Seminar On Iran Held At Raza Library: Should Such Things Happen At A National Institution In India?

By Prof. C. M. Naim for New Age Islam

In the June 20, 2012 issue of the Urdu newspaper, Sahafat (Delhi), the following news appeared under the heading, "Seminar on Iran Held at the Raza Library."

"Rampur, 19 June (Sahafat Bureau) A seminar on Iran was held today in the Meeting Hall of Asia's great Raza Library, presided over by the famous poet, Azhar Enati. The seminar began with a recitation from the Quran by Anwarul Hasan. Then the Director of the Raza Library, Dr. Syed Azizuddn Husain Hamadani, cast light on the aims of the seminar. He said that today the people of Iran were ready to do anything for the welfare and progress of their country. That there was no difference between the cultures and civilizations of India and Iran and that Iran had put an end to monarchism (shahanshahiyat) and secular government (la-mazhab hukumat) through the Islamic revolution brought about by the Ayatullah Khomeini.

Dr. Iqtidar Muhammad Khan said that among all Islamic countries only Iran had presented Islam's true picture. There was democracy there and also a two-party system. In Iran, women had more rights than men, and those rights were in accord with the Shariah. Women covered their bodies, but the faces were left exposed. They stood side-by side with men in the cause of their country's progress in all fields, including the army. He also said that when he went to the tomb of the eighth Imam, Imam Ali Raza (PBUH), at Mashhad he was amazed to see that nearly two hundred thousand people there recited the Quran mornings and evenings.

It was that Sharai passion due to which no European nation could cause any harm to Iran. He did not see any sectarian differences in Iran, and found that all lived happily together, and worried only about the defence of their country.

He said that the Imam Khomeini started his campaign against the power of the Shah because the Shah of Iran, at the urging of his European friends, was gradually destroying Islam. Now, however, much emphasis was placed on Islamic teachings, and with respect to Shariah Iran was far ahead of other Muslim countries. Other Muslim countries did not have anything that could be called democracy; they were only protecting monarchism disguised as Islam. He added that it would not be amiss to call the Iranian president, Ahmadinejad, a ‘Man of Iron’. The meeting was conducted by Dr. Shamim Sabir.”

The news raises several important questions.

1. Since the Raza Library is a national institution, supported entirely by every Indian citizen’s tax money, should its events begin with a recitation from the Quran?

2. What is the significance of a reading from the Quran in Arabic when it is not explained how the recited verses contribute to the particular event? Is it done only out of some misplaced sense of piety?

3. What is one to make of the learned Director’s claim that there were no differences between the civilizations of Iran and India? Does Iran also have Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain cultures alive and thriving like in India?

4. Why does the Director think that a secular or la-mazhab government in Iran was unacceptable, and had to be replaced by an Islamic government? Is a secular government not acceptable in every country where the majority population is Muslim? Is secularism good only for India and the West?

5. Finally, is the Raza Library a proper platform for projecting the political conflict going on between Iran and the Arab states of the Arabian Peninsula?

  • My Reply To Professor Naim:

In a write up about the 19th June seminar on Iran organized in Rampur Raza library Professor C. M Naim has criticized many points which were discussed in the seminar and the way it was started.  I would like to reply him point by point.

Answer 1. Professor Naim has written that in a secular country like India and institution like Rampur Raza Library the seminars should not start with the recitation of Quran. But, have Professor Naim gone through the emblems of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) where he can easily find the verses of the Holy Quran? Does Professor Naim not know that in these two central universities every event starts with the recitation of the Holy text and the founders of AMU and Jamia never criticized the presence of Holy text in the emblems of both the universities? Even at a time Mahatma Gandhi expressed his will to dissociate himself from Jamia when a few people opined about dropping the word Islamia from the name of the university. So the question is, why Mr Naim has singled out Raza library and its director Prof. S. M Azizuddin Hussain only? This question he must need to answer.

Answer 2.  Most of the times, the Quran is recited at public places in Arabic, though it’s totally a different debate whether Quran recitation in Arabic should have been done or not.

Answer 3. Indeed this is an issue of debate whether the Iranian culture is like the Indian one or not? But upon enquiring from the Raza Library Rampur I got to know that Professor Aziz didn’t say this rather it was wrongly reported by the newspaper, Sahafat. Professor Naim must have cross checked with the Rampur Raza Library before criticizing Professor Aziz on this issue.

