Islam and Science

The Quran has its own distinct way of communicating the truth. Resorting to allegorical language is rare and only when communicating the mystical. The only other exception when it uses allegorical language is when relating the story of the people of the Cave (Surah 18) which is from Jewish tradition. It rarely uses allegorical language for communicating truths that can be established by science but avoids precise language if our knowledge of the world is likely to change with the progress in science. It thereby avoids unnecessary controversy during periods when imprecise knowledge of the World may contradict with the truth in the Quran…..

Naik has said that the theory of evolution is “only a hypothesis, and an unproven conjecture at best”. [22] According to Naik, most scientists “support the theory, because it went against the Bible – not because it was true....

Where Are the Muslim Scientists?
Muhammad Jameel Yushau

The Muslim world does not lack the people who will conduct research and regain the glory of the civilization that was once the leading light of the world. What the Muslim world lacks are the institutions that support the development of these scientists to produce the knowledge that our world will continue to desire. The Muslim scientists of the past were successful because of the support they receive from the State and through philanthropists who understand that for a civilization to stand on its feet, it has to be mounted on the pedestal of knowledge….

If the scientists make their observations and experiments keeping their religious postulates in view, they can never arrive at the right scientific facts and conclusions. For scientists, it is necessary to adopt scientific methods in their laboratories, something that requires from them that they get rid of their previous religious prejudices. But if any scientist wishes to carry out a research that can corroborate his religious dogmas and postulates and thus can help his religion gain worldwide reputation and attraction, such clinging to religion will ultimately result in the stagnation of his research work.......

When Evils Spread On Land...
Ahmad Wahaj Siddiqui

However, if we look into Qur’an, it gave the warning of ‘Earth is in danger’ in 7th century CE: “See they not that We gradually reduce the earth from its outlying borders. (Qur’an, 13:41) Another verse says: “See they not that We gradually reduce the earth from its outlying borders. Is it then they who will overcome?” (Qur’an, 21:44) The outlying borders of the earth are being narrowed by sea floor spreading. The theory of lithospheric evolution holds that the ocean floors are spreading outward from vast underwater ridges. .…..

Why God Matters As a Matter Of Fact
Inas Younis, New Age Islam

It’s not a coincidence that the world’s leading thinkers are also the world’s unbelievers.   For the man of intellect, only blind faith expressed in an act of humility devoid of any practical reward can lead to his divine intervention.   Only an   act of will against the will, which is his intellectual programming, will prove to him- that God matters as a matter of fact....

In Pakistan, the woman would have needed four eyewitnesses as a prerequisite, and if she couldn't find any, DNA evidence would not be admissible. That would allow the perpetrator to commit the crime over and over again with impunity, leaving no legal resource for the survivors. It is in such circumstances that circumstantial evidence has to play its role. Forensic experts must carry out the appreciation of evidence, the most reliable one of which is DNA evidence….

Science Is A By-Product Of Islam But … ?
Dr. Mohammad Ghitreef, New Age Islam

Islamic concept of Tauhid (oneness of God) hit a powerful blow to superstitions, which almost came to a dead end in the very lifetime of holy prophet and in the era of great Islamic conquest of Roman as well as Persian empires. In the beginning of Umayyad period, when political turmoil was over and life became peaceful, there started a new journey of augmenting knowledge and its propagation in terms of a major translation movement from old Greek, Persian and Indian texts into Arabic, which continued for centuries and bore tremendous cultural fruits....

Islam, Intellect and Olive
Nastik Durrani, New Age Islam

This is the dangerous ignorance that pervades in the Islamic world though they claim that the first thing God had created was intellect, the first verse of the Quran was ‘Read in the name of God who has created’ and the first tool that God had created was the pen with which God wrote the fate of the people. Despite all the claims, the majority of the Muslims is illiterate who cannot even hold a pen properly and who have a greater belief in the Karamat of the Sufis, in the water of Zamzam and in fig and olive than in science. It is due to their inferiority complex that compels them to look for something that can generate in them a sense of superiority over the developed nations of the west.....

“We start by observing reality… we try to select solid (unchanging) observations that are not affected by how we perceive (measure) them. We then proceed by increasing our research and measurement, subjecting premises to criticism, and being cautious in drawing conclusions… In all we do, our purpose should be balanced not arbitrary, the search for truth, not support of opinions.”...

Agnostic Einstein Closer To Quranic God
Dr Shabbir Ahmad, New Age Islam

Einstein said that he lost his faith in religion while he was 12 because of his scientific studies which developed a scientific temperament in him. He thought the stories in the Bible were mere legends and the belief in God of the Bible was childlike. However, as his reason and intellect developed and he came much closer to nature through his scientific explorations and discoveries, he became more and more astonished at the presence of the wonderful harmony, perfection and order in the universe or nature....

“If you ask anything in faith, believing,” they said.  “It will be done.” I knew they were quoting the Word of God. We prayed together, and I went home confident that God had heard my prayers.  But my horrible compulsions didn’t go away. By the fall of my sophomore year in college, I was desperate and depressed enough that I made a suicide attempt. The problem wasn’t just the bulimia.  I was convinced by then that I was a complete spiritual failure....

