..towards the pagans..and there was a peace treaty between them, be mentioned above?  The Prophet should annihilate the pagans instead of seeking peace treaty with them if Islam were not a religion of peace.
The phrase, the Pagans broke the treaty and killed the seventy men, as mentioned subsequently implies it was the pagans who refused to accept peace talk with them and that caused the war between pagans and Muslims at the time when Prophet Mohammad was around.  Yet in this contemporary world, Muslim extremists never declare peace with non-Muslims.  They even fight with them when they do not even have battle with them.  Their act is certainly against what Hadith mentions in the past that Muslims had the desire to have peace with pagans or else there was no reason why the Prophet would send seventy men to them to have peace talk.