Answer 4. In Iran it was not only secularism which was the main basis for Shah’s regime. Raza Shah Pahlavi was American stooge who in a bid to make Iran the Venice or Paris of the East did his best to make the culture of Iran vulgar and westernized which was totally different from the Iranian culture.

Answer 5 .Why not? A debate is a debate whether it is carried out anywhere. If Raza library cannot carry out such a debate then which place Mr Naim think is more suitable for a debate on Iran , West Asia and its relationship with India. Even Jamia Millia Islamia organizes many debates and seminars about Arab spring and the conflicts going around in Middle East. Most of the Western Universities too have been organizing such type of seminars, then what problem Mr Naim has when Raza library organizes such seminars. Being a foremost library and and an educational institution of India Raza library has every right to organize seminars about Arab and Middle East.

After replying to all the questions of Mr Naim I would like to ask a few questions to him?

    1.      I see that his entire question is coming out not as an academician but by a person having some ideological differences against Prof Azeezuddin. Professor Naim doesn’t seem to be dealing this issue honestly.

    2.      Why he is trying to defend the Saudi monarchy and other American stooges in the Middle East and their roles in the crisis of Bahrain in crushing a popular revolt against the oppressive regime of the Bahraini monarch?

    3.      No any country or system is perfect but why to single out Iran only to condemn. At least Iran has been taking the American hegemonic ambitions directly through their horns. It has not bowed before the American pressure ever like the way Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries do.

Mr Nain has every right to express his dissatisfaction but in a unbiased way rather than having any personal issue. Mr Naim should better care to figure out such practices like recitation of the Holy text in all institutions like AMU and Jamia along with Raza Library and Khuda Bakhsh Khan Library, Patna. The question also arises about what would have been the response of Mr Naim if the director that institute was someone other than Professor Azizuddin?

Last, but not the least I would like to say that, no doubt Professor Iqtedar Mohammad Khan seems to be having a soft corner for Iran which I think every Muslim needs to have, because in the present scenario its Iran only which is taking the bull of Western imperialism directly by its horn rather than acting like a lackey like most of the Gulf monarchies. But what about Mr Naim whose heart seems to be beating for the American supported monarchs of Saudi Arabia, who have been the biggest curse for the Middle East, the biggest traitors of the Palestinian cause?

  • Sultan  Shahin  saheb,  I  do  not  know  what  you  meant  when  you  said,  " I   find   that   your   comments  were   posted   twice   and   thrice."   I  did  not  see  any  such  repeat  postings.

  • Dear  Ghulam  Mohiyuddin  Saheb,Thanks  for  suggesting  a  new captcha.  Apparently  you  too  are  having  difficulties  with  this  one.  As  we  know we  have  been  having  other  difficulties  too  with  the  postings  of  comments.  Now our  engineer  says  he  has  sorted  out  all  problems.  But  I  find  that  your  comments
were  posted  twice  and  thrice.  It  would  help  if  you  shared  your  experience  as Manzoorul  Haque  Saheb  has  done.  What  happened?

I  have  tried  the  simple  maths  too,  as  you  suggest.  But  some people  had  difficulties  with  that  too.  This  captcha  I  found  really  easy.  I thought  while  our  readers  would  have  no  problem  posting  comments,  the  spam computers  also  would  be  able  to  manage  to  post  spam.  Anyway,  please  keep sharing  your  experience.  I  intend  to  work  it  out  as  well  as  possible.

I  am  sure  you understand  that  I  value  comments  and  debates  very  much.  In  fact,  to  me,  a vigorous  discussion  is  the  whole  point  of  the  site.  But  believe  me,  spamsters have  been  really  troubling  us  a  great  deal.  I  want  the  site  to  be  as user-friendly  as  possible.  I  am  just  trying  to  balance  between  being  very
user-friendly  and  being  very  spam-unfriendly.  I  will  study  the  captcha  you  have suggested,  as  used  by  Times  of  India,  and  see  if  it  works  better.

  • Dear  Manzoorul  Haque  Saheb,  We  are  seized  of  the  issue and  will  do  whatever  we  can  with  even  greater  urgency.  This  Captcha,  that  we  are  using  now,  I found  to  be  the  simplest  among  many  I  encounter  normally  in  dealing  with  my banks  or  gmail  and  other  websites.  I  have  forwarded  your  suggestions  to  the webmaster.  Any  suggestions  from  other  readers  will  be  most  welcome  and  useful.
    Regards