Next time we look up to the starry skies, let us think about those powerful forces that surround us. Forces that keep our very existence poised on a knife-edge, and let us thank Allah for His grace and mercy....

THE sleep has been long and deep. In 2005 Harvard University produced more scientific papers than 17 Arabic-speaking countries combined. The world’s 1.6 billion Muslims have produced only two Nobel laureates in chemistry and physics. The 57 countries in the Organisation of the Islamic Conference spend a puny 0.81% of GDP on research and development, about a third of the world average. America, which has the world’s biggest science budget, spends 2.9%; Israel lavishes 4.4%....

Have you ever seen or experienced medically documented miracles as a result of your prayers? Or maybe it was the result of someone else's prayers? I certainly have! And for many years, I was a Christian sceptic. As you may know, there is religious teaching in Christianity today that does not believe miracles can happen as result of prayer like they did in the first and second centuries. But, I believe that miracles can happen like they did back then; and me and others have a lifestyle that confirms it. Perhaps someday I will write an article about my Top 10 Prayer Miracles, during my 44 years as a Christian. In the mean time, here are some scientific studies providing evidence that prayer does make a difference......

There is ample proof that prayer works. Many scientific studies have been conducted that validate this observation. Many doctors believe that if they prayed with their patients before and after surgery or before administering a course of powerful drugs, this treatment might assist in the patient's recovery. Thirty medical schools in America are now offering courses in faith and medicine.

"Prayer works," says Dr. Matthews, associate professor of medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and senior research fellow at the National Institute for Healthcare Research in Rockville, Maryland. Dr. Matthews has reviewed more than 200 studies linking religious commitment and health, cited in his book, 'The Faith Factor'. Dr. Matthews cites studies suggesting that people who pray are less likely to get sick, are more likely to recover from surgery and illness and are better able to cope with their illnesses than people who don't pray. Some evidence indicates that sick people who are prayed for also fare significantly better than those who aren't. In fact, some physicians report that people who are prayed for often do better even if they don't know they're being prayed for.....

Is belief in the existence of God irrational? These days, many famous scientists are also strong proponents of atheism. However, in the past and even today, many scientists believe that God exists and is responsible for what we see in nature. This is a small sampling of scientists who contributed to the development of modern science while believing in God. Although many people believe in a "God of the gaps", these scientists, and still others alive today, believe because of the evidence….

A larger percentage of scientists in the United Stated are atheists compared to that in the general population. Do they disbelieve in the existence of God because of their intelligence, knowledge, and academic studies? A new study shows that disbelief is correlated with such mundane things as marital and family status and family of origin.

S Irfan Habib: Modern Science Can Be Pursued By Any Believer
Rakhi Chakrabarty

Those who talk about Islamic science believe modern science is actually western science inspired by Christian ethics. I find this problematic. Science is intrinsic in Islam. The 8th to 12th century was the golden age of science in Islam. The Abbasid Caliphate of Baghdad set up the Baitul Hikmah or the House of Wisdom, laying the foundations of rational and natural science....

"Strangely, Islam is rigid about science, but not in the area of technology. Islamists use technology, but they feel that science affects the mind. It brings democratisation of knowledge and they want to deny people access to knowledge," he said. Habib said that "anti-government propaganda, global politics, the general outlook and anything associated with the West is the enemy of Islam have led to the gradual slide of a pragmatic scientific mindset within Islam"....

In addition, because of the ever-changing nature of scientific concepts, sooner or later their argument is negated by the newer research. Even if the purpose of the new study was not to testify to or oppose the Quranic verse, it ends up doing just that. Consequently, scholars have to re-interpret the same verse in an entirely different manner to avoid redundancy and self-contradiction….

Science and Islam
Khwaja Mohammad Zubair

The basis of this philosophy is the negation of Allah as the source of all knowledge. On the contrary, a movement started by the Church stood for the negation of pragmatism and reasoning. The Biblical obscurantism had its own interpretation of the creation of the universe and all living objects. In this connection, Galileo’s undaunted stand that the sun is static and the earth revolves round it, even after the pressure exerted by the clergy by declaring him an apostate, is the part of history. He was made to take back his words.

Abdus Salam and the Higgs Boson Particle
By Jyoti Malhotra

The Indian scientific establishment has trumpeted Satyendra Nath Bose, the man who lends his name to the Higgs boson particle, which is a forerunner of the ‘God particle’ itself. There is also Jogesh Pati, a US scientist of Indian origin, who, along with Pakistani scientist Abdus Salam, worked on quarks and leptons....

To begin, let's look at the sort of quackery around us. Consumer stuff is relatively harmless. If a woman has fallen for some advertised facial "magic cream" that will change her complexion from 'sanwali' to 'gori', then that is her stupidity. And if someone actually tries out herbal recipes for baldness, there's no tragedy there. Ripping such people off is just a voluntary self-administered tax on ignorance….

Science is the study of nature and how it functions. The beauty of science is that when a theory is presented, scientists of that field do not immediately agree with the theoretical claims. Rather, they put the theory to intensive criticism and tests. In contrast, religion is entirely based on dogmas, which in most cases cannot be denied, questioned, critiqued or revoked. …
